Case images of the Oppo R19 have surfaced today to reveal that the smartphone may sport a refreshed rear design.

As it can be seen in the images below, the R19 case features a large vertical cutout which may house the dual camera setup and its LED flash. Below it is there is an oval shaped cutout for the fingerprint sensor. It seems odd to see a rear-mounted fingerprint since the predecessor OPPO R17 featured an in-screen fingerprint reader. Probably, the in-display fingerprint sensor feature could be available only on the OPPO R19 Pro model.

The volume buttons of the phone are placed on the left side while the power button appear to be on the right. The bottom edge of the smartphone has cutouts for 3.5mm headphone jack, USB-C port and a speaker grille. At the top edge of the Oppo R19 smartphone’s case are three cutouts. The cutout at the center is a big one which suggests that it could be for the pop-up selfie shooter. If the company opts for such a selfie camera on the R19, it may sport a notch-less display like the OPPO Find X smartphone.

There are no details available on the specifications of the smartphone. The OPPO R15 series that were unveiled earlier this year were powered Helio P60, but the R17 and R17 Pro that released in the second half of the year were fueled by Snapdragon 670 and Snapdragon 710. Since OPPO did not use MediaTek chipset to power the R17 series, the Taiwanese chip maker is reportedly readying Helio P80 chipset for the Oppo R19 series. Just as the R17 has 8 GB of RAM, the R19 may also feature the same amount of RAM.

The above images have for the first time revealed the design of the upcoming R19 handset. Hence, it is advisable to digest the report with a pinch of salt and wait for newer information to confirm its design.

Since the poor performance of the flagship Helio X30 chipset, MediaTek seems to have given up on the high-end chipset market. Rather, the Taiwanese fabless chip manufacturer is focusing on the mid-range market in the last two years. The company first released the Helio P30 and later on the Helio P60 and recently, the Helio 70 was announced. The chipsets have received an appreciable level of patronage. The company is now set to release its next-gen midrange SoC and it is the Helio P80.

Details of the Helio P80 chipset includes that the it will be built on the same process as TSMC’s 12nm process but the architecture will be upgraded and the AI performance will be greatly improved. There are speculations that the AI performance is even stronger than Huawei ‘s Kirin 980 processor despite being a midrange chip. This was further buttressed by the AI benchmark results which placed Helio P80 and Snapdragon 8150 above the Kirin 980. In addition, the Helio P80 processor is tipped to be used on OPPO’s R19 billed to launch next year.

Read Also: OPPO to launch Helio P80, P90 and Snapdragon 855 phones, reveals leakster

A report by Taiwan Business Times hinted that MediaTek’s Helio P60 was successfully used on the OPPO R15 in the first half of last year but the R17 series, released in the second half, abandoned MediaTek’s chipset. This has forced MediaTek to strengthen the processor performance in order to get sufficient orders for OPPO R19 in the first half of next year. Sources from the Taiwanese supply chain disclosed that the Helio P80 will be MediaTek’s main product for the first half of 2019 and will use ARM’s Octa-core architecture just like the P60/P70. The CPU/GPU architecture may be upgraded since only an improved AI capability won’t be enough to curry enough patronage especially when Qualcomm and Huawei processors are built on the faster 10nm process.

The test was carried out with the AI Benchmark app which is available on the Play Store and has over 10,000 installs. According to the info on the site, there are 9 computer vision AI tasks which are performed by 9 separate neural networks on your smartphone. The tasks include object recognition/classification, face recognition, image deblurring, image super-resolution, memory limits etc. You can read about them here.

The current ranking on the site says the Qualcomm 8150 Dev Platform is currently the best at AI tasks with an AI score of 22,082. Next comes another unreleased chipset, the MediaTek P80 Dev Platform which has an AI score of 19,453 points. This is the second time we are hearing of the Helio P80, the first time it was mentioned was a few months ago by the serial leaker, Roland Quandt.

Closing the top three is the OnePlus 6 powered by the Snapdragon 845 with 8GB of RAM and an AI score of 12,274 points and the Kirin 980-powered Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes in at the fourth position with 12,026 points. The Mate 20 X and Mate 20 grab the fifth and sixth spots while the P20 Pro which has a Kirin 970 SoC is 7th with 8921 points.

However, here are some unusual scores. For example, the Pixel 3XL and Pixel 3 are powered by the same Snapdragon 845 chipset as the OnePlus 6, but they are 15th and 16th on the list. The Mi 8 and Mi MIX 2S which also have the same processor come next. There is also a OnePlus 6 with the same amount of RAM as the one at the third spot but is 19th on the ranking.

Based on these unusual scores, we’ll advise you take the results with a grain of salt. Nevertheless, the results do show that the new generation processors perform much better than their predecessors when it comes to AI-tasks.
