Earlier this year, Microsoft confirmed that it will be working with multiple partners on hardware to bring forth new Xbox powered gaming systems. This included a close collaboration with AMD sfor its next gen hardware for upcoming consoles, gaming handhelds, and more. While we already have the ROG Xbox Ally series from ASUS, a Lenovo collaboration could make sense as well.

Why Lenovo Makes Sense as Xbox’s Next Hardware Partner

Lenovo is one of the few players in the gaming handheld space, with its Legion Go series. The original Legion Go was a Windows based laptop, with more variants dropping soon after. It brought an 8.8-inch display, detachable controllers (similar to the Nintendo Switch 2), and a gamer-first design. Later on, the Chinese tech giant even partnered up with Valve for the SteamOS powered Legion Go S.

So, considering how they’ve already experimented with Steam, a new variant with special Xbox optimization sounds quite promising. The Legion Go already runs on the Windows platform, so a direct collab could make this system even better in running Xbox exclusives or Xbox Game Pass titles.

What an Xbox x Lenovo Handheld Might Look Like

If Lenovo were to partner with Xbox, the result could be a streamlined version of the Legion Go. Xbox’s design influence could help push for an interface that feels more like an extension of the console experience. A great example of this is the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. Lenovo’s handheld would benefit from deeper Game Pass integration, Xbox dashboard, and built-in Xbox Cloud Gaming out of the box.

Just recently, a prototype of the Legion Go 2 surfaced online. This gave us a look at the next-gen handheld from Lenovo. An improved controller design (still detachable), the more powerful AMD Ryzen Z2 series APU, and faster memory were revealed in this leak. Since Lenovo has already worked with Valve for the special SteamOS Legion Go S, I would like to believe that an Xbox version could also be in the works. Xbox has clearly shifted its focus from selling its consoles, which are declining in popularity, and has invested heavily in its Game Pass subscription service. Expanding on the software side and partnering with handheld console brands gives it the advantage over Sony, which has yet to expand into this segment.

ASUS has officially launched the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, two new handheld gaming consoles built in collaboration with Xbox. Talking about the hardware first, the two Xbox ROG Ally series sport a 7-inch IPS LCD panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1080p resolution, and Gorilla Glass Victus for protection. Under the hood, the base Xbox ROG Ally is equipped with the AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, which is based on the RDNA 2 technology. It houses a 60Wh battery pack, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of internal storage, and two USB-C ports (USB 3.2 Gen 2 and DisplayPort 2.1 support).

On the other hand, the ROG Xbox Ally X packs the Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip that is paired with 24GB of RAM, 1TB of internal storage, and a USB-C port with USB 4.0 and Thunderbolt 4 compatibility. While the new ROG Xbox Ally series still runs on Windows, these basically offer an Xbox full screen experience. In other words, it functions and feels more like a handheld Xbox console.

But that’s not all, the new modifications to the software allow the system to minimize background activity and end all non-essential tasks. This makes the system more power efficient and enables it to divert more power to the games. According to a Microsoft executive, simply turning off the desktop wallpaper, taskbar, and a few other Windows processes helped free up 2GB of RAM.

The ASUS ROG Ally X handheld gaming console will launch in China on July 13. This was revealed by an official statement by ASUS of its upcoming product launch event. The ROG Ally X was unveiled for the global market in June, equipped with the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU with an impressive 80Wh battery capacity. The gaming handheld comes with several improvements above its predecessor. It has a memory capacity of 24GB and its solid-state drive slot is the M.2 2280 model.

The ASUS ROG Handheld X was announced last month and is a successor to the first-generation ASUS ROG Handheld. It has a doubled battery capacity over its predecessor while the hard drive capacity is doubled to 1TB from its first iteration. The memory was also upgraded to 24GB LPDDR5X-7500. The new ASUS handheld game console has a joystick module with an upgraded lifetime of 5 million times from the original 2 million times. The spring feel is a bit tighter and can be easily replaced. The D-Pad cross-key design provides greater feedback clarity unlike previously.

The ASUS ROG Handheld X features two Type-C interfaces on the top (replacing the XG Mobile graphics card in the original model). One of the USB-C ports supports USB4 while the other is rated USB 3.2 Gen 2. Both USB-C interfaces support PD 3.0 charging and DisplayPort 1.4 connection support. The ROG Handheld X has an upgraded zero-gravity cooling system that achieves up to 30W of heat dissipation capacity. The fan size of the heat dissipation system is reduced while the air volume is increased. The ASUS ROG Handheld X gaming console is priced at $799.

A new leak has provided some of the specs and renders of an upcoming gaming handheld said to be the Powkiddy K56. The early details about the gadget indicate that it will compete against the AYANEO Pocket Micro, KT Pocket R1, and ZPG A1 Unicorn gaming handhelds. Interestingly, Powkiddy has debunked the rumors as fake news.

The new retro gaming handheld is a successor to the Powkiddy X55 that was released in 2023. Powkiddy also recently announced the V10. The Powkiddy V10 is the brand’s first gaming handheld offering since the RGB20SX (currently priced at $102.99 on Amazon).
The new leak was posted by Retro Handhelds who obtained information about the future gaming handheld with the K56 moniker. The branding of the K56 points to strong comparisons with and improvements over the X55. The Powkiddy K56 has a horizontal design and comes with a pair of joysticks. It also features two sets of shoulder buttons, ABXY and d-pad buttons in an orange accent.

The upcoming Powkiddy gaming handheld is actively cooled and features a small vent on its rear side. It has dimensions of 212 x 90 x 17 mm and its ergonomic design allows for seamless gaming. The ports available with the gaming handheld include a 3.5 mm audio jack, a MicroSD card reader, a mini HDMI port, and two USB Type-C ports.

The Powkiddy K56 is reportedly powered by an Helio G99 chipset. The MediaTek Helio G99 has been deployed in mid-range smartphones like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 13 Pro 4G. If the rumor is true, then the K56 could be as powerful as the AYANEO Pocket Micro, ZPG A1 Unicorn, and the KT Pocket R1. Of the trio, only the KT Pocket R1 is available for purchase currently.

The release date and pricing information for the Powerkiddy K56 are lacking. Sadly, this gadget may never come to life as Powkiddy has stated that the K56 isn’t an actual product in development.
