The company has now unveiled the Flyme 9 custom ROM which has been a long time coming. The new ROM takes over from the Flyme 8 which was released in 2019 although Meizu pushed the Flyme 8.1 to some models last year.

The long wait will likely not be in vein as the new ROM comes with several imrovemnets and new features. Since this is a major update, it features significant changes in the design, privacy, functions, efficiency and other aspects.

In terms of the design, the desktop icons are now in a square boxes with chamfered edges and beaiutigful color schemes that blend well with the background. Each third-party application can also rely on algorithms to achieve consistent icon styles. Some system-level plug-ins have been added, and some plug-ins can be dragged into the negative screen (Aicy overview).

The notification and control centers has also been redesigned. At the same time, the notifications and control keys are displayed side by side in a horizontal screen orientation, which is convenient to operate.

Meizu has also visually simplified the fingerprint icon and application interface, removing the decorative elements and retaining only the most direct page logic and necessary elements.

You also get some interesting screensavers and wallpapers as well as new themes. The Flyme 9 also includes Flyme 8 themes allowing users to travel through time and space and reminisce about the classics. Alive wallpaper supports dark and light color modes and can be transformed through different levels.

The interface is also embedded with dynamic effects, covering screen fingerprint unlocking, facial recognition, screen rotation, gestures, etc. The icon self-layering algorithm can have smooth and smart animation even if the application is unpopular.

Flyme for Watch

In addition to Flyme 9, Meizu also unveiled the all-new Flyme for Watch which is specifically designed for smartwatches. The smartwatch and fitness tracker manufacturing sector is growing very fast.

Starting from the hardware features and interaction methods, Meizu has newly defined the design language, and extended the sense of order of Flyme 9 to the small screen. It is equipped with a redesigned launcher, notification center and shortcut switch, which brings easy and convenient interaction.

In terms of vision, Flyme for Watch supports highly customizable dials and provides more than 30 small components. Users can freely use their creativity to match. It supports album dial settings for dynamic and static pictures. It also has a unique art dial to choose from, anytime, anywhere.

For functions, Flyme for Watch not only supports conventional notification synchronization, music control and other functions, but also supports eSIM independent call function. Tat means it allows the watch to function ireespective of a phone. There is also a Find My Phone feature onboard.

At the same time, Flyme for Watch also comes with the custom Aicy voice assistant and it functions in the same way as on a obile phone. That is, it provide users with a real smart watch experience. The introduction of the Meizu Pay payment tool also expands more usage scenarios for Meizu watches.

The custom watch ROM also supports the installation of third-party apps. The most advanced apps include Air Travel, Baidu Maps, NetEase Cloud Music, Alipay, Sogou Input Method, QQ and many other watch-side apps.

Aiming at the two natural pain points of smartwatch performance and battery life, Meizu also introduced the OneMind smart engine on the watch side to customize the core capabilities in depth according to the hardware characteristics and usage scenarios of the watch, including as many as 300 special optimizations.

Meizu announced during the event that it will release its first smartwatch equipped with Flyme for Watch in May this year.

Now as Android 10 officially supports dark mode, the company has decided to adopt the native solution in its latest Flyme OS 8 along with an option to force dark mode on unsupported apps.

Meizu’s FlymeOS is one of the richest Android skin in terms of features and functionality. Also, it was one of the first to bring dark mode which is now ubiquitous. Now, according to a Meizu FlymeOS executive, the Android skin will adopt the official Android 10 dark mode to enable dark mode on supported as well as unsupported apps.

Normally, on Android 10, when the user turns on dark mode, the supported apps also reflect the change. But Meizu will go one step ahead and provide an option in FlymeOS 8 to force dark mode on unsupported apps as well. Anyway, this features is not new as it is present on ColorOS 7 and Realme UI. Even OxygenOS is about to get this feature according to a finding in a recent open beta update for the OnePlus 7 series.

For those who don’t know, dark mode on FlymeOS 8 is in its second iteration called Night Mode 2.0. Enabling it will reflect even on static and dynamic wallpapers along with UI and apps. Do check our launch coverage of FlymeOS 8 to know all of its features.

So let’s take a quick look at all of the upgrades on the Flyme 8 OS down below.

Flyme 8 comes with over 1000 visual upgrades. Meizu has decided to change the home screen layout to 4 x 6 with improved icons even for third-party apps.

The OS features something called as a Smart Wallpaper that extends the desktop wallpaper to the lock screen as well as the AOD with a seamless animation when switching between them.

Meizu says the new Flyme 8 makes better use of the white space in the UI by adopting a new grid system, line spacing, and font size.

Over 300 new animations have been added including for AOD.

Flyme 8 features smart mini window 2.0 which is basically a small pop up window allowing for better multitasking.

Night Mode 2.0 offers darker shades throughout the UI for a better night viewing experience.

Game Mode 4.0 matches the game’s interface with darker graphics. There even a call screening feature in the Game Mode which records incoming calls while gaming and makes it available to the user after the session.

