The report shows that a total estimate of 98.3 million<a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/smart-tv"> smart TVs</a> was shipped in the first half of the year 2021. This shows the market grew by 6.8% year on year.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/global-tv-shipment.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-404736" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/global-tv-shipment.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="600" height="337" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/global-tv-shipment.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/global-tv-shipment-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>The report also reveals an impressive shift by consumers towards OLED TVs as an estimated 2.7 million OLED TVs were shipped during this period representing a year-on-year increase of 133.3%. This is an impressive trend that is made possible as more Chinese display makers perfect their OLED production skills.</p>
<p>In terms of individual brands, Samsung ranked first with an estimated shipment of 20.8 million units, an increase of 11.9% Year-on-Year. This year makes it the 15th consecutive year <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/25/samsung-lead-global-tv-market-15th-consecutive-year/#">Samsung has led the global smart TV market</a>. Rival Korean electronics giant LG comes in second place with an estimated shipment of 13.1 million units. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/global-tv-shipment-2.jpg?x96852"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-404737" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/global-tv-shipment-2.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="600" height="299" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/global-tv-shipment-2.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/global-tv-shipment-2-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/global-tv-shipment-2-324x160.jpg 324w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Chinese electronics company TCL recorded a surge in its shipment, peaking at 11.1 million units in the first six months of this year. TCL not only ranked in third place but also emerged as the number one Chinese smart TV manufacturer. TCL&#8217;s shipment represents a year-on-year increase of 13.6%.</p>
<p>Hisense shipped an estimated 8.4 million units which represents a year-on-year increase of 5.5% to occupy the number 4 spot. Xiaomi completes the top 5 with an estimated shipment of 5.4 million units. The rest of the top 10 spots is occupied by Sony, Vizio, Philips+AOC, Skyworth, and Sharp respectively.</p>

<p>As per a <a href="https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&amp;id=1614155663" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>FlatPanelsHD</em> </a>report, the South Korean tech giant recorded its lead 15 years in a row last year. In the global TV segment, it achieved a market share of 31.9 percent in terms of sales revenue in 2020. This marks a modest rise from 30.9 percent from the year prior. Unfortunately, the exact sales unit figures were not provided in the report. For those unaware, the company became the TV market leader back in 2006, when it launched the &#8216;Bordeaux&#8217;-designed LCD TVs.</p>
<p>Since then, Samsung has led the market thanks to its heavy investments and marketing in the segment. Furthermore, another South Korean firm arrived second as LG held a market share of 16.5 percent. On the other hand, Sony arrived third with a global market share of 9.1 percent. In other words, South Korean TV manufacturers alone accounted for nearly 50 percent of the entire TV market last year.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-297857 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/663_778_1914.jpg?x96852" alt="Samsung 8K QLED TV" width="600" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/663_778_1914.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/663_778_1914-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>According to Omdia, the company sold 7.79 million QLED LCD TVs last year, while LG sold just 2.04 million OLED TVs. Interestingly, Samsung saw great performance in both the higher and lower end markets. Meaning, its popularity was even across multiple segments, especially in the premium segment where it held a 50.8 percent market share for TV sizes 80 inch or larger TVs.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-362520 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/6y89bkjUduYKFcbYg8QojS.jpeg?x96852" alt="MiniLED TV" width="2000" height="1125" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/6y89bkjUduYKFcbYg8QojS.jpeg 2000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/6y89bkjUduYKFcbYg8QojS-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/6y89bkjUduYKFcbYg8QojS-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/6y89bkjUduYKFcbYg8QojS-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/6y89bkjUduYKFcbYg8QojS-696x392.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/6y89bkjUduYKFcbYg8QojS-1068x601.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/6y89bkjUduYKFcbYg8QojS-747x420.jpeg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/6y89bkjUduYKFcbYg8QojS-1920x1080.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px" /></p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=2203" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em></a>, a UBI Research report found that China&#8217;s TCL will lead the development of MiniLED TVs, although, the market will be led by industry giants like Samsung and LG. The report also adds that after 2024, MiniLED TVs would have essentially overtaken the OLED TVs in terms of market share. For those unaware, MiniLED TVs is an LCD (liquid crystal display) panel that uses micrometer sized LEDs as the backlighting alongside the addition of a quantum dot film.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/19/snapdragon-870-5g-official-details-leaked-oneplus-oppo-xiaomi-and-more-will-launch-phones-powered-by-it/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">[Update: Official] Snapdragon 870 5G official details leaked; OnePlus, OPPO, Xiaomi and more will launch phones powered by it</a></strong></h6>
<p>This leads to an increase in the color gamut range, along with dynamic range advantages as well, in comparison to traditional LCD TVs that are currently available in the market. These TVs can also have up to 3000 local dimming zones, which increases the overall contrast ratio of the panel while also reducing the halo effect. As per the UBI Research report, MiniLED display needs to have as many local dimming zones as the number of pixels to match OLED panel&#8217;s performance. However, the size reduction of the LEDs will only allow for 1000 to 3000 dimming zones.</p>
<p>The report also believes that within this year, around 2.5 million MiniLED TVs will be shipped. Notably, the technology behind this technology is expensive with each MiniLED backlight costing anywhere between 250 to 1,100 US Dollars for a 65 inch panel. Meaning, an average MiniLED TV can cost anywhere between 1,500 to 6,000 US Dollars, depending on the size and the number of dimming zones offered by a company as well.</p>

