Honor has quietly introduced its latest entry-level smartphone, the Honor Play 10. This model is designed for budget conscious buyers, running on the lightweight version of Android, a 4G chipset, and a sizeable battery to meet the buyer’s everyday use.

The Chinese brand’s latest Play 10 model was announced with a tall 6.74-inch LCD panel with an HD+ resolution. Honor’s budget phone is equipped with the MediaTek Helio G81 SoC, which is paired with up to 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. While the RAM capacity is quite low, the Play 10 runs on the Android Go edition. Meanwhile, the storage can be expanded by up to 1TB via a microSD card slot.

A sizeable 5,000mAh battery pack powers this device, which supports standard 10W charging from the USB Type-C 2.0 port. The Honor Play 10 measures 8.55mm in terms of thickness and weighs 189 grams. The Play 10 also arrives with an IP52 rating, which supports water and dust resistance. Other notable features include a 3.5mm audio jack, an FM radio, Bluetooth 5.1, WiFi 5, and a side mounted fingerprint scanner.

For photography, you get a 13MP camera on the rear and a 5MP selfie shooter. Honor announced the Play 10 in multiple storage configuration, namely Midnight Black, Starry Purple, and Ocean Cyan. As of right now, the pricing details are still at large, but more details should surface soon. In related news, the company’s upcoming flagship Honor Magic 8 Pro is rumored to be the only Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 powered phone with a 3D Face ID.

Honor is expected to stick to its product lineup back from when it was a subsidiary of Huawei. That makes sense considering these phones already have a huge following. Among the popular ones is the Honor Play series, and a company executive has revealed that a new model will arrive next month.

The info was revealed by Wei Xiaolong, the product manager for the Honor Play series, in a Weibo conversation. According to him, the next-gen Honor Play smartphone is coming as soon as next month. He also added that the new phone will have support for fast charging.

Last year, Honor announced the Honor Play4 and Honor Play4 Pro. The standard model launched as a budget 5G mid-range phone with a Dimensity 800 processor, a 64MP quad-camera setup, and a 4300mAh battery with support for 22.5W fast charging.

The Honor Play4 Pro, on the other hand, launched as a flagship phone with a Kirin 990 5G processor under the hood. It has dual front-facing cameras, a 40MP dual rear camera, and a 4200mAh battery that has support for 40W fast charging. The phone also has an IR temperature sensor near the rear cameras that can be used to measure the temperature of people and objects.

It is important to state that Honor also released the Honor Play4T and the Honor Play4T Pro, both of which are 4G smartphones.

We are not sure yet if there will be two Honor Play models planned for release this year or just one. However, what we are most excited about is the chipset that will power the device(s). Will the new Honor Play be the first Honor phone with a Snapdragon processor this year? Time will tell.

A senior executive of Honor, a subsidiary of the Chinese tech giant Huawei, has just revealed certain news regarding a possible launch of a new series, probably in the Play lineup. The launch is also in line with another rumor which mentions an upcoming launch on 21st March 2020, so the conference being held tomorrow could be a possibility.

Earlier this, Guan Haitao, the Vice Minister of Honor’s Marketing, revealed the launch on the Chinese microblogging website, Weibo. In the post, the senior official talked about the company’s growing online and offline market, as work resumes after production lines had previously shut due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Near the end of the post, he goes on to mention that Honor will seek to launch a handset targeted towards the young and enthusiastic demographic; or in other words, the Play series from Honor.

Notably, a Weibo account by the name of @长安数码君 has also reported on a rumor that the Chinese smartphone manufacturer may launch new products on the 21st of March 2020. They are known for prior leaks and rumors that have been fairly accurate, so this may be in line with the post shared by the Honor official. Unfortunately, finer details regarding the smartphone in question, or the series, and even the launch event is currently unknown.

However, we can expect more news to arrive by tomorrow morning or later in the day, through teasers shared by the Honor themselves. The company is already gearing up for an important launch of the new Honor 30S, which is expected to launch by 31st March 2020. The Honor Play launched last year as a gaming flagship phone. It was also the first phone to come with GPU Turbo technology, a software feature that enhances the gaming experience on Honor and Huawei phones and which other manufacturers have also replicated for their devices.

A successor was expected for the Honor Play this year but when the Honor Play 3 launched last month, it didn’t come with a flagship processor but the old mid-range Kirin 710 processor that doesn’t even measure up to the Kirin 970 in the Honor Play. But this is not the worst news for Honor Play owners.

