The company also disclosed that over 4 million developers have enlisted on the platform.

The Chinese tech giant also announced an upgraded HMS Core 6.0 during the event. HMS Core has several tools that will assist app developers to develop apps for the Huawei ecosystem. The tool includes a complete set of open HMS Apps and HMS Core, HMS Capabilities, HMS Connect, as well IDE tools for development and testing. HM Core 4.0 was only launched in January 2020 but by June of last year, the company released an upgraded HMS 5.0. One year after an even higher Core 6.0 is now official, obviously coming with several upgrades.

The speed at which the company is releasing the upgrades is an indication of its desire to grow the Huawei ecosystem which is key to the success of the HarmonyOS. The presence of 134,000 apps makes HMS the third-largest in the world after the Google Play Store and Apple’s app store.

One way Huawei was able to bring onboard over 4,000,000 developers is through offering several incentives. The company is sustaining this with the global launch of the 2021 Huawei HMS Global Application Innovation Competition. Huawei hopes to continue to attract developers and inspire greater innovation, create more beauty, and build a smart ecology of the devices covered by HMS.

In addition, the 2021 Huawei HMS Global Application Innovation Competition has a special award for women in science and technology to encourage outstanding female developers and teams.

While the service has continued to grow over the years, one major challenge is the rich large Android ecosystem that Google has built over the years. Although Huawei has made tremendous progress in its efforts to expand the HMS ecosystem, it is still miles away from Android.

However, hope seems to be in sight for Huawei as a developer partner has created an open-source solution that adapters Google apps for the AppGallery. The solution is developed by developer partner bluesource, Europe’s leading provider of enterprise app solutions. It is an open-source method that adapts GMS apps for AppGallery removing the need to redevelop apps specifically for Huawei’s app store.

The solution is christened Choice SDK and Huawei claims it makes it easy for app publishers to transform their existing apps based on GMS and Firebase frameworks into HMS usable applications. Thus, developers won’t need to create an HMS version of their apps, thus saving cost and time in app development as just little effort is needed for the apps to run on Huawei devices.

The open-source Choice SDK was originally developed for Raiffeisen Bank to help the bank make their app available to Huawei phone users in Austria. Bluesource has since made it available as open-source software so that other brands and developers can get their apps adapted faster, safer and in a more convenient way. Since it became open-source, the Choice SDK has reportedly been utilized by Austria’s national TV broadcaster ORF, Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB, Austria’s Postal Service and deals app Aktionsfinder.

Since it was rolled out in 2019, Huawei’s AppGallery has experienced a massive growth which has catapulted it to become the world’s third largest app marketplace with 530 million monthly active users (MAUs). The company recorded a massive 61.5% growth YoY in Europe to record more than 42 million users. Huawei has offered various incentives ranging from cash to a lion share of revenue from the apps and it worked. Huawei presently has over 2.3 million registered HMS developers with about 300,000 outside China. The platform has increased the number of registered developers to 2.3 million, up by 77% vs last year, and now also counts 300,000 developers outside China. Presently, there are about 120,000 apps integrated with HMS Core, an increase of 118% compared to last year.

Huawei later revealed that the service has been in development for quite some time but the abrupt ban made the company fast track the process. It also rolled out incentives to attract developers to start developing apps for its HMS app store. The company’s effort has apparently started yielding fruits.

During the online press conference where it announced its 2020 annual results, the company disclosed that it raked in a total sales revenue of 891.4 billion yuan globally last year. Surprisingly, this represents a 3.8% revenue increase year-on-year. The Chinese tech giant then added that in 2020, HMS has become the world’s third-largest mobile application ecosystem. As of the end of 2020, HMS has up to 2.3 million registered developers worldwide. The bulk of the developers are in China while overseas developers stand at 300,000. The store also houses over 120,000 extended applications.

Data previously released by Huawei shows that as of December last year, HMS has over 500 million active users drawn from over 170 countries and regions. Huawei is also projecting the mobile services to other domestic smartphone brands to use n their phones. Also, there is HMS for cars which has been deployed by BYD and Mercedes in their latest cars released for the Chinese market.

In addition, Huawei also stated that HarmonyOS has attracted more than 20 hardware vendors and 280 application vendors who are participating in the expansion of the app store.

According to a BaijiahaoBaidu report, the latest version of the HMS Core 5.0 might arrive in Meizu devices soon. As per a Huawei staff member, the Chinese smartphone maker, Meizu, will gain access to the HMS Core services. Meaning, the company’s devices could arrive integrated with HMS services, instead, of Google’s mobile services. The news was shared on the popular Chinese social media platform Bilibili by @秋叶梓洛.

