Swiss-based watchmaker Garmin has unveiled its latest smartwatch models for the Indian market. The Garmin Instinct 2 series comes in its full lineup comprised of the Instinct 2, Instinct 2, Instinct 2 Solar, Instinct 2S, and Instinct 2S Solar.

As the naming pattern suggests, the Solar model comes with solar charging. The major distinction is the Instinct 2 and Instinct 2S which both differ in size. The Instinct 2 model utilizes a 45mm bezel while the Instinct 2S features a slightly smaller 40mm bezel. The company is offering up to six different models between Instinct 2 and 2S.

The Garmin Instinct 2 series features a rugged design and is GPS-enabled. You also get fitness features such as VO2 Max and Sleep Score, trackback routing, and other activity tracking features. The smartwatches also bring a number of health stats monitoring features such as blood oxygen, heart rate, stress tracking, burned calories, respiration rate, sleep score as well as women’s health tracking.

The smartwatch comes with up to 30 different sports modes including skiing, swimming, running, biking, among others. It is well suited for water sports with a 10ATM water resistance rating.

The battery life on the non-solar models of the Instinct 2 can go up to 28 days when used in the smartwatch mode. The battery life can be extended to 65 days if the watch is on battery saver mode while it will last for just 30 hours with continuous GPS turned on. The solar models turn things up with unlimited battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 48 hours with continuous GPS mode.

On the other hand, the Garmin Instinct 2S has a peak battery life of 50 days in battery saver mode and up to 21 days in smartwatch mode. Using continuous GPS brings down the battery life to just 22 hours. The Instinct 2S Solar boasts of 51 days battery life in smartwatch mode and up to 28 hours with continuous GPS mode.

• Instinct 2 Solar Tactical Edition Black, Coyote Tan Rs. 51,990 (~$675)

The models will be on sale from March 14 via online and offline retail platforms across India.

Garmin seems to be blazing the trail with its latest multisport smartwatch model, the Garmin Instinct 2 Solar smartwatch, which the company claims, is capable of working extensively without conventional recharging. The company says that the solar versions of the Instinct 2 offer unlimited battery life due to improvements made on the solar technology supporting the models.

The Garmin Instinct 2 is built for rugged individualists and the additional unlimited battery feature in the solar versions of the model will offer greater depth and functionality of the smartwatch. Garmin is known to have put in extensive research efforts and resources in solar charging for its smartwatch, and the efforts have seemingly paid off nicely. Solar charging was debuted with the Garmin Fenix 6 series, and it has gradually been extended to other Garmin smartwatches with impressive results. The latest iteration of the solar charging feature for the Instinct 2 smartwatch marks a milestone with unlimited battery life functionality.

The Garmin Instinct 2 is a mid-range lineup and the unlimited battery claim may not be ascertained easily. It is a bold claim by the company and there could be several conditions that could warrant such functionality and its sustainability remains uncharted territory. The unlimited battery feature is only feasible on the 45mm model when it’s in smartwatch mode. This means that the unlimited battery feature will support only monitoring and notifications but it cannot operate in tracking activities. Putting the unlimited battery life claim in perspective, it may need direct sunlight support for the feature to operate.

The unlimited battery life may just be an additional layer of energy for the Instinct 2 which originally boasts of up to 28 days battery life. In any case, solar technology is an exciting feature that will continue on its trajectory of development.