A tweet by Honor India has revealed that the 2018 phone will not receive an update to EMUI 10 that should also bring Android 10 to the device.

Responding to a question by a user on Twitter (@vivesabbani) on if EMUI 10 will arrive for the Honor Play soon, the official Honor India account replied that the “…..EMUI 10.0/Android Q will not be available” for the phone due to “hardware limitations” as it requires “higher hardware specifications for optimal performance”.

This is surprising news since the Honor Play uses the same processor as the Huawei P20 (and Huawei P20 Pro) and Honor 10 which have all been confirmed to get EMUI 10 here and here respectively. Even the Honor V10/ View10 released in December 2017 will get EMUI 10.

A lot of owners have expressed their displeasure at the news with some saying they would not be purchasing Honor phones in the future.

Honor is yet to release a statement explaining the hardware limitations that actually prevent the Honor Play from getting the update, so we cannot provide a technical reason yet. Once there is one, we will make sure to inform our readers.

The Honor Play has a 6.3-inch FHD+ display with a wide notch at the top. The Kirin 970 processor is paired with 4GB or 6GB of RAM with 64GB of storage on both versions. It has a 16MP + 2MP dual-camera setup on the back and a 16MP selfie camera. There is a fingerprint scanner on its back and a 3750mAh battery with support for 18W fast charge.

When it launched in July, it ran Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. Honor later upgraded it to Android 9 Pie when it got the EMUI 9 update.

The first-generation Honor Play smartphone was an important device for the company. It was the first gaming flagship from Honor and came with technologies such as GPU Turbo and 4D gaming at a very attractive price tag. While we haven’t heard much about its successor, it looks like Honor could skip a generation to call it the Honor Play 3.

Recently, an alleged box of the Honor Play 3 was spotted in China and shared on Weibo. Seeing this box, it is being speculated that the company has decided to name it the Play 3. Unfortunately, we aren’t really sure of its authenticity. The alignment of the words Play 3 seems a bit off. However, even if this leak isn’t real, there’s a good possibility that we might see Play’s successor at the September 4 Honor 20S event.

Honor’s Zhao Ming has already confirmed that we’ll meet one more device alongside the Honor 20S at the event. The Honor Play was announced back in July 2018, which means a successor to the device is already past due.

As for the Honor 20S, it is said to feature Kirin 810 chipset with 3750mAh battery, 6GB /8GB RAM and a 6.26-inch display. While the phone should offer tremendous value for its price, it remains to be seen how the trade ban will affect the new Honor devices outside of China. Huawei is already said to delay the international release of the Mate 30 Pro since it doesn’t have a license from Google to install its apps.

But it’s worth adding that while Google apps won’t come pre-installed on Mate 30 series models, users can always download and install these apps once they get the phone.

A few months ago, Huawei has unveiled its all-new EMUI 9.0 custom interface which is based on the latest Android 9 Pie operating system with a few AI-based functions. The company has already released EMUI 9 update to several Huawei and Honor smartphones in China.

Now, after rolling out the update in its home country, Huawei has today announced through Twitter that it will soon start rolling out the new Android Pie-based EMUI 9 to international models, including Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, P20, P20 Pro, Honor Play, Honor View 10, and Honor 10.

According to a few media reports, users in Singapore and the United Kingdom have already started receiving the new EMUI 9 update. The new update should soon be available to users in other regions as well. For users who are upgrading, the size of the update is about 4GB while for those who are currently on the EMUI 9 Beta, the package size is about 770MB.

The EMUI 9.0 update brings various new changes along with all the features of Android 9 Pie. The customized skin comes with plenty of bug fixes and enhancements over the EMUI 8.0. The new user interface is better optimized for full view displays and carries additional AI-based features.

It also brings the Computer Mode Version 2.0, wireless universal screen projection through Miracast, one-click screen capture, and HuaweiShare for faster file transfers, among others. There is also a new password manager capable of auto-filling passwords using ID verification from the fingerprint scanner or via facial recognition.

The settings menu has been trimmed down by 10 percent. It also comes with GPU Turbo 2.0 which reduces the touch response of the phone by 36 percent and adds a new app assistant. This new GPU Turbo 2.0 introduces support for four more games: Vainglory, Arena of Valor, Rules of Survival, and NBA 2K18, in addition to PUBG and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.

