Google Search has long been known for its quirky Easter eggs, and now, it’s tapped into the nostalgia of millions with a delightful Pokédex integration. By simply searching for any Pokémon name, users get access to a detailed information panel, effectively transforming Google Search into a handy digital Pokédex.

Google Search Pokédex Easter Egg

The integration of the Pokémon easter egg is seamless and intuitive. Just like a Pokédex, the information panel appears at the top of the search results, making it easy to access without navigating through multiple websites. The information offered also makes it appear similar to the classic Pokédex entries from the Pokémon games, offering a comprehensive overview for both casual fans and dedicated trainers.

Google Pokédex Easter Egg

The key stats revealed on the search include data like the Pokémon’s type, evolution stages, abilities, and even height and weight. This feature is particularly useful for quickly referencing Pokémon details during discussions, gameplay, or simply to satisfy a nostalgic curiosity. That’s not all, the feature is available for mobile users can also find a Poké Ball button that they can tap to catch that Pokémon. Those logged in can keep track of all the Pokémons that caught on their Google Pokédex.

In total, there are only the 151 original Pokémons available with this easter egg. Google has also added that there are Legendary and Mythical Pokémons as well that will require a Master Ball to capture. You can get these by earning points by catching regular Pokémons. So go catch them all and see what reward is in store for dedicated trainers.

Google always strives to provide the most intuitive features for its users to experience. In a recent announcement, the company revealed a range of new search updates designed to enhance user experiences across various domains. Among the highlights are advancements in skin disease identification, virtual try-on capabilities for clothing shopping, and a host of new features to enhance travel planning.

Users can try on clothes virtually on websites such as H&M, Everlane & Loft

Google Lens, an image recognition tool, now allows users to easily identify possible skin diseases. By simply pointing their smartphone camera at their skin or uploading photos, users can find visually similar images that aid in identifying potential skin abnormalities. This innovative feature also enables users to describe specific skin conditions, such as bumps on the lip or lines on the nail, providing valuable insights and information. This may even help users to self-diagnose basic conditions without paying a visit to the doctor at all.

Building upon its e-commerce capabilities, Google has introduced a simulated try-on function. Users can now filter and search for clothing items based on criteria like style, color, and pattern across various retailers. To assist users in making informed choices, Google’s virtual try-on tool utilizes generative artificial intelligence techniques. This feature is currently available for top purchases from select retailers like H&M, Everlane, Anthropologie, and Loft.

Google has always been ahead of innovation with Google Maps, and now, it introduces new updates to its travel portfolio. The Immersive View feature, which allows users to explore 3D models of cities, has expanded to include iconic destinations such as Florence, Venice, Dublin, and Amsterdam. Additionally, users can now enjoy close-up views of over 500 landmarks worldwide. This immersive experience adds depth and realism to virtual travel, complementing the existing city models of Tokyo and New York.

For iOS and Android users, Google has introduced an “at-a-glance” navigation feature. This convenient tool enables users to track their journey directly from the route overview or lock screen, providing estimated arrival times and directions for walking, biking, or driving. This streamlined navigation experience ensures users have easy access to essential travel information.

A proposed settlement between Google LLC and the plaintiffs involved in consolidated class action lawsuits has recently garnered attention. This settlement aims to address concerns surrounding the inclusion of Google Search queries in referrer headers and during the provision of certain Google services. If you used Google Search and clicked on a search link between October 25, 2006, and September 30, 2013, you may be eligible to participate in this settlement as a Settlement Class Member. In this article, we will explore the details of the settlement, its implications, and what it means for you as a Google user.

Users need to establish if they used Google Search between October 25, 2006 & September 30, 2013

The proposed settlement, while not an admission of wrongdoing by Google, seeks to resolve the legal claims brought forward in the Lawsuit. As part of the settlement, Google will pay $23 million to compensate Settlement Class Members who file Claims, as well as cover attorneys’ fees, litigation costs, and settlement administration expenses. Additionally, Google has committed to revising its “FAQs” and “Key Terms” webpages to provide clearer information regarding the disclosure of search queries to third parties via referrer headers.

It is crucial to understand the legal rights affected by this settlement, regardless of whether the public chooses to take action. This notice serves as a means to inform the public of the proposed settlement, rights, available benefits, and options. The notice has been authorized by Judge Edward J. Davila of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, who is overseeing this class action known as In re Google Referrer Header Privacy Litigation. The Plaintiffs, who sued Google LLC, are represented in this case, and the settlement is designed to benefit all Settlement Class Members.

To determine if you are a Settlement Class Member, you need to establish whether you used Google Search and clicked on a search result in the United States between October 25, 2006, and September 30, 2013. The Settlement Class also includes individuals who can bring claims on behalf of these users, such as representatives, heirs, administrators, and assigns. If you have any doubts about your eligibility or questions about the settlement, you can contact the Settlement Administrator through the provided contact page on the Settlement Website, www.RefererHeaderSettlement.com. The amount of compensation for each class member will depend on various factors, including the number of claims submitted and the costs associated with administering the settlement. As of now, each claimant is estimated to receive approximately $7.70 for an Approved Claim for American citizens only.

