<p>The company first introduced the Laptop 16 in 2023 as a 16-inch modular, high-performance system designed around repairability and upgradeability. One of its core promises was generational graphics upgrades, something many competitors have abandoned. Two years later, Framework has delivered on that commitment. The new NVIDIA-powered Graphics Module is fully backwards compatible, meaning existing Laptop 16 owners can install it to access next-generation performance.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="747" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/aK2_9WGNHVfTOVBr_TulipPre-orderL-1024x747.jpg?x10805" alt="Framework Laptop 16" class="wp-image-704513" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/aK2_9WGNHVfTOVBr_TulipPre-orderL-1024x747.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/aK2_9WGNHVfTOVBr_TulipPre-orderL-300x219.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/aK2_9WGNHVfTOVBr_TulipPre-orderL-768x560.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/aK2_9WGNHVfTOVBr_TulipPre-orderL-696x508.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/aK2_9WGNHVfTOVBr_TulipPre-orderL-1068x779.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/aK2_9WGNHVfTOVBr_TulipPre-orderL-576x420.jpg 576w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/aK2_9WGNHVfTOVBr_TulipPre-orderL-324x235.jpg 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/aK2_9WGNHVfTOVBr_TulipPre-orderL.jpg 1280w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>The GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU is based on NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture, with 8GB of GDDR7 memory. Framework claims a 30–40% jump in gaming performance over the Radeon RX 7700S module. Additional improvements include support for display output and power input through the rear USB-C port, a new thermal system with Honeywell phase change material, and a re-engineered fan design for quieter cooling at 100W sustained TGP. The GPU connects directly to the laptop’s display via a mux, and the 165Hz 2560&#215;1600 panel now supports NVIDIA G-SYNC.</p>

<p>For processors, customers can choose between the 8-core Ryzen AI 7 350 and the 12-core Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, both running at 45W sustained TDP. Integrated graphics remain capable enough to power the system when using the Expansion Bay Shell without a GPU module. Memory and storage remain fully upgradeable, with support for up to 96GB DDR5-5600 RAM and 10TB of storage across two M.2 slots.</p>

<p>To power these upgrades, Framework is introducing a new 240W USB-C adapter with USB-PD 3.1 support. Other refinements include the 2nd Gen webcam, a stiffer CNC aluminum top cover, updated keyboard firmware to prevent accidental wake, and new keyboard designs tailored for both Linux and Windows users.</p>

<p>The original Laptop 16 remains available, now starting at $1,299. Both the refreshed and original models are offered pre-configured with Windows 11 or as DIY editions with user-supplied memory, storage, and OS.</p>

<p>Framework, the company renowned for its modular laptops, continues to expand its product range. Most recently, they introduced the 16-inch modular gaming model called the Framework Laptop 16. Now, the company is presenting another significant update. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/framework/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Framework</a> is finally introducing <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/amd/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AMD</a> mainboards for its 13-inch laptop. This means if you already own a Framework 13 laptop, you can upgrade to an AMD. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>Ryzen comes to Framework 13-inch laptops with AMD Mainboards</strong></h2>

<p>Technology is advancing at a rapid pace. As a result, we&#8217;re constantly introduced to new products like computers, phones, and headphones. Moreover, many of us buy these even when we don&#8217;t need them. For example, even though I use a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/MacBook/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MacBook</a> with an M1 chip, I want to buy the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/MacBook-Air/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">M2 MacBook Air</a>, despite not really needing it. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="538" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/framework-13-inch-amd-laptop-mainboards-1024x538.jpg?x10805" alt="Mainboard Kit (AMD Ryzen&#x2122; 7040 Series)
" class="wp-image-572430" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/framework-13-inch-amd-laptop-mainboards-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/framework-13-inch-amd-laptop-mainboards-300x158.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/framework-13-inch-amd-laptop-mainboards-768x403.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/framework-13-inch-amd-laptop-mainboards-1536x806.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/framework-13-inch-amd-laptop-mainboards-696x365.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/framework-13-inch-amd-laptop-mainboards-1068x561.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/framework-13-inch-amd-laptop-mainboards-800x420.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/framework-13-inch-amd-laptop-mainboards.jpg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Unfortunately, such purchases can contribute to electronic waste if our existing devices aren&#8217;t resold or recycled. Framework, however, is aiming to address this problem by developing modular products, allowing you to enhance the performance of your existing computer. In line with this, the company recently introduced <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/amd/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AMD</a> mainboards for their 13-inch <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/laptops/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">laptops</a>.</p>

