<p>For those unaware, the global smartphone market dropped by around 3 percent. However, according to a <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/europe-smartphone-shipments-decline-11-yoy-q2-2022-macro-climate-continues-deteriorate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Counterpoint Research</em></a> report, the European smartphone market saw a substantial 11 percent decline in the second quarter and 13 percent fall in the first quarter of this year. During the months between April and June, the region only saw 40 million smartphone shipments.</p>
<p>While the Coronavirus pandemic is still a factor that affected the declining smartphone market, but another major influence was undoubtedly the Russian invasion to the Ukraine. At the same time, a fear of recession also grips the market, with many countries contributing to the falling demand as mobile devices are launching for higher prices. But despite all of this, the South Korean and Cupertino based giant still managed to see a positive trend in the second quarter of 2022.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-473645 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Q2-2022-European-smartphone-shipments.webp?x44794" alt="Apple" width="1200" height="800" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Q2-2022-European-smartphone-shipments.webp 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Q2-2022-European-smartphone-shipments-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Q2-2022-European-smartphone-shipments-1024x683.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Q2-2022-European-smartphone-shipments-768x512.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Q2-2022-European-smartphone-shipments-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Q2-2022-European-smartphone-shipments-1068x712.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Q2-2022-European-smartphone-shipments-630x420.webp 630w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>However, its not all good news for both brands as Samsung and Apple sold fewer smartphones in Europe in Q2 2022 compared to the Q1 2022. Following these two tech giants is the Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi. The company did manage to see growth as well during this period. Although, the same was not reflected on Oppo and Realme, which took the fourth and fifth place respectively. Both of these Chinese companies also saw a decline similar to the overall European region.</p>

This is said to be the the lowest first quarter shipments for nearly a decade. Ongoing component shortages and COVID-19 related lockdowns in China are the main culprits here. Samsung remained as the region’s top OEM, with its highest market share since Q3 2020.</p>
<p>A <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/europe-smartphone-market-q1-2022/">report</a> by Counterpoint research says that European smartphone shipments reached 49 million units in the first quarter of 2022, marking a 12% percent year-on-year (YoY) decline. This is the lowest first quarter total since Q1 2013.</p>
<p>Several factors such as component shortages, COVID-19 related lockdowns in China, deteriorating economic conditions and the ongoing of the Russo-Ukraine war are responsible for the decline. The report says Europe will witness more such drops in future due to the “Deteriorating macro and geopolitical environment”.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/">Samsung</a> remained the largest contributor to smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2022 with shipment share of 35 percent, the report states.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple"> Apple</a> took the second spot with a shipment share of 25 percent. The Cupertino company saw a year-on-year decline of 6 percent.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-465713" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/European-smartphone-market.jpg?x44794" alt="European smartphone market" width="1057" height="501" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/European-smartphone-market.jpg 1057w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/European-smartphone-market-300x142.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/European-smartphone-market-1024x485.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/European-smartphone-market-768x364.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/European-smartphone-market-696x330.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/European-smartphone-market-886x420.jpg 886w" sizes="(max-width: 1057px) 100vw, 1057px" /></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> ended up in the third spot in terms of smartphone shipments in Europe. The company recorded a 36 percent annual decline with a 19 percent market share.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo">Oppo</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/realme">Realme</a> captured the fourth and fifth spots in the European smartphone shipments market with 6 percent and 4 percent shipment share, respectively. Realme became the only OEM to register annual shipment growth in Q1 2022.</p>
<p>“Existing issues such as COVID-19 and component shortages have been exacerbated by new economic and geopolitical challenges,” said Counterpoint Research’s Associate Director, Jan Stryjak. “Rising inflation levels across the region are impacting consumer spending, while Samsung and Apple, Russia’s first and third ranked smartphone vendors, halted all shipments into Europe’s largest market in early March 2022,” Stryjak added.</p>
