The Magic V5 went on sale on August 28 and has quickly gained attention from buyers. E-commerce platforms and retail partners have reported strong growth since its release. In 2024, HONOR became the fastest-growing book-style foldable brand in Europe, with its market share tripling to 34 percent, according to Counterpoint Research.

From Huawei’s pioneering tri-fold concept to Honor’s slim engineering marvels, this year’s best Chinese foldables are redefining what mobile hardware can do, from displays that break brightness records to battery tech that feels pulled straight from the future.

Huawei Mate XTs Ultimate Design

Huawei introduced the Mate XTs as a follow-up to last year’s Mate XT. It remains the only production-ready tri-fold phone available for purchase in 2025. The device switches between three usable form factors: a 6.4-inch folded phone, a 7.9-inch mini tablet when half-open, and a full 10.2-inch tablet when completely unfolded. The display features COE pixel technology, which reduces power consumption by 13%.

Oppo Find N5

Oppo launched the Find N5 globally with a focus on display quality and hinge engineering. The phone features an 8.12-inch 2K LTPO AMOLED foldable screen with a peak brightness of 2100 nits and 2160Hz PWM dimming. The outer 6.62-inch AMOLED screen peaks at 2450 nits and uses ceramic guard protection.

The titanium flexion hinge is now 36% stronger and 26% slimmer than the previous generation. Both displays support stylus input. The phone runs Android 15 with ColorOS 15 and brings new features like AI call summaries and cross-platform file access.

The camera system includes a 50MP main sensor with Hasselblad tuning, a 3x telephoto lens, and an ultra-wide sensor. Under the hood, it comes with a 5600mAh battery that powers the device with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging.

In China, prices start at 8,999 yuan ($1,260), while the international model costs 2,499 SGD (around $1,937).

Vivo X Fold 5

Vivo released the X Fold 5 with a focus on battery tech and display brightness. The inner 8.03-inch 2K+ LTPO panel and the outer 6.53-inch FHD+ screen both reach up to 4,500 nits. Both screens also support Dolby Vision and UTG glass protection.

The device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and includes a VC + graphite cooling system. The hinge uses an antenna structure to save internal space and supports up to 600,000 folds.

The triple rear camera system includes a 50MP main shooter, a 50MP periscope lens, and a 50MP ultra-wide camera. It also features dual 20MP front cameras. The 6000mAh battery supports 80W wired and 40W wireless charging.

Vivo priced the X Fold 5 at 6999 yuan in China and Rs. 1,49,999 in India (around $1,700).

Honor Magic V5

Honor introduced the Magic V5 as its most durable and premium foldable to date. The design features an eight-curve frame and King Kong Giant Rhino Glass for superior drop resistance. The hinge uses aerospace-grade materials and supports 500,000 folds. The phone also carries IP58 and IP59 ratings.

HONOR Magic V5, the thinnest foldable phone in the world. Even when unfolded, it’s still the second thinnest among all smartphones. Honestly, this isn’t much of a surprise—the HONOR Magic V3 also held the title of thinnest foldable at one point. They’ve simply outdone their own past achievements.

We were fortunate enough to get our hands on the global version of this phone ahead of its release. After using it for a while, I have some thoughts to share beyond just the standard test results. Let’s start with this bulge camera module.

Camera

Maybe the body is too thin, or the camera system is too powerful—either way, the camera bump is more pronounced than I expected. But I’m not complaining; some flagship phones are much worse. And I do enjoy the benefits of a larger camera.

First up is the telephoto camera. It uses an older sensor and has a shorter focal length compared to last gen, but the sensor size has actually increased. So much better than the poor 3x telephoto of the Z Fold 7. I like this focal length—it’s one I use often in everyday shooting. Plus, its 64MP resolution without the 2×2 OCL technology gives it an edge in detail retention, outperforming most other phones in most scenarios.

