A New Step in Huawei’s Auto Journey

Huawei and Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) are set to launch the refreshed Stelato S9 in November 2025. The luxury sedan, positioned as a flagship under Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA), showcases how the tech giant is embedding its smart systems deeper into the automotive industry. This will be the first major update since the S9 debuted in August 2024.

Although the car carries Huawei’s design and technology, it isn’t built by Huawei itself. Instead, it represents the company’s growing collaborations with major automakers to bring its hardware, software, and smart driving technologies to the road.

Elegant Design and Refined Details

The 2026 Stelato S9 retains its large, flowing sedan design but adds new premium styling touches. The front continues with Huawei’s signature “Universe Headlight” layout, now upgraded to the “Brilliant Star River” design. A new “Universe Star” emblem and a “Nebula Through-type” taillight bar give it a more futuristic look.

With a length of 5.16 meters and a wheelbase of 3.05 meters, the sedan promises spacious interiors, particularly focusing on rear-seat comfort and luxury. Customization options include unique trims, alloy wheels, and electronic side mirrors.

Intelligent Driving and Power Options

One of the biggest upgrades is the introduction of Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 4 autonomous driving system. The setup includes 4 LiDARs, 4D radar, and 36 sensors for 360° environmental awareness. This technology enables advanced driver-assistance and semi-autonomous driving features.

Buyers can choose between two versions: a pure electric (EV) model built on an 800V platform with a range of over 800 km, or an extended-range electric (EREV) model that offers up to 1,300 km using a gasoline-powered generator. Prices start at RMB 309,800 (≈ USD 43,500).

Strengthening China’s EV Ecosystem

The Stelato S9 isn’t Huawei’s first car, but it is the first vehicle co-developed with BAIC, expanding Huawei’s automotive footprint beyond its existing Aito, Luxeed, and Maextro brands. This collaboration reflects Huawei’s goal of merging AI, smart sensors, and EV technology into mainstream cars, strengthening China’s position in the global electric vehicle market.

For consumers, this means smarter, more connected cars at competitive prices, while for the industry, it signals a new phase where tech firms rival traditional automakers in innovation and intelligence.

Huawei’s Managing Director and CEO of Consumer BG, Yu Chengdong, has revealed that the company’s high-end smart cars, priced below RMB 300,000, are being sold at a loss. This financial strain is attributed to the substantial investment in research and development, particularly in smart driving technology.

To showcase their latest advancements in this field, Huawei previewed the upcoming release of the Wenjie M5. The presentation highlighted several key features aimed at enhancing the driving experience for consumers.

source: Wikipedia

The Wenjie M5 boasts a fashionable appearance, promising to appeal to style-conscious drivers. Moreover, it promises an enhanced driving experience with smarter travel features and comprehensive safety measures.

Central to the vehicle’s capabilities is Huawei’s ADS 2.0 high-end smart driving system, which has undergone significant upgrades. Among its new functionalities is the Smart Driving Pilot NCA, which offers intelligent driving assistance across various road types.

One notable improvement is making the system adaptable to all urban roads, highways, and rural routes nationwide and not relying on super-accurate maps. This is made possible through the integration of the GOD (General Obstacle Detection) network and RCR (Road Cognition & Reasoning) network 2.0 technology, achieving a remarkable 99% recognition rate of obstacle types. Furthermore, the system independently comprehends complex road conditions, contributing to better driving performance overall.

Huaweis CEO of Consumer BG, Richard Yu Chengdong announced on Weibo that they’ve started delivering the long-awaited Luxeed S7 electric sedan. This is a big deal because it’s the first time Chinese state-owned Chery Automobile and Huawei are working together on such a project. Despite earlier production challenges attributed to semiconductor shortages and manufacturing issues, the Luxeed S7 has finally begun reaching customers.

The Luxeed S7 generated a lot of excitement in the market and garnered impressive pre-orders totaling 20,000 by November 28, 2023, positioning itself as a competitor to Tesla’s Model S in the premium EV segment. However, the standout feature is its affordability, with a starting price of approximately 249,800 yuan (equivalent to US$34,600), making it notably cheaper than the Tesla Model S.

There were initial setbacks caused by shortages of semiconductors and worries regarding a crucial computing component provided by Huawei. Nevertheless, these challenges were addressed, allowing deliveries to begin. Richard Yu said that a considerable number of vehicles are already on their way to customers. This achievement in deliveries marks a pivotal moment for both Chery and Huawei in the electric vehicle domain, potentially shaping the direction of their future partnership.