<p>If you already have a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/framework/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Framework</a> 13 laptop, you can finally upgrade to an AMD mainboard. However, it&#8217;s important to note that you will need to purchase new RAM and a new WiFi module. The Framework&#8217;s new AMD mainboards come in three configurations:</p>

<ul><li>Base: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Ryzen-5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ryzen 5</a> 7640U with Radeon 760M iGPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD</li><li>Performance: Ryzen 7 7840U with Radeon 7840U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD</li><li>Ultra: Ryzen 7 7840U with Radeon 7840U, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD</li></ul>

<p>The only difference between the base and performance models is the CPU and RAM. The ultra model has the same CPU and RAM as the performance model, but it also has a larger SSD. The AMD mainboards offer a number of advantages over the Intel mainboards. First, they offer better performance, especially in multi-thread. Second, they have better integrated graphics, which means that you can play some games without having to rely on a dedicated GPU.</p>

<p>However, there are also a few disadvantages to the AMD mainboards. First, they are more expensive than the Intel mainboards. Second, the front two USB-C ports do not support Thunderbolt 4. Therefore, if you&#8217;re a user of a 13-inch Framework laptop and are considering switching to AMD, you need to think carefully and decide which option is right for you.</p>

<h3><strong>Price &amp; Availability</strong></h3>

<p>The Framework 13 laptop with an AMD mainboard is available to order now on the Framework website. The base model starts at $1,049, the performance model starts at $1,469, and the ultra model starts at $1,669. The first seven production batches of the Framework 13 laptop with an AMD mainboard are already sold out, but Framework says that it is working to produce more units. The company expects to ship the first orders in late October. Unfortunately, judging by the price, we can say that protecting the environment and using a modular laptop is not cheap at all for 2023.</p>

<p>Modular <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/technology">technology</a> always has the edge over non-modular tech, because the possibilities expand, and so do the consumer options. To tap into the modular laptop market, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/framework">Framework</a>&#8216;s highly anticipated Laptop 16 is now available for preorders in several countries, including the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/united-states">US</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/canada">Canada</a>, Germany, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/france">France</a>, UK, Netherlands, Austria, Ireland, and Australia. This unique gaming notebook is not your typical run-of-the-mill laptop found at local electronics stores; instead, it stands out with its innovative modular design, giving users the power to customize and upgrade their machines over time without the need to invest in an entirely new system.</p>

<h3>The Laptop has a 16-inch 165Hz display and offers 500 nits of brightness</h3>

<p>At its core, the Framework Laptop 16 offers two enticing starting points for consumers. The DIY system, starting at $1,399, allows tech enthusiasts to build their dream machine, sans the operating system, featuring either the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/amd">AMD</a> <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/ryzen-7">Ryzen 7</a> 7840HS or the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS processor. Those who prefer a more plug-and-play experience can opt for the pre-built variants, starting at $1,799, which come with the option of Radeon RX 7700S discrete graphics.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="707" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/aqtmmf9e7xeuditwr1ea8jgq96vh-e1689729543785-1024x707.jpg?x10805" alt="Framework Laptop" class="wp-image-552167" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/aqtmmf9e7xeuditwr1ea8jgq96vh-e1689729543785-1024x707.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/aqtmmf9e7xeuditwr1ea8jgq96vh-e1689729543785-300x207.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/aqtmmf9e7xeuditwr1ea8jgq96vh-e1689729543785-768x530.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/aqtmmf9e7xeuditwr1ea8jgq96vh-e1689729543785-218x150.jpg 218w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/aqtmmf9e7xeuditwr1ea8jgq96vh-e1689729543785-696x481.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/aqtmmf9e7xeuditwr1ea8jgq96vh-e1689729543785-608x420.jpg 608w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/aqtmmf9e7xeuditwr1ea8jgq96vh-e1689729543785-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/aqtmmf9e7xeuditwr1ea8jgq96vh-e1689729543785.jpg 1054w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>One of the laptop&#8217;s standout features is its user-reconfigurable top deck, including the keyboard and numpad, enabling users to tailor the laptop to their unique preferences and workflow. This emphasis on modularity is what sets the Framework Laptop 16 apart from the competition, building upon the success of the previously released Laptop 13 in 2021.</p>

