<p>Gartner has just released a new report that projected the worldwide shipments of the total devices, which includes PCs, tablets, and smartphones. This report revealed that the negative trend and decline of the smartphone market will continue in 2023 as well. So here are all the details.</p>

<p>Just a while back, we had covered <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/01/26/smartphone-market-biggest-fall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">another report</a> that revealed that the global smartphone shipments had fallen by 11.3 percent year on year in 2022. However, it appears that this trend might continue to this year as well. The report from Gartner states that the smartphone shipments will decline by 4 percent in this year. On the other hand, the worldwide device shipments are also expected to fall by 4.4 percent overall.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="780" height="470" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/The-Best-Phones-in-2022-780x470-1.jpg?x96852" alt="Smartphone" class="wp-image-512618" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/The-Best-Phones-in-2022-780x470-1.jpg 780w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/The-Best-Phones-in-2022-780x470-1-300x181.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/The-Best-Phones-in-2022-780x470-1-768x463.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/The-Best-Phones-in-2022-780x470-1-696x419.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/The-Best-Phones-in-2022-780x470-1-697x420.jpg 697w" sizes="(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px" /></figure></div>

<p>According to Ranjit Atwal, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, &#8220;The depressed economic market will continue to dampen demand for devices throughout 2023. In fact, end user spending on devices is projected to decline 5.1 percent in 2023. Just as business confidence was beginning to recover after the worst of the pandemic, it has now fallen significantly in most regions. We do not expect relief from inflation and the bottom of the recession to occur until the fourth quarter of 2023.”</p>

<p>This downward trend affects every categories including the PC, tablet, and not just the mobile phone. The former will see a 6.8 percent shipments, while the latter will have a 2.9 percent decline this year. In other words, the market expectations are quite pessimistic for this year as well.</p>

While Q4 2020 saw a decline of just 5.4 percent, the overall annual sales fell by 12.5 percent.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-372713 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-35.png?x96852" alt="Smartphone" width="572" height="359" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-35.png 831w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-35-300x188.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-35-768x482.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-35-696x436.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-35-670x420.png 670w" sizes="(max-width: 572px) 100vw, 572px" /></p>
<p>According to Anshul Gupta, senior research director at <a href="https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2021-02-22-4q20-smartphone-market-share-release" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Gartner</em></a>, &#8220;The sales of more 5G smartphones and lower-to-mid-tier smartphones minimized the market decline in the fourth quarter of 2020. Even as consumers remained cautious in their spending and held off on some discretionary purchases, 5G smartphones and pro-camera features encouraged some end users to purchase new smartphones or upgrade their current smartphones in the quarter.”</p>
<p>Furthermore, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a> was the top vendor smart vendor during the fourth quarter, and even surpassed <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a> as it held the No. 2 spot in the smartphone brand rankings for the full year of 2020. In the final quarter, the Cupertino based giant&#8217;s<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone-12/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> iPhone 12</a> series launch helped it achieve double digit growth, which also enabled it to overtake Samsung to become the leading smartphone vendor during the quarter. Notably, the last time Apple led the smartphone market was in the fourth quarter of 2016.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-372712 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-36.png?x96852" alt="Smartphone" width="574" height="363" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-36.png 850w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-36-300x190.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-36-768x486.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-36-696x441.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Screenshot-36-664x420.png 664w" sizes="(max-width: 574px) 100vw, 574px" /></p>
<p>The South Korean tech giant still lead the annual smartphone vendor rankings. However, it saw a year on year fall of 14.6 percent last year. Although, despite the decline and intense competition from Chinese vendors like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vivo</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a>, it still managed to retain the top spot. Interestingly, Apple and Xiaomi were the only two brands in the top 5 rankings to witness a growth. Meanwhile, Huawei witnessed the highest decline among every other vendor, with sales dropping by 24.1 percent year on year.</p>

