The Google Pixel 7a is the latest entry in the Pixel 7 series and is the mid range model in the lineup. This device is the most affordable in the series thanks to certain corners that the company cutting corners to keep its cost low. But one of these areas apparently includes its chipset, which on paper, is the same processor featured on its higher end siblings. So let’s have a look.

Google Pixel 7a reportedly equipped with a custom Tensor G2 SoC

The news arrives from tipster Kamila (@Za_Raczke) who found that the Tensor G2 equipped on the Pixel 7a is a different variant than the base or Pro models. This chip version on the Pixel 7a might be an underpowered variant that might perform slightly worse. Despite carrying the Tensor G2 moniker, it appears that Google has developed a more affordable version of the chipset to further cut down on costs.

For those unaware, Samsung is the manufacturing partner for this chipset and even helped co-develop the original Tensor G2. Thanks to Samsung’s semiconductor expertise, the chip also features its FOPLP-PoP technology. However, the Tensor G2 on the Pixel 7a reportedly features a cheaper and slightly worse IPOP packing. This version is thicker, larger, and even produces more heat compared to the more advanced FOPLP. Unfortunately, we still have no idea what this means in term of actual performance in real world scenarios.

The new Tensor G2 chipset version is likely using this new IPOP package to save costs for Google. Although, this move might costs its users as the Pixel 7a could potentially run marginally slower than the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro and may have heating issues as well. Google’s latest mid-range Pixel 7a has undergone popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything grueling durability test. The smartphone was announced earlier this month. The one major difference between the latest offering and the premium Pixel 7 duo is that the former comes with a plastic body. However, the phone scores surprising results in the durability test.

The durability test starts with Zack using a razor blade to scratch the Pixel 7a’s display. Although the screen is shielded by Gorilla Glass 3, it produces scratches easily at level 6 and even more at level 7. In the scrape test, the smartphone’s metal frame also scratches easily. The metal volume rocker and power buttons are also removable. When the phone is subjected to a fire test, it withstands the flame for 25 seconds but it also quickly recovers.

The main highlight of the video is the Pixel 7a’s performance in the bend test. The phone holds its ground and refuses to bend even after putting an ample amount of pressure from both sides. What’s more surprising is that the device features a plastic body and Zack says that it’s still better than glass that can shatter into million pieces.

Google is gearing up to launch its highly anticipated Pixel 7a mid range smartphone and its first ever foldable device, the Pixel Fold. However, ahead of the official announcement a teardown video has revealed the complete internal design of the Pixel 7a and even showcases some of its key hardware. So let’s have a look.

The teardown was shared by PBKreviews who uploaded a video on YouTube. This video offers us a close look at the inner workings of the Pixel 7a model ahead of its official launch on 11th May 2023. Looking at the new video, we can see the device’s plastic rear panel being removed, offering us a look at the wireless charging coil, NFC antenna, and the cameras as well. Underneath this, we can even see the 4,385mAh battery pack that powers the device.

The front half of the device has a copper film to help dissipate heat inside the Pixel 7a. The front also houses a fingerprint scanner on the lower half, while the upper half houses the selfie camera and other necessary sensors like the proximity sensor. The graphite film can also be seen running all around the middle, which also serves the purpose of thermal management. On the rear, we can see dual camera setup on the upper region at the back.

It is no secret that Google is working on the Google Pixel 7a. The device is rumored to be packed with many improvements over the Pixel 6a, and could also carry a high refresh rate panel, the absence of which was a big gripe about the Pixel 6a.

Now, a new report, courtesy of Smartprix has appeared online revealing the renders of the Google Pixel 7a. Taking a look at the renders, we can see that it has the same camera visor with a dual camera cutout as the Pixel 7. Even the LED flash is in the same place as the Pixel 7’s. OnLeaks reveals that the dimensions of the device will be 152.4 x 72.9 x 9.0mm(10.1mm with the camera bump).

The device will have small bezels all around and a somewhat larger chin when it comes to the front screen. At the top-middle of the display, the device will have a punch-hole cutout for the front camera. On the right spine of the phone, you’ll find the power and volume rockers, and on the left spine, you’ll see the SIM tray.

The smartphone’s speaker grille and USB type-C port are both found on the bottom side. According to earlier rumors, the smartphone would have a 3.5mm jack. However, it does not appear on the renders, indicating that the rumors may not be entirely true. All things considered, it appears that the Pixel 7a will closely resemble the Pixel 7. According to rumors, the Samsung-developed FHD+ display for the Google Pixel 7a would have a refresh rate of 90Hz. The device’s back camera system might use IMX787 and IMX712 sensors. The smartphone will most likely enable wireless charging at 5W. Under the hood, the device might feature a Google Tensor chip, and there might also be an in-display fingerprint scanner for security.

The device is expected to get Bluetooth LE support, which will provide superior connectivity while being easy on the battery life. The device is currently expected to come in White and Dark Grey colors, and the official launch can be expected to happen in early 2023.

Google unveiled the Pixel 6a earlier this year with the same custom Tensor chipset and exclusive software features as the more expensive Pixels. The phone became quite popular among consumers due to its affordable price tag. Now, Amazon suggests the search giant might be gearing up to unveil the Pixel 7a soon. The e-commerce company is reportedly allowing users to subscribe for the upcoming announcement of the smartphone. Here are the details.

According to GSMArena, Amazon is letting users subscribe for the “Google Pixel 7a family launch announcement.” No details are provided on when the Pixel 7a will be revealed, but since the e-commerce giant is already handing out invitations, it shouldn’t take long.

However, we find it hard to believe that Google will unveil the 7a this early. The current Pixel 6a is only six months old, and if you recall, the company took months to introduce the device. Also, a recent report revealed that Google has ordered 4 million units of the “a” phone for launch early next year.

It’s worth noting that the event is for the “Google Pixel 7a Family,” meaning there are multiple variants of the smartphone. We don’t expect separate 5G/4G models because the Pixel 5a and 6a already have 5G. Chances are the company may bring the rumored Pixel 7 mini.
