Samsung could be about to make its Galaxy Z Fold series feel more premium and durable. The company is reportedly testing a thicker layer of Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) on upcoming models, which could finally make the dreaded crease much less noticeable at first glance and help the screen hold up better against everyday bumps and drops.

According to supply chain reports, Samsung is looking at a 60-micron-thick UTG layer. That’s a noticeable jump from what we’ve seen before. This thicker glass is apparently being tried out first on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide: the broader, passport-style version that has a different aspect ratio. It makes sense as a test run. If it works well, we could see it roll out more widely on the Galaxy Z Fold 9.

For comparison, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to stick with the current 45-micrometer glass that’s been used on recent models like the Z Fold 7. This selective approach lets Samsung gather real-world feedback on the new material without betting everything on it at once.

The Z Fold 6 used 30-micrometer glass, then later models moved up to 45 micrometers for better toughness. Jumping to 60 microns would be another solid step forward.

Beyond the display, Samsung is also working on better hinges and protective layers overall. The goal? Make Galaxy foldables more reliable for heavy multitasking, watching videos, and getting actual work done.

All of this is happening as Samsung gears up for its next big Unpacked event. Rumors point to July 22, 2026, in London, UK. If these upgrades land as expected, the Z Fold 8 Wide could really stand out as a more refined option in a foldable market that’s getting more competitive every year.

It’s still early days and nothing is officially confirmed yet, but these developments show Samsung is listening to feedback and pushing foldable hardware forward. Samsung’s wider foldable design is no longer really a secret at this point. Earlier leaks already gave us a fairly good idea of the new aspect ratio through screen protector images, CAD renders, and even a metal dummy shown side-by-side with a more traditional tall Fold design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

What makes the latest leak more interesting is the level of detail. Newly surfaced dummy units shared by Sonny Dickson look much closer to actual production hardware rather than simple aluminum placeholders, giving a better sense of the device’s proportions, thickness, and overall in-hand feel.

The images show three upcoming Samsung foldables together, including the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip 8, and the wider Fold variant that has been appearing in previous rumors. Compared to older Galaxy Fold models, the wider version looks noticeably shorter and broader, moving closer to the proportions of a small tablet when unfolded.

One of the more surprising details is the thickness. Despite the larger footprint, the device appears extremely thin, staying close to Galaxy Z Fold 7 territory. Earlier leaks suggested around 9.8mm folded and roughly 4.3mm unfolded.

The dummy also reveals more refined exterior details that previous leaks did not show clearly. On the back, the wider model appears to use a pill-shaped camera island housing two camera sensors, likely a main and ultrawide setup. It may hint that the company is intentionally differentiating this model from the Ultra-branded variant.

Another thing the newer dummy units help visualize better is the overall usability of the wider aspect ratio. Previous Galaxy Fold devices have often been criticized for feeling too narrow when closed and slightly awkward when unfolded. The wider design appears much more practical for typing, multitasking, gaming, and watching videos without excessive black bars.

Samsung is expected to unveil its next foldables during a Galaxy Unpacked event in July, reportedly taking place in London.

At this point, the wider aspect ratio itself is not really the new part anymore. What these latest dummy leaks mainly do is give a much clearer look at how refined the hardware may already be, and how Samsung could finally be moving toward a foldable design that feels less experimental and more naturally usable day to day.

According to a new report from TechManiacs, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup could bring larger batteries, slimmer bodies, and even a new wider version of the Fold.

The regular Galaxy Z Fold 8 is reportedly getting thinner again, measuring around 4.1mm when unfolded, down slightly from the Z Fold 7’s 4.2mm thickness. Weight is also said to drop to roughly 210 grams, compared to 215 grams on the current model. Together, these changes should make the phone feel a bit less bulky in everyday use. Samsung foldables have improved steadily in this area, but Chinese brands like Honor and Huawei have been moving much faster lately, so the pressure is clearly there.

Battery life may finally see a meaningful upgrade too. The Fold 8 was previously tipped to jump from the Fold 7’s 4,400mAh battery to a larger 5,000mAh unit, along with faster 45W charging. That may not sound huge on paper, but Fold users have been asking for better battery endurance for a long time.

The more interesting leak, though, is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. Samsung reportedly is testing a wider foldable with a 7.6-inch inner display using a near-square 4:3-style aspect ratio. In other words, something that feels more like a small tablet when opened instead of the tall, narrow Fold design Samsung has used for years.