Since the update is based on Android Pie, it also gets navigation gestures. Among other features, the Android Pie also comes with Adaptive Battery which makes use of machine learning technology to improve the phone’s power management.

The update is also rolling out to the Honor View 10, Honor 10, and Honor Play. There is even a report that the Honor View 10 is receiving the update in India.

EMUI 9.0 not only brings Android 9 Pie but also brings some new features. There is a new gesture navigation and also HiVision which is just like Google Lens but with some neat tricks of its own such as calorie identification in foods. The overall UI has also changed, system response speed is said to have increased by 25.8%, and there is now support for multiple back ups to various storage devices.

The smartphones market is moving every day more towards midrange devices as they offer a much higher quality-price ratio. But there is another niche of devices which contains some of the most-wanted phones: affordable flagships. Xiaomi Pocophone F1, Honor Play and Asus Zenfone 5z had a big impact in the market because they offer flagship-class hardware components at a midrange price. Here is a specs comparison between them.

Design

The design is not the strongest point of the Xiaomi Pocophone F1. In order to cut costs, Xiaomi decided to opt for a full polycarbonate body which is the cheapest material it could choose. Asus Zenfone 5z has the most original aesthetics with a full metal unibody design and an elegant brushed effect, while Huawei Honor Play sits in the middle with a full metal body and U-shaped antenna bands.

Display

Asus Zenfone 5z is a step forward when it comes to display quality because it sports a more accurate color reproduction thanks to its 96 percent DCI-P3 coverage. Xiaomi Pocophone F1 and Honor Play have midrange-class IPS panels which offer nothing special in terms of viewing quality, but they are sufficient.

Specs & Software

Basing on my tests, Xiaomi Pocophone F1 provides better performance thanks to its Snapdragon 845, up to 8 GB of RAM and an optimized version of MIUI with gaming-centric features. The second place belongs to Asus Zenfone 5z which is almost at the same level, while Honor Play’s Kirin 970 behaves slightly worse than Snapdragon 845.

Camera

Asus Zenfone 5z has surely the most interesting cameras. Unlike its opponents, it features optical stabilization, and it even has wide angle lenses both on the front and on the back. Xiaomi Pocophone F1 and Honor Play are more or less at the same less (with Pocophone F1 being slightly better in some scenario) with a mediocre quality.

Battery

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 has a huge 4000 mAh battery which provides several hours of nonstop gaming. It is the longest lasting and it is followed by Huawei Honor Play and its 3750 mAh unit. At the last place, we find the Asus Zenfone 5z with an average 3350 mAh battery.

Price

If we consider price, Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is definitely the device with the best value for money because of its great performance and battery (you can get it for about €300/$343). But overall, Asus Zenfone 5z is the best phone of the trio, even though it costs about €450/$515. Honor Play offers a good design and builds quality at (more or less) the same price as the Xiaomi Pocophone F1, so it is a bit more balanced.

Honor has started rolling out the EMUI 9 update that brings Android Pie to some of its devices. The update is being pushed out to the Honor 10 GT, the Honor Play, and the Honor V10.

In a poster shared on its Weibo page yesterday, Huawei said the update not only brings Android 9 Pie to the three phones but also brings version 2.0 of its GPU Turbo technology.

According to the info on the poster, GPU Turbo 2.0 brings improved optimization to 8 new games including the popular multiplayer online battle arena game, King of Glory. It also increases system response by 25.8%.

EMUI 9 brings a ton of new features such as a new navigation mode, HiVision – a feature similar to Google Lens but that also works with foods by telling you their calorie content. There is also the Digital Balance app, their own version of Digital Wellbeing and a new recent apps menu.

The Honor Play was the first phone to come with GPU turbo technology when it was announced this year, It is also the most recent of the three devices. It has a 6.3-inch LCD display, a Kirin 970 processor like the other two phones, and 4GB/6GB of RAM. Storage is 64GB but expandable via a MicroSD card slot. It has dual rear cameras (16MP + 2MP), a 16MP selfie camera, and a 3750mAh battery.

The Honor 10 GT and V10 have 5.84 and 5.99-inch displays respectively. The V10 has 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of storage and the Honor 10 GT has 8GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of storage.

