As the curtains closed in 2023, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market witnessed a flurry of activity, with key players showcasing remarkable performances and market dynamics reflecting the industry’s evolution.

Li Auto Sets Records:

Li Auto led the pack, reporting robust figures for the week ending December 31. The company achieved a milestone with 14,100 units sold, a testament to the growing demand for their vehicles. The Li L7, L8, and L9 models secured a combined 14,100 insurance registrations, indicating a strong consumer base.

Nio and Xpeng Maintain Momentum:

Nio and Xpeng continued their competitive streak, reporting impressive numbers. Nio saw 5,700 insured registrations for the week ending December 31, contributing to a total of 17,700 units for December. Xpeng, on the other hand, hit a record-breaking 20,115 vehicles in December deliveries, marking the third consecutive month above the 20,000-unit mark.

Tesla Faces BYD Challenge:

Tesla, although reporting a robust 94,139 China-made EV sales for December, faced a formidable challenge from BYD. BYD emerged as the top global EV maker in Q4, surpassing Tesla, with a record-breaking 944,779 new energy vehicles delivered. The BYD Dynasty and Ocean lineup, featuring EVs and petrol-electric hybrid models, propelled the company to new heights.

Market Dynamics and Competitions:

China’s auto market, the world’s largest, remained dynamic. Tesla’s initiation of a price war influenced over 40 brands, yet it faced stiff competition from Chinese latecomers, indicating a shifting landscape. Notably, Xiaomi entered the EV market with ambitions to be a top-five automaker in the next 15 to 20 years, adding another layer of competition.

Tesla’s Future Plans and Challenges:

Despite facing challenges, Tesla remains a key player with ambitious plans. The acquisition of land in Shanghai for a megapack battery manufacturing plant reflects Tesla’s commitment to expanding its EV capacity. However, progress on the megapack battery manufacturing plant appears slower than initially planned, awaiting regulatory approval.

Tesla has apparently dominated the electric vehicle market in the US. The company has captured over two-thirds of the region’s market share in the first half of this year. So here are all the details.

Tesla leads the EV market in the US

The data is from the Kelley Blue Book (Via @TheEVuniverse) and revealed that the American EV giant sold 175,262 vehicles in the second quarter of this year. In other words, it had a 59.3 percent in Q2 2023. Meanwhile, its sales so far have hit 336,892 units, which basically accounts for 68.8 percent of the US EV market. Elon Musk even replied to this tweet, saying that the market share is 69 percent.

Notably, this marks a sizeable 34.8 percent growth year-on-year in the second quarter and 29.7 percent year-on-year growth in H1 2023. Looking at the figures, the closest automobile maker after Tesla is GM, which only had a 6.5 percent market share. So it is clear that Tesla is still leading the market in the US with a massive gap between its closest rival.

The company is also a major player in the global scale and has plans to expand even further. In India, it is looking to set up a factory to sell its electric cars. However, its presence isn’t completely unchallenged. BYD has been eroding its market lead and beating Tesla in the Indonesian market, earlier this year.

The market share of electric vehicles continues to increase, according to the latest research, Global passenger EV sales grew 71% year over year in Q3 2022. This being the case, the competition is getting fiercer every day. In fact, the competition is so intense that even Elon Musk, the inventor of modern electric vehicles, is only in second place with Tesla.

BYD widens gap with Tesla in Q3 2022, leads global EV market

Global electric vehicle (EV) sales grew 71% year over year in Q3 2022, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Global Passenger Electric Vehicle Model Sales Tracker. China remained the market leader in EV sales, followed by Europe and the US. The country’s EV sales increased by over 100% to exceed 1.7 million units from just 0.88 million units in Q3 2021.

BYD Auto continued to lead the global EV market during the quarter. The Chinese automaker also managed to widen its gap with the second-placed Tesla. When we look at the numbers, we see that BYD Auto remained the global market leader, shipping more than 537,000 EV units, an increase of 197% YoY. Its top three models “BYD Song, BYD Qin and BYD Han” contributed to over 56% of the company’s sales during the quarter.

Tesla’s global sales grew 43% YoY in Q3 2022 to over 343,000 units. The company saw increased demand for its vehicles in Europe this quarter. The smoothing production ramp in its Berlin factory helped deliver a record number of Model Ys in Germany this quarter. However, deliveries fell short of expectations due to logistics bottlenecks.

Followed by another Chinese brand, Wuling, grew by 31% YoY to hold the third rank in the global EV market. German auto giant Volkswagen’s  EV sales increased by 28% YoY to recover from their Q2 dip. The ID.4, ID.3 and ID.6 series had the top-selling Volkswagen models during the quarter. The company showed impressive results in China with its EV sales growing 79% YoY and 35% QoQ. Although the brand’s sales in Europe and the US recovered sequentially, neither region registered YoY growth.

Global top 10 EV models 

The top 10 EV models accounted for more than 35% of global EV sales in Q3 2022. Tesla’s Model Y remained the best-selling EV model. Six out of the top 10 best-selling EV models were from BYD Auto. The rest of the list is as follows:
