<p>Real Graphene, a US-based company is working on graphene-enhanced battery cells which the company says is almost ready for mainstream commercial use. As for the benefits of the graphene battery, it is claimed to get charged really fast.</p>
<p>As per Samuel Gong, CEO of Real Graphene, while the regular phone batteries take about 90 minutes, sometimes a little quicker, to recharge, the Real Graphene cell is much faster, with a full charge of a 3,000mAh cell taking about 20 minutes using a 60W charging.</p>

<p>He also adds that while most phone batteries can manage between 300 and 500 charge cycles, Real Graphene’s batteries can last about 1500 cycles for the same capacity, and because the cell generates much less heat it runs much cooler, it’s safer too.</p>
<p>The company says that it provides a complete battery solution to its clients, including battery and the special chipset that’s required for charging. It believes that since the Real Graphene battery still uses lithium, the enhanced version would be a simple swap for manufacturers.</p>
<p>While the company is yet to sign deal with smartphone manufacturers to power smartphones with graphene-based batteries, it has started selling Real Graphene <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/power-bank">power banks</a> which can be purchased through Amazon.</p>

<p>Huawei France&#8217;s official Twitter account recently posted about graphene batteries. The tweet explicitly claimed that Huawei&#8217;s next flagship, the P40, will come with a next-generation graphene battery. People were quick to point out that the technology involved in the post was basically impossible, and not too soon after the company themselves debunked the statement, claiming that the P40 Pro would not have a graphene battery.</p>
<p>In fact, the company even went ahead claiming we shouldn&#8217;t expect graphene anytime soon.</p>

<p>For those who don&#8217;t know, graphene is a revolutionary material that promises significantly faster charging times and very high battery endurance, which means you can charge your battery many times faster than conventional Lithium-ion batteries and the charge will remain for days together. Batteries made out of graphene will also take up less space in a smartphone.</p>
<p>However, the possibility of the upcoming Huawei P40 Pro, or any smartphone sporting a graphene battery is pretty low. Prominent leaker @IceUniverse, who is well known for his scoops in Samsung smartphones via his Twitter handle, has ridiculed the speculations by saying that the technology is currently &#8220;impossible.&#8221;</p>
<p>So why is this exactly? It&#8217;s mainly because they&#8217;re really hard to make right at the moment. We&#8217;ve only heard rumors about this technology until recently, and even Samsung, who have a head start compared to everyone else, aren&#8217;t expecting graphene batteries until 2021 or so. So chances, we really shouldn&#8217;t expect anything new soon.</p>

<p>A new leak has revealed that the Mate 20 series will have a technology never been used before in a smartphone. According to the leaked photos which were posted on Weibo last week and seem to have been taken during a private presentation, the Huawei Mate 20 is expected to come with graphene-related cooling.</p>

<p>A number of manufacturers have incorporated some sort of cooling in their devices this year. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-pocophone-f1/">POCOPHONE F1</a>, for example, has liquid cooling. It actually uses water flowing through a copper pipe to keep it cool. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-note9-exynos/">Galaxy Note9</a> also uses a Water Carbon Cooling system which has the liquid flowing through a carbon-fiber + copper thermal pipe for heat dissipation. However, no manufacturer has used graphene for cooling.</p>
<p>Graphene is much better than other materials currently in use when designing a cooling pipe as it has an ultra-high thermal conductivity and is a better conductor of electricity than copper because of its honeycomb structure. It is also thinner and much stronger. Research has been going on to find ways of using graphene in active and passive cooling and the results show it is better at heat dissipation.</p>

<p>It appears Huawei has found a way to use the material for cooling at a commercial level and will use it in its Mate 20 devices. <p>The leaked presentation images also mention dual heat pipes and dual cooling fans which are presumed to be for a new MateBook in development. The new MateBook may be announced this year or early next year.</p>

<p>It has been reported that Honor&#8217;s vice president, Xiong Junmin, said today that the Honor Magic 2 will feature a graphene-based technology. He also said the phone will offer more surprises when it launches.</p>
<p>Analysing the first part of the statement, there are a number of guesses with respect to how Honor may implement graphene &#8211; one of the new wonder materials in recent years &#8211; into its Magic 2 phone.</p>
<p>First, graphene-based batteries. Back in 2016, Huawei&#8217;s Watt Labs announced at the Japanese Battery Symposium that it had achieved a breakthrough in Graphene-Assisted High-Temperature Li-ion batteries.</p>
<p>According to the <a href="https://www.huawei.com/en/press-events/news/2016/12/Graphene-Assisted-Li-ion-Batteries">press release</a>, Huawei said the application of Graphene-assisted heat-resistant technologies allowed their lithium-ion batteries to continue to function in a 60 °C environment which is 10 °C higher than the current limit. The technology helped with heat dissipation and helped to lower the temperature. Huawei also said li-ion batteries infused with the technology have double the battery life of ordinary Li-ion batteries.</p>
<p>Lab tests have shown that a graphene-infused Huawei battery will still retain more than 70% of its battery capacity after more than 2000 charge cycles at a temperature of 60 °C.</p>