The Honor 10 GT has a 24MP selfie camera and a 16MP + 24MP dual rear camera configuration while the V10 has a 13MP selfie camera and 16MP + 20MP dual rear cameras. Their fingerprint scanners are below the display, unlike the Honor Play which has its own on the back.

The Honor V10’s larger display gets it a bigger battery (3,750mAh) while the Honor 10 GT has a 3,400mAh battery. However, both support 5V/4.5A fast charging.

Design

I like Nokia 7.1 because besides being original, it is a very compact phone and it fits very well in a pocket. It comes with a glass back, a notch and the Gorilla Glass 3 protection and it is the most interesting when it comes to aesthetics and build quality. I put Huawei Mate 20 Lite at the second place, but it is still a very original device with elegant looks, while Honor Play is just a classic metal unibody handset.

Display

Nokia 7.1 has definitely the most interesting display as it supports the HDR10 technology for richer colors. However, note that this is also the smallest panel of the trio as the other two devices have a wide 6.3-inch screen which could be more comfortable for advanced users.

Specs & Software

Honor Play is the best smartphone in terms of hardware as it can offer flagship-level performance. Indeed, it has the Kirin 970 chipset that is the same you can find on the Huawei P20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro. It is also the first phone with the GPU Turbo technology which enhances graphics performance by up to 60 percent while reducing energy consumption by up to 30 percent. Nokia 7.1 and Huawei Mate 20 Lite are more or less at the same level, with their midrange SoCs. Nokia 7.1 has Android One installed (with faster and constant updates), while Huawei phones come with the highly customized EMUI.

Camera

The best camera sensors are on board of the Huawei Mate 20 Lite: it features a total of four cameras, two on the front and two on the back, and both setups come with high resolutions. Both the rear and the front camera setups have a wide angle sensor to increase the field of view and they capture stunning details.

Battery

Huawei Mate 20 Lite and Honor Play have a 3750 mAh battery, almost 700 mAh bigger than the lithium unit of the Nokia 7.1. So, they will probably last much more than its opponent. On the other hand, Nokia 7.1 is able to charge faster due to its smaller battery. And even though it has just 3060 mAh unit, it should be optimized nicely with Android One and it should provide a good battery life due to the very efficient SoC.

Price

With the actual price, Nokia 7.1 does not convince me so much like other HMD Global’s devices and I believe there is something better, such as Honor Play, in this price range. You should choose it if you want the best performance, while if you care more about the cameras, then go for the Huawei Mate 20 Lite. Nokia 7.1 starts from €319 (which roughly translates into $367), Huawei Mate 20 Lite can be purchased for less than €400 or $460 (even €350 thanks to street prices) and Honor Play currently costs about €320 or $360. Before being the winner of this comparison, the Honor Play is also the most convenient device you can get in this trio. If you want to know another device with a similar level of performance, check the Xiaomi Pocophone F1.

A few days ago, Honor India released a teaser hinting at a new color variant for the Honor Play. The new color variant launched today and its called Ultra Violet.

With the addition of the new color variant, the Honor Play is now available in three colors including Black and Blue. The Ultra Violet color variant is only available in 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM. There is no info on a 6GB RAM variant. The new color variant will be an Amazon India exclusive. It will sell for INR 19,999 and go on sale on October 3.

The Honor Play was launched in China back in July before making its way to India in August. It has a 6.3-inch 1080 x 2340 screen with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. There is a Kirin 970 chipset under the hood along with up to 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

The Honor Play is the first phone to come with  Honor’s GPU Turbo technology which enhances the GPU performance of Huawei and Honor phones when gaming. It also has 4D gaming, dual rear cameras (16MP + 2MP), and a 16MP selfie camera. It packs a 3750mAh battery and runs EMUI 8.2 based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

While the new Ultra Violet variant does look good, I still prefer the special edition models with laser engraved designs. Sadly, those variants are exclusive to China.

Soon after the launch of Honor Play in India, various other smartphones including the Poco F1 have arrived in the market. To extend the popularity of the Honor Play, the company has decided to introduce a color variant for it. As of this writing, there is no confirmation on when the company will begin the sales of the Violet Honor Play smartphone. Also, there is no information on its pricing. Like the other color edition of the smartphone, the Violet model may also hit the market in 4 GB and 6 GB RAM options.

At present, the 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM variant of the Honor Play is available in India for Rs. 19,999 (~$275). The higher model with 64 GB storage + 6 GB RAM is priced at Rs. 23,999 (~$331).

