Interesting rumors are surfacing on X, (formerly Twitter) about Samsung potentially developing cheaper foldable phones. These phones, dubbed the “Galaxy Z Fold FE” and “Galaxy Z Flip FE,” would fall under Samsung’s Fan Edition brand, known for offering more affordable versions of existing devices. For example, the Galaxy S21 FE.

The leaked screenshot has an Exynos CPU starting with 2, which raises skepticism

However, some skepticism is advised here. The source of these leaks isn’t exactly known for perfect accuracy, and the details themselves raise some questions. For example, the leaked screenshot for the Z Fold FE mentions an unknown Exynos processor starting with “2” – either a nonexistent Exynos 2300 chip or an outdated leak. Additionally, some insiders suggest only one of these foldable FEs might actually see the light of day, but which one remains unclear.

So, while these screenshots are far from confirmation, they’re not entirely out of the blue. Whispers about Samsung venturing into Fan Edition foldables have been around before. It’s best to take this information with a grain of salt – we can’t be certain and wouldn’t recommend getting your hopes up just yet.

Samsung Dominates Q3 Foldable Smartphone Sales with 45% Market Share

When it comes to foldable smartphones, Samsung, the first brand that comes to mind, stayed at the top this quarter. The company grabbed a 45% share of the market. At first glance, it might raise eyebrows that the company’s numbers went down by 75%. However, when you consider the increasing competition and sales from other brands, it’s not all that surprising. This is especially true when you think about how Samsung’s models are pricier compared to all its competitors.

Right now, Honor and Huawei are both in the second spot in the market, sharing it with a 6% market share each. Other brands like OPPO, vivo, and Xiaomi are also in the mix. Experts are saying that the last quarter of 2023 might bring a change. They predict a significant drop in smartphone sales, with an expected decrease of as much as 36%.

Unfortunately, it looks like Samsung might be hit hard by this situation. As mentioned earlier, even though Samsung’s market share is decreasing, their positive outlook is mainly because the overall market is growing. To put it simply, while Samsung’s piece of the pie from a 100-slice cake is getting smaller, it’s not a big deal because the whole cake is getting bigger.

However, if sales drop and competition heats up in the last quarter of the year, and both the overall market and Samsung’s share go down, the Korean manufacturer could face a real problem. Still, there’s nothing we can do about all this except wait and see what happens.

The global foldable smartphone market grew 10% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2023, reaching 2.1 million units shipped, according to Counterpoint Research. This growth is in stark contrast to the overall smartphone market, which declined 9% year-over-year during the same period.

In particular, Chinese market is driving the growth of the global foldable smartphone market. In the second quarter of 2023, shipments in the Chinese foldable smartphone market surged 64% year-over-year to reach 1.2 million units. With this, China alone represents a 58.6% share of the global foldable smartphone market.

China’s high market share in foldable phones is likely due to the wider range of foldable smartphones available there. Out of 18 foldable smartphones launched globally in the second quarter of 2023, only 11 of them were launched outside of China. This means that there are seven more foldable smartphones for users in China to choose from.

For example, foldable like the Xiaomi Fold 3, Huawei Mate X3, Oppo Find N3, and Vivo X Flip are only available in China. In Q2 2023 alone, China saw five new foldable tailored for its market, while the global market outside China only saw two foldable launches.

However, Chinese manufacturers are now starting to expand their foldable smartphone offerings to global markets, which is expected to boost growth in the coming months. 

Samsung is also expected to play a major role in the growth of the foldable phone market in the second half of 2023 with its latest Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldable smartphones. Counterpoint Research Senior Analyst Jene Park predicts that the era of the mass foldable phone will start in 2024, led by Samsung and Huawei’s entry-level foldables. He says “Entry-level foldables are expected to be priced around $600 to $700, making them more accessible to consumers.”

According to a recent report by Counterpoint Research, the foldable smartphone market share in India’s ultra-premium segment, priced above Rs. 45,000, is expected to grow more than four times to 35% by the end of 2025. Currently, foldables constitute about 8% of ultra-premium Android smartphone shipments as of June 2023.

The research firm highlights that the adoption of foldable smartphones has been relatively slow, accounting for only about 1% of the overall mobile market in India.

Flip/Clamshell smartphones are very popular in India

However, flip smartphones are highly popular in India, especially among financially empowered female users. In the first half of 2023, flip phones accounted for an overwhelming 82% of the total foldable device shipments in the country.

The localization of manufacturing has also played a crucial role in fostering market growth. Flagship devices like Samsung’s Z Fold5 and Flip5, produced in India, have exemplified the trend of localized manufacturing, contributing to the increasing popularity of foldable smartphones in the country.

The entry of more smartphone manufacturers into the foldable phone market is expected to further boost the sector, making it more dynamic and competitive. Research firm Techarc estimates that India is poised to sell 635,000 foldable smartphones this year.