For those unaware, the Chinese tech giant’s HMS Core services was designed to replace the Google Mobile Services after the company lost access to GMS when it was placed on the export blacklist by the US government. At the moment, HMS is available in three major platforms, including its proprietary HarmonyOS (also known as HongMengOS in China) and Android OS as well.

Unfortunately, it is currently unknown if Meizu is actually planning on using Huawei’s proprietary services.
Guo Ping, Huawei’s rotating chairman, has said that the company is now focusing on the development of its HMS ecosystem. After getting banned from using Google services last year, the company developed its own Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and made it available for all, as a replacement for Google.

He has also added that the company will continue to invest in connectivity, high-performance computing, cloud technology, and artificial intelligence. Guo also added that the company will continue to support supply chain partners who still work with Huawei.

It is also confirmed that Huawei has sufficient chips for the telecom equipment, server, and cloud business, as we previously reported. However, Guo Ping said that the company is still looking for solutions for the smartphone chipsets, which the company needs hundreds of millions every year. He added that the company is willing to procure chips from U.S.-based companies who receive the license from the government, including its rival Qualcomm.

The Chinese tech giant has made this move as it seeks to expand its influence in the European nations. Through the new partnership, Huawei Video will now have integrated video players from Dailymotion, within its application. This move has been made to improve Huawei’s existing application ecosystem.

Now, this service is seeing a healthy surge of developers as more than 1.5 million app developers have registered to fill the Chinese tech giant’s software ecosystem.

Previously, Huawei had set up a massive fund to incentivize various app developers to make applications for the AppGallery, since it lacked a large number of popular apps and software. This move has been seemingly successful, as the adoption of HMS is now becoming more smoother. According to Huawei Consumer Business Cloud Services Vice President, Tan Donghui, the HMS is showing a lot of promise with rising numbers.

Editor’s Pick: Oppo to launch the Ace2 EVA Transparent Edition based on the iconic Anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion

For those unaware, Huawei had lost support for Google apps and services back in 2019, when it was placed on the Entity List by the US, and faced a trade ban. This essentially caused the company to acquire a license to buy or sell services to American firms, so the company planned on developing its very own alternative. While HarmonyOS did make rounds online, the company settled for vanilla Android with its proprietary services.

At the moment, the HMS has nearly 650 million monthly active users across the globe. This is quite impressive as it marks an increase of 25 percent during the same time last year. Furthermore, the 1.5 million registered developers showcase a massive increase of 115 percent over 2019. Currently, over 60,000 applications can be found in the HMS core, marking another significant increase of 66.7 percent. So while it’s still too early to say that Huawei has turned things around, it is well on its way to carving its own independent path.

The devices that ship now feature its own HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) and with the recent launch of the Honor 9X Pro in India, the services have arrived in India as well. Now, Honor India’s President, Charles Peng, has revealed that Huawei is seeking to further raise investment in the region to grow HMS.

According to the senior official, the Chinese tech giant is increasing its investment in the country to quickly grow its proprietary services that replace the GMS. The HMS is a software ecosystem, similar to Google’s popular portfolio of apps, and features many basic apps like an app store called AppGallery. Unfortunately, a few major and popular apps like Facebook, YouTube, and more cannot be found in the AppGallery yet, which has led to slowing sales in western regions for Huawei, especially in Europe.

However, the company isn’t deterred and is renewing its efforts in regions like India. Charles stated that “You can see HMS going very fast. India would be our global first frontline to grab consumer attention. We need to speed up ecosystem building exercise and keep investments in India for developers, consumers, and partners. We will keep increasing investment.” Additionally, Peng also said that the company aims at launching 10 new smartphones that ship with HMS later this year, and will include 5G handsets as well.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei sold over 15 million 5G phones, grabs 33% global 5G smartphone market

At the moment, Honor India is looking to bring over 5,000 applications that are used frequently by Indians. This will cater to the local demand and to make sure people aren’t skeptical about buying the recently launched Honor 9X Pro or any future Huawei/Honor launches. According to official reports, the company already has 1.3 million registered developers for its HMS, with more arriving every day. Apparently, some of the devices that will launch in India will also support a few Google apps but mainly focus on its own AppGallery.

Furthermore, the company is offering monetary incentives of about 20,000 US Dollars for the integration of apps into HMS, and by its extension, the AppGallery. This fund will be used through its recent setup 1 billion US Dollar global fund that was previously announced and was made to bring HMS up to Google services standards. A few popular apps arriving in India include Hungama, Zee5, MX Player, PayTM, Flipkart, and Grofers.

For those unaware, AppGallery is a part of Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and is the company’s version of Google’s Play Store. The Chinese tech giant launched the service after losing official Google services support back in 2019. Now, the company is asking users to again download the Huawei Health app through its AppGallery, which also needs to be installed and can be found on the official Huawei website.

