Huawei has apparently been planning on spinning off its consumer electronics business unit. Rumors have been going around about the company making this major move, so here are all the details.

Based on new reports, the Chinese tech giant is supposedly considering splitting the consumer business group and even transferring some research and development of its mobile phone operations to its former subsidiary Honor. For those unaware, Huawei had to sell off its budget sub-brand since it was hit with various sanctions by the US government that hampered its smartphone operations. So now, it is rumored that it is planning on shifting more of its operations to Honor.

However, the company’s consumer business is an integral part of its efforts sin the enterprise market. Thus, the rumor regarding the brand making a large scale spin off regarding its consumer business appears to be highly unlikely. At the moment, the revenue scale of Huawei’s consumer business has dropped significantly. But despite, the company has still maintained its lineup of notebooks, desktops, tablets, and more.

Although, some market experts believe that if Huawei does spin off its consumer business, it will affect its layout in fields such as health, display, and Metaverse as well as the development of its HarmonyOS and Euler platforms. The CEO of Huawei‘s Consumer Business BG, Yu Chengdong, has stated in an interesting fact about the company’s current situation in this time of crisis. The senior executive has stated that Huawei’s consumer business is expected to grow by over 20 percent in 2020, especially in China.

The statement was made in an interview with a Chinese news reporting agency. Yu Chengdong is confident about the growth of Huawei’s smartphone sales in the Chinese market, although the same cannot be said for the global market. The senior official believes that the numbers won’t be as high as 20 percent, due to the lack of GMS (Google Mobile Services).

For those unaware, after the US Commerce Department blacklisted Huawei back in 2019, the company was banned from trading or partnering with US based companies. This led to Huawei smartphones shipping without Google’s services. The move was a clear strategy by the US to pressure the company and by its extension, China.

However, in response to this, Huawei made its very own mobile services ecosystem, which Yu Chengdong said “is now very good and selling well. The P40 series are all equipped with HMS and are already being shipped. Due to the epidemic, some stores can’t open, but the second half will be better.” However, its viability outside of China is still under scrutiny.

In another attempt to hamper Huawei’s operations, the US is trying to limit the company’s chip making process through TSMC. The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is the primary supplier of the company’s HiSilicon Kirin chipsets. So this could potentially deal a devastating blow to the Chinese tech giant.

Huawei Consumer Business Group made public its expected annual performance figures for 2016. Sales revenue of 178 billion RMB was predicted, 42% up from that of 2015 and was able to ship 139 million units, an increase of 29% from the previous year.

The company has plans of surpassing that figure this year. According to Huawei CGB CEO, Richard Yu, ”In 2017, we (Huawei) will strengthen our supply chain, channels, R&D, services and any other areas required to streamline our operations, improve the efficiency of our decision-making and implementation, drive our internationalization strategy and proactively develop future capacity.”

Huawei achieved a number of breakthroughs in 2016. It’s customized version of android, EMUI is now more refined and deeply integrated with the company’s Kirin processors. Their phones also have better camera performance, thanks in part to their collaboration with Leica on the Huawei P9 and the Huawei Mate 9 models. Both companies have founded a joint research lab called Max Berek Innovation Lab that will focus on development and innovation in areas relating to optical systems, imaging algorithms, and virtual and augmented realities.

Their focus on artificial intelligence has also paid off as the Huawei Mate 9 will be the first phone to ship with Amazon’s AI assistant, Alexa pre-loaded.

The Huawei P9 and Mate 9 are the manufacturer’s only phones to have surpassed 10 million sales even after  the latter suffered supply shortages due to the high demand. Their Honor sub-brand is not doing badly at all. The top of the line right now is the Honor Magic released towards the end of last year, and the dual-camera Honor 6X has received its US launch hoping to surpass the Honor 5X. The Honor 8 has also gotten positive reviews all over, standing as one of the major contenders to the OnePlus 3.

In its bid to become recognized as a global brand, the company signed up top footballer, Lionel Messi as brand ambassador; and Hollywood stars, Henry Cavill and Scarlett Johansson as spokespeople for the Huawei P9.

Huawei is currently ranked as the 5oth most valuable brand by BrandZ and is 72 on the Top 100 global brands by Interbrand.
