Gionee‘s return to the smartphone business has also kicked off in India with the launch of a new smartphone and a new smartwatch. We already covered the GBuddy Smart “Life” Watch which actually looks good and we hope we get to review. However, this post is for the new Gionee F9 Plus smartphone.

When it comes to design, the Gionee F9 Plus isn’t unique. It has a U-shaped notch, a bit of chin with the manufacturer’s name on it, and dual cameras on the rear. The back has a glossy finish and the phone is available in black and blue.

The F9 Plus packs a 6.26-inch HD+ (1520 x 720) Full View Dewdrop Notch Display that is covered with Dragontrail Glass and has a 19:9 aspect ratio. Inside the notch is a 13MP F2.0 AI camera with support for Face Unlock. Gionee also added a pretty nifty trick to the notch; allowing it to serve as a battery meter.

The phone is powered by a 1.65GHz octa-core processor that is paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Gionee has added a triple card tray which has space for 2 Nano SIMs and a MicroSD card (256GB max.).

The back is home to a 13MP F1.8 and 2MP F2.4 dual camera setup and a fingerprint scanner. The cameras are on the left and share the same housing with the LED flash. There is bokeh mode, night mode, and a beauty mode. You can also use the fingerprint scanner as a shutter button when taking selfies.

Inside the phone is a 4050mAh battery but there is no mention of fast charging. The Gionee F9 Plus runs Android 9 Pie out of the box but there is no mention of the skin on top. It has a MicroUSB port and an audio jack. There is also Dual VoLTE, 2.4GHz WiFi, and A-GPS.

The Gionee F9 Plus is priced at INR 7,690 (~$108) which pits it directly against the Redmi 7 which is priced at INR 7,499 for the base model with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Gionee India says it will be available at retail partner stores and online stores but didn’t specify when.

Last year, it was reported Gionee had gone bankrupt. It’s problems first began when it laid off a large percentage of its staff in 2017 and was reported to be deep in debts. The company has not officially thrown in the towel as its Indian arm still launched a phone in February but it appears Gionee has indeed come to its end.

It has been reported that the official Gionee China website is down. We checked and the site seems to have been taken down. The plausible explanation is that Gionee has shut down its business in China. The Gionee India site is still up but we don’t know for how long before it gets taken down too.

Reports say Gionee’s problems are as a result of its owner’s gambling problems which led to unsettled debts and its eventual bankruptcy.

A few days ago, we reported that Gionee had a product launch scheduled for today in India. Surprisingly, the Chinese-based manufacturer actually announced two new phones for the Indian market. The two phones are the Gionee S11 Lite and the Gionee F205 which were already announced in China last November.

Gionee S11 Lite

The Gionee S11 Lite is similar to the Gionee F6 in China but with a few upgraded specs. It has the same curved and reflective rear design as the other S11 siblings but with less-powerful specs.

The S11 Lite packs a 5.7” 1440 x 720 FullView display with Gorilla Glass protection, a Snapdragon 430 processor, and 4GB of RAM. There is 32GB of built-in storage and a MicroSD card slot for up to an additional 128GB.

For optics, the Gionee  S11 Lite has a 13MP + 2MP combo on the rear. They are positioned at the top left corner in a horizontal position. The front camera is a single 16MP sensor, an upgrade from the 8MP on the Gionee F6. It can shoot portrait photos and also has a beauty mode.

Gionee is shipping the phone with Android Nougat out of the box with no news of an update yet. It has a 3030mAh battery, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and support for Face Unlock.

The Gionee S11 Lite is priced at Rs. 13,999 (~$210) and will be available at the end of May.

Gionee F205

The Gionee F205 is an entry-level smartphone that also has a FullView display. Its screen is 5.45” and has a 1440 x 720 resolution and under its metal body is 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage and a MT6739 processor.

The phone has an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie camera. It doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner but it has Face Unlock. There is also a 2670mAh battery for juice and a dedicated microSD card slot.

It runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat and has features like Private Space 2.0, support for up to 3 Whatsapp accounts, app lock, and app clone.

It will sell for Rs. 8,999 (~$135) and will be available starting today.

Gionee has been under the radar since last year. The last we heard of the Chinese manufacturer is that it was laying off its workers and has unsettled debts. It appears things have gotten better as the manufacturer has announced an event for April 26.

Gionee took to its official Twitter page to announce that it will launch a new product in India on Thursday. The teaser image shows the outline of the upper part of a phone. From the image, we can tell it will come with an 18:9 display which Gionee has termed FullView.

We have an idea of the product that may be unveiled at the event and it is one that you are already familiar with. Our guess is the Gionee S11.

Back in December, it was reported that the Gionee S11 would be available in India in January 2018. Unfortunately, it wasn’t announced. If things are back on track for the company, then there is nothing stopping them from launching the phone now.

The Gionee S11 has a 5.99” FHD+ FullView display. It is powered by an Helio P23 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

The selling point of the S11 is its dual front and rear cameras. The front cameras are  16MP and 8MP sensors while the rear cameras are a 16MP + 5MP duo. It has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, runs Android 7.1 Nougat, and a 3,410mAh battery.

However, Gionee is also reported to be working on a new phone with an in-display fingerprint scanner. We will be surprised if this is the phone that launches on Thursday.

The official Gionee India Twitter page also released a new teaser today. This one is not for a phone but probably new brand ambassadors judging from the image and the Gioneesuperheroes hashtag.

Gionee, a China-based smartphone company had collaborated with JCDecaux for the promotion of the brand new launch of Gionee Elife S5.5. The phone has been publicized as the world’s slimmest smartphone. The outdoor campaign is focusing on the Capital of India, Delhi. The campaign has started a few months back in July. The campaign is going on at the Delhi’s two top locations, i.e., at Dhaula Kuan Metro Station and Shivaji Stadium Metro Station. Both the locations are on the Airport Express Line. This Airpost Express Line is handled by JCDecaux. The promotions or the outdoor display on glass facades has an idea of capturing the youth urban population of Delhi.

The Head of Gionee India, Mr Arvind Vohra has avowed about the success of the campaign. He also confirmed that this has been a fruitful venture for both the partners. The campaign has main focus on revealing the design of the smartphone.

The campaign of Gionee Elife S5.5 concentrates on the claim of phone as the world’s slimmest smartphone. The hashtag, #morethanslim, has grabbed the attention of customers. The outdoor campaign at Dhaula Kuan façade fetches the attention of traffic going from Central to West Delhi, Airport and NCR Gurgaon. The Shivaji Stadium promotion on the other hand grasps the glance of crowd at Connaught Place area.

The Managing Director of JCDecaux India, Olivier Heroguelle, stated that this campaign is an effort in the direction of audience and brand closeness. The company believes in transparency and maximum visibility to the audience. He expressed his pleasure on working with this Chinese giant.
