Google is reportedly preparing to launch a new fitness wearable called the Google Fitbit Air. The device is expected to be a screenless fitness tracker designed for users who prefer a simple and distraction-free experience. The “Air” branding suggests a lightweight and comfortable design that can be worn all day without feeling bulky.

Early Sightings and Teasers

The device first appeared in teasers from late March 2026, but it gained wider attention after NBA star Stephen Curry was spotted wearing it for months. In early teaser content, only Google’s “G” logo was visible instead of Fitbit branding. This hints at a shift in how Google is presenting its wearable products.

Google’s Big Health Rebranding

Alongside the new device, Google is expected to rework its health ecosystem. Fitbit Premium may be renamed to Google Health, while the Personal Health Coach service could become Google Health Coach. This signals a move toward bringing all health services under the Google brand, with Fitbit focusing more on hardware.

Focus on Fitness and Competition

The Fitbit Air is likely to compete with screenless fitness trackers like WHOOP. These devices focus on continuous health tracking without a display, making them popular among athletes and fitness-focused users who want deeper insights without distractions.

Expected Launch Timeline

There is no confirmed launch date yet, but the announcement is expected soon. Reports suggest it could debut at Google I/O in the coming weeks, marking a major step in Google’s wearable strategy.

Google has released an update to a limited number of Pixel 6 series devices, bringing the heart rate and respiratory tracking feature to the Google Fit app.

This feature which is present in Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a since march is now being tested for the Pixel 6 series in a limited release.

As the Pixel 6 series does not have dedicated sensors for measuring heart rate and respiratory rate, the feature works using the phone’s cameras. Checking your heart rate with this feature is as simple as placing your finger on the rear camera and waiting a few seconds as the app detects changes in the color of your finger and produces a reading that can be saved to your google fit account.

The process is pretty simple, with on-screen guides correcting you if you place your finger in the wrong place or a pop-up advising you to move to a place with better lighting if you are in a poorly lit environment.

The delayed inclusion of this feature in the Pixel 6 series can be accredited to the new style in which the camera module is set up, placing the primary lens and flash pretty far apart. This design causes a problem, as the feature also utilized the LED flash in the previous generations to take a more accurate reading in low-light environments.

On the other hand, the respiratory tracking feature works by propping up your device with the front camera facing your upper torso to record your chest movements when you breathe.

It was also observed by 9to5Google that “This early access capability is not particularly optimized, with an old Pixel 5-era graphic appears and mentions of being able to turn on the flash in error dialogs.”

It is still too early to tell if this feature will remain in the Pixel 6 as Google warns that tracking your respiratory rate and measuring heart rate “using just your phone” is “being fine-tuned and may be removed.”

Last November, Google announced that it will be acquiring Fitbit for $2.1 billion. The acquisition is yet to complete but the search giant has already patented a design for a fitness tracker. Like any other patent, it is not sure if this will ever end up as a consumer product.

According to 91Mobiles, Google filed this design patent with the United States Patents and Trademarks Office (USPTO). The documentation with a  number of design sketches mentions it to be a “wristband for tracking fitness”.

Looking at the sketches, we can notice that this fitness tracker is somewhat similar to the recently launched Amazon Halo. In other words, it does not feature a screen, and therefore, wearers will have to rely on their connected smartphone to known the readings.

Further, the strap of this wearable seems to be fitted with the tracker itself. If that is the case, then customers will have to buy a new unit if they want a different color. This suggests that this fitness tracker could be a part of a subscription service just like Amazon Halo.

That said, although the documents do not say anything about this product’s specs, we think that it will use a magnetic charger since there are pogo pins near a sensor that appears to be for heart-rate monitoring.

Anyway, if Google is ever to release a such wearable, we expect to learn about it before its official announcement via leaks and certifications.