<p>Samsung Electronics, based in South Korea, came in second with an 8.1 percent market share in 2020, which represents a growth of 20.4 percent compared to the previous year.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-268500 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/semiconductors.jpg?x96852" alt="Semiconductor" width="800" height="450" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/semiconductors.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/semiconductors-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/semiconductors-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/semiconductors-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/semiconductors-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a>, the Chinese giant which is now a subject of several trade restrictions imposed by the United States, stood third with a market share of 4.2 percent. However, it registered a decline of over 23.5 percent compared to its market share in the previous year.</p>
<p>The report adds that the top 10 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) increased their semiconductor spend by 10 percent in 2020, and accounted for 42 percent of the total market, up from 40.9 percent in the year 2019. Also, the top 10 companies in 2020 remained the same as in 2019.</p>
<p>It goes on to say that Apple managed to retain the top position mainly due to the continued success of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-airpods">AirPods</a>, special demand for Mac devices and iPads, and increasing NAND flash consumption.</p>
<p>As for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>, the report says that the weakened competition from Huawei and the strong demand for enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs) for data centers are the driving force behind its growth. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> registered the highest growth, 26 percent, mainly because it was among the least affected in terms of sales because of its strong online presence.</p>

This indicates a growth of about 11.4 percent over the last year.</p>
<p>Smartphone sales declined by 10.5 percent in 2020, mainly because of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/covid-19">COVID-19 pandemic</a> but now they are forecast to rebound. The report adds that markets like Western Europe, Latin America, and the Asia Pacific are expected to exhibit the strongest growth.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-345860 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Smartphone-Generic-Featured.jpg?x96852" alt="Smartphone Generic Featured" width="2310" height="1536" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Smartphone-Generic-Featured.jpg 2310w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Smartphone-Generic-Featured-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Smartphone-Generic-Featured-768x511.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Smartphone-Generic-Featured-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Smartphone-Generic-Featured-696x463.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Smartphone-Generic-Featured-1068x710.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Smartphone-Generic-Featured-632x420.jpg 632w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Smartphone-Generic-Featured-1920x1277.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2310px) 100vw, 2310px" /></p>
<p>The combination of delayed smartphone replacements and the availability of lower end <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/5g-smartphone">5G smartphones</a> are poised to increase smartphone sales in 2021, claims Anshul Gupta, senior research director at Gartner.</p>
<p>With 5G communication technology going mainstream, 5G smartphones with a starting price of $200 are expected to steer demand in mature markets and China. While in developing nations, the primary focus of buyers will be the specifications and the 5G network support will be optional and lack of it won&#8217;t be a dealbreaker.</p>
<p>Further, Gartner <a href="https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2021-02-03-gartner-says-worldwide-smartphone-sales-to-grow-11-percent-in-2021">forecasts sales</a> of 5G smartphones will total 539 million units worldwide in 2021, which will represent around 35 percent of total smartphone sales in the year. This is mostly because 5G has become a standard feature for premium phones in countries like U.S., China, Japan, and South Korea.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">As you can see from the above table, the data from IDC and Canalys are almost identical. On the other hand, Gartner’s data differ by a long shot. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">IDC says the total shipments accounted for 91.6 million units, whereas Canlays’ report shows the data a little lower at 90.3 million units. Lastly, Gartner’s data is the lowest of all at 79.4 million units.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Anyway, all these reports have two things in common. First, the ranking of brands and second, according to all of them, the last quarter’s YoY growth was highest in the past 10 years.</span></p>

If we put into perspective Huawei&#8217;s sanctions by the US government, then it can be seen that the performance is pretty impressive. Perhaps if the sanctions don&#8217;t exist, Huawei may have become the market leader by now.</p>
<p>US phone maker Apple is ranked third with a gross shipment of 38.386 million units in Q2, which was basically the same as last year. The market share was 13.0%, down 0.4% year-on-year.</p>

<p>On the whole, the smartphone market continued to experience declining shipments occasioned by the COVID 19 pandemic. <a href="https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2020-08-25-gartner-says-global-smartphone-sales-declined-20--in-?" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gartner</a> says the worldwide decline in smartphone sales was also a result of overall declines in the two largest smartphone markets. <p>According to a new report by Gartner, a known analytics firm, the global smartphone sales declined by 20.2 percent in Q1 2020. The primary reason was the COVID-19 outbreak with &#8220;most of the leading Chinese manufacturers and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a> were severely impacted by the temporary closures of their factories in China and reduced consumer spending due to the global shelter-in-place.”</p>

<p>In the list of the top 5 smartphone brands in the world, Xiaomi is the only vendor that managed to avoid the noticeable decline. The Chinese company witnessed a growth of 1.4 percent year on year from 2019, during the first quarter of 2020. On the other hand, OEMs like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> saw a sizeable decline of 22.7 percent and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a> sales shrank by 27.3 percent. Apple faired relatively better with just an 8.2 percent fall in sales, although, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo</a> also suffered by a decline of 24.2 percent during Q1.</p>