HONOR is so confident in its quality that it doesn’t use AI upscaling for zoom levels under 15×. Even beyond 15×, the AI enhancement doesn’t make photos look overly processed. It doesn’t add fake details, which is great for those who dislike heavy AI intervention.

The ultra-wide camera now has an even wider field of view. I’ve always maintained in my reviews: An ultra-wide camera must be truly wide, or it’s pointless. HONOR clearly took my advice. Even though this camera still has flaws—like persistent purple fringing and mediocre low-light detail—I still love the dramatic perspective it offers.

Magic V5’s default color profile is **Vibrant**, but you can switch between two other modes depending on the scene. My favorite is **Authentic mode**, with its high-contrast, cinematic look. As for video recording, there’s little to criticize. You can freely switch between lenses even at **4K 60fps**, and stabilization is solid. The Pro mode even includes a **LOG profile**, showing this phone’s high ceiling for videography. The only nitpick is that sometimes focus hunting in low light.

Compared to the rear camera, the front cameras aren’t as impressive. They max out at **4K 30fps**, and noise is noticeable in dim lighting. But hey, as long as they don’t ruin your Zoom meetings, the image quality is acceptable—which is probably what HONOR intended.

Design & Experience

Maybe you don’t care about the cameras, but you’re definitely here for the paper-thin body. This is an HK$5 coin, 3.3mm thick. Place it next to the Magic V5, and you’ll see just how absurdly thin this phone is. The slimness is even more apparent when folded. Here’s an iPhone 16 Pro, 8.25mm thick, and the Magic V5 next to it doesn’t look much thicker.

I know, the Z Fold 7 is just as thin. In order to slim it down, Samsung chose not to increase the battery capacity. How about Magic V5？What did HONOR sacrifice to achieve this thinness? Nothing. Nothing compromises. Even the battery got bigger. Except for a slightly lower dust-resistance rating, it’s just like a normal flagship phone. You can’t use weight or thickness as an excuse to avoid using it anymore.

Now, the biggest pain point of foldables: the inner screen experience. Like all foldables, the Magic V5 still hasn’t solved it. It can’t fill the entire screen with videos, and apps not optimized for foldables look awkward. But HONOR still tries to solve these problems the way they do.

For example, the split-screen and multi-window UI is excellent. You think you want this window to be bigger, no problem. That window gets bigger too, no problem. Unlike other brands that have 4 small 1 big multi windows, HONOR wants to let users decide the size of each app. Even if you want to swap the position of the apps or the orientation of the arrangement, you can do it on Magic V5. Together with this small, flexible floating window, you can keep up to 4 apps in the foreground.

The USB is a 3.2 Gen 1 port; of course, it supports video output. And there’s a **PC mode**—though there’s a bug when connecting to ultrawide monitors, the image stretches. But the 16:9 monitors don’t have this problem. Hopefully, this gets fixed in the final software.

Although the Magic V5 can be used like a laptop, by simply unfolding it in half to allow the bottom half to become a keyboard or touchpad. But I’m not a big fan of doing that. In addition to being cut in half because of the display, the outer screen is also susceptible to scratches from desk dust. The keyboard is too small and there’s no way to type with both hands, so if you really want to use it for the office, you’ll have to connect a Bluetooth keyboard at least.

Display

I put the Magic V5 display specs here. As you can see, they are **top-tier across the board**, especially the **PWM dimming frequency**—HONOR remains the only brand pushing ultra-high-frequency PWM for eye comfort. I have to say, their phones have always been the best in the eye care department.

Both the inner and outer screens support a stylus. Just the stylus is something you need to buy separately. As for the crease, after about a month of use, it’s about what you’d expect from an average foldable phone. It has indeed become more noticeable compared to when it was first unboxed, but when viewed straight on, there’s still no visible change.

Bonus: The Magic V5 has **AI-powered foreign object detection**. If anything larger than 0.8mm is on the inner screen, it’ll warn you on the outer screen. Finally, AI does something useful.

