<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This year at SID 2022 Display Week, </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">LG</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> was invited as one of the more esteemed panelists at the event, and during the company’s showcase, the brand revealed that its research and development team has successfully developed a foldable OLED device that can fold and unfold from 0 to 360 degrees.</span></p>
<figure id="attachment_460496" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-460496" style="width: 480px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-460496 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/LG-360-Foldable-OLED-2.gif?x44794" alt="LG 360 Foldable OLED 2" width="480" height="270" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-460496" class="wp-caption-text">LG 360 Degree Foldable OLED</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">During the event, </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">LG</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Display showed off a Foldable OLED touchscreen that is 8.03 inches when unfolded horizontally. However, what makes this display unique is that the panel could be folded inwards or folded outwards, in fact, it could be folded at any angle from 0 to 360 degrees.</span></p>
<figure id="attachment_460498" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-460498" style="width: 970px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-460498" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/lg-foldable-360-degree.jpg?x44794" alt="lg foldable 360 degree" width="970" height="646" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/lg-foldable-360-degree.jpg 970w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/lg-foldable-360-degree-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/lg-foldable-360-degree-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/lg-foldable-360-degree-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/lg-foldable-360-degree-631x420.jpg 631w" sizes="(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-460498" class="wp-caption-text">Source: LG</figcaption></figure>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Durability-wise, it seems that </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">LG</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is using UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) technology for the Foldable OLED, and the exterior screen is coated with an anti-fingerprint material to keep the device looking spick and span always. </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">LG</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> also claims that the 360 Foldable OLED is rated for 200,000 folds under normal use and other technical details for the display include its 2480 x 2200 pixel resolution allowing for a sharp 413 PPI, 109.9% coverage of DCI-P3 colour gamut and the panel is rated for 430 nits of brightness under typical situations and can reach up to 600 nits of peak brightness in challenging situations. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another reveal during the event was the company’s 17-inch foldable OLED panel, but this time around it doesn’t fold 360 degrees, it folds at a rather conventional 180 degrees inwards, just like a laptop. <p>According to <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=2413" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em> </a>report, smartphones from these aforementioned brands will be launching later this year. The report claims that the OLED panel for Oppo features a clamshell design, folding from top to bottom. This display has a size of 7.7 inch unfolded, while the outer display will have a size between 1.5 to 2 inches. Notably, this is larger than the 6.7 inch foldable OLED used on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-5g/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung Galaxy Z Flip</a>, which launched back in 2020.</p>
<p>Last year, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/12/inno-day-2020-oppo-likely-to-unveil-technologies-like-infolding-phone-with-in-screen-camera-100x-digital-zoom-65w-wireless-charging/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chinese tech giant had unveiled an out folding 7.7 inch foldable screen prototype</a>, which was sourced and developed in partnership with Samsung Display, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/boe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">BOE</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/visionox/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Visionox</a>. But now, it seems like the South Korean firm is its sole supplier. Similarly, Xiaomi is also switching to an in folding design as it is reportedly aiming to launch a foldable smartphone with an 8.03 inch display. Meanwhile, its outer screen will have a size of 6.38 inch, which is being developed by Samsung Display and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/csot/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CSOT</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-221155 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/An-LG-foldable-phone-could-be-presented-at-CES-2019-title-1.png?x44794" alt="Samsung" width="1280" height="801" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/An-LG-foldable-phone-could-be-presented-at-CES-2019-title-1.png 1280w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/An-LG-foldable-phone-could-be-presented-at-CES-2019-title-1-300x188.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/An-LG-foldable-phone-could-be-presented-at-CES-2019-title-1-768x481.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/An-LG-foldable-phone-could-be-presented-at-CES-2019-title-1-1024x641.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></p>
<p>Meanwhile, Google has also requested the company to develop a foldable OLED panel with a size of around 7.6 inches. In recent times, in folding screens have become more common than out folding panels. This is primarily due to it being easier to secure the curvature needed for the panel to fold with the out folding method. Thanks to the brand&#8217;s experience with these types of display, it isn&#8217;t surprising that various companies are reaching out to it for foldable panels.</p>

This change would bring various improvements for the display technology along with multiple benefits.</p>

<p>According to a new report from UBI Research, known firms that manufacture such foldable OLED displays are working on bringing color filters that will allow panels to become thinner and brighter. For those unaware, Polarizers can be found in OLED panels and are used to deflect reflections from external lights.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/07/14/lenovo-legion-gaming-phone-will-feature-dual-liquid-cooling-system-with-14-temperature-sensors/">Lenovo Legion Gaming Phone will feature dual liquid cooling system with 14 temperature sensors</a></strong></h6>
<p>The versions of OLED that is currently available in the market generally stack and encapsulation layer, polarizer, optically clear adhesive, a cover window on top of the light emitting layer. Furthermore, the cover window is made from a polyimide film or <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/utg/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ultra thin glass</a> (depending on the manufacturer).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-331980 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/1185_1310_2859.jpg?x44794" alt="Foldable OLED" width="600" height="316" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/1185_1310_2859.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/1185_1310_2859-300x158.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>While vendors were already using polarizers with a thickness within the 10 micrometer range over the 100 micrometer ones used in previous generations, this is still considered thick and lowers the overall brightness of the OLED panel. Notably, Chinese display maker <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/boe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">BOE</a> had showcased a foldable OLED panel back in 2017, which utilized a lower temperature color filter instead of a polarizer. The company said that the was &#8220;100 times thinner and 23% more bright than OLED panels that used polarizers.&#8221;</p>