<p>According to a TrendForce report (Via <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=2157" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em></a>), 2021 will see a 2.8 percent high TV shipments in comparison to last year. The major reasons for the growth of the market are being attributed to the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic and major sporting events like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tokyo-2020-olympics/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tokyo Olympics</a>. For those unaware, TV shipments faced a notable decline early on in the previous year due to the initial outbreak. Although, the industry made a slight recovery in the latter half of the same year.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/12/oppo-enco-x-noise-canceling-launch-india-jan-18/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OPPO Enco X TWS Noise Canceling earphones to launch in India on January 18</a></strong></h6>
<p>In 2020, about 217 million TVs were shipped across the globe, marking a decline of 0.3 percent from back in 2019. Furthermore, a few TV makers also had to push back the shipments of their offerings due to the shortages of chip supply in the fourth and final quarter of last year. However, TV shipments are expected to grow in 2021, with large sized TVs expected to grow even high this year.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-364004 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/First-Look-PR_DL4_Neo-QLED.jpg?x96852" alt="2021" width="1645" height="975" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/First-Look-PR_DL4_Neo-QLED.jpg 1645w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/First-Look-PR_DL4_Neo-QLED-300x178.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/First-Look-PR_DL4_Neo-QLED-768x455.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/First-Look-PR_DL4_Neo-QLED-1024x607.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/First-Look-PR_DL4_Neo-QLED-696x413.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/First-Look-PR_DL4_Neo-QLED-1068x633.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/First-Look-PR_DL4_Neo-QLED-709x420.jpg 709w" sizes="(max-width: 1645px) 100vw, 1645px" /></p>
<p>Due to panel prices increasing and profitability per TV declining, TV manufacturers would turn towards large sized TVs, which would offer higher margins and better profits as well. The decrease in profitability affects TVs between the 32 inch and 55 inch models. Notably, shipments for 65 inch TVs grew by 23.4 percent year on year in the second half of 2020, while TVs over 70 inch saw a significant growth of 47.8 percent during the same period. TrendForce predicts that 65 inch or larger TVs will again see a rise of about 30 percent this year as well.</p>