The Honor Play smartphone that is powered by Kirin 970 is advertised as a gaming smartphone. For better gaming experience, the Honor Play features GPU Turbo for accelerated graphics performance. Other gaming features on the phone include 4D Gaming and Smart Shock for haptic feedback.

Today, the company has confirmed through Weibo on the arrival of Honor Play’s 128 GB storage model, Honor 10 GT’s Lily White color edition and Honor V10’s 8 GB RAM variant.

Honor 10 GT is the first ever Honor smartphone to feature 8 GB of RAM. Honor V10 is a 2017 flagship phone that was unveiled in last November. Today, the company has announced the arrival of new variant for Honor V10 that includes 128 GB of storage + 8 GB RAM.

The 8 GB RAM Honor V10 has carries a price tag of 3,299 Yuan (~$479). It can be bought in multiple colors like Beach Gold, Aurora Gold, Magic Nigh Black, Charm Red and Dazzling Blue.

Honor Play is the first phone from the company to come with GPU Turbo technology that accelerates the GPU performance by 60 percent. It was made available in June in variants such as 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage + 6 GB RAM. These models are now selling with respective pricings of 1,899 Yuan (~$275) and 2,299 Yuan (~$333).

The newly announced 128 GB storage variant of the Honor Play includes 6 GB of RAM. It is priced at 2,399 Yuan and it can be bought in colors like Midnight Black, Aurora Blue, Nebula Purple and Charm Red.

In June, Honor announced Honor Play smartphone, the first one from the company that featured GPU Turbo technology. It was launched in two variants — 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB + 64GB storage.

A couple of days ago, we reported that the Chinese manufacturer could launch a new variant of the Honor Play. Now, the company has announced that the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage model has been upgraded and now packs 128GB internal storage.

While the phone’s storage capacity has been increased, the pricing still remains same — 2,399 Yuan, which roughly converts to $349. It is available in three color options — Nebula Purple, Aurora Blue, and Midnight Black.

The Honor Play comes with a 6.3-inch Full HD+ display featuring a notch and 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution. It is powered by the company’s own Kirin 970 octa-core processor with NPU and Mali-G72 MP12 graphics processor. The GPU Turbo technology enhances GPU performance significantly by increasing graphics processing efficiency by up to 60 percent.

On the back panel, there’s a dual-camera setup for photography, consisting of a 16-megapixel f/2.2 primary sensor paired with a 2-megapixel f/2.4 secondary depth sensor with support for AI shooting and AR gestures. On the front side, the phone comes equipped with a 16-megapixel f/2.0 sensor for taking selfies.

There’s a fingerprint sensor on the back panel. The Face Unlock feature on the phone uses artificial intelligence that the company claims helps in adapting to different lightings and minute facial changes for accuracy.

It includes a microSD card slot that enables phone’s storage expansion up to 256GB. Connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, GPS, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 3.5 mm headphone jack, and USB Type-C.

The device comes with 4D gaming experience, powered by the same GPU Turbo technology. It can detect a number of gaming scenes including shots, explosions, and quakes. The phone also reportedly features a special film on its screen to reduce reflection and improve gaming experience under the light.

Together with the Honor Note 10, Honor Play is the latest Honor flagship launched by Huawei and it is a smartphone which focuses on gaming and high performance. After launching the Huawei Nova 3, the company has just confirmed through a post on Weibo that it will be launching a huge update for this phone on August 13. The post comes with a teaser image attached, but it does not reveal which kind of update the company is talking about. It is not possible to understand whether it will be a hardware or a software update. In the first case, we may see the launch of a new variant of the Honor Play with a different memory configuration.

According to the most reliable hypothesis, Huawei may launch the flagship in a version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, which would be the most expensive one as the ones available now boast 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. It makes sense as the flagship only exists with 64 GB of internal storage. If it is a software update, it may be related to the new CPU Turbo technology announced with the Honor Note 10. In case you do not know, this device is the first to come with the GPU Turbo technology, allowing an increase in performance by up to 60 percent with up to 30% reduction in energy consumption.

But recently Huawei announced the CPU Turbo technology and this has still not been rolled out on the Honor Play. The handset is currently available in China with a price tag of 1999 Yuan, which roughly translates into $292 at the actual change. It features a notched display with a size of 6.3 inches and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, as well as a powerful octa-core Kirin 970 chipset running at a max frequency of 2.4 GHz (same SoC as the Huawei P20 Pro).

