<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>’s upcoming tri-fold is making headlines lately, and for good reason. The company’s first triple-display foldable seems closer than ever to launch, and it has recently been revealed to carry the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/17/samsungs-tri-fold-wont-be-called-galaxy-g-fold-trademark-hints-at-a-different-name/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">name Galaxy Z TriFold</a>. Now, a new beta version of Samsung’s One UI 8 software may have just confirmed what’s powering it.</p>

<p>According to a report from<em> <a href="https://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-z-trifold-chip-3578603/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Android Authority</a></em>, a code string found in the latest One UI 8 beta includes a snippet “siop_q7mq_sm8750.” The “q7mq” part is believed to reference the Z TriFold itself, while SM8750 is the model number for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite.</p>

<h2><strong>We are not surprised</strong></h2>

<p>That lines up with expectations. Samsung already uses the same flagship chip in its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galaxy Z Fold 7</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-7/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flip 7</a>, so it’s no surprise the tri-fold would follow suit. But it’s still a solid confirmation that Samsung isn’t holding back on performance for its most ambitious foldable yet.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Fold-7-2-1024x683.png?x10805" alt="Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7" class="wp-image-697081" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Fold-7-2-1024x683.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Fold-7-2-300x200.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Fold-7-2-768x512.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Fold-7-2-696x464.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Fold-7-2-1068x712.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Fold-7-2-630x420.png 630w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Fold-7-2.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>If true, the Snapdragon 8 Elite could give the Z TriFold a major edge over<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xt-ultimate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Huawei’s Mate XT</a> in terms of performance. It is powered by a 7nm Kirin 9010 chip, which operates at a maximum frequency of just 2.3GHz. By comparison, Qualcomm’s latest flagship reaches up to 4.47GHz on its prime core. It’s not even close.</p>

<p>Huawei is reportedly prepping a second-gen tri-fold for late 2025, likely powered by the Kirin 9020. But with a max clock speed of just 2.5GHz, even the updated chip may struggle to keep up with Qualcomm’s silicon.</p>

<p>Of course, hardware is only half the story. A seamless tri-fold experience will require software that knows how to make use of three screens, not just stretch apps across them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Huawei has made strides on that front with its in-house HarmonyOS Next system. Now it’ll be interesting to see how Samsung plans to take advantage of the three displays on the Z TriFold.</p>

<p>First teased at the January 2025 Galaxy Unpacked event, the tri-fold device is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/10/samsungs-galaxy-ai-is-coming-to-400-million-devices-by-end-of-2025-including-wearables-xr-and-the-tri-fold/">confirmed</a> to hit the market by December this year. While Samsung unveiled the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7/">Galaxy Z Fold7</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-7/">Z Flip7</a> earlier this month, the tri-fold phone was noticeably absent. However, a trademark for “Galaxy Z TriFold”, filed in South Korea and spotted by GalaxyClub, has sparked fresh speculation about its branding.</p>

<p>Internally codenamed Q7M, the device is said to feature a 10-inch inner display when fully unfolded and a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/02/13/samsungs-tri-fold-and-galaxy-z-fold-7-cover-screen-size-leaks/">6.49-inch cover screen</a> — powered by Qualcomm&#8217;s Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Its launch is expected to be limited initially to South Korea and China.</p>

<p>That said, the name itself remains up for debate. Both GalaxyClub and SamMobile have pointed out that “Galaxy Z TriFold” doesn’t quite have the ring of a flagship device name — raising the possibility that it could refer to a series rather than a specific model. Earlier reports had hinted at “Galaxy G Fold”, a nod to the “Flex G” prototype Samsung <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/03/05/all-of-samsungs-foldable-concept-devices-showcased-at-mwc-2025/">showcased at MWC 2025</a>. Yet with the new filing leaning toward the Z series, Samsung may simply be covering its bases by securing multiple trademarks — a common strategy for tech giants.</p>

<p>If Samsung sticks to its plan, the tri-fold will debut later this year, entering a market that currently only sees competition from Huawei’s Mate XT. Whether it will redefine foldables or serve a niche audience remains to be seen.</p>

