Gorilla Glass, a specialized glass manufactured by Corning for electronics, especially handheld gadgets like smartphones is found anywhere. Over the years, Corning improved its glass and it is currently at its seventh generation called Gorilla Glass Victus. Though it is better than its predecessors, a report states that Apple and other smartphone manufacturers are looking to make Gorilla Glass even more durable by using diamond-like carbon(DLC) coatings.

A report posted on Seeking Alpha by Robert Castellano (via PhoneArena) quotes an Allstate subsidiary SquareTrade study from November 2018 that Americans dropped more than 50 million screens in 2017 and spent a whopping $3.4 billion to fix them. These repairs cost as less as $170 to up to $329.

A staggering amount of $14 billion had been spent in repairs by the people of the US from 2007 till 2017. One survey even revealed that iPhone users were six times more likely to damage their handsets than to either lose them or have stolen.

This is the reason why Apple and other smartphone companies are considering to make use of diamond-like carbon coatings over Gorilla Glass. This coating, with its properties like low friction, high hardness, and high corrosion resistance, can improve the durability of Gorilla Glass or any aluminosilicate glass.

DLC coatings also have properties like thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity. Therefore, they can be used as protective coatings not only on displays but also on sensors and flexible semiconductors.

Currently, three companies have developed systems to coat normal glass, Corning Gorilla Glass, and other aluminosilicate glasses with diamond-like carbon coatings. Two of them are Intevac – a public company and Denton Vacuum – a company with 50-year expertise in the equipment business.

Last but not least, this coating is reported to increase the cost of per display in pennies and therefore, it may not increase the overall cost of a finished smartphone by a higher margin.

OUKITEL will be launching its next rugged smartphone in the WP series dubbed as WP6 on March 20. Apart from the sturdy build, the handset also comes with extreme features to go with it.

The forthcoming OUKITEL WP6 is powered by MediaTek Helio P70 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz. The chipset includes four small and four big cores to offer peak performance in gaming and other mundane tasks. The silicon is further paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM to let keep more apps in the background and let users store lots of pictures, videos, documents, other files.

The whole body of the phone is made of ruggedized material, whereas the front of the device comes fitted with a 6.3-inches display with a dew-drop notch at the top. The resolution of the screen is set at 2340 x 1080 pixels and has an aspect ratio of 18:9. Lastly, the display is covered by a 1.1mm layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for added protection.

The battery inside this device is a monstrous 10,000 mAh cell, which the company claims can offer 750 hours of standby, 45 hours of calling, 25 hours of browsing and 10 hours of video playback. Massive batteries need fast charging to fuel them up faster and hence the phone also supports 18W charging technology. Being a rugged phone, the handset also comes with IPX8 certification and hence it can withstand drops from 1.2 meters as well as survive underwater of 1.5 m depth for 30 minutes.

Most rugged industrial smartphones don’t have good cameras. But the OUKITEL WP6 features a triple camera setup at the back consisting of a 48MP primary sensor with f/1.79 aperture paired with a 2MP depth sensor and an aux camera. Whereas, the selfie camera that houses in the notch is of 16MP with f/2.0 aperture. As for authentication, the device supports face unlock as well as a traditional fingerprint sensor located on the right side.

The company also assures the operating system of the phone to be faster than its previous models as well as phones from its competitors. Unfortunately, the brand did not reveal the pricing of the handset, which it will do on March 20 and guarantees it to be affordable.

The new chemical composition makes it possible to increase the compression levels of the Gorilla Glass 6 because of which it does not break easily even after multiple drops.

Currently, the company is evaluating by seeking assistance from multiple customers. It is expected to be available on forthcoming devices that will be arriving in the near future. There is a possibility that the flagship phones arriving in 2019 may come equipped with Gorilla Glass 6.

Vivo has focused on the design of both phones. Promotional images show a device with very thin bezels. Sources say they have used the latest COS narrow border technology to arrive at a bezel size of just 1.59mm. They’ve also put Corning’s 5th generation glass on top of the display for protection. The antenna lines also sport a U-design that goes around the top of the phone.

The unique selling point of the X9 is its dual-front facing cameras (20MP+8MP) which work together to capture HD depth of field images. The 20MP sensor captures the details and the 8MP sensor obtains the depth information resulting in SLR bokeh images. The X9 Plus on the other hand is said to have dual cameras on the back as well, making it a total of 4 sensors.

The Vivo X9 will launch with a 5.5” FHD display, 4GB of RAM, and a Snapdragon 653 chip. The X9 Plus will have a 6” display, the same processor and possibly 6GB of RAM.

OPPO’s R9s is scheduled to launch on October 19 and it’ll be the first phone to feature Sony’s new IMX398 camera.

A new leak has revealed that the phone will also have a new antenna design allowing it to achieve an ultra-thin body made of 98.8% metal with a thickness of just 6.58mm.

The leak also adds that the screen of the OPPO R9s will be covered with Gorilla Glass 5 which hopefully someone is going to put to test just like they did with the Galaxy Note 7.

Other details mentioned include a Snapdragon 625 processor, a 3010mAh battery, VOOC fast charging, and an IMX398 camera with a large aperture of f/1.7 protected with sapphire glass.

In addition to that is the mention of OPPO launching a roaming service similar to what Samsung offers with their S Roaming service and Xiaomi’s Mi SIM and Mi Roaming which lets you access the internet without a SIM card.

To cap it, we also get to see the GeekBench results of the upcoming phone. The OPPO R9s scores 848 on the single-core test and 3121 points for multi-core. The benchmarking site reveals that the phone is running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow clocked at 2.0 GHz and has 4GB RAM.