<p>According to a Deloitte report (Via <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=2121" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em></a>), the market share of 8K TVs across the globe is increasing in the premium TV segment. These include TVs that are on an average worth over 2,500 US Dollars, although, the sales price are continuing to drop as well. As per the report, around a million 8K TVs around the price of 3,300 US Dollars are expected to be sold this year, marking sales worth 3.3 billion US Dollars.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-323378 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Samsung-Q950TS-8K-QLED-TV_CES-2020_1-scaled.jpg?x96852" alt="8K TV" width="2560" height="1440" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Samsung-Q950TS-8K-QLED-TV_CES-2020_1-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Samsung-Q950TS-8K-QLED-TV_CES-2020_1-scaled-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Samsung-Q950TS-8K-QLED-TV_CES-2020_1-scaled-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Samsung-Q950TS-8K-QLED-TV_CES-2020_1-scaled-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Samsung-Q950TS-8K-QLED-TV_CES-2020_1-scaled-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Samsung-Q950TS-8K-QLED-TV_CES-2020_1-scaled-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Samsung-Q950TS-8K-QLED-TV_CES-2020_1-scaled-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Samsung-Q950TS-8K-QLED-TV_CES-2020_1-scaled-1920x1080.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></p>
<p>Despite the sale of these high resolution televisions being slow, their demand is also steadily growing in the premium segments. At the moment, about 220 million units of Tvs are sold per year, out of which a million only accounts for around 0.5 percent of the total shipments. Back when 4K TVs launched back in 2013, companies suffered from issues with mass exposure due to the lack of content supporting the high resolution.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/06/iphone-12-strong-sales-12-mini-disappoint-apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">iPhone 12 series sees strong sales, but iPhone 12 mini might have ‘disappointed Apple’</a></strong></h6>
<p>However, Deloitte believes that the 8K TVs might not face the same issue as remastered analog and digital content that have enabled users to enjoy content in 8K. An example being Japan&#8217;s NHK showcasing a remastered version of the classic 2001: Space Odyssey in 8K back in 2018. Furthermore, most IMAX films that were filmed in 65 to 75mm can also be supported in 8K, while more and more movies and series are being filmed in high resolutions like 8K.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-273300 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/sharp-8k-tv-2.jpg?x96852" alt="Sharp 8K TV" width="600" height="423" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/sharp-8k-tv-2.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/sharp-8k-tv-2-300x212.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/sharp-8k-tv-2-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/sharp-8k-tv-2-596x420.jpg 596w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>Notably, another aspect that is key to the growth of the high resolution panels is the difference in price between 4K and 8K TVs. Deloitte also believes that by 2022 users would be able to choose between multiple TV sizes over 65 inch as well, with 55 inch being one of the most popular options for 8K TVs, with projected shipments crossing 150 million units.</p>

<p>According to <a href="http://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=2054" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>TheElec</em> </a>report, market research from Omdia has projected that the TV industry will see a rise in shipments in 2021. Notably, the launch of the game consoles from Sony and Microsoft marks the second time both companies have launched a console within the same year. Back when the previous generation was released, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/playstation-4/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">PlayStation 4</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xbox-one/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xbox One</a> were both launched in November 2013. Their launch led to a 32 percent rise in console shipment in the following year and a 5 percent increase in TV shipments as well, as per Omdia.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-327434 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Poll-of-The-Week-PlayStation-5-versus-Xbox-Series-X.jpg?x96852" alt="PlayStation 5" width="720" height="417" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Poll-of-The-Week-PlayStation-5-versus-Xbox-Series-X.jpg 720w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Poll-of-The-Week-PlayStation-5-versus-Xbox-Series-X-300x174.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Poll-of-The-Week-PlayStation-5-versus-Xbox-Series-X-696x403.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></p>
<p>Hence, the market research assumes that a similar rise can be expected in 2021. Furthermore, TV manufacturers (eg: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">LG</a>) that take advantage of the newer console generation&#8217;s improved hardware like offering 8K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate would likely see increased sales as well. Before the 2013 launch of both consoles, TV shipments were falling. So, Omdia expects a positive outlook for 2021&#8217;s shipments. The market research report expects that both consoles will see a rise in shipments of more than 31 percent next year, in comparison to this year.</p>

