While the design cues of the Gravity appear to mirror its sedan sibling, the Lucid Air, what really caught our eye was the timing of the Gravity’s production—late 2024. Here’s why it’s a big deal: Lucid has been churning out approximately 1,400-1,500 units of the Air per quarter this year, which isn’t exactly setting the sales charts on fire. The Gravity, being an SUV, is inherently more attractive to consumers, making it a possible savior for Lucid’s moderate sales performance.

Lucid is clearly feeling the heat, though, as evidenced by their special 18-month lease offers on certain trims of the Lucid Air. They’re looking to maintain sales momentum until the Gravity comes along to potentially steal the limelight.

In terms of competition, Lucid Gravity is locking horns with some big players like the Mercedes-Benz EQS, BMW iX, and Rivian R1S. But there’s a twist. BYD YangWang U8 SUVs Spotted in Transit

A video filmed in China revealed eight BYD YangWang U8 off-road SUVs. The U8 began pre-sales on April 18, and deliveries are scheduled to start in September. Given that there are still a few months until the release date, we can assume that these vehicles have not yet been dispatched for delivery. The company will likely use the U8 models in the video for various tests. These tests are crucial for both allowing the press to form preliminary opinions about the vehicle and identifying any potential issues beforehand. You can watch the video below.

The BYD YangWang U8 first garnered attention in January when BYD unveiled its unique features, including its ability to perform a 360° tank turn, float on water, and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.6 seconds. When presales launched in April, customers could choose between the Premium Edition and the Off-road Master Edition, which includes a large rooftop box. An all-electric model is expected to debut later, likely requiring a battery capacity between 200 and 250 kWh.

The Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) trim of the U8 comes with a 49.05 kWh LFP Blade battery, offering a 180 km CLTC range, and a 2L Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) that acts as a generator for the battery. With a full 75-liter tank and a charged battery, the SUV boasts a total range of 1,000 km. Charging the battery from 30% to 80% takes just 5 minutes.

The U8 is equipped with an impressive array of 38 sensors, including 3 lidars, 5 MW radars, 14 ultrasonic radars, and 16 cameras, prioritizing safety and control. Onboard satellite communication ensures connectivity even in remote areas without phone signals. An optional drone docking station is also available.

Both the Premium and Off-road trims share a 3050 mm wheelbase but differ slightly in dimensions. The U8 features electric motors at each wheel, generating 220 kW of power and a maximum output of 880 kW (1,180 HP) with a peak torque of 1280 Nm. Built on BYD’s E4 platform, the U8 is outfitted with a high-end DiSus-P suspension system and 22-inch forged wheels.

The cabin is designed for comfort, offering four large screens: a 12.8-inch instrument panel for the driver, a 23.6-inch infotainment screen, and two additional screens for rear passengers. The U8 is set to compete with the Mercedes EQG and Hummer EV in the Chinese market. However, BYD has not announced any plans for export at this time.

The Eletre is Lotus’s maiden electric SUV and is regarded as a vital product for its entry into the Chinese market. The vehicle is powered by a high-torque electric motor codenamed EDS2, capable of generating a maximum power of over 600 horsepower. The Eletre features a two-speed gearbox on the rear axle motor and adopts an electronically controlled four-wheel drive system. Lotus claims that the Eletre can go from 0 to 100km/h in just 2.95 seconds and cover a maximum cruising range of 600 kilometres (373 miles) on a single charge, as per the WLTP standard. The battery capacity of the vehicle exceeds 100kWh, and it takes just 20 minutes to recharge under the 350kW charging condition, allowing the car to drive for 400 kilometres (248 miles). Eletre is also compatible with 22kW AC charging. Lotus announced that it would launch the Eletre in China in 2023.

Lotus is reportedly planning to introduce 50 units of the flash-charging robot system in China, which will be compatible with all-electric vehicles. It remains to be seen whether this innovative charging system will be made available in other parts of the world.

Maruti Suzuki-Toyota plans to build a long range electric SUV for India

The electric vehicle market in India is going to have some new competition as Maruti Suzuki-Toyota is working on an electric SUV which is expected to offer a range of up to 500 km.

Both the companies are working together to bring out this electric vehicle for the International as well as the domestic market. While the automakers are working on this project together, their variants will have a distinct design and styling.

According to an AutoCar India report, the Maruti Suzuki variant is codenamed YY8 and is said to sport a futuristic design and might look totally different from the auto maker’s existing ICE-powered cars.

For those who are unaware, both Toyota and Suzuki had signed up an MoU (memorandum of understanding) in 2017 aimed at co-developing electric vehicles for the Indian market. The new vehicle will be designed from scratch unlike the previous tried and tested method of fitting the ICE vehicle with an electric powertrain. According to reports, YY8 will be a 4.2-meter-long vehicle. Reports also mention that the car might have a 2,700mm wheelbase. The benefit of such a long wheelbase is that the company will be able to fix a bigger battery which further translates into a higher range.

The SUV will feature both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants. The two-wheel-drive variant is expected to be equipped with a 138hp motor and a 48kWh battery offering up to a 400 km of range in ideal conditions and the variant with four-wheel drive might come equipped with two-electric motors providing 170hp, a bigger 58 kWh battery, and up to 500 km range.

It is expected that the key features of Toyota’s e-SUV will remain the same but there will be a difference when it comes to the design of the vehicle. Moreover, the battery of this car is expected to be procured locally. According to reports, TDSG, a joint venture between Maruti-Suzuki, Denso, and Toshiba, is expected to manufacture these batteries in its Gujarat-based facility.

At the moment, it is not clear if Maruti Suzuki will introduce both variants in India, however, it is being reported that Toyota might launch both the two-wheel drive and the four-wheel-drive variants in India.

As it’s going to be Maruti’s first electric car in the Indian market the pricing will play a major role and the company will want to price it aggressively considering the Indian market scenario. According to reports, Maruti is expected to price this car in the range of Rs. 13-14 lakhs taking on the most popular Indian EV Tata Nexon.
