The biggest change will be the new Kirin 810 processor which launched with the Huawei Nova 5. Ahead of the launch, Honor claims the Honor 8X series from last year as set a record with respect to toal units shipped.

Speaking at a Kirin 810 meeting, Vice President of Honor, Xiong Junmin, said that as at today, 8th of July, the total global shipments for the Honor 8X series has crossed 15 million units. Seeing as the Honor 8X and Honor 8X Max were released in September 2018, that means it took 9 months to get to that point.

Mr. Junmin added that the Honor 8X series was the best selling smartphone online for four months following its release. It also sold 10 million units in 173 days, the fastest for any Honor smartphone and was a best seller during this year’s 618 shopping festival.

The Honor 9X and Honor 9X Pro will be expected to set new records when they go on sale. Honor is banking on the Kirin 810 which it says cost a lot to develop. The Honor 9X series have been reported to have AMOLED displays, a first for the X line. Last week, it was revealed the 9X has a pop-up selfie camera, dual rear cameras, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It has also been reported that it will launch alongside an external gamepad that connects to its USB-C port.

Design

Huawei Enjoy Max and Honor 8X Max are exactly the same devices when it comes to the aesthetics. Indeed, the former is almost a renamed variant of the latter with only slight differences in the hardware side. This said, these two handsets have a superior design to Xiaomi Mi Max 3 thanks to a glass back, a waterdrop notch and a higher screen-to-body ratio. Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has a full metal unibody design which is surely more resistant to drops, but also way uglier.

Display

With all of these handsets, you get a huge but midrange-class display. Whatever you choose, you will have more or less the same viewing quality as well as the same level of detail. The display of Honor 8X Max and Huawei Enjoy Max is a bit taller while the one of Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is larger. Further, Honor 8X Max and Enjoy Max have a waterdrop notch, while Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is notchless but it has thicker bezels.

Specs & Software

Huawei Enjoy Max is the most powerful device of the trio. It sports an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset paired with up to 6 GB of RAM, while its opponents both have a less powerful but very efficient Snapdragon 636. So, if you live in China and you want the best performance you are lucky, as Huawei Enjoy Max is only available there for now.

Camera

While Huawei wins when it comes to design and hardware, it loses if we talk about camera quality. Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has a better dual camera setup on its rear side, which boasts a brighter aperture as well as a better autofocus system. But it remains a midrange-class camera department and it is nothing special.

Battery

Besides having a better camera than its opponent, Xiaomi Mi Max 3 also has a bigger battery and it can last more on a single charge. With a 5500 mAh capacity and a wonderful software optimization, this device has no particular difficulties to reach two days of battery life even with a stressed use.

Price

Huawei Honor 8X Max and Xiaomi Mi Max 3 are priced around €250/$289 and 270€/$312, respectively, in the global market. Huawei Enjoy Max hitten China with a price tag of about €211/$245. Personally, at least when it comes to big phablets, I do not care a lot about design, so I would pick the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 because of its better camera and bigger battery. But if you love the look and you want the best performance, get a unit of Huawei Enjoy Max.

The Snapdragon 660 version of the Honor 8X Max has 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It is available in Magic Night Black, Charm Blue, and Charm Red and is priced at ¥1799 (~$260).

The Honor 8X Max has a 7.12-inch screen with a water-drop notch and a 1080 x 2244 resolution. It has a 16MP+2MP dual camera combo on its rear and an 8MP front-facing camera. It also has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and a MicroUSB port for charging its 5000mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0.

The price is a bit higher than the Xiaomi Mi 6X with the same memory configuration which is priced at ¥1599 (~$233). However, the Honor 8X Max has a much bigger display, a larger battery capacity, stereo speakers and also keeps the 3.5mm audio jack. If these are features you like, then the extra $30 should be worth it. On the other hand, the Mi 6X has better cameras, Bluetooth 5.0, and a Type-C port. Also, its international version, the Mi A2, runs stock Android and will get updates faster than the Honor 8X Max.

Huawei Honor 8X Max vs Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Design

Xiaomi is not used to launch many midrange phones with flagship-like aesthetics, but Honor does. Honor 8X Max is much more beautiful than its opponent thanks to its reflective glass back available in three color variants: Black, Blue, and Red. It even has a waterdrop notch which only contains the front camera, as well as a thin chin. Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is the classic full metal unibody device, so it is not anything special.

Display

On these devices, you will find two IPS LCD displays with an average viewing quality but a huge diagonal. Both are Full HD+ displays, but Honor 8X Max has a taller screen with a notch, while Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is larger and it does not have a notch. Given the marginal difference in viewing quality, it is all about tastes: choose Honor 8X Max if you prefer a taller display with fewer bezels or choose the Mi Max 3 if you hate the notch and you want less black borders while watching videos.

Specs & Software

Same hardware, with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset and up to 6 GB of RAM. However, there is a small difference: Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is available in a configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, while to have 128 GB on the Honor 8X Max, you have to choose a configuration with 4 GB of RAM. While Honor 8X Max has the EMUI installed, Xiaomi Mi Max 3 comes with MIUI. It is a draw and it is again about tastes.

