If you own a Samsung Galaxy J5 or a Galaxy J7 (2017), you may start seeing a new pop up on your notification bar. It is a new OTA update which focuses on security. The new firmware update contains the security patch from the month of February, so the latest one released by Google. In case you do not know, Big G releases these patches every month to fix the vulnerabilities of its operating system.

The patch for the month of February is very important because it fixes Spectre and Meltdown, which are among the most dangerous vulnerabilities ever discovered on Android and Windows. The update for Samsung Galaxy J5 and J7 (2017) comes right after the one for Galaxy XCover 4 and Galaxy A5 (2017), and it should arrive soon to flagships as well (Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8).

Besides the February security patch, the update also includes fixes for 16 vulnerabilities present in Samsung’s software. The new update brings the version number to J530FXXU2ARB2M on the Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017) and to J727UUEU3ARB1 on the Galaxy J7 (2017). Samsung had launched the Galaxy J5 (2017) in June and now it has released an updated version of the same phone with Galaxy J5 Pro (2017) moniker. As mentioned in the headline of this report, the Galaxy J5 Pro (2017) arrives with better RAM and storage.

The Samsung Galaxy J5 Pro (2017) features a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED screen that produces a HD resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. It is driven by Exynos 7870 chipset that features a 1.6 GHz octa-core processor and Mali-T830 MP2 graphics.

The Galaxy J5 (2017) features 16 GB of storage and 2 GB of RAM for Latin America. For Southeast Asia countries, Samsung has released the smartphone with 32 GB of storage and 2 GB of RAM. However, the newly launched Galaxy J5 Pro (2017) s equipped with 32 GB of storage and 3 GB of RAM. Rest of the specifications of the Galaxy J5 Pro (2017) is same as that of the non-Pro model. All the variants feature a microSD card slot.

There is a single-LED enabled 13-megapixel rear camera available on the Galaxy J5 Pro (2017). Its front camera of 13-megapixel is enabled with a LED flash. The fingerprint sensor is embedded under the physical Home button at the front. The handset is running on Android 7.0 Nougat OS and carries support for Samsung Pay. It is packed with a 3,000mAh battery. It is a 4G smartphone that carries support for v4.2 Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual-band and NFC.

As far as the appearance of the phone is concerned, it sports the same metallic chassis along with curved antenna bands at the top and bottom portions of the rear panel which is available on the Galaxy J5 (2017).

Currently, the Galaxy J5 Pro (2017) has been only introduced in Thailand. It is available with a pricing of THB 9,990 (~$330). As of this writing, there is no information on whether Samsung will be making it available in other regions.

On July 4, the South Korean company had introduced the Galaxy J5 (2017) in South Korea. The smartphone is available through multiple carriers in the country with a pricing of 344,300 KRW (~$300). It is available in three colors like black, blue and pink.

The Samsung Galaxy J5 (2017 has a 5.2-inch AMOLED screen that also supports a HD resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. The Exynos 7870 SoC featuring a quad-core processor that works at 1.6 GHz and 2 GB powers the smartphone. It has an inbuilt storage of 16 GB and carries support for microSD card and dual-SIM. It features a front-mounted fingerprint reader.

It has 13-megapixel cameras at the front as well as back. It receives power from a 3,000mAh battery. The Galaxy J5 (2017) would be available for buying in Europe later this month (probably on June 22) with a pricing of €279 (~$315)

Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) Specs, Price, Availability

The Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) is the lowest powered and cheapest phone among the 2017 Galaxy J series smartphones. It features a 5-inch TFT screen that supports an HD resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. It is driven by Exynos 7570 chipset that includes a quad-core processor that clocks at 1.4 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. The internal storage of the phone is 16 GB. It also features a microSD card and carries dual-SIM support

Its main camera is of 13-megapixel and its front-facing camera is of 5-megapixel. A 2,400mAh battery is packed inside the Galaxy J3 (2017). Even though it’s a low range phone it sports a metallic body. It will be available for purchase in August with a pricing of €219 (~$245). This phone is also available through AT&T in the U.S. since the past weeks.

All the three Samsung Galaxy J (2017) smartphones feature metallic chassis and are running on Android 7.0 Nougat OS. Other markets are also expected to receive the new Galaxy J phones in the coming months.