Google has been accused of profiting from misleading adverts that direct pregnant women to anti-abortion groups that offer false medical advice and pressure them to keep their pregnancies.

The Guardian reports that according to an investigation by the Observer, Google UK has been displaying adverts for crisis pregnancy centres (CPCs) run by anti-abortion organisations when users search for terms such as “NHS abortion advice”, “confidential abortion support” and “pregnant options”.

CPCs are unregulated clinics that often pose as neutral sources of information and counselling, but in reality, have a hidden agenda to dissuade women from accessing legal abortion services. Some of them have been found to use scare tactics, misinformation and emotional manipulation to influence women’s decisions.

The Guardian analysed 251 adverts shown by Google UK to a user searching 40 key phrases related to abortion in February 2023. Out of these, 117 adverts (47%) were for CPCs run by anti-abortion groups such as Life Charity in the country.

The report quotes Lisa Hallgarten, head of policy at young people’s sexual health charity Brook, who described the marketing approach as “clearly immoral” and said adverts provided to those searching terms such as “NHS abortion advice” could delay women’s access to healthcare.

“We are really concerned that people looking for impartial support are being directed to organisations and websites where they could experience the complete opposite,” she said. Pam Lowe, an expert on anti-abortion activism in the United Kingdom, said: “Anyone who puts ‘NHS abortion’ into Google should be shown a link to the NHS website as the first result. There’s a risk that people could end up with biased information.”

Google’s advertising policy states that it does not allow ads for products or services that are “deceptive” or “misleading”. It also states that it does not allow ads for healthcare services that are “unlawful” or “harmful”. However, Google has failed to enforce its own policy and remove these ads from its platform.

The report also points out that Google has a history of allowing anti-abortion groups to target pregnant women with misleading ads in other countries such as the United States, where CPCs are more widespread and influential in the conservative community.

Google’s failure to act on these ads has been criticised by pro-choice campaigners, medical experts and politicians who say that it is putting women’s health and rights at risk. They argue that Google is profiting from exploiting vulnerable women who are seeking reliable information on this sensitive issue.

The news arrives from Bryant Chappel of The Nerf Report, who shared the information on Twitter. Apparently, users will soon be able to launch a game on Stadia directly from the search results. Furthermore, this feature will also support Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce Now, and Amazon Luna as well. For those enrolled in the test, simply searching for a game on one of those platform will offer a Play button in the information panel.

A good example of the games that will be offered via the search result is Destiny 2 and Halo Infinite. Clicking on the play button will either start up the game or take the users to a landing page on the different streaming platform. This feature is currently being tested with a 9To5Google report noting that the search results can show if a game has timed trial on Stadia or if it is available for free as a part of its premium subscription.

Video streaming services like Netflix have already had this feature where the content being searched for is just a single click away from the search results. So, it arrives as no surprise that Google also plans on bringing this function for its own cloud gaming service as well as other platforms.

This outage had began on Monday night (8th August 2022), with a DownDetector finding a surge in number of complaints it received about the Google Search in the US. People using the Search service saw long leading times, empty results, and much more. Out of all the complaints raised, the vast majority of the issues were based on the Search service, while some were also facing issues on some of its other services as well. Furthermore, many people facing this issue took to Twitter to share their experiences with the #GoogleDown and #GoogleOutage tags.

Notably, certain people using the Search service received the “500” error, which basically implies a server problem. Thus, its other services were also affected, including YouTube, Photos, Maps, Drive, Duo, and more. Although, not every region saw these issues. As of right now, it appears that the Search Engine giant is still currently facing some problems, with some users still facing issues in their services sharing their experiences on Twitter. So stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

In the age of fake news, the company recently began a fact-checking mechanism for ascertaining the authenticity of search results. Fact-checking will further enhance the quality of information accessed via the search engine.

However, the fact-checking mechanism is not effective when swamped with breaking news, making it difficult to fact-check content and establish which is authentic. Under such a scenario when Google cannot guarantee the authenticity of a search item, it has been reported that Google will subsequently warn the user. An explanation will then follow the warning, stating that the topic you are searching for is new. An indication is provided that the fact-checking algorithm takes time to establish the reliability of sources.

Like social media platforms Facebook and Twitter, Google is putting mechanisms in the form of deep learning algorithms to curb the spread of fake news under its platform. In addition, many social media platforms are increasingly trying to prevent their platform from being used as an avenue for propagating fake and sometimes incendiary news.

For the instances where it cannot quickly fact-check the search result, users are prompted that the search results they are seeing are fast evolving. Google has already confirmed it started the testing just a week ago. The message is currently popping up in very few searches, mainly about developing stories and trending topics.