After launching Honor Play gaming-centric smartphone in India for the starting price of Rs. 19,999, the company is now planning to launch the phone in Pakistan by the end of this month.

Honor Pakistan has even uploaded a video of Honor Play on its YouTube channel, indicating the intentions of the company to launch the device in Pakistan. However, the exact launch date of the phone is not yet known.

Reports suggest that the phone will be made available in two colors — Midnight Black and Aurora Blue and will carry a price tag of PKR 43,000 (approximately $350), which is way higher than the Indian pricing and slightly higher than the Chinese MSRP at launch.

Being a gaming-centric smartphone, the device comes with a few gaming-related features, including the company’s recently launched GPU Turbo technology that increases graphics processing efficiency to 60% with a 30% reduction in power consumption.

Honor Play was launched in China last month. Today, as promised, Huawei’s sub-brand has launched the same gaming-centric smartphone in the Indian market. The phone will be available in two color options — Midnight Black and Navy Blue.

The 4GB RAM model costs Rs. 19,999 (approximately $291) while the 6GB RAM model is priced at Rs. 23,999, which roughly converts to $349. It will be available exclusively via Amazon India and Honor Store from today 4:00 PM.

Note that the Mi A2 will surely win in terms of updates as it is supported directly by Google with fast and constant long-term updates. But Honor Play is the winner in terms of sheer hardware and performance.

While Honor Play provides better hardware performance, Xiaomi Mi A2 is a way superior phone when it comes to photo quality. It has a 12 + 20 MP dual camera with a very bright f/1.8 aperture. Honor has announced that it will put up a new special edition of the Honor Play on August 1. The Honor Play Special Edition will be available in two colours – Enchanting Red and Magic Night Black. Both variants will be priced at 2,499 yuan ($366) and will be sold simultaneously on Jingdong, Tmall and other platforms. 

The main difference between the regular Honor Play and this special edition is the appearance. Honor disclosed that this new edition will come with a laser engraved back design. The teaser poster which accompanied the device contains the photo of the device, giving us a clear view of its looks. Beautiful geometric lines are engraved on the back, right from the bottom to the top. The camera and fingerprint sensor have a red accent both on the Red and Black colored variants.

Announced back in May, the Honor Play has now received its first price cut since it went on sale. UNBOXING

The phone ships with all the usual items and some extras include a soft TPU case.

DESIGN and DISPLAY

The notch display is one of the highlights of the phone and it is a great, sharp and a large panel. Sunlight legibility is not the best but it’s decent.

The phone feels very premium in the hand because its all metal construction and the build quality is excellent. One of the drawbacks of the matte black color is that it attracts fingerprints very quickly and it’s really hard to clean them but I guess that’s the shortcoming you can live with.

The AI camera is another highlight of this device as it uses two sensors but as usual, I will talk about image quality a bit later in this review.  There is a beefy 16MP selfie shooter that sits next to the notification LED light.

Other features you need to know: the fingerprint scanner is very accurate and blazing fast, and the phone has face unlock feature that is also pretty good. There is also a hybrid dual-SIM card tray, a headset jack that provides good sound quality and quite good loudspeaker. Here is an audio sample.

HARDWARE and PERFORMANCE

The Honor Play has a powerful Kirin 970 CPU that is accompanied by the new turbo GPU.

The phone is advertised to give you 4D gaming experience but I can’t tell the difference between this and other phones. What I can tell you is that the overall gaming performance is just excellent. I played quite a few 3D games on the highest graphics settings and the phone just flies through everything. Even the Pubg on the highest graphics works absolutely fine. Flagship grade performance.

USER INTERFACE

The phone ships with the EMUI 8.2 which is based on Android 8.1.

In general, the Honor Play looks and feels like a Huawei phone in terms of user interface. Since I have a Chinese model, my phone shipped without Google Services pre-installed and there were plenty of bloatware apps. A good thing is that it takes just a minute to install Google Services and all the bloatware apps can be removed.

Just like any Huawei phone, there are plenty of features and customization options to choose from. There are many display settings, smart features, you can choose between different navigation ways and so on. In general, the phone feels very fast and smooth all the time, very good overall performance.