At its Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9, the company announced plans to bring Galaxy AI to 400 million devices by the end of the year—double the number from 2024. The goal? A more intelligent, seamless experience across phones, tablets, wearables, foldables, and even XR headsets.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="584" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Samsung-Galaxy-S24-Ultra-with-the-Gemini-Live-AI-w810h462-1024x584.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-682383" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Samsung-Galaxy-S24-Ultra-with-the-Gemini-Live-AI-w810h462-1024x584.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Samsung-Galaxy-S24-Ultra-with-the-Gemini-Live-AI-w810h462-300x171.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Samsung-Galaxy-S24-Ultra-with-the-Gemini-Live-AI-w810h462-768x438.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Samsung-Galaxy-S24-Ultra-with-the-Gemini-Live-AI-w810h462-696x397.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Samsung-Galaxy-S24-Ultra-with-the-Gemini-Live-AI-w810h462-1068x609.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Samsung-Galaxy-S24-Ultra-with-the-Gemini-Live-AI-w810h462-736x420.jpg 736w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Samsung-Galaxy-S24-Ultra-with-the-Gemini-Live-AI-w810h462.jpg 1227w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Speaking at a press conference after the event, Samsung MX President TM Roh confirmed the expanded rollout, citing strong adoption of Galaxy AI since its debut on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s24/">Galaxy S24</a> series in January 2024, according to <em><a href="https://www.etnews.com/20250710000205">ETNews</a></em>. Since then, the AI suite has reached the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-6/">Galaxy Z Fold6</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-6/">Z Flip6</a>, S24 FE, Tab S10 series, and more recently, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/01/23/galaxy-s25-ultra-launched-heres-what-sets-it-apart-from-the-s24-ultra/">S25 lineup</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/09/galaxy-z-fold-7-is-official-samsung-thinnest-fold/">Z Fold7</a>/<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/09/samsung-galaxy-z-flip-7-z-flip-7-fe-launch/">Flip7</a> family.</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/10/samsung-confirms-galaxy-tab-s11-series-launch-timeframe/">Galaxy Tab S11</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/10/samsung-galaxy-s25-fe-makes-a-real-life-appearance-ahead-of-launch/">S25 FE</a>, both expected later this year, will continue the expansion. Even mid-range phones like the Galaxy A35, A36, A55, and A56 are getting “Awesome Intelligence”—a trimmed-down version of Galaxy AI that still brings handy features like real-time translation.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="700" height="496" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/news-p.v1.20250710.378168609bf243b7993dbf137b4ae588_P1.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-696323" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/news-p.v1.20250710.378168609bf243b7993dbf137b4ae588_P1.jpg 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/news-p.v1.20250710.378168609bf243b7993dbf137b4ae588_P1-300x213.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/news-p.v1.20250710.378168609bf243b7993dbf137b4ae588_P1-696x493.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/news-p.v1.20250710.378168609bf243b7993dbf137b4ae588_P1-593x420.jpg 593w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/news-p.v1.20250710.378168609bf243b7993dbf137b4ae588_P1-100x70.jpg 100w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></figure></div>

<p>Another noteworthy detail from the announcement is that Samsung’s tri-fold phone—the Galaxy G Fold—and its upcoming XR devices are now confirmed for launch by the end of the year, both enriched with Galaxy AI capabilities. Samsung also reaffirmed its commitment to keeping all AI features free through the end of 2025. However, this likely means that some advanced tools could be paywalled after that, potentially starting with the Galaxy S26 series.</p>

<p>Running on One UI 8 and Android 16, the latest version of Galaxy AI includes tools like Selfie Studio, Interpreter Mode, and smart multitasking — all designed to make daily tasks easier and more intuitive.</p>

<p>Samsung’s push to reach 400 million AI-powered devices by year’s end reflects a major shift in how it envisions the future of mobile tech. Whether you&#8217;re picking up a foldable, a tablet, or even a wearable, chances are Galaxy AI will be right there with you.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/">Samsung</a> has reportedly finished developing its first tri-fold smartphone — but it’s not rushing to release it. According to a company executive, the device is production-ready, but its launch depends on a bigger question: is there enough demand for it?</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="606" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-1024x606.jpg?x10805" alt="Samsung tri-fold" class="wp-image-669668" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-1024x606.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-300x178.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-768x454.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-696x412.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-1068x632.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold-710x420.jpg 710w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Samsung-tri-fold.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>In a recent interview with <em>Android Authority</em>, a Samsung executive <a href="https://www.androidauthority.com/samsung-tri-fold-triple-screen-foldable-details-3574317/">confirmed</a> that the tri-fold phone, expected to be <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/galaxy-g-fold/">called the Galaxy G Fold</a>, is fully designed and technically ready for mass production. However, the company is waiting to see if consumers are actually interested in a device like this before moving forward. </p>

