The M-series that was introduced this year is an online exclusive and is sold via Amazon, Flipkart, and the official Samsung website in the subcontinent. The only offline retailers selling the M-series are the Samsung Experience Stores located throughout the country. However, that could change soon as the chaebol is planning to introduce the next Galaxy M device through its third-party offline retail chain in 2020.

According to a post by The Economic Times, offline retail unions have demanded major smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi start working with them again. The recent discounts and online-exclusive launches have hit the offline market quite bad, which is now recording a sales decline of nearly 30 – 40%.

The country’s trade organizations like the All India Mobile Retailers Association and All India Traders recently voiced their concerns regarding the destructive online pricing strategy. The aggressive pricing, especially during the holiday season, is encouraging people to purchase smartphones online, further bleeding the offline stores.

Editor’s Pick: Samsung Exynos 980 specifications officially confirmed

Samsung decided to heed the demands of its offline retail partners and sell the upcoming Galaxy M-series smartphones through offline stores as well. Representatives from Samsung India’s mobile phone business team informed retailers about this decision via WhatsApp on Friday. The government had earlier warned ecommerce platforms against disruptive pricing. Smartphone manufacturers are finally starting to take heed.

In related news, Samsung is gearing up to launch its next M-series device in India. The chaebol recently sent a notification to its retail partners in the subcontinent that read, “We look forward to providing the next M-series smartphone at the same price and at the same time. We shall assess the value proposition for our retail partners and consumers and plan our course of action accordingly”. Despite the details being far from clear, Samsung will most-likely introduce the Galaxy M50 on Nov. 15. The smartphone will be sold via online and offline retailers.

Although details of the Galaxy M50 are unknown, its specifications are slated to be a notch higher than the Galaxy M40 that it succeeds. The M40 flaunts a 6.3-inch full-HD+ display with a punch-hole camera with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 certification. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 675 chipset with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, expandable up to 512GB with a microSD card. The smartphone features a triple-camera setup at the rear consisting of 32-megapixel, 8-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors. The front camera uses a 16-megapixel lens. Powering the Galaxy M40 is a 3,500 mAh battery with fast charging. The device runs on Android 9.0 Pie-based One UI. Security measures include a fingerprint scanner on the rear panel and Face Unlock.

Not just any Snapdragon processor but the Snapdragon 675. It also brings along some other upper mid-range features and a surprising price tag.

The Galaxy M40 starts at INR 19,990 (~$280). To keep the price low, Samsung has equipped it with a PLS Infinity-O display and not a Super AMOLED type. The screen has a punch hole in the top left corner just like the 2018 Galaxy A8s and is covered with Gorilla Glass. However, it doesn’t come with a speaker at the top for calls but pumps out sounds by vibrating the screen (Screen Sound Technology).

There is 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage paired with the processor. A MicroSD card slot (hybrid) will let you add up to 512GB of additional storage. Inside the notch is a 16MP f/2.0 camera while the rear is home to vertically stacked triple cameras.

The primary camera is a 32MP f/1.7 sensor and it is paired with a 5MP f/2.2 Live Focus camera and an 8MP 123° ultra-wide angle camera. It can record slow-mo videos at 240fps as well as hyper-lapse videos. The Galaxy M40 has Widevine L1 certification and Dolby Atmos 360° surround sound. Sadly, it doesn’t have an audio jack but Samsung has included a pair of Type-C earphones in the box.

The M40 has a 3500mAh battery with support for 15W fast charging. It has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner but also supports Face Unlock. The phone runs One UI based on Android Pie out of the box, has NFC, and Bluetooth 5.0.

It comes in two color variants (pictured above) and will go on sale on June 18 at 12 noon.

Do the above specs sound familiar? Yes, they do. These are the exact specifications as the Galaxy A60 which is sold in China.

A fresh report has revealed that it will be soon launching in India with a price tag of Rs. 25,000 (~$355). The Galaxy M30 that was announced in April with a starting price of Rs. 14,990 (~$213). Hence, the Galaxy M40 will be releasing in the Indian market with the most expensive M-series phone.

Citing information from industry sources, IANS has reported that the Galaxy M40 will be the first M-series phone to feature a punch-hole display which is dubbed as Infinity-O design by Samsung. It will allow the phone to offer a high screen-to-body ratio. Apart from revealing the speculated price of the phone, the report also claims that the Galaxy M40 will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a triple camera setup.

The exact size of the display of Samsung Galaxy M40 is not known. A recently leaked teaser of the phone with #OMG hashtag is a hint that it will be arriving with a punch-hole Infinity-O display. The screen could be embedded with a fingerprint sensor.

The Geekbench listing of the Samsung Galaxy M40 has revealed that it will be fueled by the Snapdragon 675 chipset. After the Galaxy A70, the M40 will be the second Samsung smartphone will be fueled by the Snapdragon 675. The Galaxy M30, M20 and M10 phones that have launched in the past are equipped with Samsung’s home-brewed Exynos chipsets. The SoC of the Galaxy M40 is expected to arrive with 6 GB of RAM.

Early reports of the Galaxy M40 will be arriving with a native storage of 128 GB. There is no confirmation on whether the handset will be available in a lower variant featuring 64 GB of native storage. The One UI based Android 9 Pie OS will come preinstalled on the device. Since the Galaxy M30 is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery, it is speculated the Galaxy M40 will be also arriving with a same-sized battery. As of this writing, there is no information available on the triple camera setup of the Galaxy M40 phone.
