Samsung looks ready to expand its budget A-series again. Following the success of the Galaxy A16 5G, which was the best-selling Android phone worldwide last quarter, a 4G-only version of the Galaxy A17 has now surfaced. A retailer listing out of Kenya gives us an early look at the phone’s price, specs, and design, and it seems like Samsung is doubling down on value for money rather than headline-grabbing features.

The listing, spotted on Gadgets Leo, shows the Galaxy A17 4G with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage at KSH 22,400—roughly $173. That makes it the cheaper companion to the A17 5G while keeping the core experience intact.

The design is familiar: a slim body with a slightly thinner chin than last year’s model and a pill-shaped camera island on the back. The triple camera setup is led by a 50MP main sensor, joined by a 5MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro. A 13MP selfie camera sits in a punch-hole cutout at the front.

Inside, Samsung is sticking with the MediaTek Helio G99 of the predecessor. It’s a chip that dates back to 2022, so it won’t wow with speed, but it should handle basic apps like WhatsApp and YouTube without much trouble. The real standout is the 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, which offers Full HD+ resolution and a smooth 90Hz refresh rate—features that are still uncommon in this price bracket. Battery life should also be solid, thanks to a 5,000mAh unit with 25W charging.

The most eye-catching detail, though, is Samsung’s promise of six Android version upgrades and six years of security updates. That’s rare even among mid-range phones, let alone in the entry-level space.

If accurate, the Galaxy A17 4G could be one of the best-balanced budget phones of the year—combining an AMOLED display, solid cameras, and unmatched software support for under $180.

The official looking renders were shared in the latest AndroidHeadlines report. Samsung’s new Galaxy A17 will likely be positioned as the brand’s most affordable smartphone that targets the budget segment. Despite being positioned in the budget segment, the A17 features a sleek and minimalist aesthetic with flat edges, a subtle camera layout, and a modern build that echoes Samsung’s more expensive models.

Meanwhile, the front appears to sport a water drop styled notch for the selfie camera and visible bezels on all four sides (especially the chin). Based on what we know so far, Samsung is working on two versions of the Galaxy A17, which include a 4G and 5G variant. Back in May 2025, the Galaxy A17 4G surfaced on the GeekBench platform carrying the MediaTek Helio G99 SoC, 4GB of RAM, and Android 15.

A previous sighting of the Galaxy A17 5G listed it with the Exynos 1330 SoC and 8GB of RAM, however, the latest report claims that Samsung is bumping the processor to a more powerful Exynos 1380 chipset. It adds that the rear will features a 50MP triple camera setup (5MP ultra wide + 2MP macro), while the front sports a 6.7-inch AMOLED display. A sizeable 5,000mAh battery pack is expected to power this budget phone, with support for 25W wired fast charging. Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy A17 4G has surfaced on Geekbench, revealing its chipsets: the MediaTek Helio G99.

Samsung is prepping two budget-friendly phones for late 2025, with details emerging from Geekbench and Bluetooth SIG databases. The Galaxy A17 4G, model SM-A175F, uses the MediaTek Helio G99 — a two-year-old 6 nm-based chip with two 2GHz Cortex-A76 cores and six 2GHz Cortex-A55 cores, paired with a Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. It’s the same chip found in the Galaxy A16 and A15, and according to the Geekbench listing, it’s returning for the A17 as well. The scores? Slightly lower than it’s predecessors.

While it’s easy to justify the lower scores—given that the phone is still in development and has months of optimization ahead—that alone might not be enough to deliver a noticeable performance boost. Another surprise lies in the OS version: the Galaxy A17 (4G) is being tested on Android 15 (One UI 7.0) while One UI 8 will debut in June or July with the 7th gen foldables, months before the Galaxy A17’s release.

A 5G variant, likely powered by an Exynos or MediaTek Dimensity chip, is also expected. For context, both 4G and 5G versions of the A16 launched in October last year.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy M36 5G, model SM-M366B/DS, nears launch, with a support page on Samsung UAE’s site and an Exynos 1380 chip (5nm, Mali-G68 MP5 GPU), 6GB RAM, and Android 15. Likely a rebranded Galaxy A36, which uses a snappier 4nm Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, the M36 may share its 50MP main camera, 5,000mAh battery, and 25W charging. The Exynos 1380’s 5.5 lakh AnTuTu score trails the A36’s, but it’s still okay for basic day-to-day tasks.

Will the A17 4G’s dated chip hold it back, or can a creative marketing win out? Only time will tell.