Globally, the shipments of foldable smartphones witnessed an impressive growth rate of about 64% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, with China leading the way at 117%. However, in terms of growth rate, India took the top spot with an astonishing growth rate of 967%, followed by the MEA market with 197%, and North America with 43%.

Samsung, a major player in the foldable market, has ambitious plans for the future. The company aims to have foldable phones constitute over 20% of its total Galaxy smartphone sales globally by 2023. They are planning to sell up to 100 million foldable phones annually worldwide in the coming years, with the goal of having half of its smartphone sales come from foldable models by 2025.

The soaring demand for foldable smartphones in India indicates a significant shift in consumer preferences, with users increasingly opting for innovative and feature-rich devices. Chinese OEMs like Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi are expected to hugely influence the foldable market in China, as per a report. Foldable smartphone sales are expected to rise significantly in the country in 2022 due to new launches and ever-increasing enthusiasm among customers.

According to a report by Counterpoint Research, China’s foldable smartphone market is expected to see remarkable growth in terms of foldable smartphone sales in 2022. The growth in the Chinese foldable market will also contribute to the overall growth of the global foldable market in 2022.

The country’s foldable market witnessed a sales volume of 0.67 million units in Q1 2022 recording a 391% YoY and 152% QoQ growth. As foldable sales were strong in April and May, China’s foldable market is likely to expand 225 percent year on year to 2.7 million devices in shipments, says the report.

The sales figures show that Chinese customers prefer foldable phones from domestic brands. The sales volume for the Chinese foldable market for January-May 2022 reveals that Huawei has been dominating the foldable sales in the country. The company occupies 50% of total sales. It is followed by Samsung with 20%. Whereas OPPO and Xiaomi stand in third and fourth places, respectively.

The report also mentions that the sales volume of book-type foldables in China was comparatively higher than that of the clamshell type until 2021. The sell-through trend from January to May 2022 shows that book-type foldables account for around 77% of the total sales. However, as per the report, this trend is likely to change in 2022.

All in all, the future of foldable smartphones looks pretty bright in China. The country is dominated by domestic vendors and Samsung also holds a significant percentage of total sales. The growth of Chinese vendors will make Apple, which is well settled in China, reconsider its marketing strategy.

Redmi K50G – A gaming smartphone like no other

On February 16, the Redmi K50G went official in China as the first device in the Redmi K50 series. The gaming smartphone is the successor of last year’s Redmi K40 Gaming Edition. It not only comes with a new branding but also updated specs for a starting price of ¥3299 ($521).

The handset is unlike any other gaming smartphone in the market. It features a subtle design instead of being flashy. There’s also a Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team Edition of this phone.

The Redmi K50G offers features like a 6.67-inch 120Hz OLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, liquid cooling system, magnetic shoulder buttons, quad speakers, x-axis linear vibration motor, three WiFi antennas, 64MP + 8MP + 2MP triple camera setup, 20MP selfie camera, 4,700mAh battery, and 120W fast charging.

The handset was also accompanied by Redmi’s first gaming router dubbed as Redmi Router AX5400.

REDMAGIC 7 Series – Gaming smartphones with all bells and whistles

The REDMAGIC 7 series includes two models, namely REDMAGIC 7 and REDMAGIC 7 Pro. The duo was unveiled on February 17. The specs of these phones are nearly identical, except for a few additional features on the Pro.

They come with a 6.8-inch FHD+ 165Hz OLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, liquid cooling system, cooling fan, 4,500mAh battery, and 120W fast charging. On the other hand, the Pro model arrives with a dedicated in-house gaming chipset called Red Core 1, an under-display camera, and up to 135W fast charging.

The REDMAGIC 7 and REDMAGIC 7 Pro start at ¥3,899 ($616) and ¥4,799 ($758) respectively. Apart from regular colors, they also come in a transparent edition.

Nothing teases entry into the smartphone category

Carl Pei’s Nothing may soon enter the smartphone category. Cryptic tweets by the executive and the official Android and Snapdragon handles on February 16 hint at an imminent announcement.

So far, the year-old company has one product in its portfolio in the form of Nothing ear (1), a critically acclaimed pair of truly wireless earphones. Other than a smartphone, it is also being rumored to release a power bank called Nothing power (1).

Probably, the firm may reveal more details at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2022, which is scheduled to kickstart on February 28.

HONOR ranked second in China in Q4 2021

Within a year from being sold by HUAWEI to Zhixin New Information Technology Co. Ltd., HONOR’s smartphone shipments reached the second position in its home market China in Q4 2021.

The brand was only second to Apple with a 16.7% market share as compared to 7.5% a year earlier. Though the iPhone maker had a 21.7% share in the final quarter of last year, it only grew 13% YoY, while HONOR’s growth skyrocketed by a 100% YoY.

The HONOR Magic3 was also the most-shipped premium Android smartphone during this period.

realme 9 Pro series brings flagship camera to mid-range

After teasing for days, the realme 9 Pro series made its debut on February 16 at last. The most interesting of the two phones is definitely the realme 9 Pro+.

