<p>For many years, a large number of doctors have written their medication prescriptions so quickly that it can be difficult for patients to understand what they have written. This has been a problem despite efforts by tech companies to find a solution. Google is now trying to address this issue by collaborating with pharmacists to create a way to decipher doctors&#8217; handwriting.</p>

<h3><strong>Google collaborates with pharmacists to address doctors handwriting problem on medical prescriptions</strong></h3>

<p>Google is reportedly testing a new app that aims to reduce the number of errors caused by doctors&#8217; handwriting on medical prescriptions. According to TechCrunch, the app, which is currently in the research prototype stage, allows users to take a photo of a prescription or upload it from their photo library. The app then processes the image and highlights the medications written on the prescription.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="654" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/googles-new-app-aims-to-decipher-doctors-handwriting.webp?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-503872" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/googles-new-app-aims-to-decipher-doctors-handwriting.webp 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/googles-new-app-aims-to-decipher-doctors-handwriting-300x196.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/googles-new-app-aims-to-decipher-doctors-handwriting-768x502.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/googles-new-app-aims-to-decipher-doctors-handwriting-696x455.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/googles-new-app-aims-to-decipher-doctors-handwriting-642x420.webp 642w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/googles-new-app-aims-to-decipher-doctors-handwriting-741x486.webp 741w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption>A Google executive in India details company’s new AI features. <strong>Image Credits:</strong> Google</figcaption></figure>

<p>The app is intended to be used as an assistive technology for pharmacists, rather than replacing their judgement. A Google executive demonstrated the technology at the company&#8217;s annual Google for India conference, but no decision has yet been made about whether to launch the app.</p>

<p>Poor handwriting on medical prescriptions can lead to serious pharmaceutical errors and even accidental deaths. A report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) estimates that 1.5 million injuries occur each year as a result of pharmacists and healthcare workers misreading sloppy handwriting. Some states in the US have implemented electronic prescribing systems in an effort to reduce these errors.</p>

<p>If successful, the app developed by Google could be a valuable tool in reducing the number of injuries caused by poor handwriting on medical prescriptions. It could potentially be used by patients and healthcare professionals around the world, not just in India.</p>

The exciting new feature is available on the Google Lens Screenshot UI for devices running Android 11+. The translate button will become visible on the screenshot, and a click on it will detect and translate the required text quickly.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-386424" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens.png?x10805" alt="Google Lens" width="748" height="486" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens.png 748w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-300x195.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-696x452.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-646x420.png 646w" sizes="(max-width: 748px) 100vw, 748px" /></a></p>
<p>Google continues to release innovations that are bound to help it maintain its edge among its competitors. In addition to translating the text, you can also copy the text on the screenshot, which can then be downloaded for offline access or shared on the Google Translate app or social networks like Twitter or Instagram. Users can also download the current language for offline access and can also swiftly send the screenshot to the full Google Translate app.</p>
<p>There is no indication whether the new Google Lens Screenshot translate feature would also be available in Android 10 or lower, but we expect it to be present in Android 12 devices. The feature has been integrated with the web version for greater functionality.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-3.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-386426" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-3.png?x10805" alt="Google Lens" width="751" height="536" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-3.png 751w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-3-300x214.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-3-100x70.png 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-3-696x497.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/google-lens-3-588x420.png 588w" sizes="(max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px" /></a></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Google-Lens/">Google Lens</a> was first unveiled at Google I/O 2017. It is an image recognition tool that was first integrated with Google Assistant on Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. It was later in 2018 integrated with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Google-Photos/">Google Photos</a> for both Pixels and other Android devices. The app was released as a standalone app on the Play Store in June 2018 and as of January this year, the app had recorded <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/20/google-lens-over-500-million-downloads-installs-play-store/">over 500 million downloads</a>.</p>

<p>First reported by <a href="https://9to5google.com/2021/01/25/google-lens-translate-offline/">9to5Google</a>(via <a href="https://www.xda-developers.com/google-lens-android-can-now-translate-text-while-offline/">XDA</a>), the Offline Translation support of <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-lens">Google Lens</a> is rolling out to <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android">Android</a> users. This update, being a server-side one, might take a few days to reach everyone. Either way, to avail the offline translation, users first need to simply open the Google Lens App.</p>
<p>Then choose the &#8220;Translate&#8221; option and Select the Language menu that appears at the top. Here, unlike before, a Download icon will appear beside the language that is available. As you press it, the package file will get downloaded onto your device.</p>

