Huawei says its in-house operating system, HarmonyOS, has crossed a milestone the company believes is critical to its long-term survival.

According to Huawei, the combined installed base of HarmonyOS 5 and HarmonyOS 6 has now passed 27 million devices. The company refers to this figure as its internal “survival line,” meaning the minimum scale needed for the platform to sustain developer interest and ecosystem growth.

HarmonyOS was first launched six years ago, after US sanctions cut Huawei off from Google’s Android services. Since then, the company has steadily pushed its devices toward its own software, accelerating the transition after being placed on the US Entity List in 2019.

Huawei says developer activity remains strong. More than 10 million developers are now registered on the platform, with over 100,000 new devices reportedly activated each day. Apps on HarmonyOS see roughly 88 million downloads and updates daily, according to the company.

The latest version, HarmonyOS 6, became available to developers in June 2025 and rolled out to consumers in China in October. One of its more notable additions is a file-sharing feature similar to Apple’s AirDrop.

Market data suggests the OS is gaining ground at home. Counterpoint Research reported that HarmonyOS accounted for 17 percent of China’s smartphone OS market in Q2 2025, slightly ahead of iOS at 16 percent for the sixth consecutive quarter. Android continues to lead with 66 percent.

The OS growth comes alongside Huawei’s broader smartphone recovery in China. Data from research firm BCI indicates Huawei briefly reclaimed the top vendor position in late November and early December 2025, helped by strong sales of its Mate 80 series.

With newer devices shipping exclusively on HarmonyOS, Huawei appears increasingly committed to building a self-contained ecosystem, positioning its platform as a serious alternative in China’s smartphone market.

This makes it even lighter than the MacBook Air. Despite the featherweight body, the chassis is built using a micro-velvet textured aluminum. Huawei’s latest laptop houses a foam copper VC cooling technology that improves thermal management to handle the performance output of 40W.

On the front, the MateBook Pro sports a 14.2-inch OLED display with a 3.1K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and 1000 nits of peak brightness. Huawei offers an impressive 93 percent screen to body ratio and 99 percent glare reduction with its nano-etching and nano-magnetic coatings. For audio, the MateBook Pro houses a six-speaker Yuezhang system for immersive sound.

A sizeable 70Wh battery pack powers the MateBook Pro, which Huawei claims up to 10.2 hours of battery life. It even supports fast charging up to 140W, along with 66W reverse charging to other devices. Among its new features, the MateBook Pro runs on the HarmonyOS 5 platform with various AI powered tools. This includes the Xiaoyi AI assistant for document summaries, voice or text commands, and more. Huawei has officially launched its first personal computer operating system built from the ground up: HarmonyOS PC, also known as Hongmeng Computer in China. What is HarmonyOS PC?

Huawei officially unveiled its HarmonyOS for PCs yesterday and confirmed that its first device running the new OS will launch on May 20. Not to anyone’s surprise, the chip powering the device will not be an off-the-shelf silicon, either. Now, a fresh leak out of China has revealed some major details about the silicon.

According to DCS, the Kirin X90 is Huawei’s in-house desktop processor, and it’s internally codenamed “Charlotte Pro.” Interestingly, Huawei’s Kirin 9010 chip, which powers the Mate 70 smartphone, has a similar codename, “Charlotte.” 

The implication is that Huawei might be developing the Kirin X90 based on the same CPU architecture as its mobile SoCs, with notable enhancements to scale it up for PC-level performance.

Kirin X90 Specifications (Expected)

The leak describes the Kirin X90 as a 10-core processor in a 4+4+2 configuration with support for 20 threads via simultaneous multithreading. It’s also said to support China’s national cryptography standards, SM3 and SM4.

Beyond the core and thread count, the leak does not reveal details about GPU specs, process node, or thermal performance. According to previous reports, the Kirin X90 might feature a 10-core graphics unit codenamed “Ma Liang 920”.

The chip is also expected to support up to 32GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory on a 128-bit bus, with 100GB/s of bandwidth. Storage-wise, it could handle up to 2TB of SSD space and come with three USB-4 ports.