 The Pro+ looks like a budget smartphone with a huge chin and a 90Hz AMOLED display. But it comes with a flagship 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera, which gives tough competition to almost every handset in the segment and above.

The device starts at ₹24,999 for the base 6GB + 128GB memory configuration in India. The brand is also expected to release a Free Fire Limited Edition soon. But its availability in India is a mystery as the mobile game was recently banned in the country by the central government.

Chrome OS Flex makes your old PCs and Macs useful

Chrome OS Flex is nothing but an official Google release of Cloudready whose developer Neverware was acquired by the search giant in December 2020.

With Google at the helm, this fork of Chrome OS designed to run on Windows and Mac could get popular once it releases to the public after the early access. The Mountain View-based tech giant claims that the operating system can be installed on devices that are up to 13 years old.

Though it doesn’t offer all the features of the regular Chrome OS at the moment, it is more than enough to make an old laptop or desktop with less powerful hardware useful.

Possible Pixel 7 series appear in Android 13 code

With the release of Android 13 Developer Preview 1, details of the next-generation Pixels have started emerging. According to a report by 9to5Google, the upcoming Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are codenamed Cheetah and Panther respectively.

They will be powered by a new Tensor chip codenamed Cloudripper. Carrying model number GS201, this SoC will likely arrive with an Exynos Modem 5300 with model number g5300b.

Unfortunately, that’s all the information available regarding the successors of Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

Windows 11 users can now use Android apps natively

Microsoft finally brings Android apps support for Windows 11 in the stable channel. Once updated to build 22000.526, users will be able to install a limited number of Android applications from the Amazon App Store.

Unfortunately, the feature is currently limited to the United States. It should be available in more regions in the coming days.

ColorOS hits 500 million users globally

OPPO’s ColorOS has come a long way since its inception. The once hated Android skin by international critics has now become one of the most preferred ones.

At the same time, with the entry of the company into new markets, its shipments are in increasing trend. Hence, it is not surprising to learn that the monthly active users of ColorOS have exceeded 500 million globally.

The number could go even high if OnePlus also switches to ColorOS in international markets.

Motorola Frontier – An upcoming smartphone with a 194MP camera

Motorola is soon expected to release a high-end smartphone codenamed Frontier. Last week, we got to see this phone in a high-quality image in almost all the angles.

The device is rumored to come with a 194MP Samsung S5KHP1 primary camera, a 5MP Samsung SKJN1SQ03 ultra-wide camera, a 12MPl Sony IMX663 telephoto camera, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ SoC, and a 6.7-inch curved OLED display.

Foldable smartphone shipments increased by 264.3% in 2021

Last week, a report by IDC revealed that the shipments of foldable smartphones totaled 7.1 million units in 2021. For comparison, the number was only 1.9 million in 2020.

In other words, the foldable smartphone market grew by a whopping 264.3% YoY. The market research company forecasts the growth to hit a compound annual growth rate(CAGR) of 69.9% by 2025.

Continuing the tradition, Samsung president TM Roh has published a blog post on the website ahead of the Galaxy Unpacked event that talks about the products about to get launched and set expectations.

In that post, Roh has confirmed that the upcoming foldable smartphones from the company will come with S Pen support. This also confirms that the South Korean giant will be launching a new S Pen at the Galaxy Unpacked event next month.

The new upcoming stylus is touted to be the “first-ever S Pen designed specifically for foldable phones.” However, nothing more about the product is known at this time. This is not it, TM Roh has also confirmed that there won’t be a Galaxy Note device getting launched this year, saying that instead of launching a Note-series this time around, the company will “further broaden beloved Note features to more Samsung Galaxy devices.”

He adds that the “third generation of foldable devices will open up amazing new multitasking capabilities and enhanced durability.” Talking about the Galaxy Z Flip 3, he says that the phone will have “an even more refined style, armed with more durable, stronger materials.”

It’s not just the hardware but Samsung is also focusing on software to improve the user experience. Roh says that the company has worked with Google “to enrich our foldable ecosystems with popular apps and services.”

For the upcoming foldable smartphone, Samsung has lined up more partner apps to take advantage of the fold-out format. We can expect support for hands-free video calling with Google Duo, watching videos in “Flex” mode on YouTube, and multitasking in Microsoft Teams, among others.

At the Galaxy Unpacked event on 11th August, Samsung is expected to launch Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Watch 4 series, Galaxy Buds 2, and S Pen. The upcoming foldable phones are expected to be around $200 cheaper than their predecessor as the company is looking to make them more affordable.

DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants) has released its new report on foldable displays for March 2021. According to the report, Samsung and Samsung Display will continue to remain dominant throughout this year, just like 2020. However, unlike the previous year, the shipments will see momentum only in the second half of 2021.