Super Night Mode 2.0 comes with better handheld night photography.

There’s even a Super Night Selfie mode for taking selfies with the front camera at night, in addition to the regular backlight mode.

Flyme 8 also adds AR features into the UI. You can use the phone’s camera to create AR avatars with the ability to customize facial features or other body parts.

There’s a special Digital Health section as well which shows your individual app usage along with the option to limit usage for each app. It’s very similar to the Digital Wellbeing app from Google and aims to prevent you from being addicted to the phone.

Flyme 8 also features a brand new ‘Aicy’ digital assistant. Aicy can assist you with calls, texts, weather, shopping, and other day to day activities.

The new OS also comes with predictive features. For example, it can pop up the music app when you connect your headphones after learning your usual behavior.

Even as of several years back when other custom ROMs are being plagued with issues, Meizu’s Flyme OS has been outstanding. But in the past two years, Flyme’s progression seems to have slowed down drastically.

As early as the beginning of this year, Meizu Technology’s founder Huang Zhang (Jerry Wang) had revealed that Flyme 8 was already in the works. Since then, several details have been revealed but no date was fixed for the release. That is about to change as Meizu may officially unveil Flyme 8 on August 28. A press invite sent out by the Chinese company showed the company will the Flyme 8 OS alongside the Meizu 16s Pro. Already, the Meizu 16s Pro is expected to drop on August 28 and reservation is even ongoing.

Flyme 8 is expected to bring a new, refreshed look to the custom ROM with new features such as fingerprint vortex animation, small window 2.0, home guard 3.0, and game mode 4.0. The Meizu 16s Pro is expected to be the first model to get the new custom ROM version. Since the Flyme 8 has been a long time coming, we don’t expect the company to delay before rolling out updates to its old models.

The company has today officially confirmed that the Flyme 8 will be unveiled on 13th August in China.

The launch of Flyme OS 8 comes a bit earlier than expected. Last month, it was reported that Meizu’s Flyme 8 will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year, which means somewhere from October to December.

As per the previous reports, the company had started internal testing of the upcoming Meizu Flyme 8 user interface in the second quarter of this year and the testing phase will be concluded in the third quarter. Now, it seems that testing has been completed successfully and thus, the company is all set to launch it on 13th August.

Earlier this year, Meizu’s product manager Chen Jiaxuan had shared the poster of the upcoming Flyme 8 user interface, which revealed that along with a wide number of features, the company is focusing on making then UI fast and stable.

Some of the core features of the Flyme 8 have already been introduced in the Flyme 7.3. Along with a few new features, what remains to be seen is how fast and smooth the upcoming Flyme 8 will be. To know that, we’ll have to wait until the company releases the update officially.

The current version of Meizu’s custom user interface for Android is Flyme 7.3, which integrates the Meizu Pay app with the Flyme system for touchless payments experience using the bank, bus and other access cards. It also comes with DC Dimming feature as well as the internal apps like Shutdown Wake 3.0, Smart Free 3.0, Resource Manager 2.0, Memory compression 2.0, etc have been optimized for better performance.

Now, a new leak related to the update plans of the Flyme 8 reveals that the update will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year.

Several reports indicate that Meizu had started internal testing of the upcoming Meizu Flyme 8 user interface in the second quarter of this year and the testing phase will be concluded in the third quarter.

If the reports from the Meizu Forum are to be believed, then the company has now started testing the upcoming update with a test group. This hints that the arrival of the Flyme 8 from Meizu is not far away.

All the latest news regarding Meizu has been about their upcoming device, the Meizu 16Xs. While I’m quite eager to see that device considering I love Meizu, some other news has shown up that’s also quite interesting. A Meizu product manager teased a poster on Weibo that basically confirms Flyme 8 is imminent, and promptly deleted it. Will we see it launch alongside the Meizu 16Xs on the 30th of May?

It makes a lot of sense to launch a new version of their UI alongside a new device. It lets you show off all the new functions on shiny new hardware, and it’s just an effective way to build excitement. Google does it, Xiaomi does it, and Meizu’s been doing it for a long time now. If it’s true, then it adds to the list of things I’ll be excited to see come the Meizu 16Xs launch day.

Editor’s Pick: Samsung’s deepfake AI can Create your Video from a Single Photo

The Meizu 16Xs will be arriving with a notch-less display of 6.2 inches. The AMOLED screen will offer full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2232 pixels and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The display of the phone will be embedded with an in-screen fingerprint reader. The handset will be backed by a 4,000mAh battery, and may feature a 48MP triple camera setup.

We’ve no idea what SoC the device will come with, since we’ve received conflicting reports. It’s possible we’ll see a Snapdragon 710, but newer reports claim a Snapdragon 675. On top of all this, we’ve got the new features we can expect to see from Flyme 8 that we have yet to hear about. It’s certainly quite an exciting time to be a Meizu fan, and I can’t wait to see what comes out of it.
