The beta version of Huawei’s  HarmonyOS 2.0 has been released on a few devices, including the P30 and Mate 30 Pro 5G. This product-in-development, the HarmonyOS is designed and structured on a distributed operating system architecture, with the capability to function in a variety of devices. It is part of Huawei’s strategy to provide a versatile OS with great adaptability for a whole gamut of applications.

The user interface of the Harmony OS 2.0 is EMUI 11, which is adaptable to both Harmony and Android. In addition, this OS, fully developed by Huawei, supports Android apps, so everything from the App Gallery should work.

OpenHarmony, the open-source core component of the operating system, is hosted on Gitee, which is seen as China’s version of Microsoft’s GitHub. Harmony OS 2.0 is also part of the OpenAtom Foundation, with Huawei a major-grade donor. Other donors include Tencent, Baidu, and Alibaba. The OpenAtom Foundation mirrors the Open Handset Alliance, for the Android OS collaboration and development. 

HarmonyOS 2.0 beta has already been launched on some devices and many more may come on stream thereafter. Honor, which has become independent of Huawei, is weighing its options and has not ruled out using the HarmonyOS.

HarmonyOS is designed to seamlessly integrate various smart devices to implement fast connection and a whole raft of activities between the devices. The design ensures that services can be seamlessly transferred among the devices to produce a smooth all-round experience.

HarmonyOS uses distributed technology to make application development possible on different device platforms in an efficient manner. In addition, the HarmonyOS deploys a component-based software design to fit itself to any particular device forms on the basis of their individual characteristics.

Huawei first unveiled the HarmonyOS 2.0 (also known as Hongmeng OS 2.0) at the Huawei Developer Conference 2020. The tech giant has today officially announced the release of the developer beta version of the new ROM targeted at app developers.

According to Wang Chenglu, president of Huawei’s consumer BG software department, this year, Midea, Joyoung, Boss Electronics, and Puffin Technology have all released products that run on Hongmeng OS. The tech giant’s goal in 2021 is to cover more than 100 million devices from 40+ mainstream brands.

HarmonyOS was conceived originally for the Internet of Everything, with a better experience and more adaptations. For instance, with HarmonyOS, JD’s app can run on TVs, even refrigerators, and other screen-equipped devices. Thus, hundreds of millions of devices including cars equipped with a smart screen can run the JD app or any other app. This opens up several possibilities like allowing payment portals such as UnionPay to be accessed using multi-devices like PC, TV, etc.

At present, the beta version public test recruitment activities have been rolled out and developers and partners can apply to participate for free. However, it is open to just the Mate 40 series and Huawei P40 series as well as the MatePad Pro tablet.

Starting from today (December 16), Huawei will provide developers with two ways to get the beta version on the selected devices. Developers can use the remote simulator in Huawei DevEco Studio by downloading the DevEco Studio 2.0 Beta3 version from the HarmonyOS official website to get it. Alternatively, they can use the exclusive OTA to upgrade their device. First, you have to register and when approved, you will then receive the official Huawei public beta invitation email. According to the email content guidelines, you can get OTA push.

Here are the complete mobile phones and tablet models that the HarmonyOS mobile phone beta supports in China.

• For mobile phones, there is the Huawei P40 full Netcom (5G dual card), as well as the P40 Pro Full Netcom version. Others include the Huawei Mate 30, Mate 30(5G), Mate 30 Pro, Mate 30 Pro(5G), the model list is ANA-AN00, ELS-AN00, TAS-AL00, TAS- AN00, LIO-AL00, LIO-AN00.
• Tablet: Huawei MatePad Pro Full Netcom version, Full Netcom version (5G), WIFI version. The model list is MRX-AL19, MRX-W09, MRX-AN19.

Huawei has officially announced that it would hold the HarmonyOS 2.0 Beta developer conference on December 16. Details contained in a press release by the tech giant include the highlights and agenda of the event.

From the look of things, the HarmonyOS 2.0 beta will be the major highlight of the event. Huawei, in September, first unveiled the HarmonyOS 2.0 at the company’s Developer’s Conference 2020. The HarmonyOS 2.0 incorporates smartphone adaptability for the first time and the company disclosed that it would launch a beta test version for smartphones for developers at the end of the year. Later on, it was disclosed that the new OS will be unveiled in December.

Huawei will give an in-depth analysis of the HarmonyOS distributed application framework. The OS will also include DevEco Studio 2.0 one-stop distributed application development platform and mobile phone emulator. The event will also have in attendance HarmonyOS technical experts/developers which attendees can interact with face-to-face. The company will also release HarmonyOS 2.0 beta mobile phone developer plan. The company’s dev. experts will also explain the key features and development tools of HarmonyOS 2.0 mobile phone beta. App partners will also share HarmonyOS full-scene innovation cases.

In October this year, the president of Huawei’s Consumer Business Software department, Dr. Wang Chenglu, is reported to have hinted that the adaptation of Hongmeng OS 2.0 is currently progressing very well, and R&D is ready. He also stated that the new OS is expected to be released as scheduled in December.

Later in November, Mao Yumin, vice president of Huawei’s software department, said that Huawei’s Hongmeng mobile phone developer Beta version released on December 16 will adopt a new design language. He also hinted that the Huawei Mate 40 series will be the first to be upgraded to HarmonyOS 2.0.

According to previous details, Huawei and Honor branded phones which run on platforms such as Kirin 9000, Kirin 990 5G, Kirin 990, Kirin 985, Kirin 980, Kirin 820, Kirin 810, and Kirin 710 will continue to adapt to the HarmonyOS but models running EMUI 11 will be upgraded first. (via)