Foldable and Rollable Smartphones Performance Q4 2020

As per DSCC’s latest report, shipments of foldable smartphones grew 54% QoQ and 242% YoY in Q4 2020. Samsung Electronics was the leading brand in the fourth quarter of last year with a whopping 91% market share based on units.

Samsung Electronics led the foldable smartphone market throughout 2020 with an 87% unit market share. The overall market shipped 2.2 million units, which is 1000% more, compared to 2019.

Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy Z Flip was the most-shipped foldable smartphone with a 50% market share, followed by Galaxy Z Fold2. South Korea accounted for more than 50% share of Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Flip 5G worldwide.

Foldable and Rollable Smartphones Forecast 2021

According to Ross Young, the CEO of DSCC, Samsung Electronics has delayed the launch of its next-generation foldable smartphones until Q3 2021. The South Korean tech giant is expected to release at least three foldables. 

The Galaxy Z Fold series could replace the Galaxy Note series as the company’s second flagship series after the Galaxy S series. Additionally, the firm is also expected to launch a more-affordable Galaxy Z Flip clamshell foldable smartphone.

Further, Samsung Display, the sister company of Samsung Electronics will start selling foldable displays with UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) to other brands in H2 2021. A total of at least 12 different foldable and rollable smartphones from 8 brands are expected to release in the market in the second half of this year.

Samsung Electronics is forecasted to lead the foldable and rollable smartphone market with an 81% unit share and a 76% revenue share in 2021. On the other hand, Samsung Display’s unit market share will increase from 83.5% in 2020 to 87% in 2021 since it will be selling displays to other brands in H2 2021.

However, the shipments of the entire foldable smartphone market are expected to surge by only 1% YoY and 40% YoY in Q1 2021 and Q2 2021 respectively. But the shipments should shoot up over 100% in the remaining quarters (Q3, Q4).

More than 5.1 million foldable and rollable smartphones are expected to be shipped this year. More than 3 million of these shipments are said to happen in Q4 2021. In other words, unit shipments could grow up to 128% while revenue may increment up to 137% to $8.6 billion, as compared to 2020.

Foldable smartphones with Galaxy Z Fold-like form factor (book-type) are expected to account for 49% of foldable and rollable smartphone revenues in 2021, up from 39% in 2020. That’s because new entrants in this category, like Google, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi are reported to release phones with the said form factor.

Last but not least, as per Ross Young, the devices from new entrants will feature in-folding displays as small as 7.1-inch and as large as 8.2-inch, in addition to sub-7-inch clamshell foldable phones.

Many smartphone companies were working on foldable smartphones for the past few years but only a couple of them managed to launch their devices commercially, which includes Samsung and Huawei.

With Huawei practically out of the premium smartphone space for the time being because of the trade restrictions, Samsung is at an advantage. Now, the company is planning to offer its foldable display panels to other companies.

Reports indicate that the South Korean giant is planning to provide one million foldable display panels which include both designs — horizontal fold and vertical fold. While the number may not seem much, it is a good place to start with.

The report further adds that multiple China-based smartphone makers have been in talks with Samsung Display to source foldable screen panels. With Samsung reportedly agreeing to it, we could see several new foldable smartphones in the second half of this year, likely from brands like OPPO and Xiaomi.

Samsung already has a few foldable smartphones in the market and is now reportedly working on a third-generation model. By supplying its panels to others, it will be able to put more players in this space, hoping to push adaptation of foldable phones.

Apart from the companies like Xiaomi and OPPO, Apple is also expected to launch a foldable iPhone in the coming years. While several details of the foldable iPhone have leaked online, we are yet to see anything official from the company.

That said, now another Samsung foldable smartphone utility patent has emerged describing the usage of pop-up cameras.

As always, the new utility patent by Samsung Electronics was spotted by LetsGoDigital. The company filed it with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) titled ‘ Foldable electronic device including sliding structure and method for controlling the same’. The patent got approved and published on October 22.

The 79-page documentation for this patent talks about using pop-up cameras in 4 different ways in a foldable smartphone that looks like the Galaxy Z Fold2. We don’t think that the South Korean tech giant will ever adopt this but still it is worth taking a look at.

In the first type, the pop-up module contains sensors for selfies and video calls like on traditional smartphones. Hence, this module resides inside the left-wing of the phone. Whereas, in the remaining three types, the pop-up module sits inside the right-wing.

In the second type, the pop-up module is dedicated to rear cameras so that the back panel of the device can be kept clean. However, in the third type, the pop-module includes microphones and flash for rear cameras as well as the entire suite of front-facing sensors. Lastly, the fourth type houses both the rear and front cameras together.

Having said that, as we mentioned in the beginning, Samsung may never use this utility patent as under-screen cameras are expected to take over in the coming years.

Foldables are said to take over the world of smartphones in the next few years. We can already witness their success, thanks to devices from Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei. The South Korean giant is clearly a market leader in this segment. A new report by Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) also confirms the same providing more insights into this new breed of mobile devices for the year 2020.