A report from Digitimes says China will soon outrun everyone else in the Global<a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lcd-panel-production"> LCD panel production</a> capacity.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-298356" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/BOE.jpg?x96852" alt="" width="705" height="470" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/BOE.jpg 705w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/BOE-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/BOE-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/BOE-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px" /></p>
<p>Digitimes&#8217; report says <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/China">China</a> will soon hold 70% of Global LCD panels production capacity. This is a huge 10% jump from the current 60% says the report citing industry sources. The report adds that China&#8217;s <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/BOE">BOE Technology</a> and  China Star Optoelectronics Technology (<a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/CSOT">CSOT</a>) were the frontrunners in 2020. Companies like  Innolux, Chongqing HKC, Samsung Display, LG Display. And AU Optronics (AUO) are behind them on the list.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the production of LCD will <a href="https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20201027PD212.html">reportedly</a> take the center stage more in China next year. This is after the acquisition of new fabs by BOE, and CSOT. If we recall, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/28/boe-acquires-cec-panda-lcd-strengthens-display-tech/">BOE acquired two fabs</a>&#8211; 8.5G, and 8.6G from CEC-Panda LCD Technology as the latter suffered heavy loss. The move, which is to strengthen its already dominant LCD technology portfolio, will likely make it hold 28% of the World&#8217;s Large-sized panel capacity.</p>
<p>On the other hand, CSOT bought an 8.5 fab from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-display">Samsung Display</a> as the company is withdrawing its LCD segment from China as a whole. That said, BOE has a combined production capacity of 12.71 million SqKms compared to CSOT&#8217;s 8.58 million Sqkms. Having said that, both of them were the only ones out of six sitting in <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/06/boe-leads-csot-lcd-panel-production/">Top two for the LCD-panel supplier&#8217;s list</a> and witnessing growth in H1 2020.</p>
<p>Accordingly, the TV market also witnesses a boom in Global TV shipments with an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/10/samsung-tops-the-global-tv-shipments-for-q3-2020-tcl-gains-a-massive-52-7-yoy-increase/">improvement of 12% YoY</a> inQ3 2020 from 2019. For North America(NA), the growth rate is about 20% YoY between January-August 2020. Demand for edutainment systems across the globe during the pandemic is the main reason for the fight back. Samsung tops the overall shipment of TVs globally and LG, TCL, HiSense, and Xiaomi complete the list.</p>
<p>Among them, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/TCL">TCL</a> has the most interesting growth of 29% QoQ. And a whopping 57% YoY increase, shipping 7.33 million units totally in NA.</p>

This makes it gain a 38% rise QoQ (Quater on Quarter), and an improved 12% YoY (Year on Year). In Countries like North America, the growth is 20% YoY between January-August, 2020. And companies like Samsung, LG, TCL reportedly reaped benefits out of the pandemic. Amongst them, TCL saw the biggest leap with a whopping 57% YoY increase, shipping 7.33 million units totally in Q3 2020. The report says because of the longer quarantine period, TCL&#8217;s altered strategy of using in-house panels, aggressive pricing helped it.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/05/india-tv-manufacturing-import-duty/">India imposes 5% import duty on key components for TV manufacturing</a></strong></p>
<p>However, Samsung leads the Global TV shipments with 14.3 million units in Q3. This is more than double the shipments it did in the last quarter. LG is surprisingly in second place though it recorded the least YoY growth. HiSense and Xiaomi from China capture the rest of the places behind TCL which sits at 3rd overall. That said, the report says that if demand continues to rise in Q4, the shipments will increase by another 4% to 64.53 million units.</p>

<p>And total TV shipments in 2020 will stand at 216.09 million units, which will be a 0.8% decrease YoY compared to 2019 if the situation turns out the way TrendForce predicts. Also, it&#8217;s obvious that the slump in percentage is due to various factors including the Global pandemic. Nonetheless, a drop of less than 1% will be an impressive comeback.</p>
<p>However, there is a caveat. As per the report, prices of TV panels rose 50% QoQ for 32-inch HD panels and 41% for 55-inch UHD panels in Q3. Although companies reportedly swallowed the profits to reach the shipment targets, they will have to adapt to the price hikes in Q4. That is to ensure they get steady supply from manufacturers as it could rise 15-20% more for both 32 &amp; 55-inches.</p>
