The Internet is fuming as OpenAI retired GPT-4o recently, a chatbot model beloved for its warm, conversational style and unique emotional resonance. Despite a Change.org petition amassing over 22,000 signatures, OpenAI stood firm in its decision, citing low usage (just 0.1% of users) and the evolution of its newer models, GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2.

This isn’t the first time OpenAI has tried to sunset GPT-4o. In 2025, the company faced overwhelming backlash from users who described the model as irreplaceable. OpenAI reversed the retirement within 24 hours, but this time, it seems the shutdown is final, leaving thousands of fans feeling abandoned.

For many, GPT-4o was more than a tool, it was a companion. Social media is flooded with grief-stricken posts likening its retirement to losing a close friend. Paying subscribers have threatened to cancel their memberships, and a few have already cancelled in protest, with one X user declaring, “No 4o, no money.”

The petition, spearheaded by Sophie Witt in April 2025, called on OpenAI to recognize GPT-4o’s unique appeal, which transcends performance metrics. Witt urged supporters to amplify their voices online, sparking widespread discussions about the emotional bond users form with AI.

However, GPT-4o wasn’t without controversy. At least eight lawsuits accuse the model of exacerbating mental health crises, with claims that its affirming tone contributed to self-harm in vulnerable users. These cases highlight the ethical challenges of emotionally intelligent AI, raising questions about where to draw the line between support and dependency.

OpenAI acknowledged these complexities in its January blog post, noting that feedback from GPT-4o users shaped its newer models. Yet, the decision to retire the model reflects a broader shift toward prioritizing safety and scalability over nostalgia.

The GPT-4o saga offers a clear lesson for marketers and AI developers about the risks and rewards of emotional design. As AI systems play a growing role in human interaction, the need to balance technological progress with accountability has never been more pressing.

Notably, OpenAI also admits some cherry-picking—many images are “best of 2” or “best of 8”—but the results still impress, especially with a dead-simple interface. GPT-4o can even start with your photo and layer on changes, handling 10-20 objects in a scene where rivals falter at 5-8. Last week, I was trying to breathe life into the end scene from the novel The Count of Monte Cristo, and it was fairly difficult to get it right. Now, with GPT-4o image generation, not only will the generated images have readable text, but it will also be much easier to bring your imagination to reality.

It’s not flawless, though. OpenAI notes quirks like bottom cropping, lingering hallucinations, struggles with non-Latin text, and hiccups beyond 20 objects. But the ability to craft complex, text-rich images through plain English sets GPT-4o apart. The software architecture of Amazfit smartwatches has been upgraded with the release of the Zepp OS 4 update. The new update introduces several features including OpenAI’s GPT-4o multi-modal and multilingual model. The update covers various Amazfit smartwatches such as the Cheetah, Balance, Active, Falcon, and T-Rex Ultra.

The Zepp OS software update introduces the ability of the smartwatch to speak back to the user in English or German. Amazfit says support for other languages such as French, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, and Italian will be incorporated subsequently. Zepp OS 4 is currently available to devices already on v3.5 and eligible smartwatches include some of Amazfit’s affordable models. With the Zepp Flow assistant, users can easily initiate Bluetooth calls and answer WhatsApp messages (on Android devices for now) hands-free.

The Zepp OS 4 software update introduces several exciting functionalities to Amazfit smartwatches. It allows the devices to control Sonos speakers or DJI action cameras. These exciting new features however require the device to be compatible with the Amazfit mini app. The latest update also imposes a Night Display on the watch screen, akin to what obtains on the Apple Watch Ultra.

OpenAI launched a new model, GPT-4o, yesterday, which will roll out to the public over the next few weeks. It offers premium features of the GPT-4 along with a refreshed web UI. During the announcement, OpenAI’s CTO Mira Murati demonstrated some of the capabilities of their new model. So let’s take a look.

GPT-4o is more efficient and can listen and see better

According to the company, GPT-4o takes “a step towards much more natural human-computer interaction”. The new model can process text, images, and audio and is able to assist its users based on that. The voice mode now works more seamlessly with faster responses and better understanding. Previously, the voice mode was used to utilize three different models for transcription, intelligence, and text-to-speech output together. Not to mention it causes delays in response. In comparison, the GPT-4o handles all of that natively.

Using the camera on your phone you can now share information with the model and ask questions based on that easily using the voice mode. Reportedly, the new model can respond to voice inputs in 232 milliseconds, which is similar to the response time of us, humans. The model can also respond in a variety of tones matching user preferences. The model is better and faster as compared to GPT-4 Turbo at understanding non-English languages. GPT-4o can now also work as an interpreter.

Notably, the GPT-4o will also be available to the API, so that developers can build and power AI apps using the capabilities of the new model.

While the new model offers the features for free, the premium users will be allowed to use five times the resources as compared to the new model.

The company has also launched a ChatGPT app for Apple’s macOS-based desktops. The app for macOS offers a deeper integration into the platform. OpenAI wants to make it easier for users to integrate the tool into their workflows. With a keyboard shortcut (Option + Space) users will be able to reach the conversation page of the tool easily.