The report by DSCC says that Q2 of 2020 is expected to be the record period for foldable panel shipments this year. The firm also forecasts Galaxy Z Flip to the top-selling foldable of the entire 2020, followed by Galaxy Z Fold2, Motorola razr, and Galaxy Z Flip 5G.

Talking about brands, Samsung will account for more than 80% of the market by the end of 2020.  The report adds that this is due to Huawei’s inability to launch the Mate X2, no thanks to the US ban.

Further, clamshell foldable smartphones will cover 60% of the market, again due to the absence of Mate X2 with an in-folding screen. As for display cover, UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) will lead with more than 80% share.

Whereas, Nitto and Colon have a dominate share in foldable polarizers and CPI (Colorless Polyimide) respectively over Sumitomo Chemical. Lastly, Qualcomm has over 95% market with Snapdragon 855+ leading the chart, followed by Snapdragon 865+.

Samsung is the forerunner of foldable smartphones. The company just launched Galaxy Z Fold2 a few hours ago as its third foldable device. Ahead of it, news broke out that Samsung Electronics has partnered with Corning to develop its own foldable glass.

The display, display cover, and hinge are the three main crucial hardware parts of a foldable smartphone. The original Galaxy Fold uses CPI (Colorless Polyimide) as display cover, which is not as durable as UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) used in the other two devices from the company – Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold2.

For those unaware, Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display are two independent companies. The latter supplies OLED panels for almost all the devices manufactured by former except for the upcoming Galaxy M51.

Samsung Display also supplies UTG for Samsung Electronics, which is manufactured by  DOWOO INSYS using glass substrates supplied by SCHOTT AG. Thus, the electronics division of Samsung has to pay a large amount of money for display and display cover supplies.

Back in April, a report by South Korea’s ETNews stated that Samsung Electronics was looking to manufacture UTG on its own to reduce the overall manufacturing cost of its foldables. That report mentioned that UTG used in Galaxy Z Flip costs $40 per unit compared to $2 for flat glass used in normal smartphones.

This is one of the reasons why foldables are expensive. But that could change in the coming years as Samsung Electronics has successfully joined hands with Corning to develop its own UTG as per a report by the same publication. This news comes after the company had patented three different types of screen covers for foldables, out of which, two of them involves UTG.

The new report states that “according to the display industry, Samsung Electronics IT & Mobile Communications Business has recently started receiving necessary glass substrates from Corning”.

That means the company will continue to improve its yield in the coming months so that it could be self-reliant as well as competitive to Samsung Display. This will further lead to competition among other glass manufacturers in the next few years eventually bringing down the cost of foldable smartphones as a whole.

On the other hand, Samsung Display has now begun to focus on diversifying its customers as it cannot rely on Samsung Electronics. In fact, it has already received orders for OLED  panels from Huawei for its foldable smartphones.

Visionox, a China-based display maker has been in the news for quite some time for its innovative technologies. Now, the company has partnered with Huawei for the next-generation of foldable smartphones.

The report, citing people aware of the matter, says that Visionox will now be the screen supplier for the next-generation of foldable smartphones coming from Huawei. Apart from this, both companies also seem to have partnered up for under-display camera technology.

Currently, Huawei is sourcing display panels for the foldable smartphones from Samsung Display. It is said that the Huawei Mate X2 uses panels from Samsung but going forward, it will switch to Visionox, in line with the company’s move to align itself to domestic vendors to reduce its reliance on other companies outside of China.

As per the report, Visionox’s orders for Huawei this year is expected to reach 2.5 billion yuan. The semi-annual report reveals that Visionox achieved an operating income of 1.165 billion yuan in H1 2020, representing an increase of 4.44 percent.

However, the net profit for the company declined significantly to 92 million yuan, which is about 47.30 percent. So, to cover up, the company is now focusing more on newer technologies like foldable displays.

A couple of months ago, Visionox had confirmed that the company’s under-screen camera technology is ready for mass-production and has achieved one of the best display results. It has used transparent OLED panels on devices, resulting in a balanced offering of display quality and photographic performance.

Last year, companies like Samsung and Huawei introduced their first foldable smartphones in the market and now both the companies are gearing up to launch a second-generation of the same pretty soon.

Apart from these two brands, other smartphone makers are also working on their own foldable devices. While companies are working on an innovative design for their smartphones, it seems that technology will remain unchanged for years.

According to the report from market research firm UBI Research, foldable smartphones are expected to keep using the ultra-thin glass (UTG) and colorless polyimide (CPI) at least for the next five years.

It further added that the shipments for the CPI films and UTG will reach 4.5 million units and 3.5 million units, respectively, this year. The firm predicts that both the materials will grow in the next 5 years.

As per the estimated, by the year 2024, CPI films shipment will reach 37.1 million units and UTG 30.5 million units. The research firm said it took into account the outlook for foldable OLED panels and manufacturers’ yield rates.

