However, that could change now as an alleged report on the Korean forum says the Exynos 1000(Tentative) SoC on the next flagship could perform better than the upcoming Snapdragon 875.

Exynos 1000 vs Snapdragon 875 Leaked Geekbench Scores

The report leads us to two sets of Geekbench scores on the Korean forum. One with Snapdragon 875 and the other with the Exynos SoC. The devices used are Xiaomi Mi 11, and Samsung Galaxy S21. Of course, both the SoCs are unannounced and hence, these are tentative namings without confirmation on their existence.

Moving on, the Galaxy S21 seems to be tested with Exynos 1000 and Snapdragon 875. Both the single and multi-core scores of the Exynos are 1302 and 4250 points. This is significantly higher than Snapdragon’s 1159 and 4090 points. Also, Xiaomi’s Mi 11 allegedly recorded 1102 and 4113 points.

That said, the post doesn’t present any visual evidence like a screenshot to us. This poses a great doubt on its legitimacy and hence, we will have to wait for more info. Further, one of the posts also says that Samsung had to overclock the ARM’s top-performing core which is the recently launched ARM Cortex-X1.

Editor’s Pick: Samsung Wireless Charging Trio listing reveals more details

Overclocking ARM’s Cortex-X1 core

The report adds that there is an issue on the ARM’s side and to get the desired performance, Samsung has overclocked the SoC to land scores higher than the Snapdragon 875. While we need more information on this, it also suggests that the newer Core-X1 might be present on both the upcoming flagship SoCs as expected before.

Anyway, this is a significant bump up for both Snapdragon and Exynos SoCs. This is because the older ones had single and multi-core scores below 1000 and 4000 points. If we recall, Samsung is manufacturing Snapdragon 875 SoC for Qualcomm using the 5nm EUV process. Also, with reports saying Samsung could share cluster design from Snapdragon 875 on its Exynos, the above scores could be true as well.

This is rather exciting news and Samsung could finally match Qualcomm after years of struggle. However, since both the SoCs won’t be out for at least the next couple of months, so let’s play the waiting game.

The known leakster Ice Universe recently shared a tweet on Twitter that detailed the cluster design of both the upcoming Samsung and Exynos chips. In the post, he wrote “E 1+3+4” and “S 1+3+4,” with the ‘E’ clearly standing for the Samsung Exynos chip while the ‘S’ stands for the Snapdragon processor. For those unaware, chip designs in smartphones follow a configuration where there are multiple cores of different sizes and power.

E 1+3+4
S 1+3+4

The ‘1’ represents the super large core that boosts the highest clock frequencies and is the most powerful in the chip. Similarly, the ‘3’ cores are also high performance large cores, although, they aren’t as fast as the super large core. The final ‘4’ represents the energy efficient cores that are low powered and help perform less intensive tasks for the smartphone. To elaborate, chipmakers have adopted this design so that smartphones are more energy efficient when they are relatively inactive, but still offer great boosts in performance when undergoing intensive tasks.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei may have some hope as AMD gets license to sell products to companies in the Entity List

From what we know so far, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 is built on Samsung’s 5nm process and is said to use ARM’s latest Cortex X1 architecture, which is more powerful than the Cortex A78. According to ARM, the Cortex X1 is up to 30 percent faster than the Cortex A77 in peak performance and up to 20 percent faster than the Cortex A78. So, if Qualcomm does adopt the new technology, we can soon expect, launches from various companies to feature this chip.

Interestingly, since Samsung is the one manufacturing Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 chips on its 5nm process, we can also expect great improvements to the Exynos platform as well. The Exynos series processors have lagged behind Snapdragon, with the difference being noticeably in the current gen lineup of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S20 series. So, we can expect the South Korean OEM to focus on its proprietary chip design and bring forth improvements for the next gen smartphones in 2021.

He likewise expresses that the Exynos 990 was thought of, however taking a gander at how the processor failed to major up with the Snapdragon 865, it’s to some degree evident that Samsung will forgo utilizing this in its next lead run for 2021. Prior, it was rumoured that the Snapdragon 875 was excessively costly, driving Samsung to look for another option. Normally, the Galaxy S21 isn’t expected until 2021, so Samsung has a few to months to choose what kind of processor will be available in each model.

The Exynos 991, or Exynos 992 could be utilized to bring down the retail cost of the Galaxy S21, as Samsung will allegedly stay with a 60Hz refresh rate alternative with the base model to cut down the expense. While this may incense a lot of clients, Samsung needs to utilize such measures and forestall its flagship mobile phone prices from arriving at another ‘high’. Fortunately, since Samsung hasn’t formally affirmed this data, it’s ideal to consume it with a pinch of salt until it is official.

ITHome reports that they have been informed that the new GPU will appear in the Exynos 1000 which is expected to be the name of Samsung’s next flagship chipset that should power the successor to the Galaxy S20.

The GPU is currently referred to as RDNA-Exynos and has reportedly surfaced on Geekbench. A comparison of its scores shows it surpassing the Adreno 650 GPU of the Snapdragon 865. Below is a table showing the performance of the two GPUs:

RDNA-Exynos

Adreno 650

Manhattan 3.1

181.8 fps

123 fps

Aztec Normal

138.25 fps

53.5 fps

Aztec High

58 fps

20 fps

The Exynos 1000 should be announced by the fourth quarter of the year. However, before that, another flagship chipset called the Exynos 992 is expected to launch. This processor will power the upcoming Galaxy Note20 series.