Google is the largest search engine company in the world and hopes the unveiling of this new feature will further firm up the company’s prospects. The company has continued to enhance the quality of its search with its search literacy advocacy. It also recently added the About button aimed at improving the quality of the search.

Right from Google Play Store to the features like Google Assistant, it has brought it to all of them. Now as per a Windowslatest report, this Dark Mode feature is rolling out for Google Search on Desktop.

Courtesy of the report(via XDA), the Dark Mode feature is slowly rolling out to Desktop users running Windows 10 and macOS. Apparently, this is also a part of the A/B testing so it might take a while to reach everyone.

For the unware, the A/B test is a randomized experiment using two or more variants of the same web page. Accordingly, a small percentage of users are able to activate the Dark Mode on the Google Search page currently. As for the browser support, the report says that users need to be on Chrome 76+ on Windows 10.

This browser, which is based on Chromium Project, should be on the version 1809 or newer. Users will first get a notification at the corner on the page saying “Dark theme is now available”. Enabling it by clicking on ‘Turn on’ will switch the search page to Dark. Once enabled, you will have the option to set it either to Light, Dark, or System Default.

That said, this has been enabled on Google App and its search already. Anyway, the report says that Google is enabling the features to other browsers based on Chromium(like New Microsoft Edge) randomly.

If you haven’t got this feature yet, you can always try the Force Dark Mode option on Chrome. To do this enter Chrome://flags on the address bar. Type ‘Dark Mode’. Enable the Force Dark Mode for Web Contents and relaunch Chrome.

Its system will have a ‘Fact Check’ label on its image search results to verify the visual content, starting from today.

The Fact Check label can be found on the image thumbnails in the image search category and will search as a verification effort in Search and news. According to a statement from Google, “Photos and videos are an incredible way to help people understand what’s going on in the world. But the power of visual media has its pitfalls—especially when there are questions surrounding the origin, authenticity, or context of an image.”

Editor’s Pick: [Updated: Inward+Outward folding flexible display too] Visionox announces second-gen “wraparound display” technology

In other words, the new feature arrives to help people differentiate between authentic searches and unknown and possibly misleading sources. These labels will also help users make informed decisions regarding the content that they wish to see. Google also shared an example of this through its official Twitter handle. Say, someone, search Google Images for a shark swimming down the street in Houston, a fact check label will be attached below it, verifying the content.

Is that image of a shark swimming down a street in Houston real? Google Images now has "Fact Check" labels to help inform you in some cases like this (no, it was not real). Our post today explains more about how & when fact checks appear in Google Images: https://t.co/YisZuOyGEH pic.twitter.com/aRntlIo6qT

If a user clicks on the image to expand it, the fact checked search result will also display a preview of the image alongside a short summary of the information contained within the webpage and where the image is featured. Notably, these fact checks are present only on independent, authoritative sources and it is currently unknown what criteria a publisher needs in order to receive to also fall under this category. An algorithm determines trustable sources and offers the label.

The new feature will allow users to search, compare and recharge their prepaid mobile phones directly from the search page itself. Moreover, the user can compare discounts from retailers including Paytm, Freecharge, Google Pay and MobiKwik.

After confirming the number and carrier details, the user can compare recharge plans, and then can select a third-party recharge platform to complete the transaction. Upon a successful transaction, the app redirects the user back to Google Search with relevant customer support information.

Google Search Prepaid Recharge feature currently supports Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, Jio, and BSNL. Surprisingly, the new feature is limited for Android users until now.

“Prepaid cellular subscribers use a variety of ways to recharge their mobile phone. Today, we make it easier for people in India to recharge prepaid SIMs with a new Google Search experience,” Google said in a blog while announcing the new feature.

Google is planning to add a few more payment providers and a couple more carriers to the list in the coming weeks.

However, that might be changing soon. A new feature coming to Google search will now show a comparison when you search for two phones and it detects “vs” in the search query.

A few users have reported that when they searched for two devices with “vs” in the query, they got presented with a comparison table highlighting the specs of both phones. The example shown below is that of the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL.

[envira-gallery id=”156808″]

The search result first shows a few rows which can then be expanded after selecting the blue drop-down button. There is even a “Highlight differences” button.

The search isn’t perfect as someone detected an error in the comparison table. A commenter (Nick Cipriani) posted a screenshot on the AndroidPolice article that shows that the Pixel 2 XL has a Micro-USB port instead of a USB-C port.

While sites like GSMArena have a disclaimer saying they cannot guarantee that the information is 100% correct, there is an option to contact them for corrections or provide missing information. For Google’s comparison search result, we guess we will have to wait for them to correct error(s) as there is no way to send them mistakes detected.

READ MORE: Lynky Is A Google Assistant Smart Home Hub With A Display

The feature is still unavailable to most people, so this is probably a gradual roll-out or a test.