These handsets previously did not require the Huawei Health app from the AppGallery to work but it seems the company has made it necessary. At the moment, Huawei’s version of an app store is still severely lacking in many popular applications, especially the ones owned by Google. While this hasn’t been an issue for Chinese users, the overseas market has to deal with quite a bit of hassle.

The move from the Chinese vendor could have been an attempt to inflate its AppGallery userbase for healthier numbers from across the globe, but that is just speculation. Regardless, Huawei wearables users that use smartphones from other brands are now required to download their services even if they like it or not.

According to the CEO and Founder of Huawei, Ren Zhegfei, the Chinese market is seeing growth, while the international market is facing a decline. This is probably due to the Chinese tech giant’s smartphone offerings being shipped without Google services due to the US trade ban back in 2019. Thus, the Huawei flagship P40 series will ship with Huawei’s own mobile services, HMS.

While the Huawei Mobile Services are certainly a bit behind industry staples like Google and Apple, the company is still determined to enter the market and improve upon it. Ren Zhengfei even went on the state about the difficulties the Coronavirus has caused the company’s supply chain and also talked about its international management and remote working/conferences that they are heavily relying on.

In the interview, the senior executive revealed that the ongoing pandemic has made shipments and production difficult, but the company has also been seeing an increase in demand for tablets, computers and more, which ship with HMS pre-installed. Despite seeing meager growth in Q1, Huawei founder is confident that the annual financial report wouldn’t be impacted severely by the rocky start of the year and that the company is confident of its success in 2020.

Meaning, Huawei could no longer support Google Mobile Services (GMS) on their new releases and had to ship smartphones with vanilla Android.

Following this, Huawei had to develop its own alternative, which is the now available Huawei Mobile services with its own AppGallery and more. The ban from the US Government had severely hampered the company’s plans, but it had also boosted Huawei’s future plans for its smartphones that featured more proprietary software and hardware.

Huawei’s Richard Yu (CEO)

Now, in recent interview with Wired, Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, mentioned that he wants to bring Google and its services back to their smartphones. The senior executive stated that the company had raked in large sums of profits for Google and had been “very good partners.” Furthermore, he hopes that, “we can get the license from the US government. We are open. In the interests of the value of those US companies, they should… I hope they can give us the license.”

In other words, Google services like Play Store would be preferable as it stil offers more choice in comparison to the newly launched HMS (Huawei Mobile Services). According to Richard, they wish to stay on the Android platform with Google’s integral services. For this the company would require the US Government’s license, which is given to company’s that wish to cooperate with Huawei since the ban.

The CEO also talked about other aspects in the interview as well, touching on the topic of the affect of the recent Coronavirus outbreak while discussing its Celia voice assistant, AppGallery and TomTom map system. The new software are meant to fill in the void left by Google while the company is taking active steps in providing precautionary and health safety measures in its factories in China.

It is a new software the company has developed and will seek to aid users in finding popular smartphone applications without using Google’s Play Store service.

For those unaware, Huawei was hit with a trade ban by the US Commerce Department back in 2019. The company had been placed on the ‘Entity List’ and was deemed a risk to national security. Thus, Huawei was banned from buying or collaborating products or services with other US based companies. This included firms like Google, and with the search giant being barred from working with the Chinese company, Huawei lost the official Google service and Android support as well.

Since then, Huawei has launched smartphones with Android OS, but these lack the Google Mobile service and are the vanilla version. Google’s Play Store is the most popular app gallery service in Android so it would be a great obstacle for Huawei and its large user base. Thus, the company had previously announced and launched its Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and is now looking to further expand its software portfolio through the AppSearch.

As of right now, the AppGallery is the official app store from Huawei that lets users download applications. However, this currently lacks many popular apps and does not have the same number of apps that Google’s Play Store’s vast collection stores. This is where the AppSearch comes in, allowing users to find and download such popular APKs. Users had to initially rely on other third party apps stores like Amazon or Aptioide, but this could potentially liven up its software database.

AppSearch is currently being tested in Germany and is publically available on the official Huawei Germany website. According to the official summary, the software aims to help users find their favorite apps for Huawei smartphones with the HMS. The popular apps that can now be found include Facebook, WhatsApp and many more. It is available for the Mate 30 series, P40 series, and even the Mate Xs.

For those unaware, Huawei had faced a ban from the US Government’s Commerce Department back in 2019. The ban had led to many complications in the company’s operations in the region but also banned it from using various technologies and more from its partner companies that were based in the country. One of these was Google, which had to stop providing Android support to Huawei. Since then, the company has launched the Huawei Mate 30 series with vanilla Android and its own HMS (Huawei Mobile Services).