IMAGE QUALITY

The overall image quality is very good. The pictures are sharp and vibrant, and there is plenty of detail. Every time you take a picture, the AI recognizes the scene and applies the best image settings.

I found the AI to do a pretty good job but usually, the pictures come out with a high-contrast and colors that are a bit too punchy. On the other hand, the images tend to have a wow factor which is a must for social media.

Portrait or wide-aperture pictures look quite nice too as the object is nicely separated from the background with just minimal artifacts.

Selfies usually come out nice and sharp and portrait mode does a decent job with the bokeh effect.

Low-light is where I expected a better performance out of this phone. I can’t say the images look bad but I expected pictures to have less noise and more detail.

4K video quality is pretty good. The only complaint is that there is no image stabilization, so the footage is a bit shaky.

1080p selfie video looks great as the footage has plenty of detail. Also, the sound recording quality is quite decent.

CONNECTIVITY

In terms of connectivity, the Honor Play is excellent. Call quality and signal reception have been great, GPS is very accurate and other connectivity options work fine. There are quite a few sensors including a gyroscope.

BATTERY LIFE

Battery life has been great. My record screen-on time was about 10 hours and my usage involved taking a lot of pictures, using the phone for social media and a bit of gaming.

Also, it takes just about 1,5h to fully charge the phone with the supplied fast charger.

CONCLUSIONS

Overall, the Honor Play shapes up to be a solid phone that has a lot of premium features for the price of about $370.

Low-light image quality could be better but other than that, you get a premium-looking phone with a nice display, excellent day-to-day and gaming performance, solid cameras and good battery life.

I’m not going to assert this is the only phone you need to buy but the Honor Play is a very solid option that has quite a few flagship features for the price. Therefore, I can definitely suggest you check it out.

Before we move on to the basic specs details, let’s take a look at what makes the Honor Play special.

The new Honor flagship is basically a gaming centric smartphone. It’s the first Honor device to feature the revolutionary GPU Turbo technology that enhances GPU performance significantly by increasing graphics processing efficiency by up to 60%. This results in better gaming performance than flagships such as the Xiaomi Mi 8, iPhone X, and even the Mi Mix 2S. The company revealed that the phone manages to beat these flagships in terms of frame rate and jitters, thereby giving an enhanced gaming experience on the device.

Further, the phone boasts of 4D gaming experience, powered by the same GPU Turbo technology. 4D gaming is possible because the Honor Play can detect a number of gaming scenes including shots, explosions and quakes. You also get a 3D sound experience, so you’ll be able to clearly locate the angle of firing. The phone also reportedly features a special film on its screen to reduce reflection and improve gaming experience under light. It also features in-game network optimisation which promises seamless shift from Wi-Fi to mobile data in order to ensure uninterrupted gameplay.

Now coming to the standard stuff, the phone has a 6.3-inch FHD+ 2340 x 1080 display with a notch on top. Unlike other Honor flagships, this one features a metal back and U shaped antenna lines. The dual cameras are located on the left side while the fingerprint sensor lies around the centre at the back. There are three color options: Nebula Purple, Aurora Blue, and Midnight Black.

The Honor Play features the Kirin 970 chipset (Mali-G72 MP12) inside in two memory configurations (expandable up to 256GB): 4GB + 64GB and 6GB + 64GB. The rear dual camera setup is average, featuring a 16MP f/2.2 primary sensor paired with a 2MP f/2.4 secondary depth sensor with support for AI shooting and AR gestures. On the front, there’s a 16MP f/2.0 sensor for selfies.

The phone has a decent 3750mAh battery inside which should be good enough for a day’s worth of gaming. Other features include Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi ac, and GPS. The phone is running on EMUI 8.2 based on Android 8.1 OS.

Honor Play is cheaper than the flagship Honor 10 model and starts at 1999 Yuan ($312) for the 4GB + 64GB variant. The 6GB + 64GB variant will cost 2399 Yuan ($375). There’s a special Honor Play Cool limited edition with a special back design that retails for 2499 Yuan ($390). The regular editions go on sale on June 11 in China, while the special limited Cool edition will go on sale in July. One more thing, you get a free TPU case inside the box.

Further, it brings HDR picture quality and special effects in gaming making the overall experience rich and fluid.

