<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The Samsung Galaxy S series has been the best-selling premium Android smartphone family for years. They have always been the best Samsung phone of their released year, in addition to Galaxy Note.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Hence, these handsets are also popular in the developer community. In fact, they have such a fan following that a developer has managed to port Android 12  for the almost 11-year-old Galaxy S2. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">At the same time, yet another developer ported Android 12 for the nearly 10-year-old Galaxy S3. That’s not all, the latest version of Android is also available for Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, and Galaxy Note9, courtesy of one more developer.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Therefore, if you have any of the aforementioned devices lying around, then you can try installing the Android 12 custom ROM on them. However, do note that these software builds have multiple bugs. So don’t expect fully functional software.</span></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-361265 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Galaxy S2" width="4000" height="2375" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2.jpg 4000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-300x178.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-768x456.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-1024x608.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-696x413.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-1068x634.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-707x420.jpg 707w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-1920x1140.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 4000px) 100vw, 4000px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Android fragmentation is a known issue for years. It has reduced to a certain level with the introduction of Project Treble but the problem is yet to be solved fully. Recently, Google and Qualcomm </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/17/google-qualcomm-4year-android-update-what-you-should-know/"><span style="font-weight: 400">announced</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> that certain high-end Snapdragon SoCs starting with </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/12/03/snapdragon-888-detailed-specifications-officially-confirmed/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Snapdragon 888</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> will support up to four years of software updates (3 years of Android updates and 4 years of security patches).</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Though the announcement sounded big, actually it wasn’t. Because Samsung had </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/18/heres-the-official-list-of-samsung-galaxy-devices-eligible-for-three-generations-of-android-updates/"><span style="font-weight: 400">already promised</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> three generations of Android updates for select devices earlier this year and </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Google/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Google</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> has been providing the same for Pixels since their inception. Anyway, the improvement is better than nothing.</span></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Hence, learning that Galaxy S2 from 2011 can run Android 11 after 9 years from its launch is big news. Owners of this phone can try the latest version of Android, which is yet to hit many flagship smartphones released this year.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Android-11/"><span style="font-weight: 400">Android 11</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> for Galaxy S2 comes as an unofficial port of LineageOS 18.1 by several XDA Senior Members such as rINanDO, ChronoMonochrome, and others. Since the ROM is compliant with Isolated Recovery (IsoRec), it can be directly flashed via Odin. However, users will have to re-partition and wipe the internal storage of their handset for the installation process.</span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-361266 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-Featured.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung Galaxy S2 Featured" width="1440" height="810" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-Featured.jpg 1440w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-Featured-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-Featured-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-Featured-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-Featured-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-Featured-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Samsung-Galaxy-S2-Featured-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1440px) 100vw, 1440px" /></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Anyway, if you are still owning this phone, it may be mostly lying around somewhere without any use. Therefore, if you are interested in modding, flashing Android 11 on this smartphone is not a bad idea.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">According to </span><a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-unofficial-android-11-lineageos-18-1/"><i><span style="font-weight: 400">XDA Developers</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400">, this ROM port is only applicable for the Galaxy S2 with model number </span><b>GT-I9100</b><span style="font-weight: 400">. As of now, the screen, Wi-Fi, camera, and audio are working properly. But RIL is still a work in progress as users can only receive calls and cannot make one. Similarly, GPS, FM Radio, screencasting, and other features don’t work yet.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">You can find the steps to install Android 11 on the Samsung Galaxy S2 by visiting this </span><a href="https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-unofficial-11-0-0-r17-i9100-lineageos-18-0-alpha.4199759/"><span style="font-weight: 400">link</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">.</span></p>
