Samsung has officially launched its next generation of wearables, the Galaxy Watch 8 series, at the recent Unpacked event. The new smartwatches build on what Samsung already does well: solid fitness tracking, seamless Android integration, and consistent design. 

But with the Galaxy Watch 8 series, Samsung has decided to make a few bolder changes, both visually and under the hood. The company is also bringing back the Classic model this year, complete with everyone’s favorite rotating bezel.

Here are the new features that make the Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic what they are.

New Squircle Design

The most immediately noticeable change in the Galaxy Watch 8 series is the design. The watches are now squircle in shape compared to the round casing of the Watch 7 line. 

Essentially, this means both the Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic have a square case with a round display. It’s a bold visual shift that brings the Galaxy Watch 8 and 8 Classic closer in form to the Galaxy Watch Ultra.

This design might take some getting used to. Traditional round watches have a timeless aesthetic, and some may prefer that classic look. But on the wrist, the wearables still look modern and refined.

Also, the Watch 8 is nearly a millimeter thinner than its predecessor at 8.6mm. The new shape also helps the device sit more securely on the wrist, which Samsung claims improves sensor accuracy. 

Samsung has also improved how the straps attach. There’s now a quick-release mechanism similar to what we’ve seen on the Watch Ultra. It makes swapping out bands easier. However, you wouldn’t be able to use earlier Galaxy Watch bands on the new models.

A Brighter, Still OLED Display

Both Watch 8 models retain OLED displays, but brightness now reaches up to 3,000 nits, according to Samsung. This level of brightness matches what Apple offers with the Watch Ultra 2. 

While the Watch 7 was already easy to see in direct sunlight, the bump in brightness ensures better visibility in harsh lighting conditions. That said, the difference might be difficult to detect under normal circumstances.

Samsung hasn’t changed the display resolution or size in any significant way, so the brightness bump is the headline improvement here. It’s a modest but useful upgrade, especially for users who spend a lot of time outdoors.

Expanded Health Tracking with Sleep and Vascular Features

Samsung continues to treat health tracking as a major priority in its smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch 8 series brings new and updated health features, though most of them lean toward lifestyle advice rather than medical-grade diagnostics.

New in One UI 8 Watch is a “Bedtime Guidance” system that recommends sleep times based on personal habits. It requires at least three nights of sleep data to begin offering insights. 

The sleep apnea detection feature has also received EU medical certification, lending more credibility to its measurements.

Another addition is vascular strain measurement, designed to monitor the condition of blood vessels during sleep. While useful, this feature is not medically certified.

There’s also a new Antioxidant Index feature that estimates levels of free radicals in the body. However, it requires users to remove the watch and place a thumb on the sensor. Like other new tools, it serves more as a general wellness guide than a diagnostic tool.

Beyond these, the Watch 8 continues to offer the usual health tracking features, including body composition analysis, heart rate monitoring, blood pressure tracking, and ECG readings (when paired with a Samsung smartphone and the Health Monitor app).

Google Gemini Replaces (Some of) Bixby

Perhaps one of the most interesting additions to the Galaxy Watch 8 is Google Gemini integration. For years, Bixby has handled voice assistance on Samsung watches, though to lukewarm reception. Now, users can choose Gemini as an alternative.

Gemini is available via LTE and Wi-Fi and supports a range of voice commands; everything from sending messages to creating reminders or generating basic routes. 

It doesn’t yet support full conversational AI or work with all apps (WhatsApp replies, for example, are not available). But it’s an improvement over Bixby in terms of functionality and cloud-connected features.

That doesn’t mean Bixby is gone. It still handles all offline tasks and can be set as the default assistant. Users can configure which assistant is triggered via the top button, now dubbed the “AI Button.”

Wear OS continues to be the foundation of the Watch 8 software experience. The Play Store offers access to standalone apps like WhatsApp and Spotify, as well as many other Android-compatible services.

Running Coach and Upgraded Sports Features

The Galaxy Watch 8 introduces a new running coach feature designed to help runners of all levels train more effectively. It uses the 12-minute Cooper test as a starting point to assess a user’s fitness level and build a customized running plan from there.

During workouts, the watch offers real-time coaching feedback, like maintaining the correct pace or adjusting intensity. The watches also include dual-frequency GPS to improve location accuracy during outdoor exercise.