The report from UBI Research claims that Samsung Display will supply Samsung Electronics with foldable OLED panels with UTG while shipping those with CPI films to Huawei. But, most other vendors will use CPI films but are researching foldable OLED panels that use UTG as well.

In order to lower the price of foldable smartphones, Samsung Electronics is looking to manufacture foldable glass on its own. Until now, the company has been sourcing supplies from its sister company Samsung Display. If this plan goes as expected, the price of foldables may drop gradually making them affordable than ever before.

The current cheapest foldable smartphone by Samsung, the Galaxy Z Flip costs $1,400, which is not affordable in any way and even the company feels the same. The foldable glass used on this device has a thickness of 30 micrometers and costs $40 to make, compared to $2 for flat glass on normal phones.

The foldable glass, known as UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass), used in the Galaxy Z Flip is manufactured by DOWOO INSYS whose biggest shareholder is Samsung Display, who then incorporates its OLED panel with the glass and supplies the final product to Samsung Electronics. But if the phone maker can manufacture its own foldable glass, Samsung Electronics can compete directly with its sister company. This could lead to competition between other folding glass manufacturers over the years, eventually bringing down the cost.

In fact, Samsung Electronics is already in talks with multiple foldable glass manufacturers. However, it is not certain if the company will succeed in signing a deal but if it does, we can expect foldable smartphones to get cheaper in the coming years.

In a recent press conference, the CEO of Huawei‘s customer Business, Yu Chengdong, stated that the cost of flexible displays on foldable smartphones are too expensive at the moment. This means that it is virtually impossible to make a profit.

Huawei had recently launched the Mate Xs, which is the successor to the first foldable smartphone from the company and features various improvements. Both the devices carried a hefty price tag and are generally considered premium grade high end devices that only enthusiasts would buy. With a price tag over 10,000 Yuan (over 1400 US Dollars), one could afford even afford high end desktops or laptops at this range.

During the press conference, Yu Chengdong was asked if the price of the foldable phones be about the same as an ordinary phone in the near future. To this, the senior executive responded saying, “I think we need more than a year, maybe a year and a half or two years.” He even mentioned that the cost of this kind of product is extremely high and that the company is losing money.

According to Yu Chengdong, the cost of making foldable smartphones like the Mate Xs is so high that there is virtually no way to make a profit. However, the reason Huawei is still focusing on expanding the production is due to the fact that its demand is impressively larger than expected, despite the 16,999 Yuan price tag (roughly 2,400 US Dollars).

For those unaware, the Huawei Mate Xs is an upgrade over the original Mate X. It features the new Kirin 990 5G SoC with various improvements to performance and battery life. The new designs also enhance the durability of the device and makes it a better foldable handset overall with an improved hinge mechanism as well.

The much awaited foldable smartphones have finally gone official this year and have also been well-received in terms of sales by the early adopters. However, a new report from Strategy Analytics claim that the acceptance will grow if the prices gets slashed.

The new report from the User Experience Strategies group at Strategy Analytics has found that the perceived value of the foldable form does not outweigh the added cost. The report adds that the idea of having a larger-displayed smartphone in a portable size is perceived as valuable to the vast majority but willingness to pay extra for a foldable device does not align with the desire to purchase one.

It also adds that unless a foldable phone has a wider folded state, entering text when closed is too cumbersome, forcing users to utilize two hands to enter text, when in the opened state. Currently, there are two foldable smartphones in the market — Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X. Both the smartphones are now available for purchase in select countries for a price close to $2,000, which is considerably more than the traditional flagship phones.

We heard it dozens of times: 5G and foldable smartphones have been the main revolutions of 2019 in the mobile sector. A lot of smartphone manufacturers came up with their own form factors experimenting foldable display: this year we saw a lot of crazy foldable designs that will or may hit the shelves in the next future. In this article, we collected all the craziest foldable designs we have seen so far. The article only includes smartphones with flexible displays, so do not be surprised after not finding devices such as the upcoming Microsoft Surface Duo or the Surface Neo which are just devices with dual displays.

Outward folding by Huawei

Among the foldable smartphones in commerce, the most appreciated was the Mate X by Huawei. It has an outward folding design that allows using both the displays generated when the display is closed. The secondary display also allows you to use the quad rear camera for selfies as well, that is one of the main reasons why I appreciate it so much. While unfolded, the foldable smartphone has a diagonal of 8 inches, while the primary display you can see when the smartphone is folded has a 6.6-inch diagonal. The phone has a unique AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ resolution and it is powered by a Kirin 980 chipset paired with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. In 2020 Huawei will release an upgraded version called Mate Xs which will boast a more advanced Kirin 990 chipset that is the same found on the Mate 30 series.

Inward folding by Samsung

The Galaxy Fold by Samsung is the world’s first foldable smartphone released by a mainstream manufacturer. It has a completely different design compared to the Huawei Mate X. The Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with an inward folding design, meaning that the foldable display is placed internally. While the smartphone is folded, the flexible display is totally covered, but the phone features a smaller external display with 4.6-inch size. While unfolded, the smartphone has a 7.3-inch diagonal. It even sports two camera departments: a triple camera on the rear side with a variable focal aperture and a triple camera near the foldable display.