Analysts anticipate the Luxeed S7 to compete with other premium pure EVs in China, leveraging digital technologies such as autonomous driving and voice-activated controls. The partnership between Chery and Huawei, combining technological expertise with manufacturing capabilities, holds promising prospects in the rapidly growing Chinese EV market.

Luxeed S7 Electric Sedan

The Luxeed S7, the first sedan from Luxeed, a collaboration between Huawei and Chery, offers four variants, including Pro, Max, Max+, and Max RS. Built on Huawei’s advanced 800 V-based Giant Whale high-voltage platform, it promises exceptional performance and efficiency.

Equipped with cutting-edge technology like Huawei ADS 2.0 ADAS software, it offers a CLTC range of up to 855 km for certain versions, along with rapid charging capabilities. Customers can choose between single-motor and dual-motor versions, with the latter boasting a maximum power of 215 kW and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds. Advanced features such as roof-mounted LiDAR for enhanced assisted driving functions further enhance its appeal, making the Luxeed S7 a compelling choice in the electric vehicle market.

Analysts say that Luxeed S7 will offer advanced digital technologies, making it a strong contender in the growing EV market. The partnership between Chery and Huawei is seen as promising, leveraging Huawei’s technological expertise in areas like computing systems, radar, and autonomous driving platforms with Chery’s manufacturing capabilities.

As the Luxeed S7 hits the roads and customer reviews emerge, its features and performance will be closely scrutinized. Its success or failure could have significant implications for both Chery and Huawei in the competitive EV landscape.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group (BG), introduced the Luxeed S7 (ZhiJie S7) electric sedan, signaling Huawei’s entry into the automotive sector. The event not only unveiled this groundbreaking vehicle but also hinted at a prospective partnership with FAW Group, a key manufacturing ally of Volkswagen and Toyota, potentially becoming the newest addition to Huawei’s burgeoning car alliance. This development sets the groundwork for Huawei’s dynamic venture into the electric vehicle (EV) market.

Strategic Collaboration and Cooperation Models

Huawei’s partnership with notable car manufacturers has taken the form of standardized parts supply models, the “Huawei Inside” (HI) model, and the Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA). HIMA, representing the deepest level of cooperation, involves select vehicle partners as investment cooperation targets. Notably, current HIMA products include the “WenJie” (AITO) SUV co-developed with Seres and the “ZhiJie” (Luxeed) electric sedan co-developed with Chery. Future models, including two additional “Jie” from BAIC (“XiangJie”) and JAC (“AoJie”), underscore Huawei’s commitment to innovation and collaboration in the electric vehicle space.

Market Impact and Recent Partnerships

The Luxeed S7 launch event sparked a late-session rally in the automobile manufacturing sector. Chinese automobile manufacturing companies like FAW and FAWAY hit their maximum daily price increase, and BAIC BluePark came close to reaching its daily limit. JAC Motors and Seres followed an upward trend, reflecting the positive market reception of Huawei’s endeavors in the automotive industry.

A recent memorandum of investment cooperation signed between Changan Automobile and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. on November 25th further solidified Huawei’s presence in the electric vehicle sector. The agreement outlined plans to establish a joint company focusing on research, design, production, sales, and service of intelligent automotive systems and component solutions, with Changan Automobile intending to invest strategically in the venture.

Luxeed S7 Pricing and Features

The Luxeed S7, co-developed with Chery, is competitively priced at RMB 249,800 ($35000), positioning itself as a strong contender against Tesla’s Model S and Porsche’s Taycan 4S. Huawei’s pricing strategy, with the Luxeed S7 priced lower than the earlier revealed pre-sale starting price of RMB 258,000, reflects a commitment to market competitiveness.

The vehicle boasts Huawei’s advanced technologies, featuring partially autonomous driving software, a proprietary operating system for infotainment, and Tuling: a high-tech chassis with adaptive air suspension and torque vectoring for enhanced handling and comfort.

Market Position and Monthly Deliveries

Huawei’s growing presence in the electric vehicle market is evident in its increasing monthly delivery targets. Record monthly deliveries of Aito-branded electric vehicles are expected to range between 16,000 and 18,000 in the current month, with projections to surpass 23,000 in December and further increase to over 30,000 in January. These ambitious targets underscore Huawei’s commitment to making a substantial impact in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape.

Huawei’s Luxeed S7 launch, coupled with strategic collaborations and partnerships, marks a significant stride into the electric vehicle market. With cutting-edge technologies, competitive pricing, and a commitment to collaboration, Huawei is poised to leave a lasting impression on the automotive industry.

