<p>Smartphones have become an essential part of our lives, but they are also constantly evolving. In the next five years, we can expect some major breakthroughs that will change how we use and interact with our devices. Here are the top three technologies that will revolutionize smartphones in the near future:</p>

<p>1. <strong>Satellite Connectivity</strong>: Imagine being able to send and receive messages anywhere on Earth, even without a cellular network. That&#8217;s what satellite connectivity promises to deliver. Several smartphone makers, such as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/">Samsung</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/">Apple</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/">Huawei</a> have already introduced devices that can <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/01/06/qualcomm-snapdragon-satellite-announced/">connect to satellites for emergency purposes</a>, but some are going a step further and enabling two-way SMS messages. This means you can stay in touch with your loved ones, access vital information, and get help when you need it most, no matter where you are.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="940" height="528" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Qualcomm_Satellite_Connectivity.png?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-518273" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Qualcomm_Satellite_Connectivity.png 940w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Qualcomm_Satellite_Connectivity-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Qualcomm_Satellite_Connectivity-768x431.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Qualcomm_Satellite_Connectivity-696x391.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Qualcomm_Satellite_Connectivity-748x420.png 748w" sizes="(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px" /><figcaption>Qualcomm&#8217;s Snapdragon Satellite Connectivity</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>2. <strong>Solid State Batteries</strong>: One of the biggest challenges of smartphone users is battery life. No one likes running out of juice or having to charge their phone frequently. That&#8217;s why <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/12/23/oppo-find-n2-sale-china/">solid state batteries</a> are so exciting. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries that use liquid electrolyte solution, solid state batteries use solid electrolyte. This means they can pack more energy in less space, resulting in longer battery life and faster charging times. Solid state batteries are also safer and more stable than lithium-ion batteries, reducing the risk of overheating or exploding.</p>

<p>3. <strong>Flexible Displays</strong>: What if you could fold, bend, or twist your smartphone screen without breaking it? That&#8217;s what flexible displays offer. OLED displays are used for creating flexible screens that can adapt to different shapes and sizes. Smartphones with flexible displays can transform <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/12/23/oppo-find-n2-sale-china/">from a compact smartphone to a larger tablet</a>, giving you more versatility and functionality. You can also enjoy better durability, lighter weight, and more multitasking options with flexible phones.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="875" height="623" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/OPPO-Find-N2-1.webp?x44794" alt="OPPO Find N2 Foldable Smartphone" class="wp-image-504709" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/OPPO-Find-N2-1.webp 875w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/OPPO-Find-N2-1-300x214.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/OPPO-Find-N2-1-768x547.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/OPPO-Find-N2-1-696x496.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/OPPO-Find-N2-1-590x420.webp 590w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/OPPO-Find-N2-1-100x70.webp 100w" sizes="(max-width: 875px) 100vw, 875px" /><figcaption>Oppo Find N2</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Speaking of flexible displays, our team here at Gizmochina got the chance to review Oppo’s 2023 flagship foldable, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-n2/">Oppo Find N2</a>. The Oppo Find N2 features Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC with up to 16GB RAM and 512GB of internal storage, alongside its large 7.1-inch 120Hz LTPO AMOLED inner display.</p>

