Here are the details…

BYD Unveils Next-Gen Electric City Bus and Double-Decker Coach

BYD has unveiled two new electric bus innovations at the Busworld trade fair in Brussels, Belgium: an electric double-decker coach and a new generation of its 12-metre city bus. The new electric double-decker coach is approximately 14 meters long and has a maximum capacity of 80 passengers. It is powered by BYD’s Blade Battery, which is integrated into the chassis to save space. The coach has a range of up to 600 kilometers on a single charge.

The new generation of the eBus B12 is the first model under BYD’s own brand to feature the integrated Blade Battery chassis. The eBus B12 has a maximum battery capacity of 500 kWh and a range of up to 600 kilometers. Both of the new buses are equipped with BYD’s latest electric vehicle technology, including its intelligent driving assistance system and its vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication system.

The new electric double-decker coach is expected to be available in Europe in early 2024. The new generation of the eBus B12 is expected to be available in Europe in mid-2024. BYD’s new electric buses are expected to play a major role in the transition to a more sustainable transportation system.

According to a report by Pandaily, WeRide has officially begun operations of their unmanned Robobus service at Guangzhou International Bio Island. WeRide has introduced the new service after two years of successful operations of their Robotaxi commercial service (China’s first) in the region.

The Robobus is a pure electric vehicle and has a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour. It can achieve safe and stable unmanned driving services along urban roads, expressways, and tunnels in rush hours and under inclement weather conditions.

After thorough research and investigation of the daily traffic on Guangzhou International Bio Island, Robobus has opened two operating routes in its first phase and will further offer services throughout the entire island.

Robobus operates 7 days a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. On Saturday and Sunday however, the bus operates from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Additionally, Passengers can view real-time locations and the running status of the vehicles on their “WeRide Go” app.

Robobus vehicles will initially have volunteers who will help first-time passengers to understand and familiarize themselves with the autonomous vehicle’s workings. And WeRide support center will monitor the vehicles in real-time. The bus also has a brake button located inside for emergency situations.

The concept of the pure electric Robobus seems genuinely intriguing and is sure to be a better, eco-friendly alternative to fossil fule based public travel. However, the absence of manual controls is a bold step by the company and thus WeRide will have to uphold high safety standards to gain public trust.

The company is shipping the large number of electric buses to the region to fulfill an order from a local firm.

According to electrive, the buses are being sent to Egged, the largest bus company in Israel. The company has ordered 100 fully electric 12 meter long buses that are made by the known Chinese automobile maker. These buses are scheduled to ship by the end of 2022 and will be used in Haifa, which is the third largest city of the country. Notably, this order marks the largest ever electric bus shipment till date to Israel. Furthermore, the order is also a part of a larger Israeli tender that is for a total of 200 buses. The company had even previously received an order from Nobina in Finland.

This is even supported by the national transport authority of the nation. Egged, which operates in the public transport sector has chosen BYD as its supplier and has been the Chinese brands customer since 2017. In the past, Egged had even placed an order for 24 electric buses in its fleet, which are currently operating in Haifa and Jerusalem as well. This order will further strengthen the electric transport fleet in the city, with the upcoming buses featuring an iron phosphate batteries that can offer a longer service life and increased energy density for a longer range over the previous generation.

Its battery has a 422 kWh of energy content and is expected to offer a total range of up to 400 kilometers. Egged’s official stated that “This is an important moment for the people of Israel and public transportation in our country. It is a clear signal of our commitment to transitioning to zero emission transportation for a better environment for Israeli residents. We have great confidence in BYD’s pure electric eBuses for providing our passengers with reliable, safe and comfortable transportation.”

Nobina, the local transport operator of Finland has ordered 70 more e-buses.

Out of the 70 new electric buses, 42 of them are 13 meters long while 28 of them are 15 meters long. The company has said that these new buses are to be delivered in the summer of 2022 and will mainly operate on city routes in the greater Helsinki area.

The 13-meter models are relatively close to the 12-meter buses that are common in Europe. The 15-meter buses with double axles at the rear are mainly used in Scandinavia for intercity transport.

Both these variants ordered by Nobina are equipped with LFP batteries from BYD. In the 13-meter bus, one charge can cover a distance of around 400 kilometers while the 15-meter bus is rated to cover 450 kilometers on a single charge.

Commenting on this, Petri Auno, CEO of Nobina Finland, said: “We continue to select BYD eBuses based on their excellent track record for reliability, operational efficiency, performance, safety and of course, for the comfort they provide to our passengers. BYD eBuses now account for 25% of our Nobina Finland fleet and we look forward to enhancing this in the future.”

As noted, this is another order from Finland for BYD as the country had previously ordered 76 electric buses for use in Helsinki and Turku, which were delivered by the company earlier this year in August. With this new order, the total number of electric buses to be delivered by BYD in Finland stands at 119.