This isn’t Huawei’s first attempt at carving out space in the PC market. But this is the first time Huawei has its in-house chip and OS for the desktop. The company is basically leaning hard into vertical integration. How well the silicon performs in comparison to its peers is still an open question.

HarmonyOS for PCs is a self-contained platform

In short, the OS is intended to be a self-contained platform independent of Android or Windows. It’s a path Huawei chose since it began developing HarmonyOS in response to U.S. trade restrictions.

Security and privacy were focal points in today’s presentation. HarmonyOS for PC reportedly features real-name developer authentication, app store signature verification, and strict permissions for screen recording and screenshots. There is a super privacy mode that disables the camera, microphone, and location access system-wide. 

On top of that, Huawei is introducing chip-level full-disk encryption, claiming that even if a hard drive is removed, files remain inaccessible without unlocking the screen.

As for productivity, Huawei says its new “HarmonyOS Office” experience enables seamless cross-device collaboration, unified accounts, multi-device sync, and HarmonyOS AI-assisted interactions. 

Enterprise solution

Enterprise customers are also part of the plan. Huawei says it will offer business-oriented solutions built around the HarmonyOS base, supported by two cloud platforms—the Enterprise Application Center and Enterprise Business Deployment Cloud—along with management, security, and productivity tools.

Huawei confirmed that HarmonyOS for PC will be officially released on May 19. It remains to be seen how the OS will perform in practice, what kinds of devices will support it first, and whether third-party developers will embrace yet another platform in an already fragmented software landscape.

Initially announced in 2015, HarmonyOS officially launched in 2019 and has seen four major updates since then. In January 2024, Huawei revealed HarmonyOS Next, which is now tailored for a fully native HarmonyOS experience, focusing only on apps developed for the HarmonyOS ecosystem.

As of now, the top 5,000 apps in China are undergoing native development for HarmonyOS, and the HarmonyOS Next App Store currently offers over 10,000 apps and services, covering almost all basic usage needs.

A recent report from Counterpoint Research shows that HarmonyOS has gained significant market share in China, increasing from 8% in Q1 2023 to 17% in Q1 2024. Meanwhile, iOS’s market share dropped from 20% to 16% in the same period, making HarmonyOS the second-largest operating system in China, surpassing Apple’s iOS.

Huawei’s Xu Zhijun emphasized that for HarmonyOS to become a true mobile operating system, it needs its own robust ecosystem. The goal is to achieve better coordination among apps, the OS, and hardware, leading to an improved user experience.

Now the latest news is that Huawei is aiming to roll out the HarmonyOS ecosystem globally. As a result of the US sanctions in 2019, the company came up with a new operating system named HarmonyOS for their smartphones, tablets, and other connected smart devices.

Huawei’s proprietary operating system has been limited to the home country so far, but now the company is aiming to expand it globally. During this year’s Analyst Summit Huawei’s current chairman, Xu Zhijun revealed the plans. Huawei believes that it can make it the World’s third-most preferred operating system for mobile devices.

The company is working closely with developers to build a robust app ecosystem for HarmonyOS. The company will first focus on the Chinese market. According to Xu, people in their home country spend most of their time on a collection of nearly 5000 apps. As usual, the company will focus on the availability and seamless performance of those apps at first.

However, building the app ecosystem and competing the established giants like Google’s Play Store or Apple’s App Store can be challenging. According to data from Business of Apps, the Google Play Store currently has a collection of over 3.2 million apps and the App Store also has over 2 million. It will be interesting to see how the global market responds if Huawei becomes successful in building a competing app ecosystem.

Speaking of HarmonyOS NEXT, the company is also reportedly working on a new self-made “Harmony Kernel” instead of using a Linux kernel. For those unfamiliar, the kernel forms the foundation of the operating system. So Huawei is really trying to make its operating system stand out from Android.

The US is a major player in the tech space, owning some of the biggest tech brands, such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple. It’s hard to imagine mobile devices without partnering with these brands, especially Google, but Huawei is doing it by breaking all the barriers. But how did they do it? You’ll learn everything about it in this post.

Huawei was one of the top three smartphone sellers worldwide in 2019. In fact, the company surpassed Apple’s sales in many quarterly results throughout 2018 and 2019. Huawei’s smartphone business was at its peak during this time, and then the US government gave a massive blow to this Chinese company – the restriction to work with any organisation operating in the United States.