Dual folding by Xiaomi

Xiaomi is working on a foldable smartphone with a double fold design. The company recently showcased it in an official promo video in which you can clearly see a device that can be folded twice with the phone’s display on the outside. According to the company, the MIUI has been adjusted accordingly with gesture controls and other features, and the phone is able to become either a tablet or a traditional smartphone in a very practical way. The phone folds from the two sides of the main smartphone’s screen and it closes in the middle of the rear side of the device. In the video, we can clearly notice a camera icon on the screen, but we can not see any camera on the phone. Instead, there is a power key and a USB Type-C port to charge the battery.

Tri-folding by TCL

TCL showcased a lot of foldable smartphone prototypes this year. But the last one which surprised us is the foldable phone we wrote about yesterday. It sports a tri-folding display with two hinges: the first one folds in while the second one folds out, so it is able to fold in a zig zag manner in order to take less space. When unfolded, the TCL prototype has a total diagonal of 10 inches making it a real tablet-sized device. The phone even sports a quad camera setup on the rear side. Unfortunately, when it is folded, the device is very thick, but it is compact. We still do not know when this device will be announced.

Foldable flip phone by Motorola

Motorola is expected to announce its first foldable smartphone on November 13, at least from what an official teaser video suggests. It will be a revival of the iconic RAZR line-up which made the fortune of the company in the feature phones age. And, just like the original RAZR series, the new foldable smartphone will have a clamshell form factor. But there will obviously be a difference: the display will be foldable just like the phone. Given that it will be a flip phone, probably you already imagined that it will fold vertically. According to rumors, the Motorola RAZR smartphone will sport a 6.2-inch flexible OLED display with a resolution of 876 x 2142 pixels. The phone will also come with an external display which will allow users to check notifications without unfolding the phone. The foldable display should be notched in order to include a front camera for selfies. Despite its foldable design, the Motorola RAZR is not expected to be a flagship: instead, it should be a mid-ranger equipped with a Snapdragon 710 chipset paired with 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of internal storage depending on the chosen configuration.

Foldable laptop by Lenovo

Instead of a smartphone, Lenovo is developing a foldable PC. It is a laptop that folds inwards with a huge 13.3-inch display and, obviously, Microsoft Windows as the operating system. The prototype belongs to the ThinkPad X1 series and Lenovo should launch it in the market in 2020 when it will be completely ready and safe.

World’s first foldable phone by Royole

Last but not least, the world’s first foldable phone. A lot of people expected Samsung to release the first foldable device, but Royole beat the Korean giant and announced the FlexPai before the Korean giant. Just like the Huawei Mate X, the Royole FlexPai is another device with a flexible display placed externally which folds outwards. It is available in the global market and it is powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset. Its display has a 7.8-inch diagonal when unfolded.

The year of 2019 is the year when foldable smartphones actually became a reality. Samsung and Huawei were developing foldable smartphones since the past couple of year and both the companies launched their first foldable smartphone.

However, the devices are a bit on the pricier side. The Samsung Galaxy Fold is expected to be priced around $1,980 while the Huawei Mate X is expected to start at around 2,299 Euros. While Galaxy Fold is scheduled to go on sale later this month, the Mate X will be available for purchase from June.

Because of the pricing, the device isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But according to Zhang Yu, Senior Vice President of BOE, a China-based display panel manufacturer, the pricing of the foldable smartphones could drop to around $1,500 by the year 2021.

The Galaxy Fold has two displays – a 4.6-inch 840 x 1960 screen on the outside and a 7.3-inch 1536 x 2152 flexible display on the inside when unfolded. It is powered by a Snapdragon 855 processor with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

There are two cameras above the flexible display – a 10MP f/2.2 sensor and an 8MP f/1.9 sensor both for selfies. The triple rear cameras are a 12MP telephoto camera with OIS and an f/2.4 aperture paired with a 12MP wide-angle camera with a variable aperture (f/1.5 and f/2.4) which also has OIS. The third sensor is a 16MP ultra-wide angle camera with an f/2.2 aperture.

There is also a 10MP f/2.2 selfie camera above the smaller display when it is folded. The Galaxy Fold packs a 4380mAh battery with support for fast charging. It has a USB type-C port at the bottom, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner but no audio jack.

The Huawei Mate X features a large 8-inch screen with a 2480 x 2200 pixels screen resolution and an 8:7.1 aspect ratio when unfolded with pretty thin bezels. When folded, it transforms into a dual display phone – one side is a 6.6-inch (2480 x 1148 pixels) 19.5:9 display while the other is a 6.38-inch (2480 x 892 pixels) 25:9 display.