Many of us know Huawei for its smartphones and excellent laptops like MateBook X Pro 2023, the company continues to expand its product lineup. Even though Huawei is involved in many different industries, their most noticeable investment is in the automobile industry. Not long ago, we talked about the company’s electric sports sedan called Luxeed. Now, there are leaked spy photos of this vehicle. Here are the details…

Huawei Luxeed to Feature HarmonyOS 4 and Lidar

As mentioned above, Huawei is continuing its work in the car industry. Their work focuses mainly on HarmonyOS 4. Many car makers are either using or planning to use this new operating system introduced by the company. But that’s not all Huawei plans for the electric vehicle market. It’s known that they have been working on making their own electric vehicle for some time.

Recently, Huawei’s Executive Director and CEO of Smart Car Solutions, Yu Chengdong, officially announced that the first purely electric sedan under Huawei umbrella is set to meet the public this quarter. Now, bloggers discovered spy shots of this vehicle. The Huawei Luxeed has large headlights and taillights that look similar. The taillights are smaller than the headlights, but they still stand out. This gives the car a unique look.

You can take a look at the pictures below and form your own opinion about the vehicle. While this striking design is largely thanks to Huawei, they didn’t work on it alone. The eagerly awaited electric car is a joint effort between Huawei and Chery. Sadly, we don’t know all the details, but according to official announcements, this car will be the first to have the HarmonyOS 4.

The new HarmonyOS 4 makes the car’s screen system better. You can easily connect different devices in the car. By just dragging, you can show what’s on the front screen to the back screen, so everyone in the car can see the same thing. The OS now works with more apps, making it even better. Plus, you can connect it to drone apps and watch videos from the sky on the vehicle screen.

When we look closely at the photos, we see a lidar on the top. It is believed to have Huawei’s ADS 2.0 smart driving system. Self-driving technology is very popular today. That’s why companies like Tesla and Xpeng are using their self-driving features as a marketing strategy. Huawei is expected to do something similar. Unfortunately, that’s all we know about Huawei Luxeed, but stay tuned for more.

Telecom giant Huawei has signed a new agreement with SERES automobile to launch its first flagship Smart Car. Though both companies have previously worked together to build the AITO series, the new agreement highlights a long-term collaboration, to make flagship Smart EVs.

According to Huawei Smart Car Business Unit CEO, Yu Chengdong, the partnership with SERES marks a new beginning as it is the first car company to cooperate with Huawei with the deepest investment and most productive models. He further added that the two companies have formed a good foundation for cross-border cooperation in the past, have sufficient mutual trust, and will continue to cooperate for a long time in the future.

source: Huawei

Huawei and SERES are planning to launch their flagship model with a smart driving system, sometime later this year. According to the new agreement the smart EVs will be launched under a fresh platform. Under this partnership, SERES will provide industrial resources and gather new technologies and processes. Huawei on the other hand will provide the software ecosystem, with a smart and innovative user interface, advanced smart driving technology, and a cockpit powered by the latest Harmony OS.

Both companies have set ambitious goals for this partnership. They plan to sell more than one million EVs by 2026 and are building a joint innovation center to develop and promote advanced automotive technology.

Huawei – SERES Previous Partnership:

Huawei and SERES came together in 2021 to sell smart EVs. Huawei provides the automaker ICT smart car solutions, high-end brand operation, marketing experience, and a sales network that it has accumulated over the years in the consumer electronics business. The partnership established its first brand AITO (Adding intelligence to Auto) and launched its first all-electric cross-over SUV the AITO M5 in December 2021. Thereafter it launched the AITO M7 and M5 EV models respectively.

Apart from SERES, Huawei has also co-operated with other automobile brands like Changan, and BAIC to sell EVs in China. It is currently working on partnerships with JAC Motors and Chery Automobile CO. Ltd.

Huawei recently unveiled its plan to target high-end Electric Vehicle (EV) customers. Though the company has no plans to make its own EVs, it has partnered with already established domestic automakers to penetrate the EV market.

When asked about its EV plans, the CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu said that the company planned to sell more than a million EVs powered by Huawei’s Ecosystem, in 2025. The base variant of EVs using the Huawei software would cost no less than $29020 (RMB 200,000). Essentially Huawei plans to partner with automakers who compete with market leaders like BYD and Tesla which sell EVs at an average price of $33000.

Huawei’s EV Partnership

Huawei which entered the EV market in 2021 partnered with companies like Seres, Changan, and BAIC to sell EVs in China. It is also working on partnerships with JAC Motors and Chery Automobile CO. Ltd, a state-owned automaker known for its partnership with Jaguar Land Rover.

