The Chinese telecom giant launched HUAWEI Mate 8 as its flagship smartphone for the second half of 2015. It has been almost 5 years since the handset’s initial release. For context, it debuted around the time when iPhone 6s/6s Plus, Galaxy S6/S6 Edge, and Galaxy Note 5 were the talk of the town. But even after these many years, the phone is getting a new system update, which is unheard in the Android world.

Out of all the smartphones launched in 2015, the Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are the only devices to get regular software updates. These two are even eligible for iOS 14, which is set to release this fall.

Surprisingly, Huawei is rolling out a new system update to Mate 8 with build number 8.0.0.850 (C00) in China. It is probably the first time a five-year-old Android smartphone is getting an official software update from the company.

This handset currently runs EMUI 8.0 based on Android Oreo. For those unaware, it was the first Huawei device to launch with EMUI 4.0 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It got two major Android and EMUI updates as promised by the firm.

The new update for the HUAWEI Mate 8, which is being seeded out after the end of its software support bumps up the security patch level to July 2020. Most importantly, it adds the “Smart Charge” feature, which reduces battery ageing by adapting and preventing the battery from being continuously charged when full.

That said, the OTA update weighs 222MB in size and is currently limited to the Chinese variant of the phone with model number NXT-AL10. We expect the global variants to get it in the coming days.

It is worth noting that a similar update was also rolled out to HUAWEI Mate 9/Mate 9 Pro (2016), HUAWEI P9/P9 Plus (2016), and HUAWEI P10/P10 Plus (2017).

Ha Gang stated that the company carries out high R&D investment every year for technological innovation. At the same time, the company has continued to upgrade and provide the latest technology to the old users. This improves the customer experience as new technologies are brought to older devices.

In the last 8 months, Huawei has released EMUI 8.0 to 20 old models. And also, 7 devices that were up to 3 years old were provided with EMUI 8.0 in the last week.

Apart from rolling out EMUI 8.0 update, the company has been actively working on bringing its GPU Turbo technology to a number of devices. The new technology can improve the graphics performance by 60 percent and it can be made available through a software update. A recent report had revealed that around 100 million Huawei and Honor device owners will be able to take advantage of GPU Turbo technology with the next few months.

The Oreo update will first be available as a beta version for the device before a stable version is pushed out to users. If you want to try out the beta version, all you have to do is follow the following instructions:

• Open the app and select the services tab
• Select the “Upgrade application” option and tap “apply”
• Once your application has been accepted, you will receive a notification for the OTA update.

If you live in the US and own the Honor 7X, you may want to check for an update. The Huawei sub-brand has begun rolling out an EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo update to the dual-camera toting mid-ranger.

A few months ago, Huawei released a closed beta version of EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 for the Honor 7X and a couple of other Huawei phones. Now a stable version is rolling out. Below is the changelog for the update:

• New floating navigation dock: With the newly added home screen shortcut, the floating navigation dock lets users navigate and operate their device from anywhere on the screen.
• Updated setting menu and Phone Manager: The redesigned Settings menu is clearer and more intuitive. The updated Phone Manager automatically optimizes the system based on usage patterns, keeping the smartphone running at top performance all the time.
• Phone gallery recycle bin: Users can now restore photos and videos if they accidentally delete them. The Gallery in the new UI features a recycle bin which retains deleted photos and videos for 30 days.
• Seamless LinkedIn integration: Contacts and Email in EMUI 8.0 let users sync the career details of their LinkedIn contacts, making it faster and easier to manage contacts across platforms.
• Link up two Bluetooth devices: Smartphones are now able to connect to two Bluetooth devices at the same me, boosting mobile experience and fun.
• Face Unlock: Scans a recognized user’s face to unlock instantly. It also prevents unlocking with closed eyes and allows only device owners to see lock screen notification details, ensuring maximum security.

The update also brings Project Treble support.

At the begining of the year, Huawei released a list of devices that will get updated to EMUI 8.0. The Huawei P9 and P9 Plus flagships from 2016 were also included. Report has it that the update is on the way.

The info comes from Huawei’s product manager who confirmed the update on the official forum. The update will bring Android 8.0 Oreo to the device and may likely be the last major update it receives.

When the Huawei P9 and Huawei P9 Plus were released in April 2016, they ran Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. It later got an update to Nougat.

The Huawei P9 and P9 Plus are the first Huawei phones to come with optics co-developed with Leica. The phone may already be almost 2 years old but it should still hold its own against a lot of phones in the market today.

EMUI 8 will surely breath new life into the device with its AI engine for resource allocation, smart split screen, and navigation dock. Though some of the features found in the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro’s version of EMUI 8 will be missing.

The Huawei P9 has a 5.2” FHD IPS display while the P9 Plus has a 5.5” FHD Super AMOLED 3D touch display. Both are powered by the Kirin 955 with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. The P9 also comes in a 3GB RAM + 32G ROM variant.

While they both have the same dual 12MP f/2.2 rear sensors, their selfie cameras have different apertures. F/1.9 on the P9 Plus and F/2.4 on the P9. The P9 Plus also has stereo speakers and a 3400mAh battery while the P9 has a 3000mAh battery.

Huawei has officially confirmed today that it has officially released the EMUI 8.0 closed beta for Maimang, Nova Youth Version (Lite) and three variants of Honor 7X. The company has also confirmed the number of people that will be provided with closed beta.

