Just yesterday, Xiaomi announced a new version of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 smartphone that comes with Snapdragon 650 inside. In case you don’t know, this is the new Snapdragon 618 chipset that was recently rebranded as the 650. However, it’s a relatively new chip which means we don’t have much idea about how it performs in real life as compared to its competition like Helio X10 or even Snapdragon 808.

But, when it comes to the benchmark scores, the Snapdragon 650 clearly shows its superiority amongst its rivals. So, today, let’s take a close look at how the chip stands as compared to competitors i.e. Snapdragon 650 vs Helio X10 vs Snapdragon 808. In this comparison, we will take a look only at the AnTuTu scores, because that’s readily available at the moment. This is not an extensive comparison, rather it focuses on just the benchmark scores.

Firs of all, let’s take a look at the Snapdragon 650’s benchmark scores.

These scores are pretty good considering that the chip managed 78979 on AnTuTu! That used to be flagship level benchmark score on the app, which really shows how much power lies in the chip. The 2 x Cortex A72 cores + 4 x Cortex A53 cores make the chipset powerful as well as efficient. Moreover, Adreno 510 GPU makes sure that the chip’s graphics performance is going to be great.

Now comparing the Snapdragon 650 vs Helio X10 chipsets, we can see that Qualcomm has done a good job, making it much more powerful than Mediatek’s Helio X10.

Helio X10 used to be the star of the budget segment, ever since it was featured in the first Redmi Note 3 model. Xiaomi was the first to launch this chip in a 1000 Yuan smartphone and soon, others followed. The chip is actually pretty good for the budget segment and it manages to score about 48000 on AnTuTu.

But when compared to the Snapdragon 650, its no match. As you can see in the image above, Snapdragon 650 not only blows Helio X10 out of the park but its even better than the mid-range Snapdragon 808. Now, considering that hexa-core Snapdragon 808 powers many good smartphones like the LG G4 and the Xiaomi Mi 4C, it’s really great to see that the new generation Snapdragon 650 scores even higher than this chip.

That being said, now digest the fact that this chip powers the entry-level Redmi Note 3 (new generation) and you will understand what level budget smartphones have reached today!

Now, let’s take things to another level. Let’s bring in last year’s best smartphone chipset to the comparison, namely the Exynos 7420. The chip scores around 80K-85K on AnTuTu, which means this chip isn’t too far behind. So, performance wise, at least on AnTutu, it’s too close to 7420 for a budget chipset.

So, it looks like the Snapdragon 650 inside the new Redmi Note 3 is really quite powerful for a $100 smartphone.

While it’s great to see such a chip inside a budget mid-ranger, there is one section of the population that’s really going be disappointed to hear this news — EXISTING REDMI NOTE 3 OWNERS. There are a lot of fans who bought the old Redmi Note 3 in the past couple of months and they won’t be happy for sure.

So what do you think about the new Snapdragon 650 chipset? Do you think upgrading a phone with better specs every few months is really good for the industry?

After sending out event invites, the company has started teasing the device on its official Weibo page. The latest teaser hints that the phone is going to be thin.

The new teaser revealed by the company earlier today shows a digital caliper with three question marks on its display. This clearly hints that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 Pro is going to be thin. But the title of the post further reveals some possible features of the device. The title says that designing a phone is complex in the sense that adding a new feature means compromising on some other feature.

So, what is Xiaomi trying to say with this picture? Well, my best guess would be that the battery on the Note 2 Pro is going to be large. Since we see a caliper in the image, the phone could come with a thin body with a large battery. So, how large? Well, we can’t be sure of that right now, but anywhere around 3000mAh on a thin body is considered quite impressive.

As for the other specs, it going to be the same as the Redmi Note 2. So, expect MT6795 Helio X10 chip with 2GB RAM, 13MP rear camera, and 5.5-inch FHD display. Additionally, the Note 2 Pro variant will come with a fingerprint sensor at the back as seen on TENAA images as well as an all metal body in gold color as well.

Since Xiaomi has started releasing teasers for the device, expect more features to be revealed in the coming days before launch.

However, earlier today, we came across another piece of information about the UMi Zero 2 flagship. It is said that the device will come with 4GB of RAM on board, which if true, will be a first for a UMi smartphone.

In fact, even today, there aren’t many 4GB RAM phones in the market. If this does turn out to be true, UMi will join the ranks of the few premium smartphone makers who have released such a device. This much amount of RAM means you no longer have to worry about lag during multi-tasking as it will handle any task thrown at it with ease.

As for the processor, the UMi Zero 2 will reportedly come with a Helio X series chipset. Given that the company is adding 4GB RAM inside, its likely that the phone will feature the deca-core Helio X20 chipset for maximum performance. However, this may drive up the cost unnecessarily, and hence, the company may decide to settle with the MT6795 Helio X10 octa-core chip. Even this processor is quite capable of powering flagship devices, so it won’t be disappointing to see it inside the Zero 2.

UMi seems to be making a smart decision by using the Helio X series processor instead of Snapdragon 810. Despite the claims from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 810 is still believed to overheat when used for a long time. As a result, this chip has often been the target of consumer criticism. So, using the powerful Helio X series chip (either X10 or X20) seems to be the right decision at the moment.

As per the previous rumors, UMi could be working on two variants of the flagship UMi Zero 2, one with the dual display and another with a real leather back cover, like the one on the LG G4. The phone will reportedly come with a 5.2-inch QHD panel, 20MP camera and the new USB Type-C port.

Unfortunately, we have no further information about the UMi Zero 2 at the moment, but we will keep you guys updated with new details in the coming weeks.

The company was one of the first chipmakers to jump into the 64-bit era and we have seen some powerful and capable processors lately. The MT6752 and MT6732 have been particularly popular among smartphone manufacturers, not to mention the high-end MT6795 true octa-core 64-bit Helio X10 chipset.

However, now that the Helio X10 is being used by many well known flagships like the HTC One M9 Plus and LeTV One, the company decided to showcase its next generation chip to specific customers.

Late Yesterday evening, a Chinese analyst reported that Mediatek showcased its new generation Mediatek Helio X20 chipset at a special event to Xiaomi, Vivo and other select core members. The chipset will reportedly come with 10 cores, (yes 10 CORES) and is said to reach scores of above 70,000 points on AnTuTu Benchmark. If this is indeed true, it won’t be surprising, given that Helio X10 i.e. MT6795 easily scores above 50,000 points with its eight core design. Finally, he says that the chipset will go into mass production by the end of the year.

If this is the case, Qualcomm will be under pressure. The MT6795 has received praises for its performance, while the Snapdragon 810 has been consistently criticized for its over heating problem. So, if Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 fails to impress the masses, then Mediatek may start to dominate the market with its 10-core Helio X20 chipset.

Anyways, we still have a few more months left, and anything can happen in this time. Maybe, Qualcomm will make a superb comeback with its next generation Snapdragon 820. But lets wait and watch what happens.

Meanwhile, do you think a 10-core processor is good idea?