<p>Despite the Coronavirus being a primary reason for the overall market being affected, various brands dealt with the issue differently, Huawei was focused towards its local market of China while improving upon its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/hms/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HMS</a> services overseas, while Xiaomi focused heavily on the global market. Samsung and Apple had their operations heavily obstructed by the many lockdowns and disruption in their supply chains, but have ramped up production since. The first quarter does share a bleak view of the current market, but this is set to improve later on in the year.</p>

The US and China, the two countries that sell the most smartphones, saw sales decline by 15.8 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively. Samsung still leads, but <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/huawei/">Huawei</a> has surprisingly managed to maintain its second place, narrowing the gap with number one thanks to sales in China despite the US ban!</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/05/29/ieee-forced-to-ban-huawei-employees-from-peer-reviewing-papers/">Huawei ban saga</a> is one of the most interesting things to have come out of the tech world in recent years, but it hasn&#8217;t stopped them. Huawei achieved the highest year-over-year growth among the world’s top five &#8211; <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/samsung/">Samsung</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/huawei/">Huawei</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/apple/">Apple</a> and Chinese smartphone makers <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/oppo/">OPPO</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/vivo/">Vivo</a>. Huawei sold 58.4 million smartphone units in the quarter, with growth across all regions, the report showed.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-256527" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Gartner-Huawei.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="754" height="368" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Gartner-Huawei.jpg 754w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Gartner-Huawei-300x146.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Gartner-Huawei-533x261.jpg 533w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Gartner-Huawei-696x340.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 754px) 100vw, 754px" /></p>
<p>&#8220;Demand for premium smartphones remained lower than for basic smartphones, which affected brands such as Samsung and Apple that have significant stakes in high-end smartphones,&#8221; Anshul Gupta, Senior Research Director at Gartner, said in a statement.</p>
<p>The U.S., Apple’s largest smartphone market, saw total smartphone sales fall by 15.8% during the first quarter. “Apple is facing longer replacement cycles as users struggle to see enough value benefits to justify replacing existing iPhones,” Gupta said. Even though Apple cut iPhone prices in several markets, the move wasn’t enough to stoke demand and raise sales.</p>

<p>Companies that have either shunned Huawei completely or restricted buying from the company include Google, Softbank’s ARM, Analog Devices, U.S. chipmakers Intel Corp, Qualcomm Inc, Xilinx Inc, Broadcom Inc, Japanese electronics maker Panasonic Corp and BT Group’s EE. Of that list, only Panasonic has continued trade with Huawei. The WiFi, Bluetooth SIG and SD associations have also relisted the company as a partner.</p>

<p>According to the report by research firm Gartner, the China-based tech giant still maintained its third position in the global smartphone sales ranking for the third quarter 2016. Apart from that, Huawei grabbed a large slice of the market share for Q3 2016 thereby closing in on Apple who still sits at the second position. However, Apple&#8217;s lead over Huawei has shrunk a great deal according to the report, with the difference in market share coming down to less than 3%. This is attributed to Huawei making in-roads into the high-end smartphone sales, spurred by model such as Honor which was a hot sell in top-end markets.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/gartner_smartphone_sales_q3_2016/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-107740" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Gartner_smartphone_sales_Q3_2016.jpg?x96852" alt="gartner_smartphone_sales_q3_2016" width="674" height="185" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Gartner_smartphone_sales_Q3_2016.jpg 674w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Gartner_smartphone_sales_Q3_2016-300x82.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px" /></a></p>
<p>OPPO, another Chinese brand owned by BBK Electronics, also posted a very strong result during the third quarter. The company followed closely behind Huawei at number four in Gartner&#8217;s global ranking for the quarter under review. OPPO is closely followed by BBK Communication Equipment, another subsidiary of BBK Electronics.</p>

<p>Korean giant Samsung maintained its overall lead in global smartphone market share ranking for the third quarter but recorded a 14.2% loss in global market share when compared to the same period last year. Gartner posits that this was the worse ever posting by the company. The loss may be unconnected with the company&#8217;s botched Galaxy Note 7 which was predicted to amass a huge loss due to its withdrawal from the market over battery explosion related issues.</p>
