Samsung has today announced a new smartphone in the South Korean market — Samsung Galaxy A9 Pro (2019). This is the same smartphone that was launched as Galaxy A8s in China last month.

The phone comes in three color options — Blue, Gray, and Green and is priced at 599,500 Korean Won, which roughly converts to $533. The device will go on sale in Korea from 28th February.

As for the specifications, most of the phone’s specs are same as the Galaxy A8s. It features a 6.4-inch display with 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. There’s an Infinity-O punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 10nm octa-core upper mid-range processor, paired with either 6GB or 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.

For photography, the device is equipped with three cameras on its back — a 10MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, a 24MP f/1.7 main sensor, and a 5MP f/2.2 sensor for real-time portrait effect. It also features a 24MP front-facing snapper for taking selfies.

The Samsung Galaxy A8s comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for added security. There’s also a dedicated Bixby button on the side. The device runs Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own custom interface and is powered by a 3,300mAh battery.

Last month, Samsung launched its Galaxy A8s smartphone in China — the company’s first device to feature a punch-hole or Infinity-O display, as the company likes to call it. Now, the company is working to launch another variant of the phone dubbed as Samsung Galaxy A8s FE.

According to the reports, the Galaxy A8s FE will be launched in China on 14th February and the phone will come it two different finish having gradient colors to attract more female buyers given that the ‘FE’ in the phone’s name stands for ‘Female Edition.’

Looking at the leaked images of this upcoming smartphone, it seems that one model will come with a gradient of yellow and pink while the other model will gradient of light-blue and light-pink. The phone will first debut in China and will later make its way to South Korea. There’s no information available if the phone will be made available to other regions.

It’s not yet known if the Galaxy A8s FE will have the same specifications as the Galaxy A8s but the phone’s design is pretty much the same. To remind you, the Galaxy A8s boasts a 6.4-inch display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

Samsung is reportedly working on many as nine Galaxy A series smartphones ranging from Galaxy A10 to Galaxy A90. Hence, there is a possibility that the Galaxy A60 will also come equipped with Infinity-O display like the Galaxy A8s. As of this writing, there is no information on the specifications of the Galaxy A60.

Another Chinese tipster had recently claimed that the Galaxy A series is being built independently by the Samsung China team and it is mainly aimed towards the Chinese market. He added that the upcoming Galaxy A90 will be the most advanced Galaxy A series smartphone.

The upcoming Galaxy A90, Galaxy A70 and Galaxy 50 are expected to arrive with in-display fingerprint scanner. However, Samsung will be using optical type of in-screen fingerprint readers on the upcoming Galaxy A phones while the more accurate ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor is reserved for the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus that are scheduled to go official on Feb. 20. The other upcoming phones from the Galaxy A series will have some other attractive features such as triple or dual rear camera or ToF (Time of Flight) cameras.

The Galaxy A8s will also sell for a lesser price than originally reported. Instead of the ¥2999 (~$437) price tag, the phone will sell for ¥2799 (~$408). It will be available for purchase on JD.com and those who pre-order before January 1 will receive a bunch of gifts, though you will be required to pay a deposit of about ¥200 (~$29).

The Galaxy A8s is the first Samsung phone with an Infinity-O display. It is a 6.4-inch panel with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2340 x 1080. The phone also packs some impressive processing power. Rather than a mid-range Exynos chipset, the Galaxy A8s is powered by the upper mid-range Snapdragon 710 mobile platform paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Samsung has also been generous with the cameras. There are three on the back and the fourth one is in front. The triple camera setup is a 10MP telephoto lens with 2X optical zoom, a 24MP f/1.7 primary camera, and a 5MP f/2.2 depth sensor. The selfie camera is a 24MP sensor.

The Samsung Galaxy A8s is listed in three color option such as Elf Blue, Aurora Black and Allen Silver on JD.com. The 2,299 Yuan price tag belongs to the base variant that has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The pricing of the higher model featuring 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage is not available yet.

The Galaxy A8s features a 6.4-inch IPS LCD screen. The Infinity-O display design on the smartphone allows the smartphone to deliver a high screen-to-body ratio since it features a small hole for the 24-megapixel front-facing camera at the top-left corner.

Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy A8s at an event today in China. The phone is the first in the world with a hole in its screen and it is also the first Samsung phone with the new Infinity-O display. The screen isn’t the only impressive feature of the phone as Samsung also includes a powerful processor, triple rear cameras and sufficient storage and RAM. Sadly, this is also the first Galaxy phone without an earphone jack.

Design

The Galaxy A8s is covered in glass on both sides with a metal frame. The phone comes in three color variants – Gradient Black, Elves Blue, and Aurora Green (we are particularly fond of the green variant). The glass on the back is 3D and according to Samsung, the color of the phone should change based on the angle light hits it.

Samsung also did something cool with each variant. There is a colored ring around the middle camera (primary sensor) which adds a nice touch to the phone. On the gray variant, the ring is gold but takes on the color of the phone for the blue and green variants.

The hole for the camera in the Infinity-O display is pretty big and not as tiny as the one we saw in the leaked Lenovo Z5s video. There is still a bit of bezel visible around the device and it is even thicker at the chin.