Huawei, which was one of the top tech companies, was crushed under the heavy sanctions levied by the US over the past few years. Once the company entered the infamous US Entity Trade list, it was boycotted by all US firms and suffered a huge loss in its business.

In 2021, Huawei’s revenue shrank 28.6% to 636.8 billion yuan ($93.7 billion), as it could not bypass the US-led sanctions and trade bans over the past three years. In fact, this revenue loss is also one of the major reasons for the company to step into the lucrative EV industry. As China is the biggest EV market in the world, Huawei also wants a share of the pie. Hence it partnered with local automakers to dive into the EV market.

Huawei’s EV Journey

Huawei announced its plan to enter the EV industry in 2021 and unveiled the first Huawei-powered Electric SUV the Aito M5 in September 2022. The telecommunication giant partnered with Chinese automaker Seres to supply technology for the sports utility vehicle, which was an instant hit in China. Within 4 months of its launch, Aito M5 outsold big EV brands like Nio and Volkswagen and, in fact, gave stiff competition to Tesla’s popular EV the Model Y.

However, the unexpected sales in the initial period were actually fueled by patriotism rather than consumer demand. The Chinese people were already angry with Washington’s take on their country, and the added sanction on companies like ZTE and Huawei awakened their patriotic instincts. At the time of the launch of Aito M5, Chinese President Xi Jinping asked his citizens to refocus on the nation’s economy by buying locally. This led to a frenzy of nationalism and aided the sales of Huawei technology-powered Aito M5.

However once the nationalist sentiments cooled down Aito M5 sales, started facing pressure from factors like the global economic downturn, COVID-19 policies, weak domestic market, and cutthroat competition which affected all the EV makers in China. In 2022, the company saw below-target sales for Aito as it delivered just 76,180 cars.

China’s automobile industry in general has suffered due to its Zero-Covid policy which resulted in reduced demand, supply shortage, and a standstill in production. Now, the EV makers in China are trying to revive their sales by lowering prices and offering better features. Industry leader Tesla has already cut down the price of Model 3 and Y by almost 13%. Recently, Seres also slashed its price for Aito M5 to retain its market. Amidst this tough competition, Huawei plans to enter the EV market by targeting high-end consumers who can pay the price for its technology.

In response to this, the Chinese tech giant’s executive stated that it is very likely since he believes that the three cornerstones to its success in the mobile industry are experience, quality, and brand.

The company already has experience within the automobile industry over its long years of partnership with carmakers. Apart from this, it will also ensure quality under its brand image. Yu Chengdong further added that Huawei’s aim is to be the first smartphone brand to be fully invested in the automobile market. The company has a notable goal since nobody remembers the one that comes second, as per the executive.

For those unaware, Huawei has been working on diversifying its business operations after its mobile unit saw a decline due to sanctions by the US government. One of the new key areas of focus was automobiles. The company has already patented a number of technology related to the next generation of self driving technology and other related systems. So, it is clear that the brand has major plans for the future within the automobile segment.

Called the AITO M5, the EV was seen as a bold business strategy for Huawei to expand its expertise into the automobile industry.

With decent sales of shipment figures for the AITO M5 EV, it seems that it is in Huawei’s best interest to keep developing electric vehicles in the market. Apparently, Huawei thinks so as well, as a recent listing on China’s MIIT Database(via IT Home), shows that Huawei has already planned ahead for its next generation of electric vehicles as recently got certified to proceed with the operation.

The listing does not show off the name of the product, but if examined closely, one of the photos contains a blurry wording that seems to resemble “AITO M7” signifying that this listing is the next Huawei electric vehicle to be launched under the AITO sub-brand.

From the listing, the Huawei AITO M7 EV is detailed to be a mid-large sized 6-seater hybrid electric SUV, slightly larger than its AITO M5 predecessor. Judging from the outside looks, the AITO M7 adopts a similar design as its older sibling, the AITO M5. It features the same enormous air ventilation grill at the frontal bumper, a sleek and straight roofline, aerodynamic translucent headlights, chrome coloured trims across the body, etc.

The EV is also listed to come in five-spoke and ten-spoke wheel options, with optional upgrades such as chrome greyish translucent tinted windows, or ink-black translucent tinted windows. One minor design change of the AITO M7 though is that it seems to lack the “Huawei Zhixuan” logo on the EV present on the AITO M5. However, the pictures uploaded to the listing did not show off pictures of the automobile from all angles, but there may be a possibility that Huawei had just decided to relocate the logo elsewhere on the car.

In terms of dimensions, the Huawei AITO M7 weighs in at 2340kg, and has a length, width and height of 5020×1945×1775mm.

