Meizu, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, is on the lookout for a new Chinese name for its Flyme OS. The company announced on November 9 that it would seek public suggestions for a new name for its operating system.

After gathering potential names, Meizu has now launched a voting campaign to select the final choice.

Meizu to give Flyme OS a new Chinese name

The campaign consists of a total of 32 names and four rounds of voting. The first round of voting is now open, where users will vote among 32 names.

The 16 names with the highest number of votes will be promoted to the next round. This process will continue until there are four finalists.

The final round of voting will be held at a press conference, where users will vote for their preferred name from the list of four finalists. The name with the most votes will be the new Chinese name for Flyme OS.

The first round of voting is now open in the Meizu community. Each user can only vote once per round. The first round of voting will close today at 23:59:59 (GMT +8).

As of the publication of this article, 5316 people have participated in the voting. While we were unable to look for the vote count of each name, major Chinese media have reported that more than half of the users voted for the name “无界” or “Unbounded” (translated).

This name is considered to be logical as Meizu launched the slogan “New Generation, Unbounded Ecosystem” for Flyme OS 10. The name is also fitting for Meizu’s goal of creating a “borderless” ecosystem. 

Reports from domestic media say that Meizu has also applied to register the trademarks of “Unbounded Car” and “Unbounded Mobile Phone”.

The company will announce the final name for Flyme OS at a press conference in the coming weeks. We will keep you updated on it.

It appears the new trend in the Chinese mobile industry is to develop software for cars. Huawei was one of the pioneers with its HiCar software solution that helps to create a seamless experience between mobile phones and cars. Now, Meizu is also toeing the same path, and based on a teaser shared on its Weibo page, we may see the first vehicle powered by its Flyme For Car OS announced tomorrow.

The official Meizu account shared a teaser image that shows the silhouette of a car. The image has a caption that loosely translates into “The first partnership____, let’s talk tomorrow”.

Based on the image and the caption, it is safe to say that the announcement tomorrow is for the first vehicle powered by Meizu’s own software.

Little is known about Flyme For Car since Meizu first announced that the OS was in development last month. We expect tomorrow’s event will reveal all there is to know about the operating system, and hopefully, the unique experience it will offer.

Meizu introduced dark mode, known as Night Mode on Flyme OS 7 long before Google brought it in native Android. Now as Android 10 officially supports dark mode, the company has decided to adopt the native solution in its latest Flyme OS 8 along with an option to force dark mode on unsupported apps.

Meizu’s FlymeOS is one of the richest Android skin in terms of features and functionality. Also, it was one of the first to bring dark mode which is now ubiquitous. Now, according to a Meizu FlymeOS executive, the Android skin will adopt the official Android 10 dark mode to enable dark mode on supported as well as unsupported apps.

Normally, on Android 10, when the user turns on dark mode, the supported apps also reflect the change. But Meizu will go one step ahead and provide an option in FlymeOS 8 to force dark mode on unsupported apps as well. Anyway, this features is not new as it is present on ColorOS 7 and Realme UI. Even OxygenOS is about to get this feature according to a finding in a recent open beta update for the OnePlus 7 series.

For those who don’t know, dark mode on FlymeOS 8 is in its second iteration called Night Mode 2.0. Enabling it will reflect even on static and dynamic wallpapers along with UI and apps. Do check our launch coverage of FlymeOS 8 to know all of its features.

A couple of smartphone manufacturers such as Apple and OnePlus offer inbuilt SOS function for emergency situations. Through the official Meizu Flyme Weibo account, the company has confirmed it will be soon rolling out SOS emergency help feature. The said function can be used to only call emergency number, but also send location details at regular time interval.

Meizu has confirmed that it will be releasing closed beta followed by open beta versions of the SOS emergency help feature. After successfully testing, the stable version of the feature will be rolled out to all the users.

The official screenshots released by Meizu show that the feature will be available as “SOS Emergency Help” section in Settings page. Once activated that the feature will automatically dial 110, 119, 120 and other emergency numbers and it will also send a location message every 5 minutes. Meizu is yet to confirm on the devices that will be treated with the test version of the SOS help feature.

In related news, Xiaomi is beta testing SOS feature on some of its devices such as Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi MIX 2, Mi 6, Mi 5 and Redmi Note 4X. At present, these devices that are running on MIUI 10 developer ROM can try the emergency help function. By pressing the power button 5 times, Xiaomi’s emergency help function will send help information to the pre-defined emergency contact number.

They say “better late than never” and that is exactly what Meizu is doing with the Nougat update for its devices. Just as we eagerly anticipate the final unveiling of Android O, the Chinese company has released a list of devices getting Android Nougat.

If you own any of the following devices, you may want to do a happy dance at the end of this post: Pro 6 Plus, Pro 6, Pro 6s, Pro 5, MX6, M5 Note, M3 Note, and M3 Max.