The company managed to achieve this by restructuring the traditional graphics framework at the lower level system. The technology relies on hardware-software integrated GPU acceleration. It will benefit mobile games that require high level of graphics processing efficiency. Honor adds that GPU Turbo can support AR and VR in the future and it can be applied in the sectors including virtual teaching, online shopping and telemedicine.

To put very simply, it looks like Huawei has found a way to tweak how the GPU handles graphics processing to enhance its efficiency to a significant extent. Think of this tech as a smartphone turbocharger. What’s really exciting is that the existing hardware will also get the benefit of the GPU Turbo. Considering how a lot of Honor and Huawei smartphones feature the same chipset, it’s likely that a number of Honor phones will get this new technology.

GPU Turbo will first make it to the Honor Play smartphone that was announced today. Other Honor devices including Honor 10, Honor View 10, Honor 9 Lite and Honor 7X are confirmed to get this technological upgrade soon. Huawei’s Honor sub-brand has an event scheduled for June 6 and on that day it is expected to release a game-changing phone called the Honor Play. There are have been rumors on what features to expect but we haven’t heard anything about the pricing until now.

A photo has surfaced on the web and it shows a hand-drawn poster in a Chinese gadget store. From the poster, we can make out the name – Honor Play,  the launch date which is June 6, and a price tag – ¥3299 (~$514).

While we advise that you take the above price with a grain of salt, it actually isn’t outrageous. Most affordable flagship phones are priced around that range.

There is still a lot we do not know about the Honor Play but we can agree that its price tag does seem reasonable for a flagship phone. Sadly, we don’t see it coming with a more powerful chipset other than the Kirin 970.

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has confirmed that it will be launching the Honor Play smartphone on June 6. It is said to be technologically advanced phone that promises to deliver groundbreaking experience. However, the company is yet to confirm on what sort of advanced features will it be offering on it. It is speculated that the smartphone will offer AI-based 4D gaming and AI camera features. Huawei’s chairman Yu Chengdong has described the speed of the Honor Play by using the metaphor “flying in the sky.” New images that surfaced on suggest that the Kirin SoC of the phone will be assisted by Kirin OS.

Following the recently imposed 7-year ban on ZTE that prevents the Chinese firm from exporting components and software from the U.S., Huawei has been working on its own operating system claims the tipster who has shared the below images. There is no confirmation on whether the smartphone shown below is the Honor Play phone. The smartphone can be seen sporting a notched display. Also, the June 6 date present on the screen happens to be the launch date of Honor Play. Its mentioned at the bottom of its screen that it is running on Kirin OS that is powered by Linux.

The other image reveals that the handset supports Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels which is quite odd considering the smartphone shown above has a notched display. The version of the operating system that is loaded on the phone is mentioned as Kirin OS 1.0. It seems to be an old screenshot as the date 2015 is mentioned in the kernel version.

Also, rumors about the Kirin OS had surfaced in 2015. Since there are some discrepancies in the image, it is advisable to take this report with a grain of salt.

Nothing much is known on the specs and features of the Honor Play. Rumors have it that it could be equipped with a 5G modem. Its launch event will be held at Beijing University Gymnasium. The very same platform will be also used another upper mid-range phone called Honor 9i.

The Honor 9i is expected to arrive with a notched display design that will support an aspect ratio of 19:9. It will be featuring 5.84-inch screen that will support FHD+ resolution. It is speculated to be fueled by the Kirin 960 chipset.

It is expected to arrive in storage models like 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB and all of them are likely to feature 4 GB of RAM. For more storage, it will feature a microSD card. The handset will be loaded with Android 8.1 Oreo and EMUI 8 skin. It will be fueled by 2,900mAh battery. For photography, it features 13-megapixel + 2-megapixel dual camera setup and a frontal shooter of 16-megapixel.

We expect the details about Huawei’s breakthrough technology to emerge soon as the company is reportedly going to reveal details and showcase the technology today at an event. Currently, it is not known if the company’s new breakthrough is in the hardware or the software department.

Yu Chengdong, Chairman of Huawei Device, recently announced that this breakthrough technology will mark as the company’s landmark for 2018 and also said that the technology will significantly improve the performance of its products.

Describing the effect of this upcoming technology, Yu Chengdong said that difference in speed of mobile phones is equivalent to the difference between “running on the ground” and “flying in the sky.” If it’s in the hardware department, it could be something related to an independent NPU module for faster and efficient Machine learning. If it’s in the software department, it could be something related to its operating system.