<p>“We’ve had a tri-fold for some time, designed and everything. So it’s not a new concept to us. What we’re debating is the viability. When I say the viability, is there really a demand for this form factor?” This careful approach suggests Samsung is wary of pushing a product too far ahead of its time.</p>

<p>Unlike Huawei’s Mate XT (<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/10/25/huawei-mate-xt-true-review-the-new-phone-everyone-wants/">review</a>), which launched with an S-shaped outward folding screen for around $2,800, Samsung’s version uses a G-shaped fold. This design includes two inward-folding hinges to better protect the flexible display, though it also requires a separate cover screen. The G Fold is expected to cost over $3,000 when it launches — significantly more than the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/07/10/how-samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7-improved-over-its-predecessors/">Galaxy Z Fold7</a>’s $1,999 price — due to its complex engineering and materials.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/samsung-tri-fold-one-ui-8-file-img.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-696274" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/samsung-tri-fold-one-ui-8-file-img.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/samsung-tri-fold-one-ui-8-file-img-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/samsung-tri-fold-one-ui-8-file-img-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/samsung-tri-fold-one-ui-8-file-img-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/samsung-tri-fold-one-ui-8-file-img-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Galaxy G Fold design (leaked)</figcaption></figure>

<p>Reports suggest Samsung might quietly release the device in limited quantities in South Korea and China later this year, possibly starting production in September to test market interest.</p>

<p>Powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 chip and expected to feature a large 10-inch AMOLED screen when unfolded, the G Fold would go head-to-head with Huawei’s 10.2-inch Mate XT. Still, the market for such devices remains niche — tri-fold phones accounted for just 1% of global smartphone sales in 2024, according to Counterpoint Research. Samsung appears concerned that despite the innovation, most users aren’t ready to adopt this kind of form factor.</p>

<p>The company has reportedly addressed common concerns, equipping the G Fold with a titanium frame and an IP48 rating for water and dust resistance. But the question remains: are these features enough to justify its premium price?</p>

<p>According to leaker <em><a href="https://x.com/PandaFlashPro/status/1937576112495927403">@PandaFlashPro</a></em> on X, the tri-fold phone will use a combination of titanium and aluminum for its frame and chassis. This blend should improve durability, a key concern for large foldable devices. The use of titanium, already seen in the recent Galaxy S Ultra flagships, suggests Samsung is looking to give its new foldable a premium, durable build.</p>

<p>Under the hood, the device is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/05/07/snapdragon-8-elite-vs-dimensity-9400-2/">Snapdragon 8 Elite</a>, the same flagship chip found in the Galaxy S25 series. That’ll reportedly be paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, helping the phone handle multitasking, gaming, and AI features with ease.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="464" height="279" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot-2025-06-29-035737.png?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-694698" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot-2025-06-29-035737.png 464w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot-2025-06-29-035737-300x180.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px" /></figure></div>

<p>However, one feature users may notice missing is an under-display camera (UDC). Instead, the phone is expected to stick with a punch-hole camera, likely with a 12MP sensor. This aligns with rumors that Samsung is backing away from UDC tech due to its limitations — something also <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/19/samsung-galaxy-z-fold-7-official-renders-show-how-thin-the-foldable-is/">reflected</a> in leaks around the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold7.</p>

<p>Battery specs are still under wraps, but early chatter suggests Samsung may use a conventional battery rather than a newer silicon-carbon cell, or <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/06/20/galaxy-phones-with-si-c-battery-samsung-could-be-betting-big-on-its-new-all-solid-state-batteries/">its solid-state battery</a> that&#8217;s still under development. The battery capacity is expected to be around 4,400 mAh.</p>

<p>There’s speculation that the tri-fold might make a brief appearance during Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9 in New York, alongside the Z Fold7 and Z Flip7. A full launch is rumored for October, at least in select markets like China and South Korea.</p>

<p>With a rumored price tag of around $2,800, the Galaxy tri-fold is shaping up to be a strong contender in the ultra-premium foldable market, potentially taking on rivals like Huawei’s Mate XT with its innovative software features.</p>
