Color filters are apparently replacing polarizers in foldable variants of OLED panels (organic light emitting diode) in the near future. This change would bring various improvements for the display technology along with multiple benefits.

According to a new report from UBI Research, known firms that manufacture such foldable OLED displays are working on bringing color filters that will allow panels to become thinner and brighter. For those unaware, Polarizers can be found in OLED panels and are used to deflect reflections from external lights.

The versions of OLED that is currently available in the market generally stack and encapsulation layer, polarizer, optically clear adhesive, a cover window on top of the light emitting layer. Furthermore, the cover window is made from a polyimide film or ultra thin glass (depending on the manufacturer).

While vendors were already using polarizers with a thickness within the 10 micrometer range over the 100 micrometer ones used in previous generations, this is still considered thick and lowers the overall brightness of the OLED panel. Notably, Chinese display maker BOE had showcased a foldable OLED panel back in 2017, which utilized a lower temperature color filter instead of a polarizer. The company said that the was “100 times thinner and 23% more bright than OLED panels that used polarizers.”

As at the time Xiaomi released the Mi Mix in 2016 with full-screen design, the industry awash with several leaked pictures of phones with flexible displays that would be a panacea to cracked screens. The success of the full-screen design and its subsequent adoption by phone makers ensure bendable screen phones were never heard off again. That doesn’t mean the technology isn’t being utilised. Most phone makers use flexible OLED screens for their flagship models including the latest iPhone XS and XS Max but you won’t know since there is a solid glass screen above the display. Lenovo has now teased a flexible screen phone which also has a flexible fuselage and can bend up to 90 degrees.

The phone was teased in a short video shared on Lenovo Mobile Weibo account but it has been uploaded on YouTube. The video shows what should be a prototype being handled with some demonstration of how far the device can bend. As for the design, it utilises a rather slim frame with a tall build giving it an aspect ratio that should be in the region of 19:3. We can’t say if the display is LCD or OLED but it may likely be one of the flexible OLED panels that are in use. LG, Samsung and several companies in the Taiwanese supply chain and even China manufacture such flexible OLED panels.

The Weibo post also suggests the model will be released this October but no specific date was mentioned. Until something tangible comes up, we could treat this as yet another gimmick by Lenovo. Not too long ago, the company shared the renders of a slider phone with a high screen ratio which is also expected to be released soon. Both phones, if they actually come out, they could be game changers for the company. But then, we won’t get our hopes too high, not forgetting so soon the hype Lenovo built around the Z5 which was released a few months back. The Chinese company could throw us a surprise for real this time around anyway.

The LG V20 had the honour of being the first smartphone to run on Android 7.0 Nougat when it was launched last year. The device also came with a rich specs lineup which included a dual lens setup at the rear and a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC chip which helps reduce ambient noise levels by up to 50%, thus offering a better sound output. If the V20 was an amazing device, early rumours about the LG V30 brings the prospect of a more stunning device.

According to the latest leak, the LG V30 would come with a curved OLED display. Recall that LG display was said to have supplied Xiaomi the curved OLED used on the Mi Note 2. That display was not only curved, but the panel was flexible. However, due to the difficulty in mass producing the flexible OLED panel, availability of the Mi Note 2 became an issue. But according to news from South Korea, LG has gotten a better production technique and would now be able to mass produce the flexible OLED panels. Apart from the V30, the LG will also supply the new generation of OLED panels to the next generation Mi Note series device which is expected to be the Mi Note 3.

LG V30 is expected to launch in the second half of the year and would use a narrow frame design similar to the one on the recently released LG G6. In addition, the V30 is rumoured to come with a Snapdragon 835 flagship chip as well as a 4GB RAM, while some rumours say 6GB of RAM. The flagship is also expected with a Quad DAC audio decoder chip and rear dual camera setup. The device is also likely to come with a dual-lens camera at the front.

Samsung is working on testing a prototype phone with dual displays, and according to industry sources production will begin soon. Both OLED screens will be connected in the middle by a hinge and will open and close like a clam-shell phone.

This device is quite different from the Galaxy X which is expected to use a single flexible OLED screen that can be folded in half. Samsung is reported to have placed orders for components to make about 2000 to 3000 units for the dual-screen phone in H1 2017.

This dual screen phone is probably a preliminary phase for the Galaxy X. And data gotten from the tests will be used to develop its foldable phone which Samsung plans to release in limited quantities in H2 2017. Since both the dual screen phone and the Galaxy X will be manufactured in limited quantities, they will only be available to a select few.

Samsung has come a long way with its flexible displays. The Galaxy Round was the first smartphone to feature a curved display. It was released in October 2013, a month ahead of LG’s G Flex which also featured a curved display and a self-healing back. But while Samsung has continued with releasing phones with curved displays, LG stopped after the G Flex 2.