These fitness improvements aren’t exclusive to professional athletes. They’re designed for anyone who wants to monitor or improve their daily activity without diving into complex metrics. It’s a subtle but useful evolution for Samsung’s fitness platform.

Samsung’s summer Unpacked show in Brooklyn wasn’t just about foldable phones. The company also rolled out three new wearables—the Galaxy Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic, and an updated Galaxy Watch Ultra in Titanium Blue—each packing a faster chip, brighter screens, and some genuinely fresh health features.

The regular Galaxy Watch 8 comes in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes (Graphite or Silver) and is Samsung’s thinnest watch yet at 8.6 mm. The Super AMOLED panels now top out at 3,000 nits, making them easy to read in direct sun. The Watch 8 Classic sticks with its fan‑favorite rotating bezel, steps up to 46 mm, and doubles storage to 64 GB.

All three models share Samsung’s new 3‑nm Exynos W1000 processor, 2 GB of RAM, and Wear OS 6 skinned with One UI 8 Watch.

New health sensors and coaching tools

Samsung’s upgraded BioActive Sensor adds two headline measurements:

Antioxidant Index – checks carotenoid levels in about five seconds to give a snapshot of dietary health.
Vascular Load – gauges how much strain your cardiovascular system is under after a tough workout or stressful day.

For runners, a revamped Running Coach now offers real‑time pacing cues and post‑run form analysis, while Bedtime Guidance digs into sleep stages and snoring patterns. You’ll also see a single Energy Score each morning that rolls activity, rest, and heart‑rate variability into one number.

AI and other improvements

Google’s Gemini is baked into Wear OS 6, so you can start a workout, reply to a message, or check tomorrow’s calendar with a quick voice prompt—handy if your phone’s across the room.

Battery capacities range from 325 mAh (40 mm) up to 590 mAh on the Ultra, with faster wireless charging across the board. All models carry IP68 and 5 ATM ratings plus dual‑frequency GPS for better accuracy in cities or canyons.

Samsung will officially unveil its latest smartwatch lineup at the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9. Ahead of the launch, all specifications and pricing for Europe have surfaced, confirming three models: Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, and Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025).

Galaxy Watch 8

The Watch 8 comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes, both with Super AMOLED displays offering 3000 nits brightness. The 40mm variant features a 1.34-inch display (438×438 resolution), a 325mAh battery, and weighs 30g. The 44mm model offers a 1.47-inch display (480×480), 435mAh battery, and weighs 34g. Both versions are built with aluminum armor and sapphire glass, including 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, and are powered by the Exynos W1000 chipset.

Galaxy Watch 8 Classic

The Classic model keeps the rotating bezel and comes in a 46mm size with a 1.34-inch Super AMOLED display (438×438, 327 ppi). It uses stainless steel and sapphire glass for added durability. It weighs 63.5g and packs a 445mAh battery. Like Watch 8, it runs One UI 8.0, features the same chipset, and includes 2GB RAM but offers 64GB storage.

Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025)

This 47mm model introduces advanced features like an 86dB emergency siren. It includes a 1.47-inch Super AMOLED display (480×480), 590mAh battery, titanium body with sapphire glass, 2GB RAM, and 64GB storage. It weighs 60.5g and runs the same One UI 8.0 and Exynos W1000 processor.

The renders showcase a unified “squircle” design—a squarish chassis with a round display—first introduced with the original Galaxy Watch Ultra. This new aesthetic now defines the entire Watch 8 lineup, setting it apart from previous models.

The Galaxy Watch 8 Classic marks the return of the beloved physical rotating bezel, a fan-favorite feature for intuitive navigation. Like the Ultra, it sports three side buttons: a home/power key, a back key, and a round Quick/Action button for launching apps or workouts. These watches are set to launch with One UI 8 Watch, based on Wear OS. Expect advanced tracking like carotenoid level measurements, personalized running guidance, and improved sleep monitoring tools. Posts on X from tipsters like @OnLeaks suggest the Watch Ultra 2 could feature a titanium frame and enhanced durability, while the Watch 8 and Classic focus on larger displays and longer battery life. The Unpacked event, rumored for July 13, 2025, in New York City, is expected to confirm these details alongside the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7.

Samsung’s next batch of smartwatches is just a few weeks out from going official. The Galaxy Watch 8 series is expected to debut alongside the company’s latest foldables at its July Unpacked event.

If you’ve been keeping up, Samsung’s smartwatch strategy has followed a pretty predictable rhythm over the years. Two models per generation, usually offered in multiple sizes, and both Bluetooth and LTE variants. 