<p>Now, the Honor Magic 2 is expected to support 40W fast charging just like OPPO&#8217;s Super VOOC technology present in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-find-x/">Find X</a> Lamborghini Edition and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/08/23/oppo-r17-pro-super-vooc-fast-charge/">OPPO R17 Pro</a>. For safety reasons, it makes sense if the Honor Magic 2&#8217;s battery is infused with Graphene-assisted heat-resistant technology so as to keep the battery cool during charge.</p>
<p>Another way Honor might use graphene is in the overall cooling of the phone. One form or the other of cooling has been employed by smartphone manufacturers in their phones this year. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-pocophone-f1/">POCOPHONE F1</a> uses liquid-cooling via a copper pipe and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-note9-exynos/">Galaxy Note9</a> uses a Water Carbon Cooling system which is a combination of carbon fiber and copper.</p>
<p>For the Honor Magic 2, we presume Honor has found a way to use graphene in the cooling system to keep the device&#8217;s temperature low when running heavy based tasks such as gaming. Research has shown that graphene is better as a cooling material than other materials currently in use. It is also cheaper and thinner which means the phone can remain thin.</p>

<p>Either of these two ways or even a combination of both may be what the Honor Magic 2 will feature which will be game-changing for the industry. Huawei is gunning for the top spot in the mobile industry and its Honor sub-brand has also set a target to be one of the top three brands by 2022. It sure looks like it is heading in the right direction.</p>
<p>The Honor Magic 2 is expected to launch on October 26 and will come with the new Kirin 980 chipset, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and a display with practically no bezels.</p>

<p>The existing lithium-ion batteries can take around an hour to charge completely. The new technology can possibly reduce the charging time to just 12 minutes. It can be also used in electric cars in future as graphene ball batteries are able to maintain a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius.</p>
<p>The entire information on the findings of SAIT is available on Nature. SAIT created a three-dimensional graphene ball by synthesizing graphene with silica. The graphene balls were then used as anode and cathode for lithium-ion batteries. South Korea and the U.S. are the two regions were Samsung has filed a patent for this new technology.</p>

<p>The commercial use of lithium-ion batteries began in 1991 and since then it has been widely used in electronic devices. Because of its limitations, companies are now looking for alternatives. SAIT’s graphene ball technology appears very promising, but there is no guarantee whether Samsung will introduce it in its upcoming flagship smartphones like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/11/24/samsung-galaxy-s9-may-deliver-90-percent-screen-body-ratio/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Galaxy S9</a> or Note 9.</p>
<p>SAIT is known for carrying out numerous technological innovations such as the development of the cadmium-free Quantum Dot materials that are used in Samsung’s flagship OLED TVs. In August, it had also opened an Artificial Intelligence (AI) lab in University of Montreal in Canada.</p>

<p>Being a small startup, the WPG needed funds to commercialize their power bank and as a result, they put it up for crowdfunding on Jingdong. The product was listed as WPG Graphene lightning mobile power bank and the plan was to raise 100,000 yuan. That figure was soon achieved in no time and yet the support kept coming in for the product. As at the time of writing, the project has achieved 216, 810 yuan and it keeps rising. Just so you&#8217;ll be aware, the product will still be open on crowdfunding for the next 11 days, so expect a monumental figure at the end of the crowdfunding exercise.</p>

<p>Perhaps participants are encouraged by the revelation that the 5,000mAh graphene mobile power band only needs 10 minutes to achieve a full charge. There is also a 1,000mAh capacity version and both support 12V / 5A fast charge. The power bank also supports other ratings such as 5V / 3A, 9V / 2A, 12V / 1.5A, and has a maximum power output of 18W. Despite these power capabilities, overheating won&#8217;t be one of its challenges because of the presence of graphene.</p>

<p>And it looks like, we have the first batch of graphene phones. The first smartphone made from graphene has unsurprisingly come from China. The country has over 2200 patent applications for the material as of 2014, nearly half of the world.</p>

<p>The phone manufactured and made available for sale by the company Galapad will be called as the SETTLER α. It will feature a 5.5-inch touch screen display made of graphene with full HD 1080p resolution. Graphene touch screens are much more sensitive than regular ones. Inside, there will be a 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor along with 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. At the back, will be an 8MP camera and up front, there will be a 5MP shooter. Finally, it will also support 4G LTE networks for super fast internet speeds. Retail price is around $406.</p>
<p>There are a number of advantages of using graphene in smartphones. First of all, as mentioned above, the graphene made touch screens are much more sensitive and produce better colors. These touch screen panels can transmit up to 97.7% light. The use of graphene in batteries help increase the overall battery life and standby time of the device drastically. Finally, the material is a good conductor of heat and it helps reduce the temperature of the device to a maximum of 35 degree Celsius.</p>