For the engine powering the AITO M7, the electric hybrid automobile will be utilising a 1.5T range extender + motor combo. The rated power/peak power of the electric drive motor is listed to be 72kW/200kW, the maximum net engine power is listed to be 90kW, and the fuel consumption given by China’s MIIT is 1.05L/100km.

Since the AITO M5 only started delivering in March of 2022, it is expected that the AITO M7 will be announced later in the year so as to not cannibalise sales of the AITO M5.

The news comes from Huawei Senior Executive, Wang Chao, who was a panellist at the National Chinese Electric Vehicle 100 Forum. And starting March 5th, Huawei has started delivering the EV to their new owners after holding a launch ceremony on the same day.

Dozens of units of the AITO M5 were spotted parked on the site and an image officially shared by AITO’s Weibo (via IT Home) shows them lined up in front of what appears to be the production line or perhaps one of the company’s showrooms.

The retail pricing of the AITO M5 in China after applying subsidies has been given below:

The standard version of the rear-wheel-drive starts from 249,800 Yuan (around $39,535)

The four-wheel-drive performance version starts from 279,800 Yuan (around $44,284)

The four-wheel-drive flagship version costs 319,800 Yuan (around $50,614)

The AITO M5 has been developed jointly by Huawei and Seres. The latter is an electric vehicle and component manufacturer headquartered in California. The car’s electric drive system and smart cockpit are all provided by Huawei and the company also made major contributions to its “industrial design.”

An incredible range of 1,000km on a single full charge is promised but the car also uses a 1.5T four-cylinder “range extender” engine. On the software end, you get a smart cockpit, HarmonyOS vehicle system, and DriveOne three-electric system provided by Huawei.

The Huawei AITO M5 looks to be a China-exclusive with no global launch plans as of now but it wouldn’t be unsafe to assume that the company may be planning on expanding to global markets soon too.

Last month, Huawei Auto COO Wang Jun expressed that he believes true driverless cars will arrive in the next five to ten years and “change the current state of cars” forever.

And a month before that, in December 2021, Huawei debuted its HarmonyOS-powered AITO M5 EV in China to take on the Tesla Model Y.

Wang said that Huawei originally specialized in the telecommunications field and its 30+ years of experience with ICT technology will help it benefit greatly as it forays into the smart car industry.

He also emphasized that Huawei aims is to help other companies build good cars, because of which it has partnered with BAIC, Changan, and GAC, all of which are major players in the EV market in China.

Huawei AITO M5

When the true potential of software-driven cars is achieved, Wang believes that true driverless cars will arrive and “change the current state of cars” forever.

This, in his view, will be realized within the next five to ten years and will eventually lead to a paradigm shift in car design. Cockpits have always favored the driver but after the realization of unmanned driving, the cockpit will be designed around the passenger (via IT Home).

Accordingly, in addition to investing heavily in intelligent driving technologies, Huawei is also investing in intelligent cockpits. The HarmonyOS ecosystem will be playing a major role in this, making it much easier for new companies to adopt smart technologies and communications to build smarter cockpits.

A good example of this already exists in the form of the recently launched Huawei AITO M5, developed jointly by Huawei and SERES. The vehicle offers a 10.4-inch curved LCD instrument cluster and a “semi-floating” 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The latter runs on HarmonyOS and supports 3D face recognition.

But last month, a report did emerge that the company was planning to make a full entry into the electric vehicles market. The move is said to be part of efforts to cushion the effect of the US ban which has resulted in the near-collapse of Huawei’s smartphone business.

The report may have some truth it after all. A couple of patents relating to EVs have been spotted. Specifically, two patents filed by Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. titled “An Electric Drive System, Powertrain, and Electric Vehicle”. The patents were both filed on October 21, 2021, and have the application numbers CN112436747A and CN112436779A.

The patent description published with the model bearing the application number CN112436747A shows that this application provides an electric drive system, a powertrain, and an electric vehicle, which involves the technical field of electronic circuits. Among them, the electric drive system includes a bus, an on-board charger, a three-level inverter circuit, and a controller.

The second patent with application number CN112436779A is also for an electric drive system, a powertrain, and an electric vehicle, which involves the field of power electronics technology. The electric drive system is connected to the power battery pack and includes a bus bar, a three-level inverter circuit, a DC-DC conversion circuit, and a controller. The controller is used to control the first conversion circuit and the second conversion circuit. The electric drive system reduces the volume and cost.

These are technical terms that may not make much sense to someone not familiar with EV systems but the bottom line is that Huawei may likely be working on its own EV. Do bear in mind, though, that the EV may not arrive any time soon.