<p>Gamers will delight in the laptop&#8217;s 16-inch 2560 x 1600 display with a 165Hz refresh rate, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/freesync">FreeSync</a> technology, 500 nits brightness, and impressive 1500:1 contrast ratio, supporting 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut. For avid gamers, Framework offers a limited supply of pre-orders that include an eligible <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/amd-radeon">AMD Radeon</a> GPU with a free download code for the highly anticipated Starfield: Premium Edition, making the deal even more enticing.</p>

<p>Framework understands the importance of lasting performance, equipping the Laptop 16 with an 85Wh battery that retains 80 percent capacity even after 1,000 charging cycles. Furthermore, the laptop supports WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, has a 1080p webcam with dual mics and hardware privacy switches, and includes a fingerprint reader compatible with both <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/windows">Windows</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/linux">Linux</a> systems. The company&#8217;s batch ordering system is set to start shipping the first round of Laptop 16s in Q4 2023, providing consumers with a chance to get their hands on this game-changing device. </p>

<p>There are very few fully upgradable gaming laptops in the market as of now that allow users to upgrade certain components (and preferably all of them), such as the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/RAM">RAM</a>, storage, and graphics card, to improve performance and extend the lifespan of the device. This is a convenient and ideal standard for many gamers out there who want to stay up-to-date with the latest games and technology without having to purchase a new laptop every few years. However, not all laptops are easily upgradeable, and some may require specific parts or technical expertise to perform upgrades. Framework&#8217;s latest <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/gaming-laptops">gaming laptop</a>, however, is one of the very few modular gaming laptops that combines portable computing with long-term upgradability. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/45eba4d0-c96e-11ed-8fdf-b6a3cd5bcaad-1024x683.webp?x10805" alt="Framework gaming laptop" class="wp-image-524875" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/45eba4d0-c96e-11ed-8fdf-b6a3cd5bcaad-1024x683.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/45eba4d0-c96e-11ed-8fdf-b6a3cd5bcaad-300x200.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/45eba4d0-c96e-11ed-8fdf-b6a3cd5bcaad-768x512.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/45eba4d0-c96e-11ed-8fdf-b6a3cd5bcaad-1536x1024.webp 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/45eba4d0-c96e-11ed-8fdf-b6a3cd5bcaad-696x464.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/45eba4d0-c96e-11ed-8fdf-b6a3cd5bcaad-1068x712.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/45eba4d0-c96e-11ed-8fdf-b6a3cd5bcaad-630x420.webp 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/45eba4d0-c96e-11ed-8fdf-b6a3cd5bcaad.webp 1750w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Framework has entered the competitive world of gaming laptops with its new device, Framework Laptop 16, which promises to be entirely modular and fully repairable, something its predecessors have failed to achieve. Founder Nirav Patel believes his company is “delivering on the holy grail in high-performance notebooks, which is the ability to upgrade the GPU independently of the rest of the system.” The machine’s aesthetics is a combination of customization and an intentional choice to be loud and proud about its modular nature, which some might describe as &#8216;legopunk&#8217;. </p>

<p>The Framework 16’s specs are yet to be announced, but the company has released open-source data on <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/github">GitHub</a> to attract developers and hobbyists, who will have the ability to customize and tweak the machines. Patel acknowledges that many companies have attempted to make gaming laptops with the promise of upgradeable future roadmaps but have failed, admitting that “it’s been tried in the past, it’s failed horribly.” </p>

<p>The Framework 16 is built with an expansion bay system, with room in the chassis to support both current and future-generation <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/GPU">GPU</a> modules, which will ensure that the machine grows or shrinks according to requirements. The expansion card bay isn’t just designed for an annual addition of new GPUs, but instead will be offered up for a variety of purposes, including enabling Framework’s developer community to build their own modules, such as a video capture card, streaming hardware, dedicated <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/AI">AI</a> modules or even a software-defined radio transmitter. The Framework 16 also offers a hot-swappable keyboard, mousepad, and anything else to enhance customization.</p>