The phone is powered by the company’s own Kirin 980 chipset, paired with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It comes with the 7nm Balong 5000 modem which brings 5G support to the device. It features three cameras on the back, which also double as the selfie cameras.

The cameras were co-developed with Leica and are made up of a 40MP wide-angle lens, a 16MP ultra-wide angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens. The phone runs the EMUI 9.1.1 custom interface, which is based on Android 9 Pie operating system out-of-the-box and is powered by a 4,500mAh battery.

Other smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Lenovo, LG, and Motorola, among others are working on launching their own foldable smartphones soon. It will be interesting to see how they price their device.

Last week we reported TCL is developing five foldable devices including one that wraps around the wrist like a large bracelet. It appears TCL already has some prototypes and is demoing them at MWC 2019. A Weibo user at the event took pictures of some of them and shared them on the web yesterday.

The pictures show different versions of TCL’s foldable phones but all of them share some similarities. First, they all fold inwards. They also have multiple cameras. And lastly, they use the same hinge system TCL has dubbed “DragonHinge”.

One of the foldable phones is designed like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. It has two screens – one on the outside and the main flexible one that’s inside. When unfolded, it transforms into a tablet.

TCL says the main display is a 7.2-inch 2K AMOLED panel with a 2048 x 1536 resolution and an ultra-wide color gamut. It also says the device has pretty narrow bezels with a screen-to-body ratio of 90.73%. There are four cameras arranged vertically on the rear of the phone.

The second device has only one display. When folded, it takes the shape of a flip phone. However, it doesn’t fold completely flat. On its back are three cameras.

TCL says the phones run an optimized user interface for multitasking, email, and gaming. There is no info on the rest of the specs but since they are not expected to launch until next year, that is understandable. Hopefully, more details will surface later.

Samsung, Huawei, and Nubia are set to announce foldable devices over the next few days. LG says it is sitting it out for now and Xiaomi has shown off a prototype. A report says China’s TCL is also joining the party with not one but five foldable devices.

TCL is known as the licensee for BlackBerry and Alcatel brands. It owns the Palm brand too but has licensed it to another company which made the Palm phone released back in November. A report by CNET says the company has joined the foldable train and is developing two foldable smartphones, two foldable tablets, and a fifth foldable device that wraps around your wrist like a large bracelet.

According to patents and renderings, one of the tablets folds inwards while another folds outwards. The same applies to the phones too but are said to bend on the horizontal line like a flip phone. The fifth device, which sounds more exciting, can wrap around the wrist. CNET says a TCL executive told them back at CES 2019 that their first foldable phone will launch in 2020.

Don’t get too excited. There is a possibility that the design of these devices might change or any one of them might be scrapped and not see the light of day. Nevertheless, it is nice to see more players are interested in making foldable devices even though they might not become mainstream for a few more years.

A few months ago, Lenovo showed off a concept tablet and phone with flexible displays at their Lenovo Tech World event which was held in San Francisco. It seems the device is going out of concept and will see an official launch following a new video release.

The video which is released ahead of the IFA Berlin 2016 conference is based on the theme “Different For the Sake of Better”. The video shows a couple of devices such as what appears to be a new Lenovo Yoga, a new type of keyboard, and most importantly, a phone with a flexible display and a foldable tablet.

Samsung and LG are two other big names in the flexible phones race. Samsung says they plan on bringing flexible phones to the market come 2017 with a possibility of showing up early next year during Mobile World Congress.

LG on the other hand already has 2 bendable phones: the G Flex and G Flex 2, but still doesn’t plan to get outdone by its Korean brother. So they are also preparing to launch phones with foldable displays next year.

If Lenovo does launch their flexible phone this year, they’ll officially be the first company to do so. The thing about flexible phones isn’t the display itself but other components which are not easily bendable such as the battery.

We know OPPO has been doing well when it comes to the sales of its smartphones. The company’s monthly production of the OPPO R9 is close to an impressive 2 million and it has already overtaken Xiaomi in terms of the sales in the first quarter of 2015. Now, the company’s top secret project has been leaked and its a working foldable smartphone.

We have heard about foldable smartphone from Samsung, but this is the first time we are seeing one from the Chinese company, OPPO. The leak gives us a good look at the device through clear pictures as well as a video. But it is said that the OPPO’s foldable smartphone is still in the prototype stage, and the actual market release of the device has not been finalised yet.

The new foldable smartphone was reportedly in development since August 2015 from OPPO, and the first prototype was completed in February 2016. Now, this version that we see in the images and video runs on Android and even supports the company’s VOOC flash charging technology. We know VOOC is fast and it is said that this foldable smartphone charged from 3% to 57% in a matter of just 5 minutes!

So, foldable smartphones may not be too far away from launch. If OPPO has a working prototype with Android and VOOC on board, we can expect a retail version, maybe in 2017? Of course, OPPO won’t be confirming any of these information but since this prototype has surfaced, it is safe to assume that we can expect a lot more information about the device in the coming months.