Camera

Talking about the camera department, I prefer the Xiaomi Mi Max 3. It has a dual camera setup on the back with the primary sensor borrowed from the Mi 8 and with a brighter aperture. It can click very nice photos in most of the light conditions, even though it is far from flagships.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has a slightly bigger battery than Honor 8X Max, with 500 mAh more. And it can provide a longer battery life thanks to the bigger capacity and the wonderful Xiaomi’s optimization on its devices. Both support a fast-charging technology.

Price

In China, Honor 8X Max is priced €190 for the base variant (4/64 GB), while Xiaomi Mi Max 3 carries a price tag of €220. I choose Xiaomi Mi Max 3 as the winner of the comparison as it has a better camera and a bigger battery, and I do not care about having the best design on a so big phablet. But if you do, you are free to disagree with me and choose its opponent as it is very close in terms of specs and performance.

Honor 8X

The Honor 8X has a 6.5-inch 1080 x 2340 screen with a notch. This is the same type of notch we have seen on other Honor phones this year. Honor says the phone has a 91% screen to body ratio, a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, a 4.25mm narrow chin and has a COF packaging process.

The phone is also the first smartphone to have a TUV Rheinland certified display. The certification means the device passes TUV Rheinland’s test for safe displays.

The Honor 8X has a unique design. The back is covered in a 15-layer glare 2.5D glass which has two different textures. The frame is made of metal and there is glass on the front too.

The Honor 8X is powered by a Kirin 710 processor paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. It has a 16MP f/2.0 front-facing camera with tons of features and a 20MP + 2MP dual camera combo on the rear. The rear camera has AI scene recognition which changes the camera settings to best suit what you are trying to shoot. There are also tons of shooting modes including portrait mode, slow-motion recording, and time-lapse photography.

The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.2 on top. It has a 3,750mAh battery but sadly only supports 5V/2A charging via a MicroUSB port. The Honor 8X supports using two SIM card (nano only) and a MicroSD card slot at the same time. There is Bluetooth 4.2 and support for aptX audio. It also has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and supports GPU Turbo.

The Chinese manufacturer is also expected to announce Honor Band 4 fitness tracker at the same event. The smartband is now listed on AliExpress with a price tag of $39. The pricing seems to be true as the Honor Band 3 costs around $35. The early listing of the Band 4 also contains many official images. Honor’s upcoming fitness tracker has also bagged approved from the Federal Communications Commission in the U.S. through which some of its key features have been revealed.

The AliExpress listing of the Honor Band 4 does not contain any accurate information on its specifications. Even though listing shows the device in two color variants such as Black/Red and Gray/Green, the other official images show the band in multiple colors like Blue/Black, Pink/Black and Yellow/Black.

The Honor Band 4’s FCC listing has revealed that it has a model number of CRS-B19 and it is based on Lite OS which is Huawei’s homebrewed operating system for powering IoT devices. The device can be paired to a smartphone through Bluetooth.

The Honor Band 4 will be arriving with a large AMOLED screen, but the exact size is not known. Some of the health-centric features that are available on the Band 4 are real-time heart monitor, sleep tracker, water-resistance of up to 50 meters with swim stroke and pool swimming recognition. It also tracks multiple sports activities.

The smart notification feature shows alerts for calls, messages and alarm on the fitness band. The 100mAh battery of the Band 4 promises up to 14 days of battery life on normal usage. These features suggest that Honor has prepped up a very good rival for the Mi Band 3 fitness tracker that was launched by Xiaomi in May. As of this writing, the pricing of the Band 4 is under the wraps. There is a possibility that the company may price it competitively to take on the Mi Band 3.

The devices are expected to bring some powerful specs under the hood. Today, via it’s official handle on Weibo, Honor confirms both Honor 8X and 8X Max will have more than 90% screen-to-body ratio.

It’s been a trend from past year that the devices are getting bigger displays and smaller bezels. Already, various flagships and mid range devices have followed the same principle. So, Honor couldn’t stay behind this trend and hence the more than 90% screen-to-body ratio on the new Honor 8X series.

Honor 8X already got through TENAA, certification agency in China. We have also got to know about its specs which are quite good with Snapdragon 660 or Kirin 710 on board. It is expected to come to in two different variants, one with 4/64 GB storage and other with 6GB/64GB Storage. It will likely run on Android 8.1 on board with EMUI on the top. In camera section, you will get dual rear cameras having sensor size of 20MP + 2MP. For the selfies, Honor has decided to go with a 16MP shooter on the front. The Honor 8X will measure 160.4 × 76.6 × 7.8mm and weigh 175g.

Honor 8X series is not the only product that is coming at the launch event. Along with the two smartphones, Honor will also come up with the Honor band 4 tomorrow.

Recall that the Honor 8X retail box was also leaked online last week. The Chinese brand has now shared another poster which confirms the launch date for the model. According to the poster, Huawei isn’t just launching the Honor 8X but will also unveil an Honor 8X Max. Both models will be launched on September 5.

The Honor 8X was benchmarked on GeekBench recently pointing at the presence of a Kirin 710 chipset but Master Lu benchmark did indicate that the device packs a Snapdragon 660 chipset. The device is said to bring flagship features such as AI super night mode, elevator mode and GPU Turbo technology while sporting an affordable price tag. The Honor 8X and 8X Max may likely differ only in their display sizes while the specifications are expected to be the same.