Huawei had to attract various developers for its new HMS platform and through its extension, for the App Store dubbed AppGallery. Now, it has been announced that the company is seeing monthly users over 400 million, with more than 55,000 groups of apps being found in the platform. In other words, a notable feat for a newly launched service is already rivaling industry giants, like Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

As of right now, the Huawei Mobile Services are currently available in 170 different countries and regions and is collaborating with local developers from Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. The company has also announced that it will be launching a “Quick App” service in the AppGallery which will allow users to try out apps without the need of downloading and installing it first. This will help with storage constraints on smartphones with lesser storage capacities.

Meanwhile, Huawei has launched Huawei Mobile Services aka HMS which is being seen as an alternative to GMS in order to reduce its reliance on Google. The company is also planning to invest billions of dollars to boost its app ecosystem.

So this recent bit of news revealing revenue numbers for Android, Apple’s iOS and other operating systems is pretty interesting.

These numbers were revealed at Huawei Developer Day in a slide from Francisco Jeronimo, Associate VP at IDC. He shared an image showing the revenue distribution among different platforms and Apple has generated 50% of the revenue. Google Play on the other hand manages much smaller 27%, while China wracks a surprisingly large 20% of revenue. No wonder Google’s never released this data before.

App Store [$33bn] (50%)

Google Play [$18bn] (27%)

China [$13bn] (20%)

Other [$2bn] (3%)

In terms of their install bases, Apple is believed to have around 1 billion users, while Google has said there are more than 2.5 billion Android users. Despite this numerical advantage, each iOS user generates $33 for developers and each Android user only $13.2. With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that apps and games tend to still come first to iOS, despite its much smaller user base.

Between this little bit of news, Huawei fighting back to reassert itself in the mobile phone market with the full release of HMS Core 4.0 to the world and the rise of other operating systems like Kai OS, it’s going to be interesting to see how things shape up in the future. We doubt anything will have a significant effect on Apple’s dominance, but everything else could change very soon.

In a similar move, the company has started a new incentive program for developers.

Huawei says that it will be offering £20 million to developers in Ireland and Britain for creating applications and services for its Dublin-headquartered mobile services unit. This announcement from the company was made at a developer conference hosted in London.

This comes at a time when Huawei looks to make itself more self-sufficient after being hit by US sanctions that have left it unable to use Google’s Android operating system on its latest smartphones.

The Chinese company is also focusing to bolster its own mobile services. It has already launched open-source access kits for developers to integrate their apps into the Huawei App Gallery, which is the company’s equivalent service to the Google Play Store.

Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), also known as Huawei ID in some markets, allow users to access the company’s specially designed apps and to store personal information, including payment details, in the cloud.

In April last year, the services were transferred to the Dublin-headquartered subsidiary from the Shenzhen headquarters for the business operations and development for all the group’s mobile service outside of mainland China, with a particular focus on Europe.

The company currently has 600 million mobile active users across more than 170 countries, including 68 million in Europe. In 2018, more than 270 million users downloaded apps from the company’s App Gallery each month.

It is also reported that Huawei is engaging with Indian developers with lucrative incentives to build localised mobile services that can be offered with its smartphones in the country. The Chinese company is reportedly in talks with about 150 top apps in India to get them on its HMS or Huawei Media Services.

Huawei Mobile Service offers a bunch of basic applications for a smartphone which includes the likes of phone, SMS, email, among others.

As per the reports, the company released two public beta applications — Huawei Mobile Services and HMS Core. This version of Huawei Mobile Services come with several bug fixes and new features as well as improved performance experience.

The new features on the app now includes Huawei accounts, applications internal payment system, message notifications, wallet service, among others. The app is now also claimed to provide more stable and high-quality services to users.

Coming to the HMS Core Test application, it is said to be a small application marketplace model that integrates the installation and download of six basic HMS services. It includes Games, Fido & Safety, Purchase, Identity, Scan, Nearby, ML, and other apps.

EDITOR’S PICK: Aiming to expand its offline presence in India, smartphone maker OnePlus partners with SRK Group

The launch of these apps and services from Huawei comes as the company remains banned from using Google apps and services given that the United States government has put the company on its “Entity List”, effectively barring it from doing business with any of the U.S. based firms without permission from the government.

To counter the dependency on Google, Huawei launched its own ecological services with HMS or Huawei Mobile Services. As per the data released by the company, as of August 2019, the HMS has grown rapidly and now over one million developers are using it with HMS Core having more than 450,00 apps on the platform.

This seems like a major boost for the company’s own HarmonyOS (aka HongMeng OS) which was launched a couple of months ago. This home-grown operating system from Huawei aims to be a one-stop-solution for all the company’s hardware and will soon be powering Huawei and Honor’s smartphones.
