OnePlus’s latest trademarks almost sound like the company is splitting into three

OnePlus has a lot going on for itself lately and while its new strategies have been questioned by its fanbase, they actually seem to be paying off. The Chinese company has recorded phenomenal growth in the US and its Nord series is selling better than ever globally. And as if the recent changes weren’t enough, new trademarks imply that there could be more on the way.

Tipster Mukul Sharma has shared some really cryptic trademark filings by OnePlus and they have got everyone scratching their heads. There’s “two plus” that almost sounds like a sequel to the legendary brand, but it’s also joined by trademarks for “six plus” and “eight plus” names.

Now, OnePlus does have some big plans for 2022 including more mid-range models and even an ‘ultra’ flagship for the first time. There are also talks of a unified OS called ‘H2OOS‘ that appears to be a replacement for ColorOS, OxygenOS, and the Chinese HydrogenOS. Could these changes and the trademark filings together be a part of some new master plan devised by Pete Lau himself? Hard to tell given the lack of official information, to be honest, so all we can do at this point is theorize.

Still, the main purpose of trademarks is to grant security to a company or product name by turning them into intellectual property. Registering one prevents rivals from copying or stealing a brand. Therefore, if not a part of some grand scheme, the new trademarks could simply be OnePlus setting names that sound too similar to itself out of bounds for others — like ‘TwoPlus.’
