GPD has announced the upcoming release of its WIN Max 2 handheld, now powered by AMD’s latest R7 8840U processor. This new model aims to deliver improved AI capabilities, as reported by IT Home.

Featuring 32GB of memory, the new handheld meets the rising standards for AI-focused PCs, exceeding the 16GB minimum specified for such devices. It will operate on the Windows 11 22H2 version, with expectations to support the upcoming 23H2 version, signaling a commitment to leveraging the latest in AI technology.

The core of this update is AMD’s Ryzen 8040 series CPU, introduced last month. The R7 8840U is characterized by its 8 cores and 16 threads, a turbo frequency of 5.1GHz, and an enhanced Radeon 780M core display. Its AI performance, primarily driven by an improved NPU, is a step up from its predecessor, the R7 7840U.

However, GPD’s testing, as shown by CPU-Z scores, reveals that the performance of the 8840U is comparable to that of the 7840U in handheld versions. This suggests that the new model’s advantage lies more in AI processing enhancements rather than a significant increase in general computing power.

While details regarding the price and availability of the new WIN Max 2 model have not been released, it is expected to be priced slightly higher than the current R7 7840U model, which is priced at $1,370.

GPD shows off the Win Max 2 mini gaming PC with Intel Core i7/ Ryzen 7 & 32GB RAM

Shenzhen-based gaming handheld startup GPD announced the upcoming Win MAX 2 handheld gaming PC in March this year. The company has now showcased the design of the portable PC via a couple of images and a short video.

The GPD Win Max 2 handheld gaming PC will be powered by either an Intel Core i7-1280P Alder Lake CPU or an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor. It also offers the Intel Iris Xe or Radeon 680M graphics to go with the processor options.

The Win Max 2 supports up to 32GB of RAM and has a refined QWERTY keyboard, game controllers, and two SSDs. It was first announced in March 2022 and its availability will be via a crowdfunding campaign later this year.

The GPD Win Max 2, going by recent real images and videos, sports a refreshingly new design. It has dimensions of 8.9 x 5.7 x 1 inches and has slimmer bezels around the screen. The Win Max 2 offers RAM/storage configurations between 16GB/1TB and 32GB/2TB.

Gaming performance is enhanced with the Win Max 2’s 1920 x 1200 pixels resolution. This resolution is, however, adjustable to suit the user’s preferences. The lower display resolution could be further enhanced with integrated graphics. The new Intel/ AMD chips will deliver significant improvements and allow up to 60fps resolutions.

The GPD Win Max 2 has a 10-point capacitive touch with stylus support compatible with Microsoft Surface Pen Protocol. The Intel chip models have two Thunderbolt ports, while the AMD chip models have two USB4 ports with lower power consumption. The USB4 ports are not Thunderbolt-capable but the AMD models offer better memory speeds. An optional 4G LTE network module is present in the GPD Win Max 2.

The GPD Win Max 2 has a built-in camera, a backlit keyboard, a cooling fan, and quad speakers. Its aluminum-magnesium alloy chassis provides some degree of ruggedness. The power button sits at the side of the device and it lacks a fingerprint sensor. There are also covers for the joysticks which offer design versatility. This gives the device a traditional laptop looks. The Win Max 2, given its specs, is expected to be priced on a premium scale. Its monster capabilities could however justify the expected high pricing of the GPD Win Max 2.

GPD’s Next Gaming Handheld is the GPD Win Max 2, a Fierce Competitor to the Steam Deck

Besides the Nintendo Switch and gaming on smartphones, the concept of gaming on the go has always fascinated gamers and tech enthusiasts alike. In recent years, technology has now made it possible to play PC games via a new category of tech, called “gaming handhelds” that are equipped with laptop processors and can run PC games but are in a smartphone-tablet-like form factor for portability.

GPD, the Shenzhen-based startup in the gaming handheld market, is known for its best-sellers such as its GPD Win 3, and GPD Win Max. However, both models were released quite some time ago and since then, a fierce competitor has arrived on the scene, the Steam Deck. Thus in 2022, GPD has decided to announce the GPD Win Max 2, a 14-Core Intel Alder Lake Windows gaming handheld beast that is looking to shake the industry.

In its official announcement post today, GPD reveals that the Win Max 2 is featuring a 10-inch 1920×1200 Full HD or a 2560×1600 QHD display, a major leap in the industry considering its predecessor, the Win Max, only had an 8-inch with 1280×800 pixels.

Despite the increase in screen size, the dimensions of the Win Max 2 are only jumping from 207 × 145mm to 228 x 160mm. GPD mentions that they were able to keep the device compact with much slimmer bezels on all sides. GPD has also shared an official sketch of the device. However, the sketch only shows off a very simplified build of the device, without the keyboard, colours or gamepad of the device. GPD mentions that they will be revealing more details of the device nearer when it’s ready for launch.

Under the hood, the GPD Win Max 2 is a handheld gaming powerhouse. It is equipped with Intel’s 12th Gen Core i7-1280P, which features 14 cores and 20 threads in a compact form factor. The CPU boosts up to 4.80 GHz, has 24MB Smart Cache, and eats between 20 and 64 watts. The device is also configurable with up to 32GB RAM, up to 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD in one of the two M.2 slots.

Compared to its main rival, the Steam Deck which only maxes out at 512GB with a Zen 2 AMD processor, the GPD Win Max 2 may take over Valve’s throne soon.

The device is also juiced with a 65Wh battery, a surround sound quad-speaker setup, one Thunderbolt 4 port, 3x USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, a built-in webcam, and a QWERTY keyboard with backlight. Price and availability have not been announced yet by GPD, but we expect GPD to share more details about the device soon by the end of 2022.
