The collaboration&#8217;s framework agreement was officially signed by a health care institute and research center that is led by Zhong Nanshan.</p>
<p>The three parties including Huami will use the wrist wearables technology and artificial intelligence powered algorithms alongside medical expertise to bring about advancement in the field. The collaboration will have the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease carry out various tests to map a person&#8217;s exercise, sleep, heart rate, and rehabilitation prognosis. In other words, develop a system that can detect the coronavirus infection and support early warning systems.</p>

<p>According to medical experts at the research center, the process of having followed up treatment or rehabilitation programs for recently discharged patients is difficult. Thus, by using Huami&#8217;s wrist wearables sensing technology, its AI powered algorithms and more, the medical institute can essentially detect any health complications, not just limited to the coronavirus infection.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/09/smartphone-brands-are-downsizing-offline-workers-and-seeking-rent-waivers-in-india/">Smartphone brands are downsizing offline workers and seeking rent waivers in India</a></strong></h6>
<p>The project is being undertaken by the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease and Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health along with Huami. For those unaware, Huami is a major brand in the wearables department, and its wealth of database regarding human activity through its wearable offerings will be a perfect match.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-282205" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS.png?x23692" alt="Huami Amazfit GTS" width="735" height="425" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS.png 735w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS-300x173.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS-696x402.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS-726x420.png 726w" sizes="(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px" /></p>
<p>Notably, Zhong Nanshan is one of China&#8217;s top experts on respiratory diseases. He was one of the pioneers during the Sars virus epidemic back in 2002-2003 and is also currently advising <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a>, who is ramping up its production again in China. So, on one side we have medical experts and on the other, we have the existing technology which has the potential to detect medical complications. The applications have great potential, as future smartwatches could soon detect infections and other respiratory diseases as well.</p>

Huami is one such company that deals in the former category and has historically been backed by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a>, the smartphone manufacturer.</p>
<p>However, the company stated in an <span class="notranslate">annual strategic media communications</span> meeting today that it had not signed any exclusive deal or agreement with Xiaomi regarding the latter&#8217;s Mi Band lineup of smart wearables.</p>
<figure id="attachment_276843" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-276843" style="width: 660px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-276843 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4.png?x23692" alt="Huami Xiaomi Mi Band 4" width="660" height="487" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4.png 660w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4-300x221.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4-80x60.png 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/mi-band-4-watchfaces-4-569x420.png 569w" sizes="(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-276843" class="wp-caption-text">Xiaomi Mi Band 4</figcaption></figure>
<p>Earlier this year, Xiaomi launched the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi-mi-band-4/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mi Band 4</a> in China. Promptly after this, reports surfaced that suggested that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/08/20/huami-working-on-mi-band-5/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huami was already working on the 5th installment</a> in the series. The CEO of Huami confirmed that both companies have been &#8220;co-working&#8221; on multiple projects in a partnership but are not signed under an exclusive deal to manufacture or develop Xiaomi wearable products.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/03/xiaomi-mi-10-pro-moniker-confirmed-by-xiaomi-president/">Buy Xiaomi Smart Rubik Cube for Just $24.99 from Giztop</a></strong></h6>
<p>Xiaomi Mi Band 4Huang Wang, the CEO also stated that there has been a misunderstanding of the cooperation between Huami and Xiaomi. To back this statement, he even mentioned that the two companies are preferred partners under the same conditions which favor both sides. This indicates a two-way choice between the two partner companies.</p>
<figure id="attachment_282205" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-282205" style="width: 735px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-282205 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS.png?x23692" alt="Huami Amazfit GTS" width="735" height="425" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS.png 735w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS-300x173.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS-696x402.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Huami-Amazfit-GTS-726x420.png 726w" sizes="(max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-282205" class="wp-caption-text">Huami Amazfit GTS</figcaption></figure>
<p>In other words, Huami has not been contracted by Xiaomi to develop the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mi-band-5/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mi Band 5</a> but are collaborating due to extended partnership. The two companies are distinctly independent but collaborate often owing to healthy business relations. Notably, the Mi Band 4 lacked prominent feature like NFC and microphone support in its global versions so it will be interesting to see what improvements the collaboration brings to the latest Xiaomi&#8217;s smart wearable.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/huami-3.jpg?x23692"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-172373" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/huami-3.jpg?x23692" alt="" width="479" height="638" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/huami-3.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/huami-3-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/huami-3-768x1024.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px" /></a></p>
<p>While taking at the event, Mr. Wang revealed that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huami">Huami</a> will launch a &#8220;Revolutionary&#8221; wearable smart device in 2019. Unfortunately, he didn&#8217;t divulge any more information about the upcoming gadget. But judging from his comments at the event, where he stated that &#8220;smartwatches will replace smartphones in the future&#8221;, we could be looking at something really exciting from the company. If you remember, back at IFA, Nubia showed off its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/08/31/nubia-%CE%B1-is-a-concept-smartphone-that-comes-with-a-flexible-screen-in-a-smartband-like-design/">Nubia Alpha concept wearable</a>, which was essentially a smartphone on the wrist. Huami could be aiming to release a similar smart device next year, but as of now, this is just a speculation.</p>

<p>Talking about the recently released <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/09/17/huami-huangshan-no-1-world-first-ai-powered-wearable-chipset/">Huangshan -1 chip for wearables</a>, Mr. Wang added that it can screen the HR patterns of users via cloud-based AI. This helps to monitor the user&#8217;s heart rate carefully and check for any unusual patterns. Moreover, it looks like Huami is aiming to get the Huangshan &#8211; 1 chip on other wearable manufacturers in the market as well. So, it won&#8217;t be just limited to the company&#8217;s own smartwatches.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>He also gave out some essential sales figures about the company&#8217;s recent devices. Until 2017, Huami&#8217;s total sales surpassed 18.1 million and user base was well above 56.1 million. Further, the recently released Mi Band 3 has managed to sell more than 10K units in the past five months alone. Even the Mi Band 2, which enjoyed a long stay in the market (Mi Band 3 had a pretty late release), sold more than 30 million units worldwide. Note that these figures are before the 11/11 singles day, where both these devices could have garnered a lot more sales.</p>
<p>Mr. Wang also added that just like Xiaomi, Huami too does not want to be tagged as a hardware company. He said that people consider Huami to be a hardware firm, however, the company positions itself as a sports and health big data firm. If you recall, time and again Xiaomi has positioned itself as an internet company, and not a hardware company. Further talking about Huami&#8217;s relationship with Xiaomi, he adds that both the companies work very closely and have interconnected ecosystems.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Finally, he revealed that the company&#8217;s overseas operations have been quite strong and Europe is now its second biggest market after China.</p>