Typically, there’s a standard model and a fancier Classic version with a beloved rotating bezel. But last year, Samsung skipped the Watch 7 Classic entirely and went with the more rugged Watch Ultra instead.

Now, if the leaks are to be believed, Samsung might be hitting rewind. The Galaxy Watch 8 lineup is rumored to bring back the Classic model with the physical rotating bezel. It’ll reportedly launch alongside the regular Watch 8.

So, what exactly can we expect from this year’s wearables? Here’s everything we know so far. 

What design changes can we expect?

There’s nothing official from Samsung just yet, but thanks to a steady stream of leaks and renders, we’ve already got a pretty solid idea of what’s coming.

Design-wise, the Galaxy Watch 8 series is getting a major makeover. Both the regular and Classic models are expected to adopt a “squircle” shape, just like the rugged Galaxy Watch Ultra.

And this design shift isn’t just speculation, either. References to the new shape have popped up in Samsung’s One UI 8 firmware, and we have also had a good look at the Watch 8 Classic, thanks to the high-quality CAD renders.

More recently, the Watch 8 Classic surfaced in a few real-life images, which confirms the Watch Ultra’s squircle design and return of a physical rotating bezel. It has three buttons on the right side and a speaker grill on the left. 

There appears to be a change in the strap system as well. Based on the leaked photos, the Watch 8 Classic doesn’t use the same strap connectors as older models. As a result, your old Galaxy Watch bands might not fit the new hardware.

AI, Health Features, and the Usual Speculation

Samsung itself has been hinting at “AI-powered” upgrades across its Galaxy ecosystem, and that likely includes the upcoming Galaxy smartwatches as well.

In a recent shareholder call, the company teased that an upcoming Galaxy Watch will feature an “innovative design and enhanced health-related features.” That could mean anything, but AI integration seems like a safe bet, given the industry-wide push in that direction.

Last year’s Galaxy Watch 7 introduced some AI-backed coaching tools, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Samsung double down. We might see more personalized training plans, adaptive workout recommendations, or AI-generated health summaries that draw from multiple sensor inputs.

The Galaxy Watch 8 may also include non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. Samsung officially announced this feature in January, so it’s plausible to expect it in the upcoming Watch 8 series. There are also rumors that Samsung will introduce an “antioxidant index” as part of its Samsung Health suite.

Software Changes

As with most annual updates, the new smartwatches will launch with a refreshed version of Wear OS. There’s not a lot we know about the new OS, but it’s said to bring Samsung’s new “Now Bar” feature from phones to wearables. 

If true, the Now Bar will act as a persistent, interactive widget that displays quick information and controls on the screen.

So, who is this for?

If you’re still using a Galaxy Watch 4 or earlier, the Galaxy Watch 8 series could be a meaningful upgrade. Between better sensors, a slightly improved battery, and updated software, there’s enough here to justify a switch, especially if you’ve missed the rotating bezel.

But if you’re coming from a Watch 6 or 7, the upgrades might feel incremental. Slight design refinements, an efficiency-focused processor, and some AI-driven software features don’t amount to a full generational leap. 

As we move closer to the official launch, more concrete details will likely emerge. But based on what we know so far, the Galaxy Watch 8 looks like a careful generational evolution.

Samsung’s next-generation smartwatches, likely to be called the Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic, have taken a step closer to launch as their batteries have appeared in a regulatory certification platform. The listings reveal that there will be a slight battery capacity bump for the standard model this year.

Two battery models—EB-BL330ABY and EB-BL505ABY—were spotted in SafetyKorea’s database, linked to devices with model numbers SM-L330 and SM-L505. These are believed to belong to the Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic.

Galaxy Watch 8 (SM-L330):

• Battery capacity: 435 mAh on the 44mm variant (up from 425 mAh in the Watch 7)
• Also certified by TUV Rheinland, which confirms its safety compliance

Galaxy Watch 8 Classic (SM-L505):

These follow Samsung’s predictable naming pattern—think SM-L310 and SM-L315 for the Watch 7—making it a safe bet these are the real deal.

Though specs remain under wraps, the leak signals that Samsung is almost done with the Galaxy Watch 8 models. With the Watch 7’s upgraded health sensor and AI-driven wellness and sleep tracking, expectations are high for the Watch 8 to refine these strengths.
