The Light Flip 5G wants to make the humble “dumb phone” feel surprisingly premium, packing 5G, an OLED display, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 50MP camera into a classic flip design. But at around $299 (₹28,500), it costs several times more than the Nokia 2660 Flip 4G, and it is still in pre-order, with shipping scheduled to begin in April 2027. So the real question isn’t simply which phone is better: is a minimalist flip phone really worth paying this much for, or does a “dumb phone” make more sense when it is cheap and simple?

Major Features:

Design and Display

Build and Feel

The Light Flip 5G takes the traditional flip-phone format and gives it a distinctly modern treatment. Its matte finish, physical T9 keypad, stereo speakers, dual microphones with noise cancellation, and IP54 water and dust resistance make it feel more like a premium minimalist phone than a conventional feature phone. The Nokia 2660 Flip 4G takes a simpler approach, with a familiar physical keypad and a useful external display that allows users to check basic information without opening the phone.

Display Quality

The Light Flip 5G has the stronger display by a wide margin. Its 2.8-inch matte OLED panel offers a 480 × 640 resolution, compared with Nokia’s 2.8-inch TFT LCD and 240 × 320 resolution. The Light Flip’s OLED technology should deliver deeper blacks, stronger contrast, and a sharper overall image, while the matte finish suits its minimalist design particularly well. The Nokia’s external 1.77-inch display is nevertheless a practical advantage for quick notifications and caller information.

Verdict

The Nokia is perfectly adequate for basic use, but the Light Flip 5G feels substantially more premium. For buyers paying extra, the OLED display and more refined design are among the upgrades that make the price difference easier to justify.

Specifications Including Battery

Performance

The Light Flip 5G is dramatically more capable than the Nokia 2660 Flip 4G. It uses a MediaTek MT8873 processor with an octa-core CPU featuring four Cortex-A78 and four Cortex-A55 cores, alongside 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It also supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6, GPS, eSIM, USB-C, and Bluetooth 5.0. The Nokia uses the much simpler Unisoc T107 with 48MB of RAM and 128MB of internal storage. Connectivity is limited to 4G, Bluetooth 4.2, and microUSB.

Battery and Charging

The Light Flip includes a larger 1,800mAh replaceable battery and modern USB-C charging. The Nokia has a removable 1,450mAh battery and supports a charging cradle. Its simpler hardware should help it deliver solid battery life, but the Light Flip offers greater flexibility and a much more modern overall platform.

Verdict

The Light Flip’s biggest advantage is not simply speed; it is the enormous difference in capability. If the phone is intended to replace a smartphone for everyday use, its hardware makes the additional cost considerably easier to justify.

Camera

Main and Secondary Lenses

The camera hardware represents another substantial gap between the two phones. The Light Flip 5G features a 50MP rear sensor that produces 12MP photos, giving it a considerably more capable setup for everyday photography. The Nokia 2660 Flip 4G, by comparison, has a basic 0.3MP rear camera with an LED flash. It is suitable for very occasional snapshots but is clearly not designed to compete with modern phone cameras.

Selfie Camera

Neither phone has a front-facing camera, so neither provides a conventional selfie experience. The Light Flip’s substantially higher-resolution rear camera still gives it an advantage for general photography, although the absence of a selfie camera remains a limitation for users who regularly take self-portraits or expect front-facing video features.

Verdict

The Light Flip wins decisively on camera hardware. However, this alone is unlikely to justify spending considerably more. Its stronger camera makes the premium more appealing when combined with the phone’s modern processor, display, storage, and connectivity. For buyers who rarely take photos, the Nokia’s basic camera may be sufficient.

Pricing

The Light Flip 5G is priced around $299 unlocked, or approximately ₹28,500, and is currently available for pre-order, with shipping beginning in April 2027. The Nokia 2660 Flip 4G is positioned at a much lower price point, making it fundamentally a budget alternative rather than a direct premium competitor. The Nokia 2660 Flip is available for around $80, or approximately ₹5000.

Is the Price Justified?

The Light Flip commands a substantial premium, so its value depends entirely on what the buyer expects from a flip phone. Paying more gets users 5G connectivity, an OLED display, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a significantly more capable processor and camera, Wi-Fi 6, eSIM support, USB-C, and a more modern overall experience. If the goal is simply affordable calling and messaging, those upgrades may be unnecessary. For someone deliberately looking for a premium minimalist phone, however, the additional capabilities have genuine value.

Verdict

The Nokia wins on affordability, but the Light Flip offers far more for the money. The premium is justified for buyers who want a modern flip phone capable of replacing more smartphone functions; otherwise, the Nokia remains the more economical choice.

Conclusion

Light Flip 5G is not simply a more expensive version of the Nokia 2660 Flip 4G. It represents a different interpretation of what a modern flip phone can be. The combination of a matte OLED display, 5G, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, 50MP camera, Wi-Fi 6, eSIM, USB-C, stereo speakers, noise-cancelling microphones, and a replaceable battery gives it a significant technological advantage.

The Nokia, meanwhile, focuses on simplicity, with its external display, physical keypad, straightforward software, and low-cost hardware.

Verdict

For buyers deciding whether to spend more, the key question is whether those upgrades matter. The Light Flip 5G is worth the extra money if the goal is a premium, minimalist phone that still provides modern performance, connectivity, storage, and camera capabilities.

Its price is difficult to justify for someone who only needs calls and basic messaging, where the Nokia 2660 Flip does the job for far less. But for users specifically looking to escape the distractions of a conventional smartphone without giving up modern features, the Light Flip makes a much stronger case for the premium.