It&#8217;s basically a permanently folded curved screen device. Looking at its beautiful curved display, we may assume that it&#8217;s from big-league OLED makers like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>, LG, or even <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/BOE">BOE</a>. But turns out, Xiaomi worked very closely with China&#8217;s Visionox to bring this curved screen design to reality.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-278356" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6.png?x44794" alt="" width="499" height="519" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6.png 499w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6-288x300.png 288w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/xiaomi-mix-alpha-pic-6-404x420.png 404w" sizes="(max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px" /></a></p>
<p>A top-rated digital blogger and supply chain source, Mocha revealed on Weibo earlier today that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/visionox">Visionox</a> and Xiaomi developed the Mi Mix Alpha concept together. So it was none of the big names like Samsung or BOE (Mate X <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/05/24/huawei-boe-partnering-8-inch-foldable-display-smartphone/">display supplier</a>) that brought such an experimental design close to a commercial release. Xiaomi&#8217;s product director Wang Teng Thomas didn&#8217;t deny this claim. He replied to the post saying that Xiaomi works with multiple OLED panel makers including Visionox.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-278691" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM.png?x44794" alt="visionox mi mix alpha supplier comment" width="449" height="264" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Screenshot-2019-09-25-at-9.02.53-PM-300x177.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px" /></a></p>
<p>Visionox may not be a household name when it comes to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/OLED">OLEDs</a>, but the company&#8217;s roots go back to the strong OLED project team of Tsinghua University, one of the most prestigious universities for science and technology in the world. What&#8217;s even more interesting is that he revealed Visionox is also going to supply OLEDs to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> very soon.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/27/huami-unveils-the-amazfit-x-concept-watch-with-a-flexible-curved-display/">Huami unveils the Amazfit X Concept Watch with a flexible curved display</a></strong></h6>
<p>It looks like Visionox has become China&#8217;s new favorite for developing experimental displays. Apart from the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-mi-mix-alpha/">Mi Mix Alpha</a> concept, Visionox is also supplying flexible OLEDs for Xiaomi&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/03/27/xiaomis-foldable-smartphone-features-in-official-video-teaser/">dual folding smartphone</a>. Further, the flexible AMOLED display for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/zte-axon-10-pro/">ZTE&#8217;s Axon 10 Pro</a> is also supplied by the same company.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_245250" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-245250" style="width: 630px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-245250 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2.png?x44794" alt="nubia-alpha-2" width="630" height="480" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2.png 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2-300x229.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2-80x60.png 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nubia-alpha-2-551x420.png 551w" sizes="(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-245250" class="wp-caption-text">Nubia Alpha also comes with Visionox&#8217;s flexible display</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>But Visionox is also part of another experimental product, coincidentally, also called as the Alpha. In case you still haven&#8217;t figured it out, I&#8217;m talking about the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/zte-nubia-alpha/">Nubia Alpha</a>, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/26/nubia-alpha-foldable-watch-phone-announced/">foldable watch shaped smartphone</a>, that features a four-inch flexible display from Visionox. The Chinese OLED maker currently has around 6,000 OLED patents to its name and has two plants, one in Gu&#8217;an, Hebei province, and another one in Hefei, Anhui province for manufacturing flexible OLED panels.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>UP NEXT: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/25/huawei-mate-x-will-launch-in-october-confirms-official-huawei-support/">Huawei Mate X will release in October, confirms official Huawei support</a></strong></h6>

LG says it is sitting it out for now and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> has shown off a prototype. A report says China&#8217;s <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/TCL">TCL</a> is also joining the party with not one but five foldable devices.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-237045" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/TCL-foldable-devices.png?x44794" alt="TCL foldable devices" width="560" height="281" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/TCL-foldable-devices.png 560w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/TCL-foldable-devices-300x151.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px" /></p>
<p>TCL is known as the licensee for <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/blackberry">BlackBerry</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/alcatel">Alcatel</a> brands. It owns the Palm brand too but has licensed it to another company which made the Palm phone released back in November. A report by <em>CNET</em> says the company has joined the foldable train and is developing two foldable smartphones, two foldable tablets, and a fifth foldable device that wraps around your wrist like a large bracelet.</p>
<p>According to patents and renderings, one of the tablets folds inwards while another folds outwards. The same applies to the phones too but are said to bend on the horizontal line like a flip phone. The fifth device, which sounds more exciting, can wrap around the wrist. <em>CNET </em>says a TCL executive told them back at CES 2019 that their first foldable phone will launch in 2020.</p>

<p>Don&#8217;t get too excited. There is a possibility that the design of these devices might change or any one of them might be scrapped and not see the light of day. Nevertheless, it is nice to see more players are interested in making foldable devices even though they might not become mainstream for a few more years.</p>