In May 2019, the US government, led by President Donald Trump, announced that Huawei and several other Chinese companies were now on the “Entity List.” In other words, this means that new Huawei phones can no longer ship with Google-owned apps such as YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Drive. They can’t work with any other company operating in the country.

Huawei smartphone sales, after reaching record highs, experienced a sharp decline after the ban. The inability to preinstall Google-owned apps was a major blow, but restrictions on cutting-edge 5G technologies proved equally detrimental to their high-end devices.

The Rise of Huawei

Three months after the Entity List ban, Huawei publicly unveiled HarmonyOS at its inaugural developer conference in Dongguan on August 9, 2019. The company revealed that they had been working on it since 2012. Huawei didn’t position HarmonyOS as a mobile OS until September 2020, when they announced HarmonyOS 2.0.

In July 2021, the Huawei P50 series was unveiled as the first phones with HarmonyOS. This was a big success for the brand, but the phone didn’t have 5G support.

Huawei didn’t stop there and waited for US sanctions to end. Instead, it focused on building an in-house chip fabrication plant. On August 29, 2023, the company announced Kirin 9000S – Huawei’s first fully domestically fabricated chip with 5G support. This was Huawei’s answer to the US that it can develop chips on its own without Western support.

Huawei Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro were the first phones to get the Kirin 9000S chip. These are flagship phones which have sold over 30 million units.

Huawei’s Software Growth

Although Huawei AppGallery has existed since 2011 in China, the rapid development began after the US ban to make it the best alternative to the Google Play Store. On March 1, 2021, Huawei AppGallery had over 530 million active users, which, in October 2022, jumped to 580 million.

During the HarmonyOS 3 event in July 2022, Huawei revealed that the HMS ecosystem had roughly 1.6 million global developers, which has now crossed 5.4 million.

HarmonyOS is not completely independent from Android. It still uses Android Open Source Project (AOSP) to some extent. To clarify, Huawei can still use AOSP since it’s open-source but it can’t use Google Mobile Services (GMS).

However, the Chinese giant is already working on the second phase of HarmonyOS development – HarmonyOS Next. It will be completely independent of the Android operating system. It won’t even allow sideloading Android apps, which is currently possible with HarmonyOS. It will force app developers to create HarmonyOS-specific versions.

Huawei’s Alternatives to Google Apps

Huawei has developed alternatives to Google apps, which has helped the company grow in the competitive smartphone market.

The commercial version is expected to arrive in Q4

The images showcase a new design for the OS, but also a significant change under the hood – native Android apps are no longer supported. This could be a potential hurdle for users who rely on a mix of Android and HarmonyOS apps. The blogger highlights the concern for apps that store a lot of local data, like messaging apps and note-taking tools. Without a clear solution to migrate or access this data, users might face a frustrating experience even if they can download the apps again.

Additionally, the blogger said that the kernel is indeed a new microkernel. A Linux compatibility module has been integrated to facilitate Linux syscalls. This news comes after Huawei’s HarmonyOS Eco Thousand Sails Sailing Ceremony in January, where they announced the developer preview program for HarmonyOS NEXT Milky Way Edition. The developer Beta program is expected to launch in Q2 (April-June) of this year, with the commercial version arriving in Q4 (October-December).

Given the timeline, there’s still time for Huawei to address user experience concerns like app compatibility and data migration. With a complete overhaul of the app ecosystem on the horizon, it will be interesting to see how Huawei bridges the gap for users accustomed to the familiar Android app landscape.

The company estimates that HarmonyOS achieved a critical 16% market share in China by Q4 2023, attracting a significant developer base. HarmonyOS now boasts nearly 4% of the global market share, putting it on track to compete with Apple’s 23%.

The Shenzhen government has announced a big plan to expand the ecosystem of Huawei‘s HarmonyOS operating system, according to a report from Xinhua news agency, the official state news agency of the People’s Republic of China. 

This move is to make the platform more competitive and position it as a rival to dominant operating systems like Android and iOS.