Meizu says owners of any of these devices will be able to register for the open beta program from today till July 2. Update itself will begin rolling out to devices on the 10th of July.

The update will be in three batches: first batch will receive the update on July 10, the second batch on July 17, and the final batch on July 31.

Meizu‘s beautiful Flyme OS interface was announced to become available for third-party models last month with the OnePlus 3T, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Nexus 6P, ZUK Z2 and a host of other Qualcomm phones billed as the first set of models which will have compatible versions of the new Meizu interface. Today, Meizu’s Flyme 6 OS has the honour of welcoming a new third-party model, the ZUK Edge.

Although Lenovo refuted claims that it is killing its own brand for the Motorola brand, the company indeed disclosed that it would be resting the ZUK brand. What this means is that the ZUK Edge is the last model that would be released under the ZUK brand. Although the ZUK Edge comes pre-installed with the latest Android Nougat the chances of regular updates hitting the model is low, even though Lenovo promised it would continue providing updates. However, the Flyme ROM for ZUK Edge gives users of the ZUK model sort of a lifeline, a second option of changing the interface from the company’s ZUI to Meizu’s latest Flyme 6.0.

Flyme 6 stable ROM for Lenovo’s ZUK Edge is available on the Flyme website but it must be noted that it requires some bit of expertise on flashing a phone’s ROM to do this. Also, it is important to note that Flyme 6 downgrades the ZUK Edge to Android 6.0 Marshmallow which the Flyme 6 is based on whereas the ZUI is already on Android 7.0 Nougat. Meizu has announced the release of its Flyme 6 OS for third-party models just as the company was tipped to do. The company has officially revealed the list of models that would support the package and really, it is a surprise package. The first batch of the models includes the OnePlus 3T just as rumoured. Smartphone models like the Nexus 6P, ZUK Z2, Xiaomi Mi 3, Mi Note (high-end version). Redmi Note 3 (high-end version), Redmi Note 2, Nexus 6 and several other models are also among the first batch.

Already, firmware for eight different models is available for download on the Meizu Flyme website. These eight models are the first batch of a long list of devices can be flashed to the Flyme 6 ROM. Here’s a list of the models and the download link. Installation is by flash recovery and there is a tutorial up on the blog. However, as you’d know by now, flash recovery is not something you do without prior knowledge or else you could permanently brick your device.

It is interesting to note that most of the models on the list are powered by a Qualcomm processor at a time Meizu uses MediaTek chip on its models. It is possible Meizu is trying to consolidate on its recent settlement with Qualcomm with this move. It could also be due to the superior firepower of the Qualcomm chip which would allow the Flyme OS lag on the models it is flash into.

Meizu launched the Meizu M5 around November last year in China and they added the M5 Note to the series in December. The Meizu M5s is also expected any moment from now but that isn’t the news. The latest news regarding the two Meizu smartphones is that they may soon be available in other countries outside of China.

The M5 and M5 Note were spotted recently on Postel in Indonesia which is the country’s telecoms regulator just like US FCC and China’s TENAA. The listing on the Indonesian regulatory agency’s website showed the device has been certified and that seems to have been done yesterday. However, there is no other information as to when the devices will be launched in Indonesia or any other country and the price the device will carry. Suffice it to say that the M5 Note starts at 899 yuan ($130), while the M5 starts at 699 yuan (around $100) in China and those prices may not hold water, considering the costs of shipping, tax, and other stuff will have to be included in the mix.

It is worthy of note that the international version of the Meizu M5 will launch running on Android-based FlymeOS as against the YunOS which the Chinese edition featured.

Yesterday, Meizu hosted the media to an interview session which had the company’s President and Vice-President as the guest. During the interview, the company talked about its 2016 market performance, revealing that it did record a total figure of 22 million units in smartphone sales last year. This is said to be an encouraging figure as it represented a 10 % growth from its 2015 sales record, despite declining growth in the smartphone market.

The Meizu officials also talked about other pertinent issues like the Qualcomm patent agreement signed recently and its 2017 product plan. Unfortunately, the company has stated that despite the settlement with Qualcomm, we may still not see a Meizu flagship this year with a Qualcomm chip onboard, as the Meizu flagships for 2017 will likely still use MediaTek MTK chips. As earlier reported when the Meizu product plan leaked, the brand will likely have a Snapdragon-powered Meizu smartphone in the fourth quarter of the year, around December to be specific. It was also revealed that Meizu’s Flyme OS has got over 50 million users presently.