Samsung may drop the telephoto camera entirely and stick to a simpler dual 50MP setup. The saved space seemingly goes toward the battery, which is tipped to reach 4,800mAh — around 400mAh larger than the 8.0-inch Galaxy Z Fold 7.

If these reports turn out to be accurate, the Fold 8 series may end up being less about flashy new features and more about finally catching up in areas users actually care about.

The regular Galaxy Z Fold 8 does not look like a major departure. It sticks to the tall and narrow form factor Samsung has been using from the beginning. The Flip 8 follows a similar story. It keeps the compact clamshell design, focusing on portability rather than screen size. There are no major surprises here based on the dummy.

The interesting device is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. This appears to be Samsung’s answer to Huawei’s Pura X lineup. Compared to the standard Fold 8, it is shorter and noticeably wider when folded, which should make the cover screen more comfortable to use. The exact dimensions have also been revealed.

When unfolded, the difference becomes more obvious. The wider aspect ratio gives it a layout that feels closer to a small tablet, which should be better for media, reading, and general browsing. It is a different approach from Samsung’s usual design, and one that some enthusiasts have been asking for. That said, how apps scale to the wider aspect ratio will likely make or break the experience.

As for the camera system, the dummy showcases a pill-shaped layout, similar to the Fold 8, but with two cutouts instead of three. As per recent leaks, these could be a 200MP main camera and a 50MP ultrawide. The lack of a telephoto lens is likely the trade-off for a first-generation wide foldable measuring just 4.3mm when unfolded.

Alongside the regular Galaxy Z Fold 8, a new variant called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is starting to show up in leaks. The idea is to make the Fold feel more like a small tablet when it’s open, instead of sticking to the tall, narrow layout Samsung has used so far. That shift doesn’t come out of nowhere. Huawei already pushed in this direction with its Pura X lineup, and with Apple’s foldable still rumored for later this year, Samsung likely doesn’t want to sit still.

According to tipster Ice Universe, we now have a clearer look at the dimensions. When unfolded, the Z Fold 8 Wide is said to measure 161.4 x 123.9 x 4.3 mm. Folded, it comes in at 161.4 x 82.2 x 9.8 mm.

Put next to Huawei’s Pura X Max, the differences are interesting. Samsung’s version is slightly narrower (161.4mm as compared to Huawei’s 166.5mm), but noticeably thinner, especially when open. That 4.3 mm thickness stands out, and even when folded, it’s slimmer than Huawei’s 11.2 mm. So while the phone is going wider in terms of usable screen space, Samsung still seems focused on keeping the overall profile manageable in hand and pocket.

The inner screen is rumored to use a near-square 4:3 aspect ratio, which is much closer to what you’d expect from a tablet. The cover display, meanwhile, is said to sit around 4.7:3.

The thinner build could help with handling and make it stand out from the competition. However, it’s also worth noting that the black bars at the top and bottom will be slightly wider than on Huawei’s Pura X Max when streaming videos.

The Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to launch alongside the standard Fold 8 and the Z Flip 8, likely at Samsung’s usual summer event.

After flirting with a tri-fold concept, Samsung is now rumored to be working on a wider foldable, much like the Huawei Pura X. We’ve already seen early CAD renders, and the device has even cleared India’s BIS certification. 

Now, the rumored Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide has also surfaced in the One UI 9 codebase. Newly discovered graphics reveal an outer display mirroring function, along with a form factor that clearly diverges from Samsung’s current Galaxy Z Fold lineup. 

Dig into the image assets, and you’ll find filenames referencing the codename “H8” which has previously been tied to Samsung’s so-called Wide Fold project.

As for the shape of things to come, previous reports hint at a 4:3 aspect ratio for the internal display. Demo images and animations show an aspect ratio hovering around 1.3:1, which is effectively 4:3 in practice. 

For context, the existing Galaxy Z Fold 8 leans closer to a 1.11:1 ratio, giving it a more square-like profile. 

Now, that’s not to say there won’t be the regular Galaxy Z Fold 8. The Wide is a new addition to the lineup. 

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide Specifications

Based on CAD renderings, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide measures 123.9 x 82.2 x 9.8 mm when folded. When opened, it thins down to just 4.9 mm at its slimmest point.

The outer screen is said to be 5.4 inches, while the inner display stretches to 7.6 inches. Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is expected to mirror the standard model. That includes a custom Snapdragon 8-series chip, up to 16GB of RAM, and as much as 1TB of storage.

It’s also expected to come with a 5000mAh battery with support for 45W wired and 25W wireless charging.