HarmonyOS, developed by Huawei as a response to US sanctions, has steadily gained traction in the Chinese market. It now powers an array of Huawei devices, from smartphones to smartwatches. 

Now, the Shenzhen government has launched the “Shenzhen Action Plan for Supporting the Development of Native HarmonyOS Open Source Applications in 2024.” The goal is to have more than 10% of China’s native HarmonyOS applications developed in Shenzhen by 2024.

The plan also includes building at least two special industrial parks for HarmonyOS development and training over 1,000 software companies in HarmonyOS.

Additionally, there are plans to expand HarmonyOS outsourcing services to cultivate a pool of 500,000 developers and promote the use of HarmonyOS applications in key industries in Shenzhen.

As an open-source operating system, HarmonyOS has vast potential for adoption outside of Huawei devices. With support from the Shenzhen government and Huawei’s efforts to attract developers and partners, HarmonyOS could become a strong competitor globally.

Huawei’s recent success with the HarmonyOS-powered Mate 60 series smartphones has laid a strong foundation, securing the company a substantial domestic market share.

Once enrolled in the initiative, users cannot revert to the regular stable channel. In the following weeks, they will receive multiple builds, such as closed beta, open beta, and stable. At last, they will receive the public stable release.

Thus, if you have the Chinese variant of any of these watches and want to try out HarmonyOS 4 beta, we recommend you not to. It’s better to wait for the official release of the update.

As news of Huawei reportedly dropping Android app support on its HarmonyOS devices starting next year has spread to the general public in China, job demand for software developers who can develop apps that can run natively on HarmonyOS has surged in the country.

First reported by ITHome, the Chinese tech publication noticed an uptick in job listings recruiting for app developers who are skilled in developing mobile applications that have native support for HarmonyOS devices such as the Huawei Mate 60 Pro.

Most recently, this week 3 well-renowned tech companies, Baidu, WPS and Flight Manager, have posted job vacancies that require applicants to have software development experience in HarmonyOS-related mobile applications.

Most notably, Chinese search engine giant, Baidu, has launched a recruitment listing with the job position “HarmonyOS App R&D Engineer” in its Baidu Search Engine Product R&D Department. The role will be mainly responsible for the research and development of a Baidu app that will be native to HarmonyOS. Priority will be given to job applicants who have 1 year or more of work experience and familiarity with HarmonyOS application development languages ​​​​such as ArkTS or Java / Development languages ​​and technologies such as Android. 

Besides Baidu, Kingsoft WPS is also hiring new senior product managers for its WPS Office service which requires “proficiency in HarmonyOS system development tools”. This is because the new senior product manager job roles are delegated with the responsibility of implementing and improving native HarmonyOS support into its existing WPS Office suite.

As of release time, Chinese companies which has native support of Huawei’s HarmonyOS in their software services include Sina News, Little Red Book (also known as Xiaohongshu), and Weibo.

Users that outside of China will still be able to use Android-based applications through the EMUI operating system. So, there’s no need to worry about this issue affecting your device. “HarmonyOS operating system is designed to meet the needs of the Internet of Everything (IoE) era. It provides a shared language that enables a smart and connected experience across different devices. HarmonyOS 4 has been installed on over 100 million devices in a short period of around three months, catering to these capabilities. However, there is currently no plan for the distribution of HarmonyOS for devices outside of China. Consequently, Huawei users outside of China will continue using their usual Android-based applications with the EMUI operating system.”

Even other specs are identical. The Wiko Hi Enjoy 60s 5G is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chip and boots HarmonyOS. It draws energy from a 6,000mAh battery and supports 22.5W wired charging.

The phone is equipped with a 6.75-inch LCD screen on the front. This display has a dewdrop notch and offers a resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels.

Other features include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and 199g weight.

Wiko hasn’t revealed the price and availability of Enjoy 60s 5G so far.

For the unaware, Huawei’s operating system HarmonyOS also arrives in an open-source version called OpenHarmony. The first version of this software was released in September 2020.

Initially, it was only compatible with low-hardware devices with RISC-V chips and up to 128MB RAM. Over the next few years, the operating system improved a lot that it can now boot on smartphones and laptops.