There are antenna lines at the top and bottom of the phone. The bottom is also home to a USB-C port and a single speaker grille. The Bixby button and SIM tray are on the left while the volume rocker and power button sit on the right.

Galaxy A8s Specs

The Galaxy A8s has a 6.4-inch display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Samsung didn’t reveal the screen resolution but we know it is 2340 x 1080 according to its TENAA listing. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 710 – an upper mid-range processor – and paired with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. Irrespective of the RAM variant, you get 128GB of storage.

Like the Galaxy A7 (2018), the Galaxy A8s also has three cameras on its back. One is a 10MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and it is paired with a 24MP f/1.7 main sensor and a 5MP f/2.2 sensor for real-time portrait effect. The selfie camera is a 24MP sensor.

The Galaxy A8s also has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, a 3,300mAh battery, and runs Android 8.1 Oreo.

Price and availability

Samsung didn’t announce a price for the phone but it has opened a registration page for those interested in purchasing it when it goes on sale. Samsung is also running a sweepstake where one lucky winner gets to win the phone. Twenty other winners will get a JBL SD-18 portable Bluetooth speaker while a lot more will get coupons that can be used towards the purchase of accessories and other items. The Samsung Galaxy A8s will be announced on Monday at an event in China. Ahead of the release, the phone’s full specifications have been revealed by China’s communication agency, TENAA, along with some photos.

The Galaxy A8s will come with a 6.39-inch 2340 x 1080 display. Unlike other phones in the A-series, this is not a Super AMOLED display but an LCD panel. However, it is the first phone to come with Samsung’s Infinity-O Display.

The phone will be powered by an octa-core processor with four cores clocked at 2.2GHz and the other four clocked at 1.7GHz. The chipset is said to be the Snapdragon 710 which powers phones like the Mi 8 SE and the Nokia 8.1/X7. The processor is paired with 6GB/ 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage irrespective of the RAM variant you purchase.

On the back of the Galaxy A8s are triple rear cameras just like the Galaxy A7 (2018). The camera arrangement is quite different too. The three cameras – 24MP + 5MP + 10MP – share a single housing and there is an LED flash below the setup. However, the middle camera has a yellow ring around it that seems to be another LED flash but we are not sure. About a centimeter to the left of the cameras is a fingerprint scanner and in front of the phone, nestled within the hole in the screen is a 24MP camera for selfies and video calls.

The Galaxy A8s will run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box according to TENAA and pack a 3,300mAh battery. It will come in black but the images provided are of a silver-dark blue gradient variant. The back appears to be metal but it’s most probably glass. The phone weight is given as 173 grams and its dimensions are 158.4 x 74.9 x 7.4 mm.

Earlier today, Huawei announced the Nova 4 which also has a hole in its display will launch on December 17. Now Samsung’s poster for the Galaxy A8s has surfaced and it shows the phone will be coming a week earlier.

The Galaxy A8s was first teased a few months ago at the launch of the Galaxy A9s and Galaxy A6s in China. Now, it finally has a release date and that day is December 10. The poster revealing the launch date was posted on the official Weibo account of Samsung mobile.

The Galaxy A8s will have its hole at the top left corner. The hole will be home to the front-facing camera. The poster has the text “Real Galaxy” written on the phone of the screen but there is also a Chinese text at the bottom that translates into “insight into the future”. This is probably a confirmation that the design (Infinity O display) will show up in future devices (read Galaxy S10 series).

The Galaxy A8s was shown to have practically no bezels in the teaser image released by Samsung. However, Ice Universe – a popular leaker known for Samsung-related leaks – revealed the phone will have a hole in its display for the front-facing camera.

Fast forward to a few weeks later, and Samsung announces a bunch of new displays that will be used in its future phones, one of them being the Infinity O display which has a hole instead of a notch.

Now, an alleged photo said to be of the Galaxy A8s’ screen protector has surfaced online and it also has a hole, further confirming that the Galaxy A8s will come with an Infinity O display.

The hole is shown to be at the top left corner of the phone. The bezels are pretty thin with the chin being a little thicker than the rest. If you look closely you should see the small gap at the top reserved for the speaker.

The Galaxy A8s will likely be the first Samsung phone to launch with an Infinity O display as there is a high chance it will be announced before the Galaxy S10 series which will also have the same type of display.

At the event in China where it unveiled the Galaxy A9s and the Galaxy A6s today, Samsung teased a brand new phone called the Galaxy A8s. However, it was tight-lipped about the phone’s feature save for a picture which shows the phone with a completely bezel-less display.

Samsung says the Galaxy A8s will be the first to feature a new technology. That new technology is most likely a new display design with practically no bezel. So if it doesn’t have a bezel, where are the sensors and front-facing camera?

According to Ice Universe, the Galaxy A8s will have a hole in its display for the front-facing camera and sensors. It will be quite small, much smaller than the water-drop notch and will be surrounded by the rest of the screen. In a tweet he posted last week, Ice Universe said the design will gain mainstream adoption next year.

The Samsung Galaxy A8s doesn’t have a release date yet and there is still a lot we do not know. However, there is a chance it will launch before next year or at least before the Galaxy S10 series.