Huawei’s Honor has begun rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo to two of its devices – the Honor 8 Pro (Honor V9) and the Honor 9. The update comes bundled with Huawei’s EMUI 8.0 update but there is a catch.

If you are not a resident of the UK, you likely won’t get the update. However, one user from India has reported updating his Honor 8 Pro. Honor has not revealed when other regions will get the update but they most definitely will receive it soon.

The update started rolling out to the Honor 8 Pro first while the Honor 9 is scheduled to get it later. It brings all the goodness of Android 8.0 such as picture-in-picture mode, auto-fill, notification dots, and new emojis.

You also get EMUI 8.0 features like AI Intelligent Engine which allocates resources to your most used apps and handles low memory management for a smooth experience; dynamic wallpaper; and LinkedIn built-in. The update is about 2.8GB in size.

In the previous month, Honor CEO George Zhao had confirmed that the company will be releasing Android 8.0 Oreo update for Honor 8 and Honor 8 Pro. However, when an Honor 8 user enquired about Android 8.0 Oreo’s arrival, she was told that the company won’t be releasing the Oreo update for it.

According to Honor India, the Honor 8 will not be receiving Android 8.0 Oreo update because of “hardware and software limitations.” However, Honor is yet to make an official announcement on it. It could be a statement from an ill-informed social media representative. Hence, our readers are advised to wait for an official from Honor.

Huawei’s 2017 P-series flagship is now set to join the Oreo train globally as the company has announced the Android Oreo beta testing program for the P10 and P10 Plus in Romania.

The tech giant had launched the Closed beta program for the P10 and P10 Plus for the Chinese market in the fourth quarter of last year. This latest announcement emanated from the company’s Facebook page for Romania and also on its official website, which is an indication that this program is for global users in Europe and elsewhere outside China. The announcement also specified that the P10 and P10 Plus models that would get the update include the following software versions; VTR-L09C432B180, VTR-L29C432B180, VKY-L09C432B181, and VKY-L29C432B181.

For those having the compatible models, the process for participating is basically same with the China Beta testing program. With this development, it won’t be long before Huawei start pushing updates to P10 and P10 Plus users globally.

After weeks in beta testing, Huawei has finally announced a stable EMUI 8.0 update for the Mate 9 series. The update also brings Android 8.0 Oreo to the 1-year old flagship.

The EMUI 8.0 update is currently not available as an OTA but can be manually downloaded to the phone. Supported Mate 9 versions are listed below:

Users who can’t wait for the OTA can request for the update by going into the Huawei Mobile Services app and selecting upgrade request as seen in the image below.

EMUI 8.0 brings a number of cool features to the Mate 9. Key feature is the AI-experience which works underground and allocates resources to frequently used apps and also on the surface for apps like the camera, which recognizes scenes and provides suggestions.

It also brings PC Mode for a full desktop experience when connected to an external display. This is similar to what Samsung’s Dex does but with the aid of only a cable. With support for dual Bluetooth, you can pair a wireless mouse and keyboard to your device.

EMUI 8.0 also brings a smart split screen feature. This comes in handy when you are watching a video and an incoming notification comes in. The notification pop-up also includes a split-screen icon which when selected allows you go into split-screen mode without interrupting your video.

Huawei announced its new EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo during the launch of the Mate 10 series last month. As a result of the new Custom ROM, Huawei is set to upgrade older models to the new version and one of the models to get the upgrade is the P10. The Huawei P10 was the first flagship model that was launched at MWC earlier this year, along with the P10 Plus.

Huawei has now launched the Android Oreo-based EMUI 8 Closed Beta upgrade for the Huawei P10 and its sibling, the P10 Plus. Registration for the Closed Beta program for the P10 and P10 Plus will run from November 14 – November 16 and applicants would need to sign up using an account number and the serial number of their mobile phone.

This isn’t the first Closed Beta that Huawei would be launching, though, as the Mate 9 series, as well as the Honor V9, had earlier seen recruitment for EMUI 8 closed beta. With this development, we believe more models would get upgrade programs soon. However, a full upgrade package for the Stable ROM may not be available until early next year.

It would be recalled that the Mate 10 series launched with a new Kirin 970 chipset which came with Artificial Intelligence features. The interface also offers artificial intelligence but due to hardware differences, some older models may not have this feature enabled on the new EMUI 8.0 ROM ut all other features of the new interface not dependent on specific hardware requirement would be available to users.

Currently, the latest version available of EMUI is 5.1. However, as per the reports, the new Mate 10 smartphone series will come with a new version of EMUI. Till now, it was believed to be EMUI 6.0, but, as per the latest leaks, the newer version is EMUI 8.0.

It seems that the company is skipping version 6.0 and 7.0 and is directly rolling out EMUI 8.0 to match Android’s version numbers. There were rumours suggesting this changes, but there was no evidence, until now.

Recently, real photos of the Huawei Mate 10 smartphone were leaked. One of the image shows the “About Phone” section of the settings menu, which clearly mentions that the EMUI version is 8.0.

The Huawei Mate 10 will be powered by the Kirin 970 64-bit octa-core SoC. It is the same processor will also power the Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 Porsche Edition.

It appears that all the models in this series will be made out of metal, and will also sport a dual camera setup on the back, and a rear-facing fingerprint scanner.

We’ll know for sure what version of EMUI is pre-installed on the devices later today as the company is all set to announce Mate 10 series today in Berlin, Germany.