A company part of the HarmonyOS ecosystem recently unveiled a phone with OpenHarmony 4.0 on board. Let’s take a look at this handset.

This new smartphone comes from Shenzhen Qianhai New Silk Road Technology Co., Ltd. It is not intended for consumers and is rather targeted at OpenHarmony developers.

Thus, the device is officially called the “OpenHarmony Developer Mobile Development Board.” The company behind this phone has previously released several other development boards for OpenHarmony.

As for specifications, this smartphone is powered by a Unisoc P7885 chipset paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. This chip is Unisoc’s first 5G-enabled mobile platform for industries.

The SoC is manufactured using TSMC’s 6nm EUV process. It comes with an octa-core CPU comprising 1 x  ARM Cortex-A77 core clocked at 2.7GHz, 3 x ARM Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.3GHz, and 4 x ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 850MHz. There’s also an ARM Mali-G57 quad-core GPU.

Further, the handset flaunts a 6.58-inch FHD display (LCD) with a dewdrop notch. It sports a 64MP camera on the rear along with a 0.3MP macro camera. On the front, it hs an 8MP snapper.

The connectivity options on the phone include dual SIM, 5G, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, GNSS, and USB 2.0 (Type-C). It also has a MicroSD card slot and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor but no MicroSD card slot.

Finally, the device is blacked by a 4,500mAh battery with support for 18W wired charging.

The handset is priced at ¥1,299 and is up for pre-order until November 30. It will be shipped from January 30 next year.

We all know that in light of the U.S. sanctions, Huawei Technologies isn’t backing down. The Shenzhen-based tech behemoth plans to ramp up its investment in its home-grown operating systems, HarmonyOS and EulerOS, aiming for self-reliance and ecosystem expansion.

Ren Zhengfei, Huawei’s founder and CEO, conveyed a tone of defiant optimism in a recent conversation with Liu Yadong, the former editor-in-chief of Science and Technology Daily. The transcript was widely circulated in Chinese media outlets, highlighting Ren’s conviction that “Huawei will be more prosperous” despite tougher times ahead.

Since finding itself on a U.S. blacklist in 2019, Huawei has been steadily cutting its dependency on U.S.-origin technology. It has poured resources into HarmonyOS, a versatile operating system designed for mobile and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, as well as EulerOS, crafted for enterprise servers. The company is so committed to these platforms that it plans to “invest tens of thousands of manpower and billions of capital each year,” according to Ren.

But what sets Huawei apart is its strategy of opening up these operating systems to its partners. In China alone, HarmonyOS powers over 30 other operating systems and boasts a user base of 600 million. The tactic is already paying off as various industry partners have started migrating to Huawei’s cloud service, effectively broadening its ecosystem.

While some may see U.S. sanctions as a hurdle, Ren views them as an impetus for innovation. He even advocates for learning from the U.S. in areas like basic research and talent development.

Huawei’s growing investment in its operating systems showcases not only its will to survive under economic pressure but also its vision for becoming a dominant player by enriching its own ecosystem. Whether this proves to be the long-term solution to its problems remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Huawei is betting big on home-grown technology.

HarmonyOS is Huawei’s native operating system that differentiates itself from Google’s Android. Although based on Android open source, the software has its own identity and unique features. The company recently announced the fourth iteration of its custom OS, HarmonyOS 4.0, and it has already been installed on over 10 million devices. Here are the details.

Huawei previously announced that just two weeks after its release, HarmonyOS 4 had been installed on 5 million devices. An impressive 1 million users upgraded to this new operating system on its very first day. The company has now shared another milestone, claiming that over 10 million devices have already adopted HarmonyOS 4.0.

Huawei is rolling out the latest software to eligible devices at a rapid pace. The company first added over 30 smartphones to the HarmonyOS 4.0 beta program and later it included 37 more devices to the roster.

HarmonyOS 4.0 comes with several notable changes, including rich theme templates and stylized layout design. You’ll be able to select the colors of your app icons and set emoji wallpapers and home screens by selecting your favorite emoji.