Performance

Magic V5 is a foldable phone with a Snapdragon 8 Elite. Peak performance is certainly much better than those phones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, or 8 Elite with one less P-core. It’s not much different from that custom overclocked 8 Elite from the Z Fold 7. But after all, the Magic V5 is still a foldable phone, and combined with its ultra-thin body, gaming performance wouldn’t be great—and Genshin Impact’s frame rate graph confirms it.

Not only does the frame rate quickly lock at 45, but by the end, it shows a tendency to drop further. With the cooling system overloaded, the body temperature reaches nearly 50°C. Fortunately, since my hands grip the lower half, it doesn’t feel too hot during gameplay. So, is the Magic V5 bad for gaming? Not really. Fold it, and magic happens—gaming on the outer screen actually provides a better experience. Smoother, more stable, and cooler. But why? We find this is due to different rendering resolutions between screens.

The inner screen renders twice the resolution of the outer screen, doubling GPU load. Simply put, gaming on the inner screen is like running two identical games simultaneously. Therefore, the correct way to game on the Magic V5 is: for light games, use the inner screen for a larger display and better graphics; for demanding games, use the outer screen for more sustained and smoother gameplay.

Battery & Charging

What makes Magic V5 remarkable? It must: being thinner, the battery is bigger. With fewer foldable phones reviewed recently, we can only compare it to last year’s Magic V3. The progress in battery endurance over this year is quite significant.

Here’s the battery endurance curve from my heaviest usage day – I tried to use the inner screen as much as possible, and primarily used the 5G network. Even with such intensive usage from work start to finish, I didn’t manage to drain its battery.

And if that’s not enough, the Chinese version of 1TB model upgrades the battery to 6100mAh. That’s a whopping 1,700mAh larger than the Z Fold 7! This is the longest-lasting foldable yet. If you’ve got deep pockets, you should take note.

The charging speed isn’t as impressive as the battery capacity, though. 66W wired charging might not sound exceptionally fast, but it can fully charge the phone in under 50 minutes, which is still quite speedy. The Magic V5 hasn’t sacrificed wireless charging despite its thinness, and third-party PD chargers can deliver up to 45W. There’s really nothing to complain about in terms of charging.

Final Thoughts

2025 has been a rough year for foldable fans: Samsung’s Z Fold 7 dropped S Pen support. Xiaomi paused the MIX Fold series. Vivo skipped the X Fold 5 Pro. And OPPO’s Find N5 cut a CPU P-cores. Against this backdrop, the Magic V5’s all-around upgrades—with zero downgrades—are its biggest selling point. Even if it’s a cell phone case, they’ve upgraded to a vegan leather version with a stand. The Chinese pricing matches the Magic V3’s launch price, so hopefully, the global version Magic V5 won’t disappoint us.

The Magic V5 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, built on a 4nm process. It features an octa-core CPU with clock speeds up to 4.32GHz and an Adreno 830 GPU, ensuring top-tier performance across productivity, gaming, and AI tasks.

The device runs MagicOS 9.0.1 (Android 15) with built-in Google Gemini AI, launchable via double-tap. It offers AI tools like real-time translation, transcription, AI Cutout, Image to Video, and Honor Notes. It also features Multi-Flex mode, which enables multitasking with up to three apps at once.

The Chinese tech giant just announced the global release date of the Magic V5. But ahead of its wider release, Honor’s flagship foldable has achieved the Guinness World Record for ‘The Heaviest Weight Lifted by a Suspended Foldable Smartphone’. The Magic V5 managed to show off its strength by lifting a 104 kilograms in weight. To recall, Samsung achieved praises for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 being thin and tough for surviving the JerryRigEverything durability test.

However, this just took things to the next level for foldable smartphones, which aren’t known for being tough. The Guinness World Records officially recognized this feature in Dubai on 1st August 2025. Honor has attributed this record to the Honor Super Steel Hinge, which it claims can withstand up to 500,000 folds even while lifting over 100 kilograms (under controlled conditions).

