Google just launched a flashy new feature for its Gemini AI: the ability to turn photos into animated videos using its latest Veo 3 model. The announcement promised stunning results—dynamic visuals, realistic movement, and even sound. Out of curiosity, I subscribed to the Gemini AI Pro plan and gave it a spin. What I got was… not exactly what Google advertised with Veo 3.

The idea sounds great on paper. Users upload a photo, enter a prompt describing the motion and audio they want, and Gemini turns it into an eight-second, 720p MP4 video. It’s available via the Gemini app or at gemini.google.com for Pro ($20/month) and Ultra ($250/month) subscribers.

So I tested it with a straightforward, imaginative prompt: “Generate a video of this plant growing into a tree while the background (indoor) slowly turns into an open field.” What I received was closer to a PowerPoint slideshow than any sort of cinematic AI magic. The result looked like a few static images fading into one another—no fluid growth, no evolving background.

Compare this with the Veo-generated clips Google is showcasing—lush motion, realistic lighting, smooth movement—and it’s hard not to feel a little duped. It’s one thing to set expectations; it’s another to overpromise.

To be fair, Google does add SynthID watermarks on all videos to clarify they’re AI-generated and continues to block problematic prompts, such as public figures or harmful content. Also, this tool was originally part of Google’s Flow AI filmmaking product and is still new in Gemini’s chat interface. But even with that context, the current results feel undercooked.

Despite the hype, what Gemini currently offers is little more than animated transitions on static images, at least from my experience. And at $20/month, it’s hard to recommend—unless your expectations are really low or you’re animating something extremely simple.

Of course, the feature will improve with time. But for now, it feels like the AI equivalent of a movie trailer showing all the best scenes, while the actual film… drags.

Just tap the “Share screen with Live” chip in the Gemini overlay, confirm, and you’re all set for a quick conversation where Gemini sees exactly what you’re talking about. A little counter pops up in your status bar, and you can stop sharing anytime via the notification shade. Samsung announced a similar feature called “Real-Time Visual AI” just a few days ago for its 2025 flagships.

For camera sharing, head to the fullscreen Gemini Live interface and hit the camera button. A viewfinder opens, letting you switch between front and rear lenses. Google suggests steady movements for the best results, and your screen needs to stay active for video capture.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Series With Gemini AI Integration

With Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU, the Galaxy S25 series is capable of improved on-device AI functionality. This means you don’t need an internet connection for certain AI powered features and tools. Thanks to the advanced Gemini AI, users get access to enhanced accessibility tools that are seamlessly integrated in these devices.

• Galaxy S25 series supports Quick Access to Gemini. When activated by long pressing the side button, Gemini wakes up instantly and can help with any tasks or respond with relevant information based on your current screen.

• Gemini Extension are now seamlessly integrated into several Google and Samsung apps like Google Maps, YouTube, Gmail, Samsung Reminder, and many more. So Gemini can even performing tasks that include multiple different apps.

• Samsung also brings real time transcription from Gemini Live. But that’s not all, the AI can smartly record, analyze, and simplify these key conversations. It can even add pictures or YouTube videos to these recorded conversations.

• Project Astra is an upcoming set of powered features that will bring debut with the Galaxy S25 series on the Gemini mobile app and later include other Android devices. These will offer features like screen sharing and live video sharing.

Samsung and Google are closely working together for these AI features and there are more tools set to arrive later on as well. This will include TalkBack, which can offer detailed image descriptions powered by Gemini that can help users who are blind or have low vision.

Generative AI has progressed rapidly in the last two years. We’re now seeing it being integrated in consumer tech gadgets like smartphones and laptops. Major companies like Google, Microsoft, and Samsung are already riding this wave. This has put Apple far behind in the race. The Cupertino-based tech giant is already working on its AI plans. However, it has now taken a twist if the latest development is anything to go by. 

Surprise! Google’s Gemini could power iPhone’s AI features

Bloomberg reports that Apple is in active negotiations with Google to bake its Gemini AI engines into iPhones. Additionally, the company has also held talks with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The latest development signals that Apple’s own AI model development is not up to mark and can’t compete with others. The company’s employees have been testing an in-house chatbot called Apple GPT and there is also a large language model codenamed Ajax. Gurman states that “Apple’s AI technology remains inferior to tools from Google and other rivals”. 

Tim Cook had previously revealed at an earnings call that the company has a big opportunity in the GenAI space. However, with the company lagging behind, a partnership with another company to license their AI model on the iPhone seems more practical. The Cupertino-based tech giant recently acquired DarwinAI. 

As for Google, a partnership with Apple for Gemini AI would be a game-changer considering the controversies in recent months. Although the branding and implementation of the AI model in Apple’s devices remain unclear, we can expect features like image generation, writing essays, and other tasks that can be performed through an external provider or cloud. A deal with Apple would also expand Gemini AI’s reach since iPhones have over two billion user base in the market. 

If a deal between Apple and Google indeed materializes, it could shake up the AI industry. Bloomberg says that the partnership won’t be announced anytime before the annual WWDC in June.