<p>After this, you can use the feature offline, i.e, without Internet connectivity. It&#8217;s worth noting that the offline translation works equally well as the online mode. I checked it myself and found that on pointing to an image, the results show up almost instantly.</p>
<p>As you can see above, a preview of the images with the &#8216;offline&#8217; tag below will appear in the results. You can always tap on the tick mark of the language to remove the package if you don&#8217;t like it.</p>
<p>Google has been updating the Google lens application with a lot of features since its inception. Some of the prominent ones include <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/08/google-lens-handwritten-notes-copy-paste/">recognizing handwritten texts</a>, copy the scanned text, solve maths and science questions, and more.</p>
<p>As a result of this, it gained immense popularity, and opening it to other Android devices made it reach <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/20/google-lens-over-500-million-downloads-installs-play-store/">500 million downloads</a> on the Play Store recently.</p>

At around the same time, Google’s partner OEMs began to integrated Google Lens into their smartphones’ camera app.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">Only after that, Google Lens debuted as a standalone app on Google Play Store. In fact, it comes pre-installed on most devices as part of </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Google"><span style="font-weight: 400">Google </span></a><span style="font-weight: 400">apps package. The app has improved a lot over the years with new features. Currently, the search giant is rolling out a server-side update enabling image support for its built-in clipboard. This update also replaces Google Search with Google Lens for some users.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">GBoard comes with a number of useful tools like Google Translate, clipboard, GIF search, and more. Until now, the clipboard could only support texts but with the latest server-side update on Gboard version 9.5.11 or above, users can also copy/paste images.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">With this new addition, users can copy images from the web and paste them in the text area of supported apps to share them. Normally, one has to first download the image and then share but not anymore if they are using GBoard and Google Chrome.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">To use this feature, users will have to first enable the “Copy Image” flag from chrome://flags. Then, simply tap their desired image from the web and select copy. This action will add the copied image to GBoard’s built-in clipboard.</span></p>

<p>There are lots of apps on the Play Store and App Store that helps in scanning handwritten text. But getting this functionality without installing any third-party app is a boon for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Android/">Android</a> users. However, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iOS">iOS</a> users will have to install Google App.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-321622 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Google-Lens-Handwriting-Copy-Paste.gif?x10805" alt="Google Lens Handwriting Copy Paste" width="550" height="550" /></p>
<p>The new copy-paste feature can help users copy their handwritten notes and paste it in their phone or even on a computer. All they need is the updated Google App on their smartphones and the latest Google Chrome on their computers.</p>
<p>To use this feature, users will have to access <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Google-Lens">Google Lens</a> on their smartphones first. Android users can do it by installing the standalone Google Lens app, in addition to updating the Google App. They can even access it by provoking <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Google-Assistant">Google Assistant</a>. Whereas, iOS users can only access it through the Google App.</p>
<p>Then, point smartphone’s camera to their desired handwritten notes, highlight it and copy. The data can be now pasted in the phone as well as in Google Docs by accessing it on Chrome on a computer. Do note that same account should be signed in on both Google app on smartphone and Google Chrome on computer.</p>
<p>Anyway, the text prediction will depend on how legible the user’s handwriting is to Google’s AI algorithm.</p>

Compared to last year’s Google Pixel phones, their successor models are expected to come with some exciting new features such as full screen display (only for Pixel XL 2), Always-On Display, Active Edge, USB-C port for connectivity for connecting earphones. One new feature that will be arriving on the Google Pixel 2 duo is Google Lens.</p>
<p>In the past week, <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Google</a> had released a new edition of Google Photos. On performing the APK teardown of the app, developers were able to find that it is integrated with completely functional Google Lens. However, it seems that Google has now blocked the access it to Google Lens as it is no longer working. Even though it is not accessible now, the killer feature may become available with the launch of Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2.</p>
<p>Google Lens is a feature that can enable Google Pixel 2 phone users to   take advantage of the machine learning technology to show relevant and contextual information by recognizing the various objects that can be seen through the viewfinder. For example, by pointing the smartphone’s camera at a restaurant, users can view relevant information like description, timing, reviews and so on.</p>
<p>If Google Lens is unable to find information, it will be able to find relevant information through Google’s search engine. During the Google I/O 2017, the company had showcased the prowess of Google Lens.</p>