This is probably the last foldable to be released in 2025, and it’s more likely to be the best one. Ok, this is the first look at the HONOR Magic V5. We are working on the full review right now, and it’s going to be the best foldable review you will ever see this year.

Design

Now Honor is really committed to making the thinnest foldable phone in the world, they are willing to do everything to achieve that. Therefore, the Magic V5 is again thinner than its last gen. And it’s just 4.2 mm unfolded, 8.8 mm folded, it beats its last gen by just about 0.2 to 0.3mm. The most important thing is that, even though it’s thinner, the battery is bigger, and much bigger than the Samsung Z fold 7. You will see more detail in the full review. And put it side by side with some flagship bar phones we have in the studio, when it’s folded, the body is even thinner than some.

From the promotion clips, you probably know that, the way this phone can be this thin is mainly because the battery is very thin. They even compare it to a piece of paper to show how thin it is.

With the thinness out of the way, let’s also look at the design of it. The color we received is called Dawn Gold, I’d like to call it Damn Good. And the nebula pattern at the back, I quite like it. The camera module, it looks even bulkier with such a thin body honestly. It is not a bad thing, we will talk about why in the full review btw. Then the edges of the frame have been sort of flattened out, but still there is a bit of curve. There is a bit of Clous de Paris design around the camera module, very elegant. Performance

As expected, it comes with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, and the performance is better than 99% of the foldables out there. We know foldables tend to not use the best chip, or a downgraded flagship chip. But not for the chip in this phone. We did some tests, compared to the one on the Z fold 7. And there is a surprise in the gaming performance, you should look forward to the result.

Battery

The battery capacity is 5820mAh, here is a comparison between the newest ones from each brand. Now to put it into perspective, it is just about 200mAh shy compared to the Vivo X Fold 5, but you can’t deny that it is thinner, whether folded or unfolded. Not to mention, the battery is 1420mAh larger than the Z Fold 7, I think Samsung should really take a note here.

It supports 66W wired charging, and 55W wireless charging. The charger is included in the package for most areas, but not for the EU.  

Camera

The cameras, again it is the only phone that does not pedal backwards. Here are the camera specs, still flagship level, right? And we found that the camera capability is the only one that isn’t pedaling backwards. The telephoto lens is very good, despite its higher pixel count, the AI zoom is doing a good job. The Ultra Wide is also wide enough to be a true ultra wide camera. Then the video recording capability is also impressive. These are the things I can say, let’s leave some surprises for the full review.

Short Verdict

We are genuinely impressed by the Magic V5 here, because the foldable market is still not that big, yet HONOR is pushing the limits forward. That’s why you can see it is thinner, the battery is bigger, the cameras are better, and it still uses the best chip. We spent a lot of time doing the full review, it should be a good one. This is the slimmest phone in its category, measuring just 8.8mm in thickness when folded.

Despite its slim form factor, it packs a massive 5,820mAh cell, which supports 66W wired and 50W wireless fast charging. There is also an IP58 + IP59 rating for water and dust resistance. For photography, the rear has a 50MP (Main) + 50MP (Ultra Wide) + 64MP (Periscope Telephoto) triple camera setup, while the front houses a dual 20MP shooter on both displays. The main screen is a 7.95-inch panel with while the cover screen is a 6.43-inch screen.

The Honor Magic V5 was announced with a Snapdragon 8 Elite, so you still get top tier performance. Huawei Pura X

Huawei introduced the Pura X as a premium flip phone featuring a 6.3-inch foldable OLED display and a 3.5-inch square external screen. Both displays support 1-120Hz LTPO refresh rate and 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming.