It will also let you better manage your notifications, by clustering them together and sorting them by importance. The notifications of the same application are now stacked into dynamic cards so that you can see more information about each notification without having to open it. HarmonyOS 4.0 also allows you to identify text and images by double-clicking, and then long-pressing to select them.

Notably, Huawei might also be planning to extend the HarmonyOS to PCs as well. We might be seeing Huawei laptops running the company’s native OS instead of Windows starting next year.

Earlier, we reported that a Chinese developer had successfully installed Huawei’s open-source HarmonyOS operating system onto a PC platform. This HarmonyOS 3.2 Beta 3 version was tested on the HP notebook, which responded accurately to all the mouse inputs.

According to recent reports, Wang Chenglu (CEO of Shenzhen Kaihong Digital Industry Development) has hinted at the possibility of an official HarmonyOS release for PCs next year.

For those who may not be familiar, Wang Chenglu became a part of Huawei back in 1998 and held the position of President in the Consumer BG Software Department. But what has really caught our interest is that Wang Chenglu recently confirmed the company will be introducing HarmonyOS to PCs through a reply on a Weibo post. A fellow user posted a question on Weibo, “Will there be a HarmonyOS PC next year?” Wang Chenglu replied with a simple “Yes.” However, it still needs to be confirmed exactly when this OS will be launched next year.

Recent rumors suggest that Microsoft might be getting ready to launch a new operating system called Windows 12. If Huawei does launch HarmonyOS, we’ll be able to see how it performs compared to Windows 12. Previously, it was reported that the HarmonyOS on an HP notebook performed smoothly. The developer also adapted the drivers for the USB, network port, SATA port, PCIe, and other hardware of the HP notebook.

Huawei phones have AppGallery as the app marketplace. The Google Play Store alternative for HarmonyOS devices is now getting service widgets support, which apparently simplifies the user experience of the app.

As reported by Huawei Central, users with HarmonyOS devices can now add the new AppGallery service widgets to their home screens. The process is straightforward, simply pinch inwards on the home screen and tap on “Service widgets” at the bottom. Next, you need to select “AppGallery,” and the screen will present you with various sizes and feature options for the AppGallery service widgets.

You can also remove or edit any service widgets by pinching inwards on the home screen, tapping on Service widgets, and selecting the widget you want to change. The AppGallery service widgets are rolling out with the latest software builds for HarmonyOS. It may take some time for the widgets to reach all users.

Huawei has started shipping the beta version of HarmonyOS 4.0, the latest iteration of its operating system, to some phones. So far, the company has opened the beta program in China for over 36 phones and tablets and the software has been installed on 5 million devices already.

The new software brings interesting features. For one, there’s a new Live Window, which is similar to Apple’s Dynamic Island. It lets supported apps show real-time alerts and notifications in a pill-shaped icon on the corner of your device. You can tap on the icon to expand the window and interact with the app. HarmonyOS 4.0 also has rich theme templates and a stylized layout design. You’ll be able to select the colors of your app icons and set emoji wallpapers and home screens based on your favorite emoji.

The US trade ban forced Huawei to develop its own operating system, called HarmonyOS. The majority of Huawei phones in both China and the global market now operate on this OS, although global users may recognize it as EMUI. The company has already launched three major versions of HarmonyOS, each with several notable features and upgrades. Now, it is preparing to release the latest iteration, HarmonyOS 4.0, in August. Here are the details.

HarmonyOS 4.0 to be a solid upgrade

Huawei is going to announce HarmonyOS 4.0 on August 4. The company posted a picture of some code that returns “What to expect in August” and a big number 4, which hints that the announcement will be made at the annual HDC event in August. The new software should bring a significant design overhaul and a number of new features.

Richard Yu, CEO of consumer BG at Huawei, hinted at several features of HarmonyOS 4.0. The new software should bring new audio improvements for Huawei cars. It will allow for multiple people, devices, screens, and audio zones in-car systems. The OS will also support six-zone sound source positioning.

HarmonyOS 4.0 for smartphones will bring major design changes and new features, making it a significant upgrade over the current version. Beta testing is already underway, and some users have shared their initial impressions on social media. Being the latest flagships from the brand, the P60, Mate 50, and Mate 40 series are leading the way in the beta testing process, but the OS is currently limited to China.