This year was no exception, with the Google I/O 2017 kicking off with some interesting product announcements and updates. Many of the new tech revealed at the event affect us in our day to day life which means it&#8217;s worth checking out what&#8217;s new from the company. The company seems to have heavily worked on visual recognition and features in 2017 and we can clearly see the advancement in this department in the tech mentioned below.</p>
<p>So, here are some of the key Google I/O 2017 Highlights:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>1. Smarter Machine Vision</strong></h3>
<p>Google&#8217;s Computer Vision AI has become smarter and the camera app itself could get some really cool features such as removing obstacles from the pictures captured on the screen. Using the additional information, the AI can do a lot of things, like automatically make a dull and noisy low-light image clearer. The teaser shown at the event revealed the AI removing the entire fence from the frame to keep the girl playing baseball intact in the image.</p>
<p>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-before.png?x10805'><img width="696" height="392" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-before-1024x576.png?x10805" class="attachment-large size-large" alt="google vision ai baseball girl with fence before" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-before.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-before-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-before-768x432.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></a>
<a href='https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-after.png?x10805'><img width="696" height="392" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-after-1024x576.png?x10805" class="attachment-large size-large" alt="google vision ai baseball girl with fence after" loading="lazy" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-after.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-after-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-vision-ai-baseball-girl-with-fence-after-768x432.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px" /></a>
</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>2. Google Lens</strong></h3>
<p>Google Lens seems to be the next big thing in machine-based visual recognition. Google&#8217;s visual recognition tech has improved to such a great level that you can get a ton of features by just using the phone&#8217;s camera. All you have to do is just point at an object and the phone&#8217;s powerful AI will show you relevant content right inside the camera interface. For example, if you point at a restaurant, the Google Lens app will display its ratings right on the camera screen.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Google-Lens-feature.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-131962" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Google-Lens-feature.png?x10805" alt="Google-Lens-featured" width="640" height="301" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Google-Lens-feature.png 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Google-Lens-feature-300x141.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p>If you remember, this app kind of reminds me of the HERE City Lens app that we had on the earlier Nokia Lumia smartphones. It sure was cool back then and with the new tech, the Google Lens app will take things to a whole new level.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature-2.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-131963" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature-2.jpg?x10805" alt="google lens app feature 2" width="782" height="440" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature-2.jpg 782w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature-2-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 782px) 100vw, 782px" /></a></p>
<p>The Lens app can do a lot more, like connecting to the Wi-Fi network just by scanning the preset Wi-Fi settings on the router, or identifying a flower just by pointing the camera at it.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-131964" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature.png?x10805" alt="google lens app feature" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature-300x225.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature-768x576.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-lens-app-feature-160x120.png 160w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></p>
<p>Well, get ready to see a lot of people pointing their smartphones at random objects on the road soon.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>3. Google Assitant For iPhones</strong></h3>
<p>Move over Siri, Google Assistant is here to make you insecure. In just a year after launching the company&#8217;s personal assistant for Android phones, the Google Assistant is available to the iPhones via an app on the store. It brings familiar features as the Android version, but it&#8217;s not directly baked into the OS, which gives Siri a natural advantage.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-assistant-iphone.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-131959" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-assistant-iphone.jpg?x10805" alt="google-assistant-iphone" width="1024" height="522" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-assistant-iphone.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-assistant-iphone-300x153.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/google-assistant-iphone-768x392.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></p>
<p>Note that Google Assistant for iPhones isn&#8217;t a big deal as the assistant is now expanding to a lot more smart home products. Just watch out for the logo (yellow red green and blue dots) on the product to see if it has Google Assistant inside.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>4. Android O Enters Beta</strong></h3>
<p>Yes, after announcing the developer preview version back in April, the Android O Beta build is now available to beta testers. Unfortunately, you can become a beta tester only if you own a recent Nexus or Pixel device.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/android-o.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-131961" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/android-o.jpg?x10805" alt="android o" width="800" height="354" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/android-o.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/android-o-300x133.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/android-o-768x340.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></a></p>
<p>Battery life has always been the focus on new Android versions and the same applies to Android O. The new version aims to preserve device battery by limiting resource consumption by each app in the background. There are a lot of smart stuff being tailored in order for the background apps to reduce as much power consumption as possible.</p>
<p>Apart from improving the OS speed, what&#8217;s significantly improved is the boot time. For example, the Google Pixel with Android O would take less than half as much time as an Android Nougat running unit. Also, there are new things like picture-in-picture, notification dots etc to improve the user experience.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong>5. Android Go aka Android Lite</strong></h3>
<p>For a lot of current Android users, Android Go may not matter much, but for the billions of users that are still to jump onto Google&#8217;s mobile platform, especially from the developing markets where mobile phone specs are entry level to keep the price low, Android Go is a game changer.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/android-go-ss.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-131960" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/android-go-ss.png?x10805" alt="android go ss" width="761" height="453" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/android-go-ss.png 761w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/android-go-ss-300x179.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 761px) 100vw, 761px" /></a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s a slimmed down version of Android specifically targeted at super low-end smartphones. While I understand that the specifications of entry-level smartphones, even the ones that cost less than $100 have improved significantly, Android Go would probably benefit phones that are even cheaper! We are talking phones with less than 1GB of RAM and a super entry level chip. For them, Android Go would make sense since it uses less data, supports multiple languages and makes Android bearable for low-end hardware. Get ready for a set of Android Go supported Google apps to be highlighted on the play store. Each app is said to be under 10Mb.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Overall, the Google I/O had some really interesting tech announcements yesterday. What do you think?</p>