The camera system includes a 50MP RYYB main sensor, a 40MP ultra-wide, an 8MP 3.5x telephoto, and a 1.5MP multi-spectral sensor for enhanced color accuracy. Vivo has launched the X Fold 5 in India with an 8.03-inch 2K+ AMOLED LTPO display and a 6.53-inch FHD+ AMOLED cover screen, both supporting up to 4500 nits brightness and 120Hz refresh rates. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage.

The foldable uses a Carbon Fiber Support Hinge tested for 600,000 folds and offers IPX8, IPX9, and IP5X ratings along with freeze resistance. It includes a triple 50MP rear camera setup using Sony and Samsung sensors and two 20MP front cameras.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Honor Magic V5 are part of a new wave of foldables that push the boundaries of how thin, light, and powerful a foldable phone can be. 

Both arrive with top-tier specs, large folding displays, and premium builds, but each takes a slightly different approach to the foldable concept. The differences may seem minor at first glance, but for anyone looking to spend nearly $2,000 on a phone, those small details matter.

Let’s break it down.

Design and Build

Samsung’s Z Fold 7 takes its usual book-style design and slims it down even further. Folded, it’s just 8.9mm thick; impressively close to the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s 8.2mm. 

Unfolded, the Fold 7 is only 4.2mm, making it the thinnest foldable Samsung has ever made. Also, the phone is incredibly light at 215 grams. There’s an aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass Victus Ceramic 2 on the front and back, and a flexible interior screen protected by a new titanium plate layer.

Honor’s Magic V5 goes even slimmer, at least on paper. The Ivory White model of the foldable is just 8.8mm when folded and 4.1mm unfolded. This is technically slimmer than Samsung’s Fold 7. However, other color variants of the V5 are slightly thicker at 9.0mm. At 217g or 222g, depending on finish, it’s also a touch heavier.

Both phones feel light for their size and come with side-mounted fingerprint sensors, IP ratings for water and dust resistance (IP48 for Samsung, IP58/IP59 for Honor), and stylus support. However, Samsung has dropped S Pen compatibility due to space constraints in its thinner frame.

Displays

Samsung has upgraded the cover screen to 6.5 inches with a 21:9 aspect ratio, making it look and feel more like a traditional smartphone when folded. The inner display is now a full 8 inches, matching the iPad mini in size. Both screens are AMOLED panels with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support.

Honor’s Magic V5 flaunts a 6.43-inch cover display and a 7.95-inch inner screen. Both are LTPO OLEDs with 120Hz refresh rates and have a much brighter peak brightness at 5000 nits, compared to Samsung’s 2600 nits.

The Fold 7 also has a new 10MP ultrawide camera on the main screen. It comes in place of the under-display pixel cluster seen on older models. On the flip side, the crease on the Z Fold 7 is still visible in certain lighting. Honor’s crease is no less noticeable, but its “Super Armored” inner screen may offer better scratch resistance.

Cameras

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 finally gets the flagship camera treatment. It features a 200MP main camera, the same sensor as the S25 Ultra. It’s joined by a 12MP ultrawide and a 10MP 3x telephoto lens. Likewise, both the inner and outer screen has 10MP cameras. The camera setup supports 8K video and up to 960fps slow motion.

The Magic V5 has a 7.95-inch foldable LTPO AMOLED panel and it has a 6.43-inch LTPO OLED cover screen. Under the hood, the device is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of storage.

The Magic V5 has a 20-megapixel cover display camera and a 20-megapixel camera on the internal screen. On the back, the device is fitted with a 50-megapixel main camera with OIS support, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens with autofocus, and a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with OIS support.

According to George Zhao, the Honor Magic V5 will be the world’s lightest and thinnest foldable smartphone. Although he did not disclose precise dimensions, recent leaks indicate the Magic V5 may measure approximately 8mm when unfolded and weigh between 210 and 219 grams.

He added that the Magic V5 will be the most advanced AI-powered device in its category. The phone will support a full-stack personal knowledge system, multi-agent AI collaboration, PC-level productivity, and seamless connectivity across all Honor devices.

