A Chinese blogger named Gu Xuyang, who runs Beautiful Technology, has been ordered to pay a compensation of one million yuan for leaking details about a Xiaomi smartphone.

In August last year, Gu Xuyang had released an unboxing video of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition ahead of the official launch of the device. This was in violation of the confidentiality agreement between the blogger and Xiaomi.

According to the ruling by China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, Gu Xuyang, head of Beautiful Technology, failed to comply with the confidentiality agreement signed with Xiaomi and leaked information about the Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition.

It added that he recorded the unboxing video of the Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition and did not take any confidentiality measures, resulting in the video being circulated on the Internet. His behavior seriously violated the confidentiality agreement between the two parties, disrupted the pace of the announcement of Xiaomi’s new products, and caused irreparable losses to the company.

Gu Xuyang has been ordered to pay Xiaomi liquidated damage of RMB 1 million, which roughly converts to $154,695. If he fails to pay the damage within the determined time period, he will have to pay the debt interest during the delayed period. Further, he is also asked to tender a public apology within seven days, the content and method of which shall be determined through negotiations between the two parties.

He is also ordered to pay the arbitration fee of the case, which stands at RMB 96,360 which is around $14,908. Complying with the ruling, the blogger has issued an apology on Weibo, which reads: “This case was arbitrated by the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, and it was determined that my actions had violated the confidentiality agreement and caused serious consequences. Xiaomi should make reasonable compensation. I recognize the arbitration result and am willing to undertake the corresponding Responsibility.” He has apologized to Xiaomi, Lei Jun, and Xiaomi users.