Flip phones are almost extinct save for some few companies like LG, Samsung, Kyocera that still manufactures them. The advent of smartphones ensured flip phones and other feature phones became near extinct. With smartphones came several apps and features that keep you occupied all day long. However a company in Utah, US is conducting a social experiment dubbed Flip Phone Challenge that seeks to determine how it feels to use a flip phone at this present time.

Make no mistake, there are still some persons stuck with their flip phones with no immediate plan to let go. The experiment isn’t for such persons, rather it is for persons who are smartphone addicts and can’t go a day without turning on their phones. In the words of the company; “Our ideal candidate will be a self-proclaimed smartphone fiend who’s always up to date on the latest tech news. They’ll be organized, detail-oriented, and willing to persevere (through a smartphone-less week)!” The candidate will take home $1000 if he carries out the task successfully.

The company says the goal of the Flip Phone Challenge is to send someone “back to the 90s” to find out just how much and in what ways people rely on their smartphones in 2019. The research will also determine if the lack of a smartphone could affect sleep patterns, productivity, punctuality and more. To get the candidate into the right frame of mind that reenacts the 90s, the company will provide the candidate with some stuff which it termed Boredom Buster Swag Bag (survival kit) and this includes a physical map in place of GPS, pocket phonebook which will make up for the limited phone storage space, notepad and some CDs from the ’90s to replace Spotify and other music apps.

Flip phones have always attracted a small part of the crowd, but as phones became smarter and screens became bigger, their design wasn’t considered viable. As a result, there are hardly any good flip design smartphones in the market today. Samsung did show us how beautiful these phones can be even today, loaded with powerful specs inside, but they are quite costly and are limited to specific markets like South Korea and China.

VKWorld T2 Plus is like a cheaper ticket to the world of flip smartphones. The company has been releasing interesting devices for the past few months, like the Nokia 3310 clone but this device should be even more interesting, considering how limited our options are in this segment. But T2 Plus can’t just rely on its flip design to attract attention, it needs to have good specs as well.

The phone is said to upgrade the RAM, ROM, chipset, as well as battery as compared to its slow predecessor, the VKWorld T2. To be honest, that doesn’t tell us much, given that the T2 was powered by the old MT6580 quad-core chip, which made it a 3G only smartphone. So, we’ll have to wait for some real chipset, RAM details to get excited about the device.

What we do know is that the VKWorld T2 Plus will come with a 4.02-inch screen, same as the T2 but with upgraded resolution. It could either be 1280 x 720 or 1280 x 768, translating into 366 ppi or 372 ppi respectively. That’s way better than 480p on the T2. But the new T2 Plus won’t just feature a single display as the phone is said to come with dual screens and a physical keyboard. As for the design, leather and glass seem to be the two materials of choice and it is said that the phone is in trial production right now.

Expect to get more details in the coming weeks. The T2 Plus should launch sometime in the next couple of months. Their YouTube page says that the price is under $150, but we can’t confirm it yet. Meanwhile, take a look at the short teaser of the T2 Plus below. Which design do you prefer, Glass or Leather?

Flip phones or clam-shell phones, it doesn’t matter which one you like, used to be the rave back when feature phones were in vogue. They had this aura of sophistication they gave a wielder. They get a call, flip it open, place it next to their ear and start talking. No need for dragging call icons across the screen like we do now. Then touch-screen devices came into existence and people started to move away from flip phones to phones with the candy bar form factor. Now, if you were to pick 1000 random people and ask them for their phones, the chance of seeing a flip phone is next to none.

Samsung (and LG and Gionee) wants to change that. Samsung believes there is still a market for flip phones and have been releasing flip phones for a couple of years now. This year alone, they have released two flip phones, the Galaxy Folder 2 and Samsung W2016. The latter can be classified as a mid-range phone as it comes with 3GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 16MP rear camera. Samsung already has a successor in the works, the SM-W2017 (codename: Veyron) whose live images surfaced online recently.

The SM-W2017 has been reported to feature a 4.2” Super-AMOLED screen, a snapdragon 820 chip, 4GB RAM, 64GB ROM, and a 12MP rear camera that can shoot 4K videos. There’s a 5MP camera in front for selfies and a USB Type-C port. When you close the phone, there’s another screen up-front. There’s no mention of the type of display but there’s a chance it might be the same type as the main one.

The rear looks a lot like that of the S7 and appears to be sporting a fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor. There’s also mention of NFC and Samsung Pay.

Like the other flip phones launched, this may also be a China only device. We don’t have details of a release date and price.

Flip phones were once the popular choice of customers. But ever since the advent of the touchscreen smartphones, flip phones have lost their charm. Or has it? Gionee thinks that there is still a market for flip smartphones which is why it is all set to unveil its super high-end and powerful Gionee W909 flip phone by the end of this month.

Till now, the company had been pretty subtle when it came to the teasers for the phone’s release. However, earlier today, the company jumped the guns and revealed a few interesting specs of the upcoming flip phone.

First of all, the Gionee W909 is confirmed to get 4GB of RAM on board. This will make it the first flip phone with such massive amount of RAM, which usually only flagship smartphones can boast of. Further, the phone will feature 64GB of internal storage, which should be enough for all your files.

If you are a photo freak, Gionee has got that covered for you as well. The W909 will come with a 16MP high-definition camera, which is once again flagship worthy specs. So, it looks like, Gionee is going to market this as a powerful piece of tech, in the form of a clamshell design. The company has also confirmed a fingerprint sensor on the device.

Clearly, Gionee W909 is made for someone who loves flip phones, but don’t want to sacrifice on the specs. Although the above-mentioned hardware are quite powerful, we will have to wait and see what kind of chip powers the phone (probably Helio P10). Also, the display quality and battery life are some of the other areas which the company hopefully won’t let us down.

Gionee will release the W909 flip phone on March 29, which is just over a week away.

So, what do you think? Any takers for a flagship level flip phone from Gionee?