Honor has officially confirmed the launch date for its next foldable phone. According to an announcement on its Weibo account, the company will unveil the Honor Magic V5 at a launch event scheduled for CST 19:00 on July 2. The event will also introduce new developments in Honor’s AI terminal ecosystem, though no further details have been shared on that front. 

Ahead of the event, most of the Magic V5’s key hardware specs have already surfaced through leaks.

The device, reportedly codenamed “Maybach,” features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Leading Edition chipset. This is a higher-binned version of the regular 8 Elite that reaches up to 4.47GHz clock speed on its prime core.

The SoC will power a 7.95-inch foldable screen on the inside and a  6.45-inch LTPO OLED 2K panel on the outside. Both displays are expected to support a 120Hz refresh rate.

The Magic V5 is also expected to be a light and thin device. Its predecessor is among the world’s slimmest foldables at just 4.35mm thick when unfolded. However, Vivo’s upcoming X Fold 5 is even thinner at 4.3mm. It would be interesting to see how much slimmer Honor can go with this iteration.

Despite its slim form factor, the foldable is still expected to have a flagship camera setup. It could come with a 50-megapixel main camera with OIS support, an ultra-wide lens, and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera.

The Magic V5 will ship with a new silicon-based battery offering a capacity of between 5950mAh and 6100mAh. This is an upgrade over last year’s Magic V3, which comes with a 5150mAh cell. It will support 66W charging, as confirmed by 3C certification.

According to the listing (via Xpertpick), two models—Honor MTN-AN00 and MTN-AN80—support 80W fast charging, which is an upgrade over the 66W support seen on the Magic V3. This listing also reaffirms rumors of the phone’s imminent launch in China.

To recall, the Magic V3 featured a 5,150mAh silicon-carbon (Si/C) battery. The upcoming Magic V5 is rumored to pack a 6,100mAh unit, thanks to advancements in battery tech. Paired with a more efficient chipset, this should translate to longer battery life and less downtime from charging.

The Magic V5 was also recently spotted in the Geekbench database, confirming the presence of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip—a step up from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 used in the V3. The phone scored over 3,000 and 9,000 in single- and multi-core tests, respectively.

What makes the Magic V5 even more exciting is the rumored 4,400mAh battery on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold7—the same as its predecessor. In contrast, Honor seems to be pushing the boundaries on both battery size and design.

While the Magic V3 measured 4.35/4.4mm when opened and 9.2/9.3mm when closed, the Magic V5 is rumored to go under 9mm when closed. For comparison, the Oppo Find N5, currently the slimmest foldable, comes in at 8.9mm. If the rumors hold true, Honor could reclaim its title as the maker of the slimmest book-style foldable. The listing confirms that the device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, paired with 16GB of RAM, and runs on Android 15. It scored 2976 in the single-core test and 8892 in the multi-core test.

The Magic V5 is expected to feature a 6.45-inch OLED outer screen and an 8-inch foldable inner screen. Both displays are likely to support a 120Hz refresh rate. The phone may offer up to 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage.

It is likely to include a 6,100mAh typical battery with support for 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. On the back, the phone may come with a triple camera setup that includes a 50MP main sensor with OIS, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 200MP periscope telephoto camera.

Other expected features are satellite messaging, IPX8-rated water resistance, and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The Magic V5 is expected to launch in China later this month. Honor is also planning to launch the Magic V2 Flip, a clamshell foldable with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, in July.

This aligns with a common practice among Chinese brands, where the number “4” is often avoided due to tetraphobia – a cultural belief that associates the number with misfortune. Huawei, Honor’s former parent brand, followed a similar path last year by releasing the Mate X5, bypassing the Mate X4.

The Magic V5 is expected to be unveiled in the third or fourth week of June. Product Manager Li Kun has hinted that the upcoming foldable will be thinner than its predecessor, the Magic V3.
