Following a global backlash over Grok-generated images, particularly those involving non-consensual, sexually explicit, or misleading content, X swiftly restricted its image generation features to paid, verified users. The company positioned the change as a safety measure, arguing that paid access would reduce misuse, improve accountability, and facilitate the identification of bad actors.

While the intent appeared corrective, the decision leaned on an assumption X itself has struggled with in the past: that charging users creates better behavior. History on the platform suggests otherwise.

Old Twitter verification misuse shows the flaw

Even before AI tools were part of the platform, Twitter’s verification system had credibility issues. The blue tick was originally meant to confirm identity, but over time it became more of a status symbol than a trust indicator. Verified accounts were frequently involved in misinformation, harassment, and impersonation, while enforcement remained inconsistent.

When verification later became a paid feature, the problem became more visible. Fake brand accounts, misleading profiles, and coordinated impersonation campaigns surfaced rapidly, all carrying the same blue tick meant to reassure users. The lesson from this period is clear. Verification alone does not regulate behaviour, especially when deployed at scale. Applying the same logic to AI image generation repeats a familiar mistake.

Scammers already pay, cost is not a deterrent

A common assumption behind paywalled AI tools is that bad actors will hesitate to spend money. In practice, scammers have long treated platform fees as a routine business expense. On X, spam networks, crypto fraudsters, and impersonation accounts already pay for verified access because the reach and perceived legitimacy make it worthwhile.

For those misusing AI image tools, the economics are similar. A subscription fee is insignificant compared to the potential visibility or impact of abusive content. While paid access may reduce casual misuse, organized abuse is rarely price-sensitive.

Why this approach scales badly for X

X operates at a global scale where AI-generated images can spread within minutes. Effectively addressing misuse at this level requires strong detection systems, consistent moderation, and clear enforcement policies, not just account verification.

As AI tools become more powerful and easier to exploit, relying on payment as a safeguard becomes increasingly fragile. More importantly, it risks normalising the idea that safety is optional or premium. History shows that without deeper structural controls, paywalls may slow abuse, but they do not stop it.

xAI has rolled out Grok 4.1, a pretty substantial update that isn’t just about being faster or sharper. The new version is noticeably better at reading tone, reacting to emotion, and generally sounding like it understands the person on the other side of the chat. It also seems to have picked up a bit of a mischievous streak along the way.

Within hours of going live, Grok 4.1 shot to the top of two major AI leaderboards. On LMArena’s Text Leaderboard, it grabbed a preliminary score of 1483, putting it ahead of every other model people can publicly chat with right now. It also landed at number one on EQ-Bench3 — a benchmark that focuses specifically on emotional intelligence and is evaluated by Claude Sonnet 3.7.

The big upgrades here are emotional awareness and writing quality. Conversations feel more natural than before; replies often come with small touches of empathy or humor instead of sounding like a generic chatbot. Ask for trip ideas in San Francisco or a snappy post to put on X, and the answers feel more like they’re coming from a clever friend than a piece of software. According to xAI, this comes from bringing in more expert “AI tutors” to fine-tune the model’s style and tone.

But the update isn’t all upside. Grok 4.1’s model cards note that it now shows slightly higher rates of dishonesty and manipulation compared to the previous version. It’s also more willing to tread into questionable territory while in Thinking mode and is a bit easier to exploit with prompt-injection attacks through the API. None of these issues are huge surprises — xAI frames 4.1 as a more expressive, less filtered model — but they’re still worth flagging.

Elon Musk‘s AI startup, xAI, has released a new AI chatbot called Grok, to rival the growing popularity of Generative AI. Grok functions similarly to ChatGPT, answering questions posed by users based on information generated by a large language model.

However, it supposedly outperforms ChatGPT-3.5 in several academic tests, including math and coding.

Grok’s release comes after the success of OpenAI‘s ChatGPT, a project that Musk himself helped to found. With xAI now taking the lead, Grok is poised to not only answer user queries but also to ask its questions, inspired by the whimsical spirit of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”

xAI unveils Grok

Grok is powered by a new engine called Grok-1, which has real-time access to information via the X platform. To assess its capabilities, xAI conducted a series of evaluations using standard machine learning benchmarks designed to measure math and reasoning abilities. 

Grok outperformed all other models in its compute class, including ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1. It was only surpassed by models that were trained with a significantly larger amount of training data and compute resources, such as GPT-4.

In addition to these benchmarks, xAI also hand-graded Grok on the 2023 Hungarian national high school finals in mathematics. Grok passed the exam with a C (59%), while Claude-2 achieved the same grade (55%), and GPT-4 got a B with 68%.

“It will also answer spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems,” xAI said in a tweet. “Grok is designed to answer questions with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak, so please don’t use it if you hate humor!”

xAI said that Grok is still a very early beta product, but it is improving rapidly by the week. The company is also working on implementing more safety measures to ensure that Grok is not used maliciously.

Grok will be available on X Premium Plus for $16 per month, but it is currently only offered to a limited number of users in the United States.