Despite the no-show of a Snapdragon-powered Meizu flagship, the settlement is of immense importance because it will allow the company to enter more foreign markets without fear of patent infringement. 2 million of its 22 million units sold last year, was from markets outside China. That figure has the potential to rise further this year.  Also, the company hinted at a gradual increase in prices of its smartphones this year, occasioned by an increase in prices of raw materials. Meizu is known for its moderate price tags on its smartphones and it won’t ridiculous if there is a slight adjustments in its price tags on subsequent smartphones.

Meizu announced a new version of its own android based OS during the launch of the Meizu M5 Note. The new OS called Flyme 6 will be coming out of closed beta tomorrow and in addition to the numerous new features already listed, a new feature called Time Machine will be making its way to the OS.

According to Meizu, Time Machine will let users retrieve accidentally deleted contacts. The feature will let you access deleted contacts data as far back as two years (the data starts recording from the day you start using the feature). So two years from now, you should still be able to access contacts deleted between now and December, 2018. To make use of the feature, users will have to got to Settings > Data Cloud Sync > Time Machine.

Meizu also says they have optimized the contacts synchronization speed by up to 65% and reduced traffic consumption by up to 66%. So a 300 contact phone-book should synchronize in about 9 seconds.

Meizu’s launch event kicked off over an hour ago and the first thing the company introduced was their new OS, Flyme 6. The new OS was unveiled by the head of Flyme, Yang Yan, and it brings a lot of improvements and new features.

Flyme 6 is a completely redesigned OS from the ground up according to Mr. Yan. The OS uses new main colors and maintains a uniform color distribution across its interface. Flyme 6 has more than 200 new animations including a new charging animation and over 1000 performance optimizations.

Meizu says Flyme OS 6 is powered by their own artificial intelligence engine called One Mind but there is no explanation on how it works.

The new OS is focused on security and privacy. First, you can now set up to three different fingerprints to unlock the phone into different modes depending on the finger used to unlock. The three modes available are normal mode, guest mode, and privacy mode. To get a clearer picture, imagine Xiaomi’s Second Space function that launched with MIUI 8 which allows you to have two different modes on the same phone but in this case, the phone unlocks into a particular mode based on the finger used to unlock the device.

Meizu says Flyme OS 6 also takes user data pretty seriously. Offering encryption across apps likes photos, contacts, and files. Payment security has also been upgraded and the OS now supports more payment platforms.

Meizu Flyme 6 will be available as a closed beta today. However, come December 30 it will be available as a public beta. The Meizu Pro 6, MX6, MX5, Pro 5, M3E, M3 Note, M2 Note, M1 Note and some other phones have been listed as getting Flyme 6.

The last time we wrote about a Meizu tablet coming is in 2014, same time the Xiaomi MiPad was set to drop. While Xiaomi’s first tablet dropped, Meizu’s own is yet to see the light of day. Presently, Meizu has opened an official Weibo account for its tablet division. The Weibo account already follows a number of Meizu officials but is yet to get its first post. In addition, an image teasing the Meizu Flyme OS for tablets also appeared on the scene recently.

Yesterday, it was reported that a netizen successfully installed the Yun OS into their Mi 3. Now, not willing to let the Mi 3 enjoy all the fame and glory, someone also installed the Yun OS into their Meizu MX3. Does it work?

As the screenshots posted by this netizen show, the Yun OS’s lock screen, desktop, and notification bar are pretty clean and simple. Common features such as the Cloud Album and Safety Center are there. According to this netizen, his MX3 experienced high fluidity and better performance after installing the Yun OS 2.9.2.

In addition, the Yun OS is said to save more power than the Flyme OS but its unclear how long it can last. Many think that the snapshots are a sign that Meizu and Alibaba will work together. Meizu’s ex-CEO, Li Nan, did confirm that Meizu and Alibaba were in talks regarding a possible partnership. Could the Yun OS working with the MX3 be a result of this partnership?

FlyMe OS is the one of Android custom ROM that developed by Meizu and now that custom ROM has been update which uses Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, since the KitKat is the newer Android version for now.

Meizu really want to open the Flyme system, according to Vice President of meizu, Li Nan, Meizu is now working with third-party developers and ready to share the FlyMe system to other manufacturer.

Last week, the Meizu founder J.Wong has said in his interview “we will find the Meizu FlyMe OS in Xiaomi devices”, and now they show off his statement.

Today, there have been two photos of Xiaomi Mi3 running Flyme OS, this pciture is come from inside Meizu. From the image point of view, this TD version of Xiaomi smartphone is running the latest Flyme OS v3.4.5, not all function and fatures is working preperly.

This is just another rumor from Meizu engineers only, not and this port is not officially approved, so there is only a semi-finished products. Including Smartbar other features still exist, and support dropdown hover, but this not stable.

And if this happend this will make the two possibilities, the first, Meizu will be more popular, this happened with MIUI that also available as Custom ROM and the second is the user seems moving to other UI, if they didn’t like the interface, but this is my personal opinion.
